Pentagon Press Terror Challenge in South Asia and Prospect of
Book SynopsisIn modern times, terrorism has emerged as a scourge and South Asia is the region where terrorist groups of almost all varieties have operated. However, countering the challenge from terrorism came on the international agenda only after the attacks of 9/11. This book is an attempt to study the problem of terrorism in South Asia, which has often been perceived at its hub. The contributors to the volume belonging to South Asian region have provided valuable insights on the issue of terrorism and have also suggested measures to deal with the problem. They consider terrorism as a phenomenon that has been harmful to society, economy and polity of the South Asian nations. At the same time they also point out that there should not be overemphasis on the use of force. In fact, a calibrated use of force is likely to be more effective. Ultimately, if terrorism is to be comprehensively defeated then ideologies and root causes that propel it further need to be tackled properly.

Pentagon Press After Abbottabad: Terror to Turmoil in Pakistan
Book SynopsisThe US strike at Abbottabad which resulted in the elimination of Osama bin Laden is a turning point in the war of terror that began post 9/11. It is also a pebble in the pond whose ripples were felt across nations. The relationship of Pakistan and the US were strained to a large extent thanks to the US keeping the Pakistan forces out of the loop about the strike at the compound in which Osama bin Laden was killed. Since that incident Pakistan has seen internal turmoil and tried hard to come to grips with it. The Pakistan Army and ISI were literally caught with their pants down. The failed intelligence has stripped them of their supposed invincibility. The politicians in Pakistan are daring to make deals with the US without the blessing of the Pakistan Army. The balance of power in the nation is shifting and new players are emerging in the game. Pakistan is not the only nation which is adversely affected. Afghanistan is also worried about just how the 2014 withdrawal of NATO troops is likely to affect its very sovereignty with the Taliban, a fast ally of the Al Qaeda, resumes terror attacks as part of its ''Spring Offensive.'' The repeated bomb blasts around Kabul is a sign that the Taliban is very much around and waiting for its chance to over throw the present government. India lives with the uncertainty of volatile neighbours. It may be the largest nation, but it is not clearly the most powerful. Dealing with an unreasonable enemy whose sole rallying point is maintaining India as a common enemy for its various factions ensures that India will not be breathing easy even after Abbottabad.

Pentagon Press Terrorism in Indian Ocean Region
Book SynopsisThe Indian Ocean is the world`s third-largest body of water through which cross the vital sea lanes that help feed some of Asia`s largest economies. Nearly 80 per cent of the world`s seaborne trade in oil passes through the choke-points in these sea lanes of which 40 percent passes through the Strait of Hormuz, 35 per cent through the Strait of Malacca, and 8 per cent through the Bab el-Mandab Strait. This makes the Indian Ocean of vital importance. The Indian Ocean Rim has 26 littoral states and is home to 2.3 billion people. These states as well as their immediate hinterland vary in terms of geography, population, culture, political structures and economic development. But all of them are impacted by the phenomenon of terrorism and of growing incidents of piracy in and around the Horn of Africa. Today, it is in the Indian Ocean Region that a large majority of armed conflicts are currently taking place. This book is a compendium of the proceedings of the third Counter Terrorism Conference organised by India Foundation and the Government of Haryana (CTC 2017) with focus on terrorism in the Indian Ocean Region. As in the earlier two conferences organised by India Foundation, CTC 2017 brought together a galaxy of political and thought leaders from India and across the world to highlight various aspects of the subject. The book highlights how countries across the region are handling counter terrorism. The approaches may differ, but they aim to achieve the same result. Most importantly, what comes out clearly is the fact that terrorism can no longer be viewed as a problem of any one affected country; because of its global ramifications, it has to be fought as a joint regional and global effort. The radicalisation of sections of the population, the steps needed to counter its spread and also de-radicalise those affected populations have been emphasised in this volume. Fighting the scourge of terrorism would perforce have to be a united effort encompassing many fronts. States that use terrorism as an instrument of state policy would need to be addressed to eliminate it.

Pentagon Press Combating Terrorism: Evolving Asian Perspectives
Book SynopsisThis anthology of essays traverses a wide range of issues exploring the inconsistencies in the global war on terror, and brings together diverse perspectives from eminent practitioners, academics, technologists and civil society from Asia. It takes the conversation beyond the academic realm by delving into first person accounts from authors who are living and fighting terrorism in the heart of conflict zones in the region. The book navigates the conceptual challenges encountered during norm building efforts to counter terrorism, identifies ideologies and drivers fuelling this transnational resurgence of extremist violence, examines how technology is changing the nature of conflict and explores in depth the growing shadow of terrorism, steadily expanding from South West Asia, to the extended outposts in South Asia and South East Asia. Most importantly, it debates the absence of effective counter-narratives to counter terrorism and offers ideas to build upon a reservoir of best practices by countries in the region.

Book SynopsisTerrorism has become a virtually daily news item, and a tragic part of our lives. It is estimated that there are more than five hundred different terrorist groups world-wide. In this innovative and highly relevant book, the authors stress ways in which local agencies can mitigate and respond to the effects of the worst acts of terror faced by urban authorities. The authors combine theory and practice, citing incidents around the world (including the devastating attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C.), while emphasising Israel''s special experience in this field. In light of the increasing threat of terrorist acts and the rising interest in emergency management, this book provides solid background for governmental officials and emergency response personnel who are seeking to understand one of the most dangerous threats to modern life.

Book SynopsisRadical Islam is an enduring global challenge that presents a national and international security threat. Instigation by hate preachers, inadequate government, societal attention, religious and reciprocal radicalization have allowed this threat to manifest into terrorist violence. Extremist ideologies have infiltrated religious, educational, and digital spaces and thus, terrorism’s shadow continues to shroud the safety and stability of countries and communities worldwide today. On 21 April 2019, the world’s most dangerous threat movement, the Islamic State, mounted one of its deadliest attacks in Sri Lanka. The surge of fear, suspicion, and prejudice following what is now known as ‘Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday Massacre’ fragmented the country, imbuing hatred and anger against the Muslim community. Years later, the radicalization pipeline remains intact, and the threat persists. With the global expansion of the Islamic State and al-Qaeda, will the world witness attacks of a similar or greater scale in the future?Equal parts treatise and reference material, this book answers this question by tracing the genesis, threat trajectory, and aftermath of the bombings and the personalities behind them. With unprecedented access to accounts from Islamic State detainees, affected families, intelligence specialists, and investigators, the book reflects on lessons learned and provides insight into how such attacks are organized and what measures can be taken to prevent or respond to these threats effectively.

Book SynopsisThe devastating September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon left us stunned, angry, and uncomprehending. As it became clear that these horrifying acts had been committed in the name of Islam, we struggled to understand how religion could be used to justify the slaughter of innocents. The media, the government, and ordinary citizens alike sought answers to questions about Islam and its adherents. Who are the Muslim extremists who perpetrate such deeds? Why do they hate us? What do they hope to achieve? Does Islam really teach that such terrorists are holy warriors who will be rewarded with everlasting bliss? In this level-headed and authoritative book, John L. Esposito, one of the world''s most respected scholars of political Islam, provides answers to these and many other questions that have arisen in the wake of the attacks. Oxford University Press, USA Reliving Karbala
Book SynopsisIn 680 C.E., a small band of the Prophet Muhammads family and their followers, led by his grandson, Husain, rose up in a rebellion against the ruling caliph, Yazid. The family and its supporters, hopelessly outnumbered, were massacred at Karbala, in modern-day Iraq. The story of Karbala is the cornerstone of institutionalized devotion and mourning for millions of Shii Muslims. Apart from its appeal to the Shii community, invocations of Karbala have also come to govern mystical and reformist discourses in the larger Muslim world. Indeed, Karbala even serves as the archetypal resistance and devotional symbol for many non-Muslims. Until now, though, little scholarly attention has been given to the widespread and varied employment of the Karbala event. In Reliving Karbala, Syed Akbar Hyder examines the myriad ways that the Karbala symbol has provided inspiration in South Asia, home to the worlds largest Muslim population. Rather than a unified reading of Islam, Hyder reveals multiple, Trade ReviewReliving Karbala is a significant contribution to the existing scholarship on Karbala. Oxford University Press Conceptualizing Terrorism
Book SynopsisConceptualizing Terrorism argues that, in the post 9/11 world, the need for an internationally agreed definition of terrorism is more important than it has ever been, despite the challenges that such an endeavour presents. Indeed, in a global context, where the term is often applied selectively and pejoratively according to where one''s interests lie, there is a real need to instill some analytical quality into the concept of terrorism, not least in order to prevent the term being manipulated to justify all manner of counter-terrorism responses. Not only is this important for the policymaking context but it is also an imperative task within academia - in order to strengthen the theoretical foundation of terrorism studies, for all other terrorism related theories rest on what one means by terrorism in the first place. Written from an academic perspective, the book explores the prospects for terrorism as an analytical concept. Book SynopsisThe Muslim Brotherhood is the oldest and most important international Islamist group. Aside from strong organizations in Egypt, Jordan, Syria—where it provides the main opposition—and its Palestinian offshoot Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip, the Brotherhood has become active in Europe and North America.Trade Review"This is a wide-ranging, pithy, and painstakingly thorough collection, at once gripping and informative. It fills a critical lacuna in Middle East Studies and in the study of Islamist groups in particular, which, although already impressive in the breadth of their literature, remain mostly on the order of hagiographies and eloquent apologetics, more often than not justifying Islamism rather than mining its history and subjecting it to the honest critic s scalpel. Barry Rubin s collection has distinguished itself from the rest quite brilliantly here, supplementing the field with a refreshing dispassionate treatment of the Brotherhoods, and providing specialists, students and the general public with an alternative reading to common platitudes currently dominating the field.
