Book Synopsis'SUCH AN IMPORTANT BOOK... ESSENTIAL READING FOR PARENTS' Gabby Logan'INCREDIBLY POWERFUL... A MUST-READ' Victoria DerbyshireWhen Dan died, I realised many things. I realised drugs were closer to our door than I'd thought. I realised drugs have become normalised for young people. I realised drugs are more affordable, accessible and available than ever before. And I realised I didn't know enough, and nor did Dan, to navigate the choices and come back alive. When Daniel Spargo-Mabbs was 16, he went to a party and never came home. The party was an illegal rave and Daniel - bright, popular, big-hearted prom king Dan - died from a fatally strong overdose of MDMA.In the seven years since, the range of substances has become wider, the levels of exposure higher, and the threat to young people's physical and mental health from drugs greater than ever before. Despite this, there is almost no guidance for parents to help their children navigate this perilous landscape and to stay safe. To come home at night. To grow up.This book is everything Fiona Spargo-Mabbs wishes she'd known, everything she wishes she'd done, before she lost her son. Because however you parent, and whatever you do, at some point your child is likely to be in a situation where they have to make a decision about drugs. What if that decision is 'yes'? Do they know what the risks are? Do they have strategies they can bring to bear if things go wrong? I Wish I'd Known interweaves the story of one family's terrible loss with calm, measured and practical advice for parents. It explores the risks posed by illegal drugs, and explains the way the adolescent brain makes decisions. There is practical advice for saying safe, information on reducing harm, and 'talking points' for parents and their children to do, talk about, look at, look up or consider.A life lost to drugs is a loss like no other. Throughout the book, Daniel's story - his life, his death and what happened afterwards - not only provides a compelling reminder of the importance of those conversations, but also serves as an unforgettable eulogy to a son, brother, boyfriend and friend whose legacy continues to touch, and perhaps even save, the lives of other young people.Trade ReviewIncredibly powerful and also very practical. Fiona wants to make sure no mum or dad ever has to go through what she went through. This book is a must-read. * Victoria Derbyshire *This is such an important book[...] Fiona has used her devastatingly sad experience with Daniel to help all of us and this book should be essential reading for parents of teenagers. * Gabby Logan *Incredibly powerful. But in amongst the heart-breaking story, the information, advice and evidence is meticulously researched, and navigates every parent's worst nightmare without scaremongering. This book is an absolute must for any parent wanting to have a meaningful conversation with their children about drugs. * Alicia Drummond, MBACP Accred., Founder, Teen Tips *A vital book which has the power to prevent tragic drug related deaths among young people. A must read for any parent. * Paul North, Volteface *Dan's beautiful, intelligent, witty, big-hearted character is the golden thread in I Wish I'd Known. There are excellent practical, achievable ideas for parents and professionals; there are also personal testimonies and insights into the legal and medical systems that make for essential reading for anyone concerned about young people's drug use. [From] living through the most painful experience a parent can face, I know I Wish I'd Known will grow many good things from a very bad thing. * Emma Crawshaw, CEO, Crew2000 *Beautifully written... a personal journey through the loss of a son, the book [also] provides a valuable resource of factual detail about drugs and alcohol. A must for parents, those working with young people, and young people themselves. * Betsy Thom, Professor of Health Policy, Middlesex University *Enlightening and informative... A book that educates as much as it moves, it deserves to be read far and wide, by parents and professionals alike. * Dr Ronny Cheung *A testament to parental love, and a resource of tremendous importance for all those who care about young people. * Lady Kate Cayley, Deputy Head of Boarding, Marlborough College *This book is a very significant achievement. * David Mackintosh, Global Public Health Network *An ambitious and important work. Along the way, Brooks takes readers on a tour of the websites that most parenting manuals would rather pretend don't exist. Yet this is the stuff your kids are all over, on a daily basis. There is porn, there are hallucinogens, there is cyberbullying and suicidal ideation. Brooks' point is that to remain completely unaware of their existence can mean that as a parent, you end up getting blindsided. And being blindsided means you won't know what to say and how to say it when things go wrong. You'll be surprised, shocked but you'll also be reassured. This book will help you to understand and support your kids. They won't thank you, but they might hate you less.Trade ReviewThe most reassuring thing about this book is that it's so good. How anyone can have an adolescence as deranged as Brooks's was and still produce work of this calibre is final proof that what your mother said was right: it's only a phase. * Daily Mail *Every parent should read this book * Clover Stroud *A must-read for those with teenage kids * Candice Brathwaite *The book to read * The Times *

Wilfrid Laurier University Press The Dominion of Youth: Adolescence and the Making

Book SynopsisAdolescence, like childhood, is more than a biologically defined life stage: it is also a sociohistorical construction. The meaning and experience of adolescence are reformulated according to societal needs, evolving scientific precepts, and national aspirations relative to historic conditions. Although adolescence was by no means a "discovery" of the early twentieth century, it did assume an identifiably modern form during the years between the Great War and 1950. The Dominion of Youth: Adolescence and the Making of Modern Canada, 1920 to 1950 captures what it meant for young Canadians to inhabit this liminal stage of life within the context of a young nation caught up in the self-formation and historic transformation that would make modern Canada. Because the young at this time were seen paradoxically as both the hope of the nation and the source of its possible degeneration, new policies and institutions were developed to deal with the "problem of youth." This history considers how young Canadians made the transition to adulthood during a period that was "developmental"âboth for youth and for a nation also working toward individuation. During the years considered here, those who occupied this "dominion" of youth would see their experiences more clearly demarcated by generation and culture than ever before. With this book, Cynthia Comacchio offers the first detailed study of adolescence in early-twentieth-century Canada and demonstrates how young Canadians of the period became the nation's first modern teenagers.Trade Review``Extensively research ... this book makes an important contribution to the history of youth, to family history, and to Canadian history more broadly.'' -- Canadian Historical Association Bulletin, Volume 34, Number 2, Summer 2008, 200809``This study is remarkable on several fronts. No study to date has analyzed concomitantly the evolving social perceptions of youth, and the changing attitudes and activites of teenagers alongside an analysis of wider social developments in such depth and over such an extended period of time.... Not unrelated ... is her impressive use of extensive and varied sources.... [Comacchio's] study lays new `historiographical ground work' that will assuredly become a mandatory point of departure for future scholars.'' -- Nicole Neatby, Simon Fraser University -- Canadian Historical Review, November 2008, 200811``Offers a fascinating account of young Canadians during the first half of the twentieth century. In a thoroughly detailed and densely researched work, Comacchio synthesizes several important themse related to adolescent historiogrgaphy including theoretical concepts of youth, familial relations, dating, school, work, and leisure.... What makes the analysis truly innovative is the attention paid to the 1920s as the focus for the emergence of a modern adolescent concept.'' -- Carrie Dickenson, McMaster University -- H-NET BOOK REVIEW, March 2007, 200704``The Dominion of Youth is an outstanding achievement that will be useful to researchers across many fields and in classes relating to transnational histories of youth, education, nationalism, and modern Canada. Comacchio's work breaks new ground for North American childhood studies. She brings important new observations into the growing global conversation about the history of adolescence and the challenges of finding the voices, practices, and cultural realities of adolescence in the past.'' -- Don Romesburg, Sonama State University -- History of Education Quarterly, Volume 48, Number 3, August 2008, 200809``This book about the creation and social construction of adolescence in Canada will appeal to historians who are increasingly turning their attention to the second half of the 20th century, where youth experiences and youth culture surface as major themes. As Comacchio clearly demonstrates, the 1950s and 1960s did not mark the emergence of a youth culture in Canada because a separate youth culture predated that period by as much as 30 years. The Dominion of Youth clearly and convincingly establishes the fact and therefore it should become a standard reference on 20th-century you and popular culture.'' -- Linda M. Book SynopsisIn her decades of practice and academic research, Dr. Christa Santangelo, a psychologist and assistant clinical professor at the University of California-San Francisco, has seen many relationships devastated by the emotional hurricane that teenagers can inflict on a family. Yet Dr. Santangelo also understands how that conflict can be resolved and a new way forward mapped together between parents and teen. In A New Theory of Teenagers, she gives parents the advice, tips, support, and big-picture overview needed to see the teen years as an opportunities for growth and positive relationship changes. With counterintuitive steps (such as "Endure Emotions"), she offers hope and empowerment. Dr. Santangelo asserts that parents have a far greater impact on conflict with their teen than they may realize, metaphorically handing parents back the power to shift the situation to harmony. And, Dr. Santangelo does it with a fresh and multi-dimensional approach to the parent-teen relationship by integrating conventional psychology with alternative methods including yoga and meditation-intended to work on building trust, sitting with and understanding emotions, and seeing room for positivity in the midst of it all.

Book SynopsisA mantra has developed in the late 20th century and early 21st century that has an underlying bias again overweight and obese individuals, who are blamed for their "disease" and told by society to lose weight or suffer the consequences. Art was used from 22,000 BC through the 19th century to glorify obesity, while art of the current era vilifies or mocks obesity. Considerable discrimination awaits the obese child, adolescent, or adult in current society, whether in the form of bullying in school, limited social life, or job refusal. Concern over obesity leads many youth to unhealthy diet practices that involve starvation and/or bulimic features. In this book, leading international experts discuss obesity in adolescence. Indeed, what are the ethics of obesity management for the health care professionals of today? Perhaps proper obesity management begins with an examination of why obesity was desired for so many centuries, an acceptance that obesity is not the patient''s fault, that many overweight/obese individuals are happy as well as healthy and that the economics of current obesity "treatment" must be re-examined and reconfigured. This book has been created and edited by four leading physicians in child health and human development.

Skyhorse Publishing The Awkward Phase: The Uplifting Tales of Those

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on the popular Tumblr, a collection of funny stories that commemorate the awkward phases in our lives.Back in the 1990s, when slap bracelets and Velcro ruled supreme, two adolescents were stumbling their way through life on gangly limbs. One, Claire Linic, had self-permed her bowl cut, and the other, Tyler Gillespie, had purchased self-tanner, telling the cashier it was for his girlfriend. Now in their twenties and still just a tiny bit awkward, Linic and Gillespie have joined forces to ask the question, “If we could talk to our fourteen-year-old selves, what would we tell them now?”Based on the hit Tumblr “The Awkward Phase,” this book answers that question with personal stories and cringe-worthy photos from seasoned comedians, YouTube stars, and people like the rest of us that cover everything from sweaty-palm moments to bad band photos. In these pages, you’ll hear about the moment Shaun Sperling realized he was gay at a Richard Simmons’s workout studio, how Bente Engelstoft made her own bra out of her dad's old underwear, and why even though Robert Bacon’s awkward phase was mortifying, it was the beginning of his new, happier life.Ultimately, The Awkward Phase encourages us to laugh and celebrate the moments that have helped shape who we are. As Gillespie and Linic say, “Everyone is in on the joke. You don’t have to eat your lunch alone in the bathroom stall. You can sit with us.”

When the results are as adroit and affecting as Marita Golden's work, it is more than satisfying; it is a cause for celebration."—Toni Morrison, Nobel LaureateTwo decades ago, Marita was the first Black writer to address the horrifying statistic that haunts all Black mothers: the leading cause of death among Black males under twenty-one is homicide. Today, police brutality rages on as millions call for the reformation of our broken law enforcement in the wake of the traumatic murders of Black teen boys like Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Daunte Wright. Read an intimate account of a mother’s efforts to save her son. Writing her son’s story against the backdrop of a society plagued by systemic racism, economic inequality, and mass incarceration, Golden offers a form of witness and testimony in a time of crisis for Black Americans. Learn how to grapple with the realities of Black America. Join Golden as she confronts the root causes of violence inflicted upon Black teen boys and reassesses the legacy of her own generation's struggle for civil rights. Explore Black boys’ difficult road to adulthood in the U.S. and learn why single Black mothers are often wrongly blamed for their sons’ actions.Gain invaluable advice and knowledge from trustworthy sources. Book SynopsisA provocative, personal, and useful look at boyhood, and a radical plea for rethinking masculinity and teaching young men to give and receive love “Surprising . . . [Black’s] tone is so lovely, his empathy so clear . . . Black’s writing is modest, clear, conversational . . . corny, maybe. But helpful. Like a dad.”—The New York Times Book Review With hope and with humor, Michael Ian Black skillfully navigates the complex gender issues of our time and delivers a poignant answer to an urgent question: How can we be, and raise, better men? Part memoir, part advice book, and written as a heartfelt letter to his college bound son, A Better Man offers up a way forward for boys, men, and anyone who loves them. Comedian, writer, and father Black examines his complicated relationship with his own father, explores the damage and rising violence caused by the expectations placed on boys to “man up,” and searches for the best way to help young men be part of the solution, not the problem. “If we cannot allow ourselves vulnerability,” he writes, “how are we supposed to experience wonder, fear, tenderness?”Trade Review“Raw, intimate, and true . . . A Better Man cracked me wide open, and it’s a template for the conversation we need to be having with our boys.”—Peggy Orenstein, bestselling author of Boys & SexA BuzzFeed Most-Anticipated Book of the Year “[Black’s] tone is so lovely, his empathy so clear . . . He does wonderful work breaking down the masculine coding surrounding his own behaviors.”—The New York Times “Written as a letter to his son, comedian Black’s reflections on masculinity’s pitfalls and how to raise—and be—a more enlightened guy will resonate with parents and teens alike.”—People Magazine “We need this book . . . To read A Better Man now, when the world often seems beyond repair, so many generations of men having steered us into calamity with their brittleness and hubris and idiocy—one could wonder whether even a good book can make a difference. But then you’re snapped back to Black’s simple decency, and intelligence and love for his son, and you think, Oh man, maybe.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Essential reading for both men and boys.”—Chicago Tribune “Parents will be moved and enlightened by Black’s thoughtful advice.”—Publishers Weekly “There's something for everyone in these pages. Hand this to anyone who loved David Sedaris's Calypso.”—Booklist, starred review “Heartfelt lessons for his college-bound son . . . Black lays out his thoughts and feelings with few defenses up and a comic lightness that doesn't belie the book's rather heavy truths . . . Thoughtful ruminations on masculinity in the modern age . . . Whether you're a parent or simply thinking about life choices, there's both melancholy and wisdom to be found here.” —Kirkus Reviews “Both thoughtful and lighthearted, this work will appeal to anyone interested in masculinity and modern gender roles.” —Library Journal “I think about the subject matter of Michael Ian Black's new book all the time. As a parent of both boys and girls, I find myself rebuffing the gender-based cultural assumptions that are foisted on them more frequently than I could have ever imagined. Thank you Michael Ian Black for challenging society's antiquated approach to raising boys, and deepening the conversation about what we actually want for our kids. Sir, you are a good egg.” —Samantha Bee, host of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee “Gorgeous, authentic, and deeply thoughtful. This book is the perfect gift for a generation of men and boys desperate for guidance but raised to be afraid to ask for it. The way Michael Ian Black models vulnerability and writes about his own pain gives permission to every man across America to do it too. Michael's voice is necessary now more than ever, to offer men a different path, where they can be curious about their own gender and mount their own revolution for better definition of masculinity. I’m so glad this book exists.” —Liz Plank, author of For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity “It will never fail to amaze me that the man I best knew as Levon, a crushed velvet suit-wearing, $240 worth of pudding-rubbing smooth talker on ‘The State,’ has written a book that is at once insightful, incisive, deeply kind, urgent and wise (and of course funny as hell.) But that's what A Better Man is. The book isn't so much a call to create a new way of being a man as it to remember our innate and basic goodness.”—Joshua David Stein, author of To Me He Was Just Dad “I couldn’t put this down. An important book for anybody with a son. Michael Ian Black tackles the tough subject of masculinity in unexpected, tender, and sometimes funny ways.” —Alyssa Milano, actor and humanitarian “Obviously, Michael Ian Black can be funny, but who knew he could write something so raw, intimate, and true? A Better Man cracked me wide open, and it’s a template for the conversation we need to be having with our boys. So, if you have a son, are a son, or know anyone who has ever been a son, just . . . please, read this book.” —Peggy Orenstein, bestselling author of Boys Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity “A Better Man is a beautifully written letter from a father to his son. In a wise and nuanced way, Black challenges popular culture’s view of masculinity. Without saying that we have to throw all ideas we have of manhood out of the window, he is reminding his son, and also us, that kindness, love and empathy—as well as strength and courage - are all important qualities - for all men. He’s reminding us that to love, and to care for one another, is not a feminine quality—it’s a human quality.” —Kim Evensen, author of The Real Bro Code and CEO of the Brothers organization “[This book] resonated with me like no other book has in years.”—Masked Library “Poignant . . . this book should be more popular. It’s really about what it means to be a man in today’s world, and how to be supportive of inclusivity and vulnerability. There are lessons in this book for everybody.”—Elle.com
