Book Synopsis''Great characters, fine writing, totally engrossing'' STEPHEN KING It might have been the end of days. Instead it was the beginning of something shockingly new. They called the comet Cain, after the astronomer who discovered it. It passed 500,000 miles from Earth. We were spared planetary destruction and granted a light show like no other. But, one year later, Earth span into the debris field left by the comet and a meteor storm struck. Roads, buildings and even a small town were annihilated. The meteors impacted heavily around the dying mining town of Northfall, Minnesota. It was the night of a mysterious double murder, the deed overshadowed by the discovery that the burning remains of the rock contained an unknown substance more precious than gold: the Ninth Metal. And with that discovery, everything changed.Benjamin Percy is an award-winning novelist, celebrated comic books writer and author of the WolTrade ReviewPraise for THE NINTH METAL * : *When Benjamin Percy publishes a novel, I have got to read that novel. THE NINTH METAL continues his streak of thrilling, incisive genre bending goodness. It's a sci-fi novel, a crime novel and a super-hero novel, too. Audacious and intelligent and exactly what I was dying to read * Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling *Ben Percy will serve you the impossible-and by the end of every chapter, you will believe it and feel it as truth. Whether you choose to think of him as the Elmore Leonard of rural Minnesota or the Stephen King of Science Fiction, Percy-with his extraordinary and unrelenting eye-dishes up humanity like some kind of otherworldly blue plate special, at once deeply familiar and wildly new * Margaret Stohl, No. 1 New York Times Bestselling Author *Take one part dystopia, one part sci-fi, two parts apocalypse, then ride them roughshod through a bleak and bloody western, and it still wouldn't get close to what Ben Percy does here, which is blow open the core of humanity's dark heart * Marlon James, Booker Prize winning author of Black Leopard, Red Wolf *The plot is dynamic, featuring multiple viewpoints as well as corporate malfeasance, spooky cults, and family drama. This sounds complicated, and it is, but all of these moving parts work together due to strong characterization, especially the cheery rookie police officer Stacie Toal. The action is vivid without being too graphic, contributing to an overall cinematic feel. While the novel comes to a satisfying conclusion, this is the first book in an anticipated trilogy * Booklist *Debris from a comet drops a fabulously valuable new metal . . . turning it into a bloody, brawling boomtown. Great characters, fine writing, totally engrossing * Stephen King *Wildly entertaining * Publishers Weekly *A propulsive thriller that drops plenty of hints about a bigger picture to be discovered. Fast-paced and gripping, this will make you eager for the next in the Comet Cycle * Sci-Fi Bulletin *Percy's novel is a clever amalgamation of speculative fiction and family drama, of supercharged characters and regular folk, encompassing various viewpoints in a highly cinematic narrative. * Star Tribune *There's mystery and intrigue and a heavy dose of the Midwest in this book, which bills itself as a modern gold rush * Science Friday *The engine of the novel, first of a trilogy, has a lot of moving parts but Percy keeps them all meshing nicely together with sinewy prose and strong characterisation * Financial Times *It's a fast-paced book, full of gritty drama, surprising revelations that don't stray too far into incredulity, complex character dynamics and multiple layers of plot. It was great fun to read and had a real meteoric impact * ParSec *Reads like Stephen King, mixed with Lee Child with a dash of Marvel's Jessica Jones. I couldn't put it down * Concatenation *There's mystery and intrigue and a heavy dose of the Midwest in this book, which bills itself as a modern gold rush * Science Friday *

Book SynopsisKristina M. Lyons presents an ethnography of human-soil relations in which she follows state soil scientists and peasant farmers in Colombia's Putumayo region, showing how their relationship with soil is key to caring for the forest and growing non-illicit crops in the face of violence, militarism, and environmental destruction.Trade Review“Vital Decomposition weaves enthralling ecopoetic writing with the finest ethnographic storytelling. Kristina M. Lyons tells us a compelling story of human-soil relations nurturing insurgent life from the very grounds of eco-social devastation. An indispensable and inspiring read for hopeful decolonial naturecultures.” -- María Puig de la Bellacasa, author of * Matters of Care: Speculative Ethics in More Than Human Worlds *“Making several important interventions in biopolitics, multispecies ethnography, and feminist science studies, Vital Decomposition is a riveting, engaging, timely, and intimate book. It is the best kind of ethnography; it takes us to the small, marginal, and forgotten and examines the world through them, making us feel as though we've been looking at everything the wrong way for a while.” -- Kregg Hetherington, author of * The Government of Beans: Regulating Life in the Age of Monocrops *“Vital Decomposition is a beautifully written book that takes readers deep inside the worlds of Amazonian farmers, soil scientists, and the Amazonian ecosystem itself…. Readers interested in rural Colombia, alternative agricultural practices, and the connections between knowledge, practice, power, and resistance, will appreciate her work.” -- Alex Diamond * NACLA *“Through her research, Lyons weaves poetry and storytelling into a novel analysis of soils. From the perspective of the rural farmers she came to know, Lyons vividly describes the urgent need to ‘think with Amazonian soils’ rather than external systems....” -- Kathleen M. Smits and Jessica M. Smith * Vadose Zone Journal *“Through sensorially powerful ethnographic writing about relations between humans and soil in Colombia, Lyons tells us a story about soil farmers in the Amazon and soil scientists in Bogotá.... Lyons insists on foregrounding the resilience of people and, crucially, of Amazonian soil.” -- María Elena García * Public Books *“This exciting and innovative ethnography centers the often invisible, yet ubiquitous, materiality of soil. [Vital Decomposition] will, I hope, generate a renewed interest in the political ecology of soils and encourage future studies around human-soil relations within the social sciences.” -- Meghan Sullivan * Antipode *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction. Taylor & Francis Inc Essentials of Computational Fluid Dynamics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCovered from the vantage point of a user of a commercial flow package, Essentials of Computational Fluid Dynamics provides the information needed to competently operate a commercial flow solver. This book provides a physical description of fluid flow, outlines the strengths and weaknesses of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), presents the basics of the discretization of the equations, focuses on the understanding of how the flow physics interact with a typical finite-volume discretization, and highlights the approximate nature of CFD. It emphasizes how the physical concepts (mass conservation or momentum balance) are reflected in the CFD solutions while minimizing the required mathematical/numerical background. In addition, it uses cases studies in mechanical/aero and biomedical engineering, includes MATLAB and spreadsheet examples, codes and exercise questions. The book also provides practical demonstrations on core principles and key behaviors and incorporates a wide rangeTrade Review"The book strikes a good balance between practical advice and mathematically oriented explanations. It covers some of the most important real-life CFD topics in depth, such as the issue of turbulence modeling, meshing, or the choice of the boundary conditions."Marek Behr, RWTH Aachen University, Germany"Well written and easy to understand. It describes the basic concepts of accuracy, artificial viscosity and stability in a systematic and logical way. Moreover, the introduction of [artificial] viscosity and flux limiters are rarely found or discussed in the other CFD textbooks. This is an excellent textbook to have for students, lecturers and practicing professionals alike. I would like to have this book on my shelf."Dr. K. Djidjeli, University of Southampton, UK"This relatively short book is intended for the user of commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) packages, as opposed to the developer of such programs. Müeller (Queen Mary Univ. of London, UK) taught CFD to undergraduate students for many years, and he developed the book to accompany a first course on the topic for aerospace or mechanical engineering students. The first eight chapters emphasize the basic physics and the microscopic description of the mathematical equations of fluid mechanics (both laminar and turbulent) and the description and application of finite element mesh modeling of these equations in the vicinity of various geometrical bodies, with appropriate boundary conditions. The sources of errors and the pros and cons of the various turbulent models are also described. Chapter 9 presents several case studies, and chapter 10, the appendix, is a program for a 2-D finite volume application. A short list of exercises follows each chapter. Students will need a solid grounding in basic fluid mechanics and numerical analysis to follow this text."CHOICE, July 2016 Issue"The book strikes a good balance between practical advice and mathematically oriented explanations. I look forward to having this book on my shelf."—Amit Patra, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur "The author provides a mathematically detailed yet accessible presentation of topics in digital control theory. After introducing digital control systems and reviewing the modeling and performance of discrete systems, several chapters are dedicated to different design methods. These methods include discrete equivalent, direct, state-variable feedback, Lyapunov, and optimal. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on application of the theory rather than on theorems and abstract mathematics."—Patricia Mellodge, University of Hartford, Connecticut, USA "This book has an excellent flow of material for teaching design of digital control or computer control of dynamic systems. In particular, and following the well-organized design chapters, the microprocessor/computer implementation hardware and software aspects in chapter 9 are very valuable, well presented, and certainly well appreciated in this book. Chapters 1 through 4 provide clear and concise presentation of prerequisite material/knowledge for a digital control system design course, and could be very well appreciated in a previous senior-level control design course. The design chapters 5 through 8 progress effectively with the right sequence of techniques, starting with design by digital equivalents, followed by transformed domain techniques, and then moving into the time domain state space design including state estimators both full order and reduced order. Using MATLAB® software and simulations for examples and case studies provides students with valuable practice opportunities for the material presented throughout the book. This fits exactly in how I teach my first in a two-graduate-course sequence 'Computer Control of Dynamic Systems' here at California State University, Chico (the second is 'Adaptive Control Systems')." —Dr. Adel A Ghandakly, California State University, Chico, USA "This book is an asset for practicing controls engineers as well as students of advanced control systems courses. This fits exactly in how I teach my first in a two-graduate-course sequence 'Computer Control of Dynamic Systems' here at California State University, Chico (the second is 'Adaptive Control Systems')."—Dr. Adel A Ghandakly, California State University, Chico, USA Table of ContentsDigital Control Introduction and Overview. This book is a delight for the inquisitive mind and opens up a rich field for those who are interested in power distribution resilience, reliability and cybersecurity. I recommend it highly."— Peng Zhang, University of Connecticut, USA"This book addresses interesting and timely topics, which have not been comprehensively treated in a single textbook. It merges traditional mathematical methods for power distribution system analysis and advanced tools for managing geographical dispersed energy resources for solving real case operation problems, which, in my own opinion, represents an enabling paradigm for managing modern power networks."— Alfredo Vaccaro, University of Sannio, Italy "As power distribution networks become increasingly more complex, it is important to start educating the next generation of distribution engineers in both current and future operational challenges in these networks, going past traditional fault analysis and addressing issues resulting from natural disasters as well as security issues exposed by the expanding communication infrastructure. Electric Power: Distribution Emergency Operation provides an accessible and thorough introduction to how we can achieve resilience under the current and future state of distribution network modeling and operation, providing practical and clear examples in MATLAB that are easy for readers to follow. Readers will learn how to translate theory to practice, which is especially important when working with real-world datasets."— Kyri Baker, University of Colorado Boulder, USA"This is a very timely publication and one that the industry has needed for many years. Like Chee-Wooi Ten, I once found myself starting in the industry and not able to find texts that covered essential topics in Distribution Emergency Operations. If I had taken a course based upon this book when I started working in the emerging area of distribution management systems, it would have saved me many hours of frustration. I am particularly excited to see topics such as GIS modeling of distribution systems, outage management, switching management, and fault isolation and restoration get rigorous treatment in a graduate level text.Chee-Wooi Ten’s mixture of academic rigor and pragmatic industry background is combined in this text to create what should be essential coursework for any student interested in a career working in electric distribution. The examples and mini-projects spread throughout the course look excellent and are based upon real world problems. The introduction to the application of graph theory to distribution systems operations formalizes some of the commonly used techniques in modern day distribution management systems. There are practical discussions interspersed throughout the text that explain the key systems involved in Distribution Emergency Operations such as SCADA, AMI, MDMS and GIS provide great background for any student using the text that will help establish a foundation for working with utilities and vendors in the industry."— Terry Nielsen, GridBright, Inc."The astounding pace at which energy infrastructures now experience including energy resource diversification, digitalization, and aging means that critical functioning electrical grids face greater and more frequent risk of intrusion and/or interruption. Moreover, extreme weather events have the potential to affect the performance of the power distribution networks, and the frequency and severity of such events are expected to increase as a consequence of the grid aging and climate change. This book has the best timing and content to address the challenges of resilient electric grid operation and outage management. Authors presented a comprehensive corollary of basic knowledge and practical issues in different chapters of the book."— Reza Arghandeh, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway "With the rising interest in power system resilience, understanding and handling faults, interruptions and equipment failures become of critical importance. At the level of distribution systems, where such emergencies affect directly end-customers’ quality of lives, production processes, transportation and many more, the matter of managing such grid events has evident and measurable practical value in an actual socioeconomic sense. To this end, the book "Distribution Emergency Operation" can only be described as current and of clearly targeted technical content. Building on basic distribution system knowledge, it assists the reader to formulate the most common models for the system and emergency events, as also the corrective control actions and measures in a set-up that it is both practical and carefully engineered for efficiency and effectiveness. Many pieces of relevant code are offered, which, although crucial to these operations and some of them relatively trivial, have never been gathered in one textbook. In this sense, the Authors have put together not only a Power Systems Engineering student’s coursebook, but also a Distribution Network Operator’s operating handbook. Starting with a brief review of current industry practices and applications, the book then defines the basic distribution system representation forms, moves on to describe how a grid is understood as a graph by processing algorithms, links the aforementioned representations to geospatial mapping, before analyzing the methodologies of unbalanced power flow, fault identification and corrective measures in face of fault and interruption events. The involvement of customers and maintenance personnel in handling distribution system emergencies is concluding this work, hinting towards the value of smart metering infrastructure for the modern and future grid development. The proposed mini projects throughout all chapters, although seemingly student-oriented may also serve as practice for professionals who are getting introduced to this specific topic. One should be accustomed to basic power system characteristics, electrical engineering fundamentals, control principles and architectures, and power quality matters, before addressing this read. Although suitable for both students and professionals interested in monitoring, handling and correcting faults at electrical distribution systems, the book is aimed more to the professional practitioner as also the system operator mostly at the design level."— Panayiotis (Panos) Moutis, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA"Electric Power: Distribution Emergency Operation provides timely publication that has been critically needed for industry and education for many years. The authors traverse several disciplines to bring together the most fundamental and useful technical principles for understanding distribution systems and their operations under various scenarios. This is the first time that all this cutting-edge research has been accumulated in a textbook form. The comprehensive materials are organized in a graph theory-based framework and demonstrate in open-source MATLAB codes. It will significantly benefit the engineers and students to grasp the knowledge. It deserves a place in the library of every university and college where electric power systems is taught."—Yunhe Hou, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China"Electric Power: Distribution Emergency Operation constitutes both a text book for students and a definitive reference for researchers and practitioners. It spans foundational material on graph theory and analysis of power distribution networks and faults, to industry practices in architecture and operation of distribution management systems. The book is replete with examples, algorithms and code snippets of a tutorial nature, making it feasible for a student to master the concepts independently. The authors possess considerable combined industry experience, through both practice and consulting, and their advanced knowledge is evident in this up to date, comprehensive, eminently readable and authoritative text."—Joydeep Mitra, Michigan State University, USA "This book offers a unique practical view into the operation of distribution systems. Authors’ extensive practical knowledge is well-presented as a great educational source for every power system engineer and educator."— Javad Mohammadi, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, USA"This book is very useful for field engineers who work on distribution systems as well as for operators who monitor and control the distribution management system at Power System Control Centre. In addition, this textbook can help to enrich students and professionals who want to know more about electric distribution systems related to SCADA, GIS, AMI, MDMS, fault identification, fault isolation, supply restoration and outage management. The authors deliver the subject matters in the simplest possible way while at the same time provide many practical examples and MATLAB scripts to illustrate their messages and concepts. Chee-Wooi wrote this book out of his love for his work. He wanted to share his experience he gathered as an engineer with Power Automation, a joint venture between Siemens and Singapore Power and later as a professor who has taught electric power distribution courses in USA."— H B Gooi, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore"The book is a highly valuable addition to the existing literature on power distribution systems. It covers important, cutting-edge topics on contemporary power distribution. The book can be used as a textbook for high-level graduate courses or a reference for industry practitioners."— Lingfeng Wang, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA"I had the pleasure of meeting Chee-Wooi during his sabbatical at Carnegie Mellon and I have had a chance to have several interesting discussions. I learned a great deal about topology and its complexity in electrical distribution systems and how dynamic they can be. I was surprised to learn how ad-hoc the process of reconfiguration after a fault due to a single event is. I believe there are a large number of opportunities for innovation in distribution systems. Unfortunately, one of the major inhibitors is a lack of knowledge understanding of how distribution systems work. I believe the trend of deploying new sensors across distribution networks will continue and that the transformation to a fully automated is underway. This book is of strategic importance as it is the finest textbook discussing reconfiguration in distribution systems and being at the same time accessible to non-domain experts. This is the book that every new generation of students interested in understanding how to model, analyze and design resilient distribution energy systems should have on their bookshelf. The book is clearly, accessible and incredibly well written. I highly recommend having one in your bookshelf."—Bruno Sinopoli, Carnegie Mellon University, USATable of ContentsPreface. Acknowledgment. Book SynopsisThe first edition of Sound Art Revisited (published as Sound Art: Beyond Music, Between Categories) served as a groundbreaking work toward defining this emerging field, and this fully updated volume significantly expands the story to include current research since the book's initial release. Viewed through a lens of music and art histories rather than philosophical theory, it covers dozens of artists and works not found in any other book on the subject. Locating sound art''s roots across the centuries from spatialized church music to the technological developments of radio, sound recording, and the telephone, the book traces the evolution of sound installations and sound sculpture, the rise of sound art exhibitions and galleries, and finally looks at the critical cross-pollination that marks some of the most important and challenging art with and about sound being produced today.Trade Review[An] important text for anyone involved in any form of sound studies. * The Wire (joint-reviewed with Acoustic Territories) *Alan Licht’s historical approach successfully unpacks the development of sound art and explains its development through a multitude of examples. He ... brings new clarity into the discussion of sound art and its variations, remembering its roots and perhaps more importantly bringing social perspectives to bear in the narrative for scrutinising conceptual, instrumental and performative aspects of this many-faceted art form. * Organised Sound *I am pleased to discover at last an English-language, far-reaching survey of sound art rightly focusing on both theoretical and historical aspects while dealing with challenging categorization and placement issues such as situating sound art with regard to the fields of experimental music, fine art, and even sound studies. Sound art is becoming an increasingly important art form; this volume, a highly revised and expanded version of Licht’s earlier Sound Art: Beyond Music, Between Categories, is long overdue. * Leigh Landy, Director of Music – Technology and Innovation, Institute for Sonic Creativity, De Montfort University, UK *Sound Art Revisited demonstrates in abundance that sound can--and must--be heard throughout all of the arts. Alan Licht’s book is brimming with examples that traverse art, music, and the spaces in between. From seminal figures such as Maryanne Amacher, Max Neuhaus, and Alvin Lucier through to contemporary artists including Christine Sun Kim, Marco Fusinato, and Camille Norment, this book is essential reading for those looking to discover the breadth of practices encompassed by the sonic turn of the arts. * Caleb Kelly, Senior Academic, UNSW Art & Design, Australia *Table of ContentsPreface 1. Book SynopsisListening, Belonging, and Memory puts connected listening at the center of current debates around whose voices might be listened to, who by, and why. Arguing that listening has to be understood in relation to the self, nation, age, witnessing, and memory, it uses examples from digital storytelling, listening projects, and critical media analysis to highlight connections between listening and power. It centers on voices, stories, and silence, how they interweave, and are activated, maneuvered, reconfigured, and denied. It focuses on the small, microengagementsthat crouch within the superstructures of violent border control and the censorious policing of sonic citizenry, identifying cracks in the reshuffling of histories and hierarchies that connected listening affords.Trade ReviewGardner does for sound what Ellis did for vision in Seeing Things (2000), establish listening as witnessing, working through and in this book as thinking with your ears. Immersed as we are in podcasts, music streaming, radio, political speech, text-to-audio machine learning, and voices from the analogue past re-mastered, Gardner’s book is very timely. Listening, Belonging, and Memory addresses the multi-modality of contemporary listening, but also the social justice rationale for proper and careful listening in an age of multiple and conflicting claims to free speech in our slogan-dominated visual culture. * Joanne Garde-Hansen, Professor, Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies, University of Warwick, UK *Abigail Gardner ponders the taken-for-granted act of listening, to understand its contexts and nuanced relationship to how voices and the stories they tell are heard, to belonging, to memory and thus to understanding history, community and indeed one’s own self. This is a richly empirical book that listens to a range of voices and representations including those of war veterans, to migrants and their music, social media memorialization by the Auschwitz Museum of the victims of the Holocaust to everyday narratives recorded by public service broadcasting. Between sound, image, narrative, and silence (and the silenced) it is humanely attuned to and informative about the ways in which listening has been theorized and practiced. Central to this process is a lyrically expressed engagement with method as Gardner is vividly present in this book, her affective and accessible writing inviting us to understand the scholar’s own act of listening as research, reflective about her own position and processes of listening to others in the act of telling. Informed by a committed Cultural Studies tradition, a feminist politics and a sensitivity and respect for ordinary life, Gardner is someone to listen with and closer to in comprehending contemporary memory practice and everyday historiographical work. * Paul Long, Professor in Creative and Cultural Industries and Director, Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre, Monash University, Australia *Poetic in its tone and sensibility and yet carrying strong political and ethical threads, this book beautifully considers listening in the structures of communities and storytelling. Drawing on key work within memory studies, feminism, affect and media studies, the book takes a variety of approaches to carefully map the impact and power of listening. * Kristyn Gorton, Professor of Film and Television, Leeds University, UK *Table of ContentsList of Figures Preface Acknowledgements Introduction: Life as a Listener 1.Connecting Lineages 2. Book SynopsisNoelle Molé Liston''s The Truth Society seeks to understand how a period of Italian political spectacle, which regularly blurred fact and fiction, has shaped how people understand truth, mass-mediated information, scientific knowledge, and forms of governance. Liston scrutinizes Italy''s late twentieth-century political culture, particularly the impact of the former prime minister and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi. By doing so, she examines how this truth-bending political era made science, logic, and rationality into ideas that needed saving. With the prevalence of fake news and our seeming lack of shared reality in the post-truth world, many people struggle to figure out where this new normal came from. Liston argues that seemingly disparate events and practices that have unfolded in Italy are historical reactions to mediatized political forms and particular, cultivated ways of knowing. Book SynopsisBoasting trillion-dollar companies, the digital economy profits from our emotions, our relationships with each other, and the ways we interact with the world. In this timely book, Tim Jordan deftly explores the workings of the digital economy. He discusses the hype and significance surrounding its activities and practices in order to outline important concepts, theory, and policy questions. Through a variety of in-depth case studies, he examines the areas of search, social media, service providers, free economic activity, and digital gaming. Companies discussed include Google, Baidu, Uber, Bitcoin, Wikipedia, Fortnight, and World of Warcraft. Jordan argues that the digital economy is not concerned primarily with selling products, but relies instead on creating communities that can be read by software and algorithms. Profit is then extracted through targeted advertising, subscriptions, misleading 'purchases', and service relations. The Digital Economy is an important reference for students and scholars getting to grips with this enormous contemporary phenomenon.Trade Review"A lively excursion across the varied terrains of the 'digital economy', in which the author argues that it’s not platform technologies that drive our digital searching, working, socialising and gaming, but our deep embeddedness in shared social practices, habits and collective communities."Mark Banks, University of Leicester "Writing in a personal and lively style, Tim Jordan intelligently explores the digital economic practices that constitute search, social media, online gaming and more. Book SynopsisThere are more ways of connecting and communicating via technology than ever before. Yet loneliness is on the rise as we begin to experience an 'attachment crisis' in forming and maintaining intimate relationships. Enter sex robots. Built from the bodies of sex dolls, they are created to help humans – particularly men – cope with our inability to connect. In this bold and trenchant critique, Kathleen Richardson explores important questions surrounding this emerging technology. What does the rise of sex robots tell us about the way that women and girls are imagined? To what extent are porn, prostitution and child sexual exploitation driving the attachment crisis? The author argues that sex robots are produced within a framework of 'property relations' – in which egocentric Man (and his disconnection from Woman) shapes the building of robots and AI. Can this tide of destruction and disconnection be turned, and what would a revolution for the love of humanity look like? Presenting a passionate case for the abolition of practices that cast women as property, Sex Robots: The End of Love is essential reading for students and scholars of robot ethics, anthropology, gender studies, philosophy of technology, sociology and related fields, as well as anyone concerned for the future of human relationships.

Book SynopsisDespite the global movement to tackle plastic pollution, demand for plastics continues to rise. As the world transitions away from fossil fuels, plastics are set to be the biggest driver of oil demand. Single-use plastics – deemed essential in the fight against COVID-19 – have been given a new lease of life. In a world beset with crisis fatigue, what can we do to curb the escalating plastics crisis? In this book, Alice Mah reveals how petrochemical and plastics corporations have fought relentlessly to protect and expand plastics markets in the face of existential threats to business. From denying the toxic health effects of plastics to co-opting circular economy solutions to plastic waste and exploiting the opportunities offered up by the global pandemic, industry has deflected attention from the key problem: plastics production. The consequences of unfettered plastics growth are pernicious and highly unequal. We all have a part to play in reducing plastics consumption but we must tackle the problem at its root: the capitalist imperative for limitless growth.Trade Review‘Hard-hitting and insightful, Plastic Unlimited upends the familiar “personal responsibility” narrative, instead tracing the roots of our global plastics crisis to the voracious multinational corporations producing an endless stream of the stuff.’Beth Gardiner, author of Choked: The Age of Air Pollution and the Fight for a Cleaner Future ‘Alice Mah blows the lid off the many myths and deceptive tactics propagated and employed by an industry desperately seeking to extend our continuing addiction to fossil fuels. This book offers illumination and ammunition for citizens striving for a just and better future.’Von Hernandez, Global coordinator of the Break Free From Plastic movement ‘Timely, engaging, comprehensive. Mah delivers the book I’ve been waiting for – a power-and-geopolitics analysis of the multifaceted plastics crisis, past and present.’Rebecca Altman, writer and environmental sociologist ‘Plastic Unlimited uncovers the driving forces behind the global problem of plastic waste that is damaging ecosystems, undermining public health, and widening inequalities. Alice Mah’s incisive analysis shows that the current plastics predicament is not mainly a problem of weak waste management or poor consumer choices, but instead is driven by powerful corporations that dominate plastics production and use.’Jennifer Clapp, University of Waterloo ‘With breathtaking originality, Alice Mah exposes why plastics are poisoning our planet. Governance is failing. And corporations are out of control. Everyone should rush to read this incisive, fiery analysis. These companies must be held accountable.’Peter Dauvergne, University of British Columbia ‘Tracing plastics back to their petrochemical source, Plastic Unlimited presents an unflinching investigation into corporate responsibility for the plastics crisis. Mah convincingly argues that plastics consumption and climate change are interlinked, and offers strategies for confronting these fossil-fuelled crises through multi-scalar activism.’Jennifer Gabrys, University of Cambridge and author of Citizens of Worlds: Open-Air Toolkits for Environmental Struggle ‘This fantastic book is extremely informative, well written, and a must-read for anyone interested in the deeper roots of the plastics crisis.’Frank Geels, University of Manchester ‘Plastic Unlimited is a vitally important book. It provides a cogent, nuanced, and resounding critique of the fossil fuel industry’s strategy to turn plastics into a saviour of global health, renewable energy technology, but, most of all, the industry’s bottom line. Read this book to understand how the climate emergency and plastics production go hand in hand.’Josh Lepawsky, Memorial University of Newfoundland ‘Plastic Unlimited is an exquisitely useful book and a must-read for anyone interested in plastic pollution. Pulling back the curtain on concepts like lifecycle assessments (LCAs), the circular economy, net zero, and chemical recycling, Alice Mah reveals how each one has specific ingredients that align with the continued growth of plastic production. Academia has lagged behind NGO research and investigative journalism on the plastics industry, but Plastic Unlimited decisively ends that trend. It’s the book I’ve been waiting for!’Max Liboiron, Memorial University of Newfoundland and author of Pollution Is Colonialism ‘Mah’s brilliant analysis reveals how the continuous growth of the petrochemical industry draws upon an imaginary circular economy of plastics that leaves aside “waste colonialism” and environmental injustices.’Joan Martínez-Alier, Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA)“industry has deflected attention from the key problem: plastics production. Book SynopsisThis volume offers an innovative and counter-intuitive study of how and why artificial intelligence-infused weapon systems will affect the strategic stability between nuclear-armed states. Johnson demystifies the hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of nuclear weapons and, more broadly, future warfare. The book highlights the potential, multifaceted intersections of this and other disruptive technology – robotics and autonomy, cyber, drone swarming, big data analytics, and quantum communications – with nuclear stability. Anticipating and preparing for the consequences of the AI-empowered weapon systems are fast becoming a critical task for national security and statecraft. Johnson considers the impact of these trends on deterrence, military escalation, and strategic stability between nuclear-armed states – especially China and the United States. The book draws on a wealth of political and cognitive science, strategic studies, and technical analysis to shed light on the coalescence of developments in AI and other disruptive emerging technologies.Artificial intelligence and the future of warfare sketches a clear picture of the potential impact of AI on the digitized battlefield and broadens our understanding of critical questions for international affairs. AI will profoundly change how wars are fought, and how decision-makers think about nuclear deterrence, escalation management, and strategic stability – but not for the reasons you might think.Trade Review'This superb book is a technical tour de force with a timely approach to emerging challenges to nuclear deterrence. Standage is a writer of this class' Wall Street Journal Beginning around 3,500 BC with the wheel, and moving through the eras of horsepower, trains and bicycles, Tom Standage puts the rise of the car – and the future of urban transport – into a broader historical context. Our society has been shaped by the car in innumerable ways, many of which are so familiar that we no longer notice them. Why does red mean stop and green mean go? Why do some countries drive on the left, and some on the right? How did cars, introduced only a little over a century ago, change the way the world was administered, laid out and policed, along with experiences like eating and shopping? And what might travel in a post-car world look like? As social transformations from ride-sharing to the global pandemic force us to critically re-examine our relationship with personal transportation, A Brief History of Motion is an essential contribution to our understanding of how the modern world came to be.Trade ReviewSpeckled with anecdotes, insights and surprises . . . Book SynopsisFlying in the years between the two world wars was the preserve of the powerful and the wealthy, or so it was until Sir Alan Cobham's 'Flying Circus' began to tour Britain. A former pilot with the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War, Alan Cobham continued to fly, establishing air routes to the Empire countries. He also involved himself in aerial photography and survey work, undertook charter flights and pioneered the 'Air to Air' refuelling technique still in use today. Yet it was his National Aviation Day displays for which Sir Alan Cobham's name is best remembered. Affectionally known as 'Cobham's Flying Circus', his team of up to fourteen aircraft toured the United Kingdom, visiting hundreds of municipal locations, allowing 'ordinary' people to have their first taste of flying. So extensively did Cobham travel with his displays, and so popular did they become, that after war broke out in 1939, some 75 per cent of Britain's young men volunteering for aircrew duties claimed that their first experience of flying had been with 'the Circus'. Sir Alan's name still lives on in the aviation world. The creation of Flight Refuelling Limited in 1934 eventually led to the formation of what is today a major international aerospace and defence organisation-Cobham PLC.

Book SynopsisIt was Tuesday, 15 July 1919 and for the residents of Clifden on Ireland's west coast this was not to be a normal day. Just before 08.40 hours, descending out of the gloom, came a large, twin-engine aeroplane lining up for final approach. One or two on-lookers recognised the danger straight away for this was an area of soft bog, but their attempts to alert the pilot were in vain. The aircraft began to sink and, with a squelch, came to a sudden stop, the tail rearing up in the air. Dazed and with fuel filling the cockpit the two-man crew scrambled out, grabbing what they could. After a flight lasting 16 hours and 28 minutes, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten-Brown had won the race to be the first to fly non-stop across the Atlantic. It was a rough ending for a race that began in April 1913 when Lord Rothermere, aviation philanthropist and owner of the Daily Mail, offered a prize of 10,000, roughly equivalent to $1,000,000 in today's money, to the aviator who shall first cross the Atlantic in an aeroplane in flight from any point in the United States of America, Canada or Newfoundland to any point in Great Britain or Ireland in 72 continuous hours'. Illustrated by many unique photographs this book tells the story of the race, delayed for almost six years by the First World War. Many aircraft would be entered but few would even get off the ground. The teams faced great difficulties in preparing for the challenge of crossing one of the most hostile stretches of ocean on Earth. The authors not only reveal tales of failures and technical difficulties, but of the intense frustration of waiting for the perfect weather-window. And even when finally airborne, Alcock and Brown's flight almost ended in disaster on several occasions as weather conditions almost conspired to cast them down into the grey, cold waters of the Atlantic and almost certain death.

Book SynopsisShoreham airport, founded in 1910, is the oldest airport in the UK and the oldest purpose-built commercial airport in the world. Yet aviation began in Sussex far earlier, with balloonists making landfall at Kingsfold near Horsham in 1785. These early activities attracted much attention, with some 30,000 people gathering at Black Rock in Brighton, as well as on the surrounding hills, to watch the first balloon ascent from the town in July 1821 - using coal gas from the recently opened gas works. That particular balloonist, Charles Green, later became immortalised by Charles Dickens in his _Sketches By Boz_. The military were quick to appreciate the potential benefits of aerial observation and in 1880 balloons were deployed for the first time at the annual Volunteer Review at Brighton. Often wind conditions were not favourable for balloons, which prompted the army to consider employing kites and in June 1903 an international competition was held on the South Downs near Findon to see if kites could lift a man into the air. While this was found to be possible, it proved a terrifying experience for the unfortunate pilots. Before powered flight became a reality, it was gliders which were the first heavier than air machines to take to the skies. In 1902 Mr Jose Weiss began launching unmanned gliders off a ramp at Houghton Hill near Amberley, which flew up to two miles. But soon the internal combustion engine made powered, controlled flight a reality and on 7 November 1908, Alec Ogilvie flew a Wright Brothers biplane along the coast at Camber. By the time war broke out in 1914, the people of Sussex had seen the Brooklands to Brighton air race and the establishment of flying schools at Shoreham and Eastbourne. After the Armistice, aviation started becoming increasingly expensive and increasingly regulated. The halcyon days of swashbuckling amateurs taking to the skies in untested contraptions was drawing to a close.

Book SynopsisThe accomplishments, and initiatives, both social and economic, of Edward Watkin are almost too many to relate. Though generally known for his large-scale railway projects, becoming chairman of nine different British railway companies as well as developing railways in Canada, the USA, Greece, India and the Belgian Congo, he was also responsible for a stream of remarkable projects in the nineteenth century which helped shape people's lives inside and outside Britain. As well as holding senior positions with the London and North Western Railway, the Worcester and Hereford Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, Watkin became president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada. He was also director of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railways, as well as the Athens-Piraeus Railway. Watkin was also the driving force in the creation of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway's 'London Extension' - the Great Central Main Line down to Marylebone in London. This, though, was only one part of his great ambition to have a high-speed rail link from Manchester to Paris and ultimately to India. This, of course, involved the construction of a Channel tunnel. Work on this began on both sides of the Channel in 1880 but had to be abandoned due to the fear of invasion from the Continent. He also purchased an area of Wembley Park, serviced by an extension of his Metropolitan Railway. He developed the park into a pleasure and events destination for urban Londoners, which later became the site of Wembley Stadium. It was also the site of another of Watkin's enterprises, the 'Great Tower in London' which was designed to be higher than the Eiffel Tower but was never completed. Little, though, is known about Watkin's personal life, which is explored here through the surviving diaries he kept. The author, who is the chair of The Watkin Society, which aims to promote Watkin's life and achievements, has delved into the mind of one of the nineteenth century's outstanding individuals.

Book SynopsisWhile large numbers of aeroplanes had been produced In America for the war effort overseas at the Western Front, it was found that that the British, French and Germans were far ahead of them when it came to flight technology, which led to a huge surplus of aeroplanes in the United States. The government's solution to recover some of the money was to sell the surplus stock off for as little as $200 dollars each. With no licence being required to fly a plane, the offer attracted many ex-fighter pilots as well as civilians, who developed a new American pastime known as barnstorming. Part entertainers, part thrill-seekers, the barnstormers made their way across the country as solo acts and in groups called 'Flying Circuses'. The American flier Ormer Locklear wowed the crowds by climbing out of his aeroplane and walk along the wing, and it wasn't long before flying circuses held less appeal for spectators if it didn't have a wing-walking act. Handstands, jumps across planes, and even the odd game of tennis were attempted by barnstormers to attract larger paying audiences. In 1936, the US Government banned wing-walking under 1,500 ft, which doomed aerial stunting, and while a few wing-walking teams operated in the 1970s, it wasn't until barnstormer Vic Norman founded his famous AeroSuperBatics wing-walking team in the early 1980s that the sight of daredevils hand-standing and flying upside down on the wing was seen in Europe. Several teams around the world subsequently formed using aeroplanes such as the Boeing Stearman or the Curtiss 'Jenny' biplanes to wow crowds as a part of regular air displays, and their appeal has continued to rise since the 2000s.

Book SynopsisTechnology affects almost everything we do, and its possibilities can be both exhilarating and daunting. This collection features two radio documentaries exploring Douglas Adams’ vision of the digital future, plus Did Douglas Get it Right?, presented by Mitch Benn.Douglas Adams was a passionate technology enthusiast. His bestselling The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is full of futuristic tech, and in 1990 he predicted something very like the World Wide Web in the BBC2 film Hyperland. So in 1999, he was the natural choice to present Radio 4’s The Internet: The Last 20th Century Battleground. In it, he looked at the explosion in online communication, the evolution of cyberspace, and the risks and opportunities of the new virtual world.A year later, he hosted The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Future, in which he and his guests discussed how music, publishing, broadcasting, and society in general would be transformed in the 21st century. Sadly, this was Adams’ last BBC project: his death in 2001 meant he would never see if his visions came true. However, in 2015, Mitch Benn dipped into the archives for a follow-up programme, Did Douglas Get it Right?, revisiting Adams’ predictions to discover how prescient (or otherwise) they turned out to be...Fascinating, funny and insightful, these three programmes are a wonderful tribute to Douglas Adams, and a treat for fans and futurists alike.Produced by Mark Rickards.

This book examines these two nations in an unusual comparative study of post-authoritarian efforts to decolonize production and trade. The book combines an analysis of political economy and ecocultural heritage to unpack alternative trade formations. It also connects world systems thinking with Indigenous knowledge to articulate a decolonial theory of development and change over the longue durée.
