  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Why Buffy Matters: The Art of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHugely enjoyable, long awaited book by top world authority on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Buffy is still on screens and on DVD in home television libraries of a wide array of TV watchers and fans. This is also the student text for TV and cultural studies at colleges and universities where Buffy is widely taught. Rhonda Wilcox is a world authority on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", who has been writing and lecturing about the show since its arrival on our screens. This book is the distillation of this remarkable body of work and thought, a celebration of the series that she proposes is an aesthetic test case for television. Buffy is enduring as art, she argues, by exploring its own possibilities for long-term construction as well as producing individual episodes that are powerful in their own right. She examines therefore the larger patterns that extend through many episodes: the hero myth, the imagery of light, naming symbolism, Spike, sex and redemption, Buffy Summers compared and contrasted with Harry Potter. She then moves in to focus on individual episodes, such as the "Buffy musical Once More, with Feeling", the largely silent Hush and the dream episode "Restless" (T.S. Eliot comes to television). She also examines Buffy's ways of making meaning - from literary narrative and symbolism to visual imagery and sound. Combining great intelligence and wit, written for the wide Buffy readership, this is the worthy companion to the show that has claimed and kept the minds and hearts of watchers worldwide.Trade ReviewCRITICAL STUDIES IN TELEVISION 'Insightful and often illuminating to one's understanding of the series... a convincing argument' - Stacey Abbott

Book SynopsisKira Muratova is a respected and original contemporary film director, yet her earliest works were not welcomed when they were shown just after the end of Brezhnev's 'period of stagnation'. Only in 1987 in one of the first breaths of perestroika were these movies re-released, sending Muratova from talented pariah to celebrity almost overnight. Drawing from interviews with Muratova herself and her friends, unpublished scripts and interviews with audiences, Taubman traces the progress of Muratova's career, looking closely at each of her films including the 1990 masterpiece Asthenic Syndrome. She also surveys critical reaction to her films, both in Russia and the West.Trade Review'A timely celebration of the life and works of this most idiosyncratic figure... • John Blake Publishing Ltd Top Gear Story: The 100% Unofficial Story of the Most Famous Car Show...In the World

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom humble beginning as a 1970s motoring show, Top Gear has achieved world domination. Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series faced the axe in 2001 - but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irrevernt, funny and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments ove the Cool Wall and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig. Recent series have been defined by their madcap challenges - with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1000-mile journey across the Africa in cars bought for only GBP1500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole, have cemented Top Gear's reputation as much more than just a motoring show. But the show's most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300mph.

Book SynopsisEccentric, ironic and fantastic series like The Avengers and Danger Man, with their professional secret agents, or The Saint and The Persuaders, featuring flamboyant crime-fighters, still inspire mainstream and cult followings. Saints and Avengers explores and celebrates this television genre for the first time. Saints and Avengers uses case studies to look, for example, at the adventure series' representations of national identity and the world of the sixties and seventies. Chapman also proves his central thesis: that this particular type of thriller was a historically and culturally defined generic type, with enduring appeal, as the current vogue for remaking them as big budget films attests.Trade ReviewJournal of British Cinema and Television: "readable and pathbreaking book" "subtle and perspicacious" "deserves a wide readership" Journal of Contemporary History: "...an eloquent case for the significance of these programmes."

  • Brill Anime and Its Roots in Early Japanese Monster Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisJapanese anime plays a major role in modern popular visual culture and aesthetics, yet this is the first study which sets out to put today’s anime in historical context by tracking the visual links between Edo- and Meiji-period painters and the post-war period animation and manga series ‘Gegegeno Kitaro’ by Mizuki Shigeru. Through an investigation of the very popular Gegegeno Kitaro series, broadcast from the 1960s to the present time, the author is able to pinpoint the visual roots of the animation characters in the context of yôkai folklore and Edo- and Meiji- period monster painting traditions. Through analysing the changing images related to the representation of monsters in the series, the book documents the changes in the perception of monsters over the last half-century, while at the same time reflecting on the importance of Mizuki’s work in keeping Japan’s visual traditions alive and educating new audiences about folklore by recasting yôkai imagery in modern-day settings in an innovative way. In addition, by analysing and comparing character, set, costume and mask design, plot and storyline of yôkai-themed films, the book is also the first study to shed light on the roles the representations of yôkai have been assigned in post-war Japanese cinema. This book will be of particular interest to those studying Japanese visual media, including manga and animation, as well as students and academics in the fields of Japanese Studies, Animation Studies, Art History and Graphic Design.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; List of Figures; 1 Introduction; 2 Yôkai Art - From Prehistory to Modernity; 3 Enter the Limping Hero; 4 Art History Meets Gegegeno Kitaro; 5 Yôkai in Cinema, 1968-2008; 6 Monsters March On; References; Index

  • Fayetteville Mafia Press Laura's Ghost: Women Speak About Twin Peaks

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 1990, the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, opened with a murder mystery when a beautiful homecoming queen, wrapped in plastic, washed up on a cold and rocky beach. Laura Palmer’s character began as a plot device that triggered a small town to face its fractured self. But after three seasons and a film, Laura Palmer is no longer just a plot device. Instead of solely focusing on the murderer, like most traditional storytelling at the time, the audience gets to know the victim, a complex young woman who explores her sexuality and endures incredible abuse. Laura’s Ghost: Women Speak About Twin Peaks is an examination of Laura Palmer’s legacy on the 30th anniversary of Twin Peaks. Palmer’s character was one of the few frank and horrific representations of sexual abuse victims which did not diminish the strength and complexity of the victim. Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer, discusses the challenges of the role and how it has impacted herself as well as women she has met over the years, many of whom are survivors of sexual abuse. The role demanded Lee give all of her vulnerability as an actor to this role. This role is one she cannot escape, one with which she will forever be identified. It’s a role that still haunts her today. For many women, this character represents them. Here was a woman who was not just a victim, but who was owning her sexuality as well—a woman coming into her own and discovering her sources of power. This book is a reckoning in which women from the show and community speak about grief, mischief, humor, sexuality, strength, weakness, wickedness, and survival.Trade Review"Scholars looking for pop-culture references regarding abuse, women's issues, and feminist theories will be interested, and Laura's Ghost might just be a must-read for any true Twin Peaks fan." -- Melissa Minsker, Book List"Some of the women in the book (including the author) speak of their own histories of trauma, and speak of the catharsis they found in Laura's story. They may not have encountered the evil spirits that inhabit Lynch's imagined Pacific Northwest, but they've experienced the trauma." -- Kurt Gottschalk, Red Hook Star"The overarching consensus of the contributors that Stallings features in Laura's Ghost is that Laura's story has given visibility to women who have endured sexual abuse and assault. For many, their understanding of Laura as an inspirational figure is rooted in their own encounters with gender-based violence." -- Sophia Stewart, Los Angeles Books Review

  • Fayetteville Mafia Press Conversations With Mark Frost: Twin Peaks, Hill

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMark Frost, cocreator of both the original Twin Peaks and The Return, is often lost in the shadow of cocreator David Lynch in the eyes of critics and scholars. In fact, Frost played at least as crucial a role in developing the narrative, mythology, and aesthetic of those groundbreaking, critically revered series. Conversations with Mark Frost deconstructs that legendary partnership, while at the same time exploring Frost’s values, influences, thematic preoccupations, and approach to creating art—for the screen, the stage, and the printed page—as well as his thoughts on a wide variety of political, artistic, and social topics. Included, for example, are Frost's recollections of a bizarre encounter with Warren Beatty and Donald Trump in the mideighties, his days as a production assistant on Mister Roger's Neighborhood, his experiences working alongside the likes of David Milch in the legendarily competitive writers' room at Hill Street Blues, conversations about alien life and time travel with iconic film director Steven Spielberg, and much, much more. Trade Review"Twin Peaks fans will relish the two chapters about the show. Although Frost never comes out and bad-mouthes Lynch, per se, he has some interesting, and some might say negative, things to say about the auteur. And despite the positive facade Frost put on during the promotion leading up to and during the airing of the third season of Twin Peaks, he has some fascinating things to say about what went on behind the scenes, and what went wrong with might be the final season of Twin Peaks."
