The arts: general topics Books
Springer Verlag, Singapore Cultural Sustainability and Arts Education:
Book SynopsisThis book is based on the topics, questions and results of the international conference "Aesthetics of Transformation - Arts Education Research and the Challenge of Cultural Sustainability". It aims to foster and sharpen the understanding of the potential role of arts education and arts education research for cultural sustainability. In an ever more complex and interconnected world, culture is a valuable resource for sustainable development. Based on the thesis that the change towards sustainability has to be a change that starts with cultural practices of perception and knowledge, this book makes an important contribution to the broad discourse on cultural sustainability, which has begun to emerge in recent years. In this context, the volume first deals with Intangible Cultural Heritage and how aesthetic practices and certain forms of art are changing through cultural transformation processes. Subsequently, it focuses on issues such as arts and cultural education in times of neoliberalism, (post-)migration and post-coloniality as well as on arts and cultural education under conditions of digital transformation. These theoretical and empirical contributions are complemented by insights into field trips to institutions and exemplary places of practice, showing different representations of educational art practices, cultural heritage, and cultural sustainability. Against this background the book finally offers responses and commentaries that can form the starting point for a far reaching interactive dialogical process on the utmost importance of cultural, aesthetic and arts education as part of a global endeavor for sustainable development.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Intangible Cultural Heritage: A challenge to aesthetic and cultural education.- Part I Research.- Arts and Digital Technology: Exploring responses in times of change.- Making Creative and Entrepreneurial Selves in Education: The governing of life in contemporary times.- Storying [post]qualitative inquiries, methods and pedagogies in/for/as arts based educational research.- Critical Incidents as a Participatory Research Approach for Transformative Cultural Practices.- Transcultural Aesthetic Practices in the Classroom: Sounds, spaces, bodies.- Transformation of traditional arts forms in the evolving contexts: Cantonese opera in Hong Kong as an example.- The transformation of the popular song as a tool for arts education and sustainability.- Part II Practices.- Arts and cultural practices for social transformation towards a sustainable peace building.- Culture and sustainability in situations of conflict: Artistic practices in West Africa.- Let's chat.- Arts education and decolonization: Challenges and opportunities for cultural sustainability in the context of migration.- The transformation of museum exhibitions in the era of digital objects.- Museum and arts education: Interchange as practice in digital spaces.- Post-internet-art.- Part III Questions and Challenges.- Aesthetics of transformation: Questions to ask, Ideas to contemplate.- The Seoul agenda: A commentary.- Aesthetics, culture and transformation: An arts education perspective.- The autonomy of arts education: Perspectives of the council of cultural education.- Whose voices, bodies, objects and artefacts are we teaching, sustaining, learning of, asking students to practice in?.- The influence of neoliberalism on arts education.- Part IV Exploring transformations: Field trips.- Cultural education between processes of tradition and transformation: A theoretical introduction to the field-trip section.- From institution to subculture and back: A field trop to Komm/K4/Kunstlerhaus Nuremberg.- Commemorative culture in the age of globalization and (post-)migration?!.- Museum education in times of flight and (post)migration.- Field trip to the ;Villa Leon' and the children's museum.

Seagull Books London Ltd Without Model – Parva Aesthetica
Book SynopsisEssays by Adorno on art and cinema, available in English for the first time. In Without Model, Theodor W. Adorno strikingly demonstrates the intellectual range for which he is known. Taking the premise of the title as his guiding principle, that artistic and philosophical thought must eschew preconceptions and instead adapt itself to its time, circumstances, and object, Adorno presents a series of essays reflecting on culture at different levels, from the details of individual products to the social conditions of their production. He shows his more nostalgic side in the childhood reminiscences of ‘Amorbach’, but also his acute sociocultural analysis on the central topic of the culture industry. He criticizes attempts to maintain tradition in music and visual art, arguing against a restorative approach by stressing the modernity and individuality of historical works in the context of their time. In all of these essays, available for the first time in English, Adorno displays the remarkable thinking of one both steeped in tradition and dedicated to seeing beyond it. Table of Contents1. MIT Press Agnes Martin Night Sea Afterall Afterall Books
Book SynopsisA close examination of Agnes Martin's grid painting in luminous blue and gold.Agnes Martin's Night Sea (1963) is a large canvas of hand-drawn rectangular grids painted in luminous blue and gold. In this illustrated study, Suzanne Hudson presents the painting as the work of an artist who was also a thinker, poet, and writer for whom self-presentation was a necessary part of making her works public. With Night Sea, Hudson argues, Martin (1912-2004) created a shimmering realization of control and loss that stands alone within her suite of classic grid paintings as an exemplary and exceptional achievement.Hudson offers a close examination of Night Sea and its position within Martin's long and prolific career, during which the artist destroyed many works as she sought forms of perfection within self-imposed restrictions of color and line. For Hudson, Night Sea stands as the last of Martin's process-based works before she turned from oil to acryli

Tate Publishing Dangerous Moves: Performance and Politics in Cuba
Book SynopsisExamining performance and politics in post-revolutionary Cuba, "Dangerous Moves" challenges the understanding of performance art and political engagement through a sustained analysis of the contemporary experience in Cuba. Coco Fusco analyzes the ways that the Cuban state has wielded influence over artists in recent times, arguing that in a context in which overt political speech is subject to censorship, the language of performance emerges as the favored means of social commentary. Focusing on a range of performative practices in visual art, music, poetry, and political activism, Fusco examines the relationship between the abject body in performance and the greater body politic of a state officially defined as revolutionary yet seeking to limit and constrain dissent. "Dangerous Moves" is a key addition to the canon of writing on contemporary performance art.

Krannert Art Museum,US Blind Field
Book SynopsisBrazil has long been called the "country of the future." This book documents an exhibition that examines Brazil from the perspective of blindness as a critical category, a metaphor for the way in which the obstruction of perception can illuminate alternate modes of knowledge and experience. It features twenty emerging and mid-career artists working in Brazil who offer a critical perspective on processes of transition within contemporary society, be it from the public space of the street to the virtual zone of the computer screen, or the scale of local communities to the structure of large-scale political action. These works speak to the complexity and heterogeneity of an art milieu that is both tied to the local and manifestly global in reach.

Archipelago Books In the Land of the Cyclops
Book SynopsisKnausgaard’s struggle is still ongoing with In the Land of the Cyclops as he continues to navigate the fjord of truth between reality and experience“This, which we perhaps could call inexhaustible precision, is the goal of all art, and its essential legitimacy.” —Jessica Ferri, The Los Angeles TimesIn his first essay collection to be published in English, the New York Times bestselling author of the My Struggle series Karl Ove Knausgaard explores art, philosophy, and literature with piercing candor and remarkable erudition. Paired with full color-images, his essays render the shadowlands of Cindy Sherman’s photography, illuminate the depth of Stephen Gill’s eye, and tussle with the inner mechanics of Ingmar Bergman’s workbooks. In one essay he describes the figure of Francesca Woodman, arms coiled in birch bark and reaching up toward the sky—a tree. In another, he unearths Sally Mann’s photographs of decomposing corpses, so much so that branches and limbs, hair and grass, begin to harmonize. Each essay bristles with Knausgaard’s searing honesty and longing to authentically see, understand, and experience the world.

Apollo Publishers The da Vinci Legacy: How an Elusive 16th-Century
Book SynopsisFor the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death comes an immersive journey through five centuries of history to define the Leonardo mystique and uncover how the elusive Renaissance artist became a global pop icon.Virtually everyone would agree that Leonardo da Vinci was the most important artist of the High Renaissance. It was Leonardo who singlehandedly created the defining features of Western art: a realism based on subtle shading; depth using atmospheric effects; and dramatic contrasts between light and dark. But how did Leonardo, a painter of very few works who died in obscurity in France, become the internationally renowned icon he is today, with the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper the most visited artworks in the world, attracting nearly a billion visitors each year, and Salvator Mundi selling as the most expensive artwork of all time, for nearly half a billion dollars? This extraordinary volume, lavishly illustrated with 130 color images, is the first book to unravel these mysteries by diving deep into the art, literature, science, and politics of Europe from the Renaissance through today. It gives illuminating context to both Leonardo and his accomplishments; explores why Leonardo’s fame vastly overshadowed that of his contemporaries and disciples; and ultimately reveals why despite finishing very few works, his celebrity has survived, even thrived, through five centuries of history.Table of ContentsIntroduction Leonardo in Amboise The Legacy of Leonardo’s Studio The Leonardeschi after Leonardo Leonardo and the Artists of the High Renaissance Leonardo in the Literature of the 16th Century The Leonardo Legend and the Art of Engraving The Mona Lisa and the Last Supper in the Baroque Era Leonardo’s Legacy in the 19th Century Leonardo da Vinci in the 20th century The Legacy of Leonardo Select Bibliography Endnotes Index
