ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Hydraulic performance of an impermeable submerged
Book SynopsisIn the face of the enormous destruction caused by the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami event, it is necessary to utilize more effective means of tsunami mitigation to prevent such tragedies. Based on the experiences gathered in storm wave damping by using submerged structures, Agnieszka Strusinska examines the applicability of artificial reefs as an integrated part of a multi-defence line strategy for tsunami attenuation. In her study, she first discusses the results of laboratory experiments in order to identify the difference in the nonlinear interaction of storm and tsunami-like solitary waves with an impermeable submerged structure of a finite width (including generation of wave breaking and wave fission). With this basic knowledge, the damping performance of an artificial reef under tsunami impact is determined as a ratio of wave transmission, wave reflection, and wave energy dissipation for varying reef geometries and incident wave conditions using a Boussinesq-type numerical model.

University Press of Southern Denmark European Historiography of Technology
Book SynopsisThis is an anthology about technology''s role in the modernisation process. It is written by a European group of historians of technology. Technological modernisation is very much a question of transferring technology from an innovating culture to a culture aspiring to economic growth. But technology is not only a lever of riches. Sometimes it was not even that. Technology in this anthology is not defined as artefacts only, but as skills and culture, too. Technology transfer was, perhaps, the most important agent of modernisation. Consequently, modernisation must be understood as a complex internationalisation of technological competence. Technological artefacts will always be embedded in a cultural environment. During transfer the recipient culture is likely to be upset, because transfer of technology invariably means transfer of cultural values. Sometimes the recipient culture refuses the technology transfer, sometimes it manages to shape the technological artefact according to its own cultural values, but quite often the recipient cultures succumb. The modernisation process can be seen as technology transfer smoothing out divergencies between cultures of European nation states. Or a smelting pot of technological artefacts and skills. This volume is an attempt to study the relationship between technology as artefacts and skills and cultural environments, academies of science, education systems and ethical values in a comparative European perspective. The papers were given at a conference in Roskilde in 1992 attended by some 40 historians of technology from Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

Andriy Burkov The Hundred-Page Machine Learning Book
Book SynopsisAs its title says, it's the hundred-page machine learning book. It was written by an expert in machine learning holding a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence with almost two decades of industry experience in computer science and hands-on machine learning. This is a unique book in many aspects. It is the first successful attempt to write an easy to read book on machine learning that isn't afraid of using math. It's also the first attempt to squeeze a wide range of machine learning topics in a systematic way and without loss in quality. The book contains only those parts of the huge body of material on machine learning developed since the 1960s that have proven to have a significant practical value. A beginner in machine learning will find in this book just enough details to get a comfortable level of understanding of the field and start asking the right questions. Practitioners with experience will use this book as a collection of pointers to the directions of further self-improvement.The book also comes in handy when brainstorming at the beginning of a project, when you try to answer the question whether a given technical or business problem is 'machine-learnable' and, if yes, which techniques you should try to solve it.The book comes with a wiki which contains pages that extend some book chapters with additional information: Q&A, code snippets, further reading, tools, and other relevant resources. Thanks to the continuously updated wiki this book like a good wine keeps getting better after you buy it.
