Book Synopsis? In a prolific career spanning six decades, actor Burt Reynolds was one of the world''s most famous stars of film and television. As much a folk hero as a Hollywood celebrity, he began as a stuntman and bit player in B Westerns and TV shows before landing a starring role on NBC''s Riverboat (1959-1961). His breakthrough role in Deliverance (1972) made him famous and the sleeper hit Smokey and the Bandit (1977) made his name a household word. This first critical overview of Reynolds'' work examines his complete filmography, featuring candid discussions with costars and collaborators, exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and a wealth of film stills.Trade ReviewWayne Byrne's book on the cinematic and television career of Burt Reynolds is both entertaining and highly informative: this is a brilliant, professional biography of a sometimes misunderstood and underrated talent. If you think you knew Reynolds and his oeuvre, think again. Burt Reynolds on Screen is a definitive work that deserves to be read."—Paul Farren, Film Ireland"Byrne's book is a singular and compelling step towards establishing Reynolds as a true American Icon. His work is a clarion call for a revisionist project that will give this great actor the respect he has earned. This is not just a meticulously researched appraisal of a life's work but a serious statement about Reynold's importance to modern American cinema."—Matthew Nolan, senior lecturer and subject expert in creative media, Dublin Business School"Prolific author Wayne Byrne has penned a colossal contribution to the legacy of seven-time No. 1 box office star Burt Reynolds. His veracious attention to circumstance and detail is evident throughout the book. If you somewhat knew Burt Reynolds before the book, you certainly will know him after the book. I worked for Burt Reynolds as PR Director of his theater, appeared in two of his films, visited a dozen film sets, supported one of his protégés, and currently attend his Institute for Theatre Training Writing seminars. And yet this book tells me even more that I realized in my years of experiences. Once read, you will feel as if you were on the movie sets, too." —Peggy Gossett-Seidman, former public relations director at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre.

Book Synopsis The fighting female archetype--a self-reliant woman of great physical prowess--has become increasingly common in action films and on television. However, the progressive female identities of these narratives cannot always resist the persistent and problematic framing of male-female relationships as a battle of the sexes or other source of antagonism. Combining cultural analysis with close readings of key popular American film and television texts since the 1980s, this study argues that certain fighting female themes question regressive conventions in male-female relationships. Those themes reveal potentially progressive ideologies regarding female agency in mass culture that reassure audiences of the desirability of empowered women while also imagining egalitarian intimacies that further empower women. Overall, the fighting female narratives addressed here afford contradictory viewing pleasures that reveal both new expectations for and remaining anxieties about the stronTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book Synopsis The ongoing popularity of Leslie Stevens'' 1960s television masterwork The Outer Limits, as well as later series creations Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, has kept his name familiar to television fans. Surprisingly, very little writing exists on his earlier Broadway contributions or his seminal film and television production company, Daystar Productions. Stevens'' personal life also remains relatively unknown. This biography focuses on the origins of Daystar Productions as well as Stevens'' first years in Hollywood when he was married to actress Kate Manx. After meeting Manx in 1957, Stevens took her with him to Los Angeles and refashioned her into a dramatic film actress who would soon star in his startling, New Wave-style debut film, Private Property. That film, which Stevens made for just $40,000, would go on to gross several million dollars and open the doors to Hollywood for Manx and co-star Warren Oates. While OTrade ReviewBeautiful, gorgeous stuff here. A wonderful disentanglement of Leslie Stevens' early years in Hollywood; outlining what is essentially a wistfully sad story about power grabs and over reaching ambitions. Book Synopsis Both in life and death, Queen Victoria is among the most popular monarchs to be committed to film. Her reign was characterized by an explosion in media coverage that began to rely on images rather than words to tell her story. Even though Victoria has been labeled the first media monarch, the sheer magnitude of her screen presence has been neither chronicled nor fully appreciated until now. This book examines the growth and evolution of Queen Victoria''s on-screen image. From the satirical cartoons and silent films of the 19th century to the television shows, video games, and webcomics of the 21st, it demonstrates how the protean Victoria character has evolved, ultimately meaning many different things to many different people in many different ways. Each chapter looks at a facet of her character and includes analysis of how these media present Queen Victoria as a real person and shape her as a character acting within a narrative. • Seeing by Electricity

Duke University Press Seeing by Electricity

Book SynopsisAlready in the late nineteenth century, electricians, physicists, and telegraph technicians dreamed of inventing televisual communication apparatuses that would “see” by electricity as a means of extending human perception. In Seeing by Electricity Doron Galili traces the early history of television, from fantastical image transmission devices initially imagined in the 1870s such as the Telectroscope, the Phantoscope, and the Distant Seer to the emergence of broadcast television in the 1930s. Galili examines how televisual technologies were understood in relation to film at different cultural moments—whether as a perfection of cinema, a threat to the Hollywood industry, or an alternative medium for avant-garde experimentation. Highlighting points of overlap and divergence in the histories of television and cinema, Galili demonstrates that the intermedial relationship between the two media did not start with their economic and institutional rivalry of the late 1Trade Review“Digging into television's origins and discovering secret lineages and unexpected ancestors, Doron Galili unearths the true reasons that fiercely opposed—and indissolubly linked—television and cinema. A masterful contribution to media archeology.” -- Francesco Casetti, author of * The Lumière Galaxy: Seven Key Words for the Cinema to Come *“Assembling wonderful material and offering nuanced readings of both filmic and theoretical texts, Doron Galili makes important interventions in the ongoing debates over media specificity and television's historiography. He is part of a new generation of scholars who are helping to put television's complicated and often occluded genealogy into conversation with the latest media studies debates. A page-turner, Seeing by Electricity will resonate with a broad spectrum of readers.” -- William Uricchio, Professor of Comparative Media Studies, MIT"Seeing By Electricity ... historicizes a prolonged moment, or a mediascape, when boundaries between media were porous, whereas the otherwise antagonistic relationships between media can be seen as symbiotic. From this perspective, the book challenges a commonly accepted historical narrative, and suggests instead a more flexible and broader contextualization of radio, television, and film as mutually contributing networks." -- Rea Amit * Critical Inquiry *“Galili’s writing is flowing and engaging which makes the book an interesting read not only for scholars of television and media but for anyone who is interested in the field and the development of the technology. In the world where questions about media and media specificity arise again with the introduction of streaming services, looking at the way film, radio and early television interact gives an insight into intermediality. A valuable perspective for our post-cinema and post-television era.” -- Julia Stolyar * Early Popular Visual Culture *“Seeing by Electricity is a major contribution to the rapidly developing field of media archaeology. Galili pays appropriate obeisance to theorists including Siegfried Zielinski and Mary Ann Doane, but he grounds his arguments firmly in deeply researched historical accounts of optical devices and electrical instruments, conceptions of vision, imperial fantasies and utopian imaginaries…. Galili succeeds with aplomb.” -- John Wyver * Critical Studies in Television *“Seeing by Electricity offers its reader a nuanced and digestible consideration of the forces, entities, and contexts that shaped the conception, development, and perception of television in the United States and Europe from the late 1870s until the late 1930s.” -- Laura C. Brown * Media Industries *“Galili’s careful attention to the nineteenth and early twentieth century makes Seeing By Electricity a kind of escape to the past. As such it is an especially good pandemic read, allowing us to travel backwards whiles nevertheless speaking to our present landscape of video calls, online cocktail parties, remote learning, telecommuting, and binge-watching—all accelerated and amplified by social distancing and stay at home orders.” -- Alison Reiko Loader * Nineteenth Century Theatre and Film *"The book is well written and offers interesting glimpses of the early fascination with television..." -- J. M. King * Choice *“From time to time a book in one’s field of research comes along and you pick it up and cannot put it down. This is one such book.... What Galili has achieved is not just a technology-focused account ... but one which engages with cultural, economic, social, and political contexts also.” -- Jamie Medhurst * Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television *“Seeing by Electricity is a genuinely unique effort that is easy to read yet thought-provoking.... Seeing by Electricity is of tremendous value to those interested in television history, film and art theory, media and communications or cultural history, or the history of technology.” -- Bryant Macfarlane * JHistory, H-Net Reviews *“Seeing by Electricity is a scholarly work of the highest order, combining rigorous historical research and expansive theoretical engagement with key debates across television studies, film studies, and digital media studies to rethink fundamental assumptions about media history and notions of mediality and media change.” -- Ariel Rogers * Technology and Culture *“Galili’s excavation of the history of the medium that became known as television offers a model for how to think through both the recent past and the mercurial present of moving image transmission.... Deeply researched and thoroughly informed by theory, Seeing by Electricity’s discussion of media fantasy and reality ... offers exciting new pathways for thinking about the emergence of a new medium.” -- Christina G. Petersen * Journal of Cinema and Media Studies *"In its methodological and historiographical ambition to revisit some of the definitions of modernity as a guiding concept in media studies, Galili’s publication represents a culmination point of three decades of academic research into the medium’s long history." -- Anne-Katrin Weber * Cultural Critique *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction 1 Part I. New York University Press How to Watch Television Second Edition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA new edition that brings the ways we watch and think about television up to the presentWe all have opinions about the television shows we watch, but television criticism is about much more than simply evaluating the merits of a particular show and deeming it good or bad. Rather, criticism uses the close examination of a television program to explore that program's cultural significance, creative strategies, and its place in a broader social context. How to Watch Television, Second Edition brings together forty original essaysmore than half of which are new to this editionfrom today's leading scholars on television culture, who write about the programs they care (and think) the most about. Each essay focuses on a single television show, demonstrating one way to read the program and, through it, our media culture. From fashioning blackness in Empire to representation in Orange is the New Black and from the role of the reboot in Gilmore Girls Trade ReviewThere's quite simply no book out there that can match this in scope and quality. The contributors are a 'Who's Who' of contemporary television studies, and the prose is engaging and highly readable. If you're looking for models of how to think about television from a range of perspectives, you need look no further. -- Greg M. Smith, author of Beautiful TV: The Art and Argument of Ally McBealAsk anyone in Hollywood and they'll tell you the movies are dead. TV is where its at, and this book will show you why. Thompson and Mittell offer an essential guide to television today, featuring the most insightful critics writing about the most creative and engaging shows. Whether student, fan, or TV professional, it belongs on your bookshelf. -- Michael Curtin, co-author of The American Television IndustryThis book, unlike the manual that comes with your TV set, is utterly readable, highly engaging, and worth referring back to, long after you've switched on your favorite channel. . . . Regardless of which essay one chooses to tune in to, How to Watch Television is an accessible and impressive group of essays by a powerhouse cast of television scholars. -- Journal of American CultureThere's not a single dull page in this book. -- Jose Solis, PopmattersWhat happens when you give 40 smart television scholars ten pages each to write about a television show that interests them? You get a delightful book that is sure to become a favorite of television scholars and students alike. Thompson and Mittell have brought together authors who provide thoughtful criticism in an engaging style and cover just about every genre, historical period, and lens of analysis. Each essay's combination of brevity and detailed analysis makes the book likely to work well as both a course reader for undergraduates in television studies and a reference resource for those wanting to dive into research on individual shows. Though every essay adds something valuable to the collection, essays on Mad Men, Glee, M*A*S*H, I Love Lucy, Modern Family, NYPD Blue, The Twilight Zone, and The Walking Dead are worth the price of this fun, informative, and useful book, even for seasoned television scholars.Summing Up: Highly recommended. -- S. Pepper, ChoiceWith their urging in the introduction about how the essays serve as models for writing your own criticism, the editors seem to be addressing media studies students. But because of its well-commissioned and well-balanced tone and diversity/specificity of texts, it is just as instructive for a wide range of burgeoning or established TV scholars as well as inquisitive fans of the various programs. The collection manages to be potentially enjoyable and useful to scholars and TV fans alike. -- Kathleen Collins, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly[I]t is a damn good collection, featuring 40 different contributions from American scholars, plus Matt Hills from Aberystwyth and Roberta Pearson from Nottingham. Their contributions are organised under five main themes: Aesthetics and Style;TV Representations: Social Identity and Cultural Politics;TV Politics: Democracy, Nation, and the Public Interest;TV Industry: Industrial Practices and Structures; and TV Practices: Medium, Technology, and Everyday Life. Book SynopsisBlack women's work in television has been, since the beginning, a negotiation. Black Women and the Changing Television Landscape explores the steps black women, as actors, directors, and producers, have taken to improve representations of black people on the small screen. Beginning with The Beulah Show, Anderson articulates the interrelationship between US culture and the televisual, demonstrating the conditions under which black women particularly, and black people generally, exist in popular culture.Trade ReviewThis vital book offers an essential and engaging account of Black Women and the Changing Television Landscape. Focusing on a wide range of TV shows, industry experiences, and moments in history, Lisa M. Anderson carefully considers Black women’s ambivalent relationship with television, and their negotiation of Hollywood. * Francesca Sobande, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Studies, Cardiff University, UK *In Black Women and the Changing Television Landscape, Lisa Anderson presents us a detailed account of the changing landscape of television and its impact of Black women from the beginning of the medium until current times. She focuses on both the effect of these representations, but also the agency of Black actresses and creators when developing characters and stories. The book outlines a trajectory highlighting the constraints of stereotypical representations in earlier television works and the more contemporary ones, which provides a more diverse representation of the Black experience. This newer, diverse representation has the potential to liberate Black folks from the trite yet pervasive and long-standing stereotypes by presenting alternative lenses with which to look at Black experiences in the U.S. The project is well-documented and equally well-written. A must read for anyone trying to understand why representation matters. * Carmen R. Lugo-Lugo, Professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies and American Studies and Culture, Washington State University, USA *Ambitious in scope and intimate in detail, Anderson’s book provides a needed perspective on seven decades of Black women who navigated and changed the landscape of American television. Black Women and the Changing Television Landscape is a roadmap for how Black women actors, directors, producers, writers, and showrunners actually changed the landscape so that others can lead the way forward. * C. It analyses classic dramas including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Edge of Darkness, A Very British Coup and Spooks. This book will be an invaluable resource for television scholars interested in a new perspective on the history of television drama and intelligence scholars seeking an analysis of the popular representation of espionage with a strong political focus, as well as fans of cult British television and general readers interested in British cultural history.Trade Review‘Jo Oldham’s very readable book explores two of the most popular, but relatively neglected, forms of television drama: the spy drama and the conspiracy thriller. Generically related but epistemologically distinct, the changing nature of the two forms and the waxing and waning of their appearance on British television screens has much to do with the historical context of their production, as Oldham illustrates very well in a diachronic study […] Such changes may not bode well for the radical potential of spy and conspiracy drama to stir things up in the future but it is to Oldham’s credit that his well-researched and persuasively argued book makes us want to revisit some of the key "paranoid narratives" of the last 50 years’.Lez Cooke, Royal Holloway, University of London, Critical Studies in Television, Vol. 13, No. 4 (December 2018)'Paranoid visions is a welcome addition to studies of television genres and to emerging work on the spy genre on British screens. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAn exciting new strand in The Television Series, the ‘Moments in Television’ collections celebrate the power and artistry of television, whilst interrogating key critical concepts in television scholarship. Each ‘Moments’ book is organised around a provocative binary theme. Epic / everyday explores the presence within television of the epic and the everyday. It argues that attention to ideas of the epic and notions of the everyday can illuminate television programmes in new ways. The book explores an eclectic range of TV fictions, including Game of Thrones, Lost and Dr Who. Contributors from diverse perspectives come together to expand and enrich the kind of close analysis most commonly found in television aesthetics. Sustained, detailed programme analyses are sensitively framed within historical, technological, institutional, cultural, creative and art-historical contexts.Trade Review'In this addition to the "Moments in Television" series from Manchester University Press, the authors of this essay collection employ varying definitions of "epic" (e.g., the hero’s journey, grandeur, a sweeping narrative) and "everyday" (e.g., omnipresence of television in everyday life, representations of everyday life) to compare and contrast how the concepts play out in a number of television texts. For example, the chapter on Lost contrasts mundane tasks like laundry with an overarching epic narrative that includes a monster, the afterlife, and time travel. In the chapter on Columbo, the central question of life and death serves as the epic canvas, but the detective uses the disruption of daily routine, like a misplaced bath towel, to uncover the murderer. • Rowman & Littlefield Gilmore Girls: A Cultural History

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNo longer just a cult classic, Gilmore Girls is a cultural staple for TV fans. Airing from 2000–2007, Gilmore Girls focused on the relationship between thirty-something single mom Lorelai and her teenage daughter, Rory. While exploring themes of family, romantic love, friendship, and life’s choices, this quirky show featured fast-paced dialogue, funny quips, and a steady stream of pop-culture references. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Gilmore Girls served as a launching pad for the careers of its stars—including Lauren Graham, Melissa McCarthy, Alexis Bledel, Jared Padalecki, and Milo Ventimiglia. The series’ popularity was so enduring that ten years after its initial run, a revival season was released on Netflix. In Gilmore Girls: A Cultural History, Lara C. Stache and Rachel Davidson offer an engaging analysis of the show’s seven seasons and revival. The authors examine how the show serves as a representation of American culture and politics, reflects complexity within multiple mother-daughter dynamics, and employed literature, movies, and music to drive the dialogue and plot. They also explore how the choices made in the series reflect social values of the time, reinforce and challenge traditional ideas of gender and feminism, and unpack the cultural significance of this endearing series. As both a mirror and a construction of contemporary American culture, the series achieved critical accolades and became a cult classic, at once both unassuming and dynamic. This book offers new ways for fans to appreciate the appeal and value of this binge-worthy favorite as part of the larger culture in which it exists. Gilmore Girls: A Cultural History will be of interest to fans of the show as well as to scholars and students of television, media, and American popular culture.Trade ReviewAuthors Stache (communication, visual, & performing arts, Governors State Univ., IL; Breaking Bad: A Cultural History) and Davidson (communication, Hanover Coll., IN) examine the show’s depictions of parenting, feminism, and class clashes through a cultural studies lens, while still reveling in Dean vs. Jess deliberations. * Library Journal *

The first and only guide to the beloved and star-studded Star Trek: The Animated Series, the in-canon (mostly) continuation of the iconic Star Trek: Original Series. Star Trek was left for dead in 1969, after the cancellation of The Original Series (TOS). However, even though new adventures of the Enterprise and its crew were not being produced, it remained in the zeitgeist due to syndication and fan-run conventions. As a result, Star Trek became more popular and led to Gene Roddenberry and Filmation Studios continuing the Enterprise's original five-year mission on Saturday morning television. Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS) was a critical success, airing 22 episodes over two seasons and earning the franchise its first Emmy Award in 1975. The show featured the voices of almost the entire original cast, including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, along with TOS writers Dorothy Fontana ("Journey to Babel"), David Gerrold ("The Trouble with Tribbles"), acclaimed science-fiction author Larry Niven, and many more. This book is the first officially dedicated to TAS, and provides fans with behind-the-scenes production documents, never-before-seen art, and all-new interviews with the people who produced the Enterprise's new animated adventures. Star Trek: The Official Guide to The Animated Series reveals the efforts it took to translate TOS into animated form, includes a Databank encyclopedia of new and returning characters, ships, and planets, as well as trivia, bloopers, and TAS's connections to other Star Trek shows.

Book SynopsisThe eminent psychologist Carl Jung is best known for such indelible contributions to modern thought as the concept of the collective unconscious, but his wide-spread work can also be fruitfully employed to analyze popular culture. Frames of Mind offers an introduction to the world of Post-Jungian film and television studies, examining how Jung’s theories can heighten our understanding of everything from Chinatown and Star Trek to advertisements. In this illuminating psychoanalysis of our media environment, Luke Hockley probes questions such as why we have genuine emotional responses to film events we know to be fictional, why we are compulsively driven to watch television, and how advertisers use unconscious motifs to persuade viewers. Trade Review“A beautiful job! Hockley’s is a big screen approach, for he seeks to link Jungian and post-Jungian ideas about film with the sounds and images that flicker across everyone’s everyday experience. In this mixture of the formal and the informal, he performs an act of therapy for Jungian media criticism itself, rooting it (for its own good) in the popular and the ubiquitous. The process brings out aspects of Jung’s work on sexuality and the body that often get overlooked in academic circles.”—Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology, University of Essex Table of ContentsChapter 1: 'Cinema as Illusion and Reality' - Page 21 - Luke Hockley Chapter 2: 'Watching Films: The Affective Power of Cinema' - Page 35 - Luke Hockley Chapter 3: 'Chinatown: Investigating Affect' - Page 47 - Luke Hockley Chapter 4: 'A Jungian Approach to Television' - Page 63 - Luke Hockley Chapter 5: 'Narcissism and the Alchemy of Advertising' - Page 77 - Luke Hockley Chapter 6: 'Star Trek: Some Jungian Thoughts' - Page 91 - Luke Hockley Chapter 7: 'Technology as Modern Myth and Magic' - Page 109 - Luke Hockley Chapter 8: 'Identity and the Internet' - Page 123 - Luke Hockley

But her detailed and thoughtful account reveals so much about the history of a transformative television genre, the evolution of an iconic cable channel, and the construction of identity for an entire generation, making it essential reading to understand contemporary American media and culture.” -- Jason Mittell, author of * Television and American Culture *"My mother used to tell me that Jersey Shore would rot my brain; with Millennials Killed the Video Star, Amanda Ann Klein would seem to agree. In this release, the East Carolina University film professor helps make sense of the noise, walking readers through MTV’s evolution from music videos to scripted reality TV—maximizing stereotypes about race, gender, and class along the way, and shaping how an entire generation would come to understand identity." -- Emma Kenfield * IndyWeek *“[Millennials Killed the Video Star] is a fascinating analysis of media construction and presentation of identities, and how audiences respond to or reject those identities.... Klein’s writing is thoughtful and crisp.... Her writing blends an academic perspective and a fan perspective to produce a thoroughly entertaining analysis.” -- Fiona McQuarrie * PopMatters *"Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; professionals." -- C. A. Nadon * Choice *“Through her insightful and engaging writing, Klein successfully weaves together industry studies, media and cultural analysis, interviews, and an entertaining retelling of her own personal encounter with Jersey Shore’s DJ Pauly D. The author successfully crafts a book that would appeal to multiple audiences across disciplines.” -- Abshi Iftin * Journal of Popular Culture *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction. Book SynopsisLynn Spigel explores historical snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s, showing how TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture.Trade Review“In this brilliant book Lynn Spigel examines TV snapshots as an activity, hobby art, expressive medium, and a thing people did with television, convincingly arguing for the importance of thinking about how photography and television work together. She reorients television studies away from programs and questions of spectatorship toward an exploration of the home as a ‘theater of everyday life,’ offering a diverse picture of how people use television, what the medium means, and where and how people live. I love this book and can’t wait to teach it.” -- Pamela Robertson Wojcik, author of * The Apartment Plot: Urban Living in American Film and Popular Culture, 1945 to 1975 *"Spigel uses midcentury photographs of people posing next to television sets to construct a fascinating study of Americana. . . . A vital addition to media studies and popular culture collections." -- Claire Sewell * Library Journal *"Spigel indicates that she worked on the book during the years when the center of gravity of television shifted from broadcast to digital streaming. Her archive of snapshots documents a phase of the medium's development shrinking into the rearview mirror. But they are also artifacts embodying something now much more familiar. The compact camera and the TV set correspond to two phases in the circulation of imagery: production and consumption respectively. In these snapshots, the image cycle is limited: flow, not a flood. The screen remains part of domestic space—and not yet, as it's becoming now, a home of sorts in its own right." -- Scott McLemee * Inside Higher Ed *"Spigel has yet again shown herself to be a signal historian of the family, helping us make sense of the ways we actually were, in the flickering light of the pressure to be otherwise." -- Hannah Zeavin * New York Review of Books *“Spigel dives deep into histories of race, sexuality, family and domesticity, architecture, and more, as they are called up by these snapshots. The result is a rich, wide-ranging historical account of cultural, social, and familial practices surrounding both television and photography that extrapolate what are often considered to be the dominant uses of these two media.” -- Bruno Guaraná * Film Quarterly *"Displaying a sophisticated mastery of media studies, photographic history, and contemporary art theory, Spigel shifts seamlessly through a wide span of intellectual underpinnings. . . . At times whimsical and frequently revealing gender and class relationships, this work is engaging and thoughtful. Highly recommended. Advanced undergraduates through faculty." -- D. Book SynopsisMainstreaming Gays discusses a key transitional period linking the eras of legacy and streaming, analyzing how queer production and interaction that had earlier occurred outside the mainstream was transformed by multiple converging trends: the emergence of digital media, the rising influence of fan cultures, and increasing interest in LGBTQ content within commercial media. The U.S. networks Bravo and Logo broke new ground in the early 2000s and 2010s with their channel programming, as well as bringing in a new cohort of LGBTQ digital content creators, providing unprecedented opportunities for independent queer producers, and hosting distinctive spaces for queer interaction online centered on pop culture and politics rather than dating. These developments constituted the ground from which recent developments for LGBTQ content and queer sociality online have emerged. Mainstreaming Gays is critical reading for those interested in media production, fandom, subcultures, and LGBTQ digital media. Trade Review"Mainstreaming Gays investigates the role that LGBTQ media professionals, television, and online content played at a pivotal moment in media convergence and the consolidation of multiplatform content delivery. Impeccably researched and accessibly written, Eve Ng’s book offers a nuanced analysis of the central role LGBTQ media and marketing played during a vital period in media history." — Katherine Sender, professor and director of Graduate Studies, Department of Communication, Cornell University "How did legacy TV morph into streaming and take queerness with it? Eve Ng brings intellectual force and clarity to a key change in queer media, redefining what 'mainstream' means and showing us how power, capital, and reinvention have long sparred—and danced—on the fields of queer culture." — Lisa Henderson, Dean, Faculty of Media and Information Studies, Western University "Chronicled in these pages are a host of culturally significant portals for LGBTQ news and entertainment which, Ng convincingly argues, contributed to the mainstreaming of historically marginalized communities. With her rigorous investigation into the people who created and benefited from these sites, Ng shows how the distance between the margins and the center, fans and producers, amateurs and professionals, is much narrower than scholars typically assume. This is an essential book for scholars of queer media.” — Aymar Jean Christian, author of Open TV: Innovation Beyond Hollywood and the Rise of Web TelevisionTable of ContentsIntroduction – Between Legacy and Streaming Chapter 1 – New Convergences in LGBTQ Media Production: Digital Pathways Into Commercial Media Chapter 2 – The New Queer Digital Spaces Chapter 3 – Gaystreaming, Dualcasting, and Changing Queer Alignments Chapter 4 – Beyond Queer Niche: Remaking the Mainstream Conclusion – Legacies and Futures for Mainstreaming Gays Appendix – List of Research Interviews and Events Acknowledgments Bibliography Index
