Nova Science Publishers Inc Troubled Waters: Asian Carp & the Great Lakes
Book SynopsisAsian carp were first introduced into the southern United States in the early 1970s to remove algae from farmed catfish ponds. Flooding in the early 1900s caused many of the catfish farm ponds to overflow, and Asian carp were released into local waterways in the Mississippi River basin. The carp have since migrated northward up the Mississippi River, becoming the most abundant species in some areas of the River. Asian carp are of particular concern to the Great Lakes region because of the potential harm they could cause to the native ecosystem. Asian carp currently present in the Mississippi River physically lack a stomach, so they must continually feed on aquatic vegetation. Native fish species have difficulty competing with Asian carp because of their rapid consumption of resources. This book provides an overview and background of the threat of Asian carp migrating into the Great Lakes and what can be done to avoid this threat.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Nanotechnology Considerations for the EPA & FDA
Book SynopsisNanotechnology, a term encompassing nanoscale science, engineering and technology, is focused on understanding, controlling and exploiting the unique properties of matter than can emerge at scales of 1 to 100 nanometers. A key issue before Congress regarding nanotechnology is how best to protect human health, safety, and the environment as nanoscale materials and products are researched, developed, manufactured, used, and discarded. While the rapidly emerging field of nanotechnology is believed by many to offer significant economic and societal benefits, some research results have raised concerns about the potential adverse environmental, health, and safety implications of nanoscale materials. This book explores the nanotechnology considerations facing the EPA and FDA today.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Nuts: Properties, Consumption & Nutrition
Book SynopsisSeveral epidemiological studies have revealed that people who consume nuts regularly are less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. Clinical trials have found that consumption of various nuts such as almonds and walnuts can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations. Although nuts contain various substances thought to possess cardioprotective effects, scientists believe that their Omega 3 fatty acid profile is at least in part responsible for the hypolipidemic response observed in clinical trials. This book presents current research in the study of nut properties, consumption and nutrition.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Cellulase: Types & Action, Mechanism, & Uses
Book SynopsisCellulase refers to a class of enzymes produced chiefly by fungi, bacteria, and protozoans that catalyse the cellulolysis (or hydrolysis) of cellulose. The enormous potential that cellulases have in biotechnology is the driving force for continuous basic and applied research on these biocatalysts from fungi and bacteria. Cellulases are found in many fields, such as animal feeding, brewery and wine, food, textile and laundry, pulp and paper products. The growing interest toward the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars has generated an additional request for cellulases and their related enzymes. This book presents research in the study of cellulase, including biotechnological applications of microbial cellulases; using agro-industrial by-products as raw material for cellulase production; and the enzyme saccharification of cereal crop residues using dilute alkali pre-treatment.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Desalination: Solutions & Roadmap for an Improved
Book SynopsisThis book explores desalination technologies in the United States, which are increasingly used for municipal and industrial water supplies and reclamation of contaminated supplies. An issue for Congress is the federal role in desalination research, demonstration and full-scale facilities, and regulatory requirements. Constraints on wider adoption include financial, environmental, regulatory issues and concerns. Desalination processes generally treat seawater or brackish water to produce a stream of freshwater, and a separate, saltier stream of water that has to be disposed (often called waste concentrate). Its attractions include creation of a new freshwater source from otherwise unusable waters, and its independence from precipitation, runoff, storage, and recharge. Many states (most notably Florida, California and Texas) and cities are actively researching and investigating the feasibility of large-scale desalination plants for municipal water supplies.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Water Utility Approaches & Responses to Climate
Book SynopsisClimate change poses a variety of challenges for water management, and there is a need to develop methods for understanding and managing risk. While much has been written about the projected impacts of climate change at the continental or regional scale, scientists are quick to caution decision makers about using projections based on global circulation models (GCMs) for local decision making. This uncertainty about specific impacts on local systems has raised concern about the ability of water resource managers to plan for climate and hydrological changes at the local scale, and has spurred recent activity to develop methods for understanding vulnerabilities, including how to downscale climate models. This book examines and documents the steps taken by some of the leading utilities in an attempt to identify the emergent characteristics of water utility climate change vulnerability assessments.
