Illustrated with vivid classroom examples, the book identifies the components of a complete, high-quality writing program. New to This Edition *Chapters on new topics: setting up the writing classroom and writing from informational source material. *New chapters on core topics: narrative writing, handwriting and spelling, planning, assessment, special-needs learners, and English learners. *Increased atteTrade Review"This book thoughtfully answers the 'whys,' 'whats,' and 'how-tos' of effective writing instruction. Graduate students, general and special education teachers, and educational specialists will find the third edition packed with information to design and deliver a comprehensive writing curriculum. The book highlights evidence-based practices in the most important areas of writing instruction and assessment. New chapters on setting up the writing classroom and writing from sources fill in gaps from the second edition. Use this book in graduate literacy classes, school study groups, or individually to boost K-12 writing performance."--Natalie G. Olinghouse, PhD, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Connecticut "This is the best book available on how to teach writing effectively. It draws on current research to provide a comprehensive framework and set of tools for teaching writing. Every chapter in the third edition is filled with up-to-date, useful instructional practices. This text will be invaluable to both the research and practice communities."--Joanna P. Williams, PhD, Professor Emerita of Psychology and Education, Teachers College of Columbia University "Like its predecessors, the third edition is edited and written by scholar-practitioners who bring their vast research knowledge and rich experience working with students and schools to elevate the teaching of writing. Classroom teachers and teacher educators will appreciate the informative, readily applicable descriptions and recommendations offered in each chapter. The chapters on writing from source texts, writing to learn, digital writing tools, and assessment offer practical insights into some of the most complex aspects of K-12 writing instruction.”--Gary A. Troia, PhD, CCC-SLP, Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education, Michigan State University "Proficient writing is a competence that nowadays cannot be underestimated! Unfortunately, the teaching of writing still remains challenging for a majority of teachers throughout the world. This third edition provides necessary guidance and inspiration, and could not be more timely. Expert contributors report on the newest and most strongly supported instructional approaches for teaching writing from kindergarten through the secondary grades. The chapters are substantive, thorough, and research based, but at the same time accessible and practical. This volume is very well worth reading and translating into classroom practice."--Hilde Van Keer, PhD, Department of Educational Studies, Ghent University, Belgium "The third edition of Best Practices in Writing Instruction takes the guesswork out of writing instruction by providing a blueprint of proven strategies that can be used immediately. For instance, the authors include suggestions for teaching students to master each writing genre, which is essential in today’s classrooms. This book gives educators the knowledge to meet the needs of all students, including those who receive special education services. I recommend this book for undergraduate- and graduate-level teacher preparation courses, or as a resource for teachers who are interested in taking their instruction to the next level."--Stephen Ciullo, PhD, Special Education Program, Texas State University -This volume rises above many of its peers as it is not simply a repository, but it acts as a guide for making necessary improvements to the writing instruction U.S. students are receiving. This text represents exhaustive research and practice of writing instruction that improves student performance. Both teachers and researchers alike will find use in this volume. (on the second edition)--Journal of Writing Research, 10/3/2014ƒƒThis edited volume makes a sound argument, based in empirical research, for adopting process approaches to writing instruction and involving learners in such an approach from early on. Furthermore, the contributing authors provide sound rationales and practical advice for focusing student attention and instruction on global concerns of audience, purpose, and communication. New to This Edition *Chapter on culturally responsive teaching, plus more attention to social justice and equity throughout. *Chapter on supporting students Trade Review"At a time when access to literacy should be commonplace, we continue to witness historic inequities. The seventh edition of this foundational text takes readers on a much-needed journey into the literacy lives of children from diverse backgrounds. It shares evidence-based, innovative ideas from multiple experts in the field. I often remind my students that, when it comes to children's learning, 'You must reach them to teach them!' This book provides guidance on how to reach all children--and effectively teach them."--Gwendolyn Thompson McMillon, PhD, Professor of Literacy and Coordinator, Literacy, Culture, and Language Doctoral Program, Oakland University "The revised seventh edition addresses the foundations of what we know about reading comprehension, vocabulary and language development, and writing, across grades and content areas. It offers dedicated attention to the complex, multidimensional demands of literacy skills, with a social justice focus on how best practices can contribute to robust learning for all students. Across the chapters, the book illustrates the centrality of the cultural repertoires that students bring to the classroom, and shows how to recruit and sustain these repertoires in instruction. This volume is both a theoretical and practical guide that can support learning in teacher preparation programs as well as professional learning communities."--Carol D. Lee, PhD, Edwina S. Tarry Professor Emerita, School of Education and Social Policy, Northwestern University "Each edition of this text brings essential knowledge to the field. The seventh edition highlights the complexity of literacy and the need to reconsider traditional views and approaches to teaching literacy at all grade levels. I recommend the text as a whole for graduate-level courses on literacy, while individual chapters can augment undergraduate courses. Book SynopsisBecause content and language learning go hand in hand New content standards integrate content and language in ways prior standards have never done. That’s why it’s so critically important that teachers attend to both content and language development when introducing new subject matter, especially for English learners. Here’s your opportunity to get started tomorrow and every day thereafter: Alison Bailey and Margaret Heritage’s all-new Progressing Students’ Language Day by Day. What’s so utterly ground-breaking about this book is Bailey and Heritage’s Dynamic Language Learning Progression (DLLP) process: research-based tools for obtaining much deeper insight into a student’s language progress, then for identifying the most appropriate instructional steps to elevate language proficiency and content knowledge. Step by step, Bailey and Heritage describe how to Engage with students to advance their development of sophisticated, high-leverage language features for explaining content Use the DLLP approach to formative assessment, then plan your teaching in response to assessment evidence Examine words, sentences, and discourse --the three dimensions of language that are part of the DLLP process for cultivating language development Discover how leadership support and communities of practice (CoPs) can facilitate a successful and sustainable implementation of the DLLP process Listen more closely and uncover new ways to advance content learning with Progressing Students’ Language Day by Day directly by your side. "Alison Bailey and Margaret Heritage open our eyes to the often invisible and context-specific language demands embedded in content learning. Understanding the ubiq¬uitous and highly influential role of language in learning takes time and effort but leads to transformative practice. Progressing Students’ Language Learning Day by Day offers an insightful and concrete framework to begin this transformation." — Paola Uccelli, Professor of Education, Harvard UniversityTrade Review"I’ve worked with ‘mainstream’ content area teachers in my role as a program developer and school change coach for many years, focused on building their skill in working with the English Learners in their classrooms. In the past I’ve relied heavily on promoting the sheltered instruction practices (i.e. SIOP) that we know help make content accessible for students who are learning language. But until the DLLP appeared, we’ve never had a tool that allows mainstream teachers to understand where their students are in terms of their English language development. "I see the need most immediately when teachers tell me standards-based assessments don’t reflect what they know their students know. What they are really saying is their students lack the language skills to provide rigorous, academic explanations of their knowledge. As a former science teacher, I could not be satisfied with watching a student engage in a lab activity. They also needed the scientific language skills to explain what they had done and what their results were. Guessing that they understood the concepts while failing to nourish and build their scientific language skills meant I was only doing half my job. "The DLLP provides the tools to dig in and understand where students are in terms of their specific language development, and gives insight to every teacher on how to support and build those skills. The progressions are clear and intuitive, you don’t need to be a linguistics expert to work with them. In my role as a program developer the DLLP has been a game changer, giving ME a language and a skill I can support and nurture in all the teachers I work with." -- Laureen Avery, Director, Northeast Regional Office"Despite the importance of language development for English Learner (EL) school success, teachers have surprisingly few research-based tools that enable them to observe and guide the language development process as it unfolds. This book provides "Dynamic Language Learning Progressions" that serve as a clear and easy-to-use framework for maximizing language learning and promoting formative progress monitoring in classrooms. WIDA is thrilled to have sponsored this ground-breaking work." -- Tim Boals, Ph.D. WIDA Founder and Director"While teaching academic core content is what teachers focus on, teaching the language of the content to support English learners is a challenge. Alison Bailey, Margaret Heritage and colleagues skillfully weave these two together. They provide strategies for teachers to not only make the content language accessible to students, but also to demonstrate how to assess students’ ability to explain the content being taught through the DLLP. Teachers at Hope Online Learning Academy have begun implementing the DLLP. One teacher commented, "When I started applying more language strategies to whole group instruction, I noticed a difference in my students′ oral language progressions." The DLLP strategies in Progressing Language Day-by-Day will benefit all teachers who work with English learners." -- Carol Prais, English Language Specialist"Progressing Students’ Language Learning Day by Day is a practical guidebook which should be on every teacher’s bookshelf, dog-eared because of its valuable content and easy to implement style. The language development structures are applicable to all grade levels and all subjects areas especially since all of our classrooms are language development classrooms." -- Michele R. Dean, Ed.D. Field Placement Coordinator & Lecturer, California Lutheran University"Formative assessment and analyzing student work can help teachers to better target their instruction of students. The Dynamic Language Learning Progression (DLLP) approach to making use of formative assessments and for planning and implementing instruction across the content areas explored in Bailey and Heritage′s work will help all teachers to better meet the needs of the diverse learners, not only the English learners acquiring English as an additional language in their classrooms." -- Katherine Lobo, ESL Teacher and Teacher Trainer, Newton South High School and Brandies UniversityTable of ContentsForeword by Paola Uccelli Preface Acknowledgments About the Authors About the Contributors PART I. In this essential new resource, teachers will receive Proven, classroom-tested advice delivered in an approachable, teacher-to-teacher style that builds confidence Practical strategies for streamlining instruction in order to focus on key beliefs and literacy-building activities Solutions and suggestions for the most common teacher and student "hang-ups" Numerous recommendations for deeper reading on key topics In addition to teaching English and world history for more than a decade, Stuart is well-known for his blog DaveStuartJr.com, which has over 35,000 visitors each month. He presents professional development workshops and institutes for schools around the United States and offers a number of online learning tools and experiences on his website.Trade ReviewDave Stuart’s These 6 Things is among the most helpful, passionate, practical, and insightful teaching resources I have ever come across. It is brimming with simple, practical—and exceedingly realistic—suggestions and strategies for immediately improving the quality of schooling and student work—starting tomorrow. These 6 Things is an impressive and arrestingly written book by a working teacher. I hope it gets a wide reading. -- Mike SchmokerDave Stuart has an important insight: that a skill kids already know how to do, which is argue, also happens to be a central one in the new standards for college readiness. In Stuart’s wonderful book, These 6 Things, he draws extensively on his own classroom experience to show teachers how to help students use their everyday argument skills to energize the classroom, meet these standards, and achieve success. An extra treat is that Stuart himself writes in a down to earth language refreshingly devoid of Educationese. If you’re a teacher or school administrator interested in turning your students onto argument, Dave Stuart is your man! -- Gerald Graff and Cathy BirkensteinWhat I appreciate most about Dave Stuart’s book These 6 Things: How to Focus Your Teaching on What Matters Most is that he is one of us: a classroom teacher sharing with us what works for him in ways that will work for us in our own classrooms with our own students. When I read about the poster on his class wall that says "[In this class] we are all about becoming better thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and people," I think of the years of hard work I have watched Dave Stuart put into his craft and this book, and how the same statement applies to Dave Stuart himself: He is all about becoming a better thinker, reader, writer, speaker, person—and teacher, and showing us how we can do the same. -- Jim BurkeIf you’re searching for balance as a teacher of literacy, search no further. Dave Stuart Jr. offers a calming voice for a frenzied profession and provides practical classroom strategies that will help you teach adolescents in the rich and meaningful ways they deserve without becoming overwhelmed. This book is packed with ideas that are research-based, student-centered, and most of all, workable. This is a book written for classroom teachers by a classroom teacher, one who understands the struggle of teachers to navigate the demands of standards and content and offers an accessible, sensible formula for classroom success. Dave is a guide, a mentor, an advocate, and a fellow traveler on the road to nurturing and educating students through positive, focused instruction. -- Barry GilmoreIn These 6 Things, Dave Stuart provides a framework and road map that is of value to educators at all stages of their careers, from novices to veterans. He reminds us all to focus in on the things that are most important and to do them well. Much of the book creates opportunities for the kinds of reflection and self-analysis in which most teachers do not have the opportunity to engage. A great tool for new teachers and seasoned teachers alike to find their "Everest" and pursue it. -- David T. ConleyThese 6 Things is a joyful shot in the arm for experienced teachers as well as for novices. Is it possible to consolidate the most important aspects of teaching into one book—complete with relevant, engaging examples that have been tried and proven by teachers in various content areas? I wouldn’t have thought so, but Dave has managed to do it, all while affirming, encouraging, and acting as a "guide on the side" for those who may feel unsure about trying out new activities with their students. You’ll want to carve out some reading time for this book. The journey will yield wonderful rewards for both teachers and students. -- ReLeah Cosset LentTable of ContentsCHAPTER 1. For my part, I especially welcomed the 'Science in context' boxed asides, which gave me useful info nuggets or craft knowledge I didn't know (or perhaps had long forgotten). Often these describe contributions from less widely known scientists of yesteryear, hopefully aiding the incremental improvement in the diversity of people 'doing physics' going forward. Each chapter ends with a selection of resources, including online resources and references, so you can read up on the more academic research angles if you wish. Glossing over an unfortunate typo for a unit given as 'meters/ second/second', a mislabelled I-V characteristic, and a personal pet peeve of calling a 'cell' a 'battery', overall, I have nothing but praise and suggest each physics department acquires this newest edition. Then bring it to the attention of current teaching staff and be proactive in sending newer recruits to the department away with the copy for a spot of light holiday reading before the start of the next term. - School Science Review, Issue 103 -- School Science Review, Issue 103

Strong HL students, as well as all teachers of the course, are likely to be well advantaged by reading and using it, as they will find much to interest them and expand their experience of the course. And the book provides great potential for all students, HL and SL to evolve in their knowledge and understanding of what 'literature' is, how it works, and how it has and does function in human life and history. The way in which the book aligns itself with the chosen aspects of the Subject Guide is impressive. The chapters work to deconstruct the lines of inquiry in the Areas of Exploration.... as a teacher I would be very happy to have a copy of the book in my library of resources, both for ideas and simply to re-read from time to time to spur my own thinking. The panoply of examples is delightful, and there is some very useful critical work. I would also seriously consider recommending or giving the book to any student, IB or not, who is headed to university with plans to study language and literature. The biographies are very helpful and interesting and the QR codes are a lively and apt clarification/enrichment technique. One thing that is very well handled is the reiteration and the interweaving of certain ideas and aspects. I was impressed by how free of copy errors the whole text is.Dr Hannah C. Sage Publications Ltd The SAGE Handbook of Inclusion and Diversity in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis handbook examines policy and practice from around the world with respect to broadly conceived notions of inclusion and diversity within education. It sets out to provide a critical and comprehensive overview of current thinking and debate around aspects such as inclusive education rights, philosophy, context, policy, systems, and practices for a global audience. This makes it an ideal text for researchers and those involved in policy-making, as well as those teaching in classrooms today. Chapters are separated across three key parts: Part I: Conceptualizations and Possibilities of Inclusion and Diversity in Education Part II: Inclusion and Diversity in Educational Practices, Policies, and Systems Part III: Inclusion and Diversity in Global and Local Educational ContextsTrade ReviewThis outstanding collection situates inclusion and diversity in the widest possible contexts: educational, political, ethical and international. This volume is a must-read for all educators hoping to deepen their understanding of the complexities and contradictions of inclusive education. -- Mara Sapon-ShevinThis important new volume is published at a crucial time with regards to the idea of inclusion in education. It appears during a period when the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is calling for international efforts to promote inclusive and equitable quality education, and lifelong learning opportunities for all. This has brought the issue to the forefront of policy developments in many countries. Directly relevant to this global agenda for change, the chapters set out to take stock of scholarship on diversity and inclusion in education in the first two decades of the 21st century, and to look forward to future trends and new directions. In so doing, it draws on a remarkable range of sources from around the world. It also includes chapters that are written from an impressive range of perspectives. I suspect that this handbook will be a major source of stimulation to many of us who are concerned with this crucial agenda. -- Mel Ainscow CBEThis book is far from apolitical, and much more than a handbook. It presents high quality research by a vast array of authors, as well as in-depth critiques of the policies and systems that exist around the world to include, and exclude, individuals and groups of people based on disability, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality. The book carefully draws from a range of expertise. There is much to be gained from reading of practices in other countries and societies, as well as critiquing the way in which we all view diversity and inclusion within our own experiences, paradigms, and frames of reference. -- Harriet AxbeyTable of ContentsIntroduction: Diversity and Inclusion in Education: Inclusive Education Scholarship in the Twenty-First Century - Matthew J. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisBring out daring readers with dynamic small groups! Like many educators in intermediate classrooms across the country, you may be using guided reading principles to teach reading. Whether you’re following targeted reading levels or sticking with your school’s established routines, chances are that guided reading has become synonymous with small group reading for you and your students. But . . . are your students getting the most out of small groups? Are readers of all ability levels experiencing the dynamic learning that can occur in small groups? Do you feel confident that the way you’re grouping kids is based on their wants and needs? Intermediate grade readers don’t need to be guided as much as they need to be engaged—and authors Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan have solutions for doing just that using small groups. What Are You Grouping For? offers the practical tools, classroom examples, and actionable steps essential for starting, sustaining, and mastering the management of small groups. This book explains the five teacher moves that work together to support students’ reading independence through small group learning—kidwatching, pivoting, assessing, curating, and planning—and provides examples to guide you and your students toward success. From must-have beginning-of-the-year strategies to step-by-step advice for implementation, this guide breaks down the processes that support small groups and help create effective instructional reading programs. Based on more than 45 years of combined experience in the classroom, this resource will empower you with tools to ensure that your readers are doing the reading, thinking, and doing—not you. Trade Review"A few years back, after visiting Barry Hoonan’s classroom and experiencing his teaching and his students’ learning, I looked squarely into his reflective eyes and said, ‘Please write a book about what I just saw.’ Educators, welcome to Barry and Julie’s classrooms. Their most important thinking and learning has been poured into this book for us, the virtual visitors to their rooms. They invite us into their joy-filled classrooms, engaging us as their colleagues. We learn alongside them by listening in to their conversations with their students, and kidwatch by joining in their thinking and discovering students’ next steps. We lean into their questions and inquiry as the authors share their reverence for teaching, respect of all students, and above all, how we are doing this together because ‘exquisite things that happen when we are inquisitive together.’" -- Gail Boushey" This book is a fresh reminder that the best teaching is responsive—that kids are much more likely to flourish when they have a teacher whose primary focus is on teaching students rather than on teaching stuff. Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan effectively argue that the one of the best ways to be responsive to your students is through small-group learning experiences, and the five teacher moves they outline in this book—kidwatching, pivoting, assessing, curating, and planning—are moves that should be woven through all K–12 classrooms. I highly recommend this book." -- Kelly Gallagher" In this nimble and invigorating profile of small group settings, Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan offer practical tools and actionable steps that lift small group instruction from a static focus on reading levels to one of setting learning in motion. They outline five critical teacher moves—kidwatching, pivoting, assessing, curating, and planning—that work together to help teachers take a flexible stance while elevating learner responsibility." -- Linda Hoyt" The authors reframe, redefine, and refresh the notion of small group reading instruction. In doing so, they remind us that small group instruction is not only for our ‘struggling’ students, but rather that it’s about leaning in and meeting all students where they are so that we can move them forward. This gem of a book includes strategies for engaging students as readers, encouraging voluminous reading, and finding joy in our reading instruction. It’s a must-read for any elementary teacher of reading." -- Diane Sweeney" Wherever I go, teachers ask me about small group instruction and how to do it. At last, there is book with systems and structures that make small group instruction manageable and meaningful. Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan provide lots of examples to show how to honor and meet the individual needs of students." -- Cris Tovani" These teaching moves are just what I needed to refine my flexibility and problem-solving sophistication in small group instruction. The strategies and examples read as the encouraging voices of the authors over my shoulder, grounded in powerful beliefs, inspiring me to open up my classroom practices in the quest for empowering and joyful student-centered learning. With specific, easily implementable steps to bridge the gap between the formula of best practices in differentiation and the heart and soul of giving each student what they need today for powerful learning, this book is an essential handbook for new and experienced teachers." -- Shelley Hays" For anyone who is looking to lift small group instruction to make it more meaningful, efficient, and joyful, this book is for you. Whether you are someone who is just embarking on utilizing small groups or are looking to breathe new life into this structure, the authors hold your hand and walk you through innovative, practical, and student-centered approaches to reading instruction. Because of this book, there is no longer just one way to hold a guided reading group or a coach book club. The roles a teacher can assume are now dynamic and flexible within small groups and the authors show us how to customize instruction with confidence and insight, adjusting for the readers in front of us. This book is the next generation of small group instruction." -- Patty McGee" Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan’s insistence on JOY at the heart of every instructional decision ensures that a teacher’s focus is not on the structure, but on each child—what they know, what they can do, and what they need next to grow—which is as it should be. One of my favorite lines is, ‘Students’ curiosity and interests are more trustworthy and energizing drivers of grouping decisions than anything else.’ What Are You Grouping For? will energize YOU as you plan worthy work for your students and focus on compelling reasons for them to read, write, and talk. Trust Julie and Barry when they say in the first pages, ‘Together, we’ll figure it out.’ Thanks, Julie and Barry, for being our wing-people. Kids need us to work together and model courageous risk taking in our classrooms. Together is the best way forward." -- Samantha Bennett" It’s pretty rare these days to find a book that fills both our minds and our pockets. But Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan’s What Are You Grouping For? does just that. It meets us exactly where we are as teachers, with all our questions and concerns, about time and organization and materials and strategies, and helps us not only understand what’s possible, but how to enact it too. This is the book to keep in our laps as we teach. Thank you, Barry and Julie!" -- Donna Santman" Barry and Julie have produced a must-read book for teachers of reading. This work is a practical guide to the use of small group instruction as a means of improving reading skills. These two master teachers provide clear, focused techniques from their own practice while making a case for ‘less is more’ relative to taking on too many initiatives in schools. This is thoughtful and provocative." -- Allan Bredy" Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan have hit the ‘sweet spot’ of helping each student become exquisite readers. Through authentic classroom examples, they demonstrate how small groups are the fulcrum between one-to-one instruction and whole group instruction. This book is a gift to educators desiring to create voluminous readers!" -- Michael Nelson" Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan take us on an adventure, redefining small group instruction and broadening our vision of what it can look like when we carefully plan and then step aside and take note of student interactions. With ‘five teacher moves,’ Julie and Barry talk us through meaningful strategies for employing a variety of fluid and flexible small group instruction and work where students ‘think about and appreciate texts.’ Julie and Barry share ideas for getting started, as well as specific examples of small groups that will inspire students all year. This book is for every teacher who strives to create meaningful small group instruction and work in their classrooms." -- Megan Sloan" What Are You Grouping For? is a must-have resource. Julie Wright and Barry Hoonan give practical strategies followed with examples from the classroom for supporting students’ reading independence through small groups. This book incorporates the importance of building relationships and knowing your students to gain maximum impact in the classroom. The book leaves the reader motivated and inspired to get started tomorrow!" -- Amber ReedTable of ContentsForeword by Mary Howard Acknowledgments Preface CHAPTER 1. Every chapter is framed around a "What Would You Do?" scenario, for which she ultimately provides an answer(s) as well as guiding questions to help you think through the issues. Take a look for yourself. We know you’ll agree that And Justice for ELs is without question a one-of-a-kind resource. "And Justice for ELs is an excellent guide for practitioners who seek to provide their English learners with high-quality instruction in all subject areas. Too often such students are relegated an education that marginalizes them academically and fails to develop their native language skills. We can and must do a better job for these students, and in this book Ayanna Cooper shows us how." ~Pedro A. NogueraTrade Review"And Justice for ELs is an excellent guide for practitioners who seek to provide their English learners with high quality instruction in all subject areas. Written in a clear and straight forward manner, this book will be an invaluable resource for educators who seek to make a difference." -- Pedro A. Noguera"School leaders will appreciate that Dr. Cooper′s text takes them beyond legal compliance and moves their school toward real equity, excellence, and meaningful engagement for their English learners. Framed in research, law, and policy, yet rooted in practical actions, this book will provide a clear path to educators who desire to do what’s right and just for their students and families." -- Diane Staehr Fenner"Dr. Ayanna Cooper has made an incredible contribution to the field of education. And Justice For ELs equips educational leaders with the knowledge and confidence to create sustainable change as schools across the United States strive to meet the unique needs of English Learners." -- Sharon H. Porter, Ed.D."Far too often English Language Learners (ELLs) are viewed as a ‘problem’ that drains resources for the mainstream. Dr. Cooper turns this assumption inside out with a thoroughly asset-based perspective: ELLs and their families bring a rich array of language and cultural diversity to classrooms and schools. But clearly, there is work to be done to create the equitable schools in which ELLs can thrive. The book is for school leaders and provides a state-of-the-art working tour in what is involved in advocating for linguistically diverse learners with responsiveness and flexibility. The book is broad enough for a wide range of contexts to benefit from and yet specific enough for leaders to build their own tailor-made professional learning plans. Ayanna Cooper extends a hand of empowerment to school leaders who have often been left out of the conversation. Dr. Cooper brings to her work not only her expertise in TESOL, but her experience as a teacher, teacher educator, and consultant." -- Elfrieda Lepp-Kaethler, Ph.D., ExA.Dip"Every educator is struggling with supporting ELs in a systemic, sustainable way. This book simplifies what’s necessary while advocating for a sense of urgency to review data, assess models, and support EL teachers utilize best practices and ongoing professional learning." -- Dana Salles Trevethan"This book provides campus and district leadership with clearly defined reasons for supporting an equitable campus program for all learners especially EL’s. The scenarios and guiding questions are useful in initiating relevant discussion and provoking thoughtful discussions. Ayanna Cooper writes in a manner that will enhance EL advocacy for leaders regardless of EL experience. " -- Joseph Cerna"A great resource for school leaders and English Language Directors. Book SynopsisCan ghoti really be pronounced fish? Why is o short in glove and love, but long in rove and cove? Why do English words carry such extra baggage as the silent b in doubt, the silent k in knee, and the silent n in autumn? And why do names like Phabulous Phoods and Hi-Ener-G stand out? Addressing these and many other questions about letters and the sounds they make, this engaging volume provides a comprehensive analysis of American English spelling and pronunciation. Venezky illuminates the fully functional system underlying what can at times be a bewildering array of exceptions, focusing on the basic units that serve to signal word form or pronunciation, where these units can occur within words, and how they relate to sound. Also examined are how our current spelling system has developed, efforts to reform it, and ways that spelling rules or patterns are violated in commercial usage. From one of the world's foremost orthographic authorities, the book affords new insight into the teaching of reading and the acquisition and processing of spelling sound relationships.Trade ReviewSpoken language, move over--writing has earned equal presence. This inspiring work makes transparent the hidden structure of written language. Venezky's measured guidance on reading instruction is most timely. Language scholars, teachers, and anyone who appreciates the written word will covet this book. --Dominic W. Massaro, PhD, University of California, Santa CruzThe reading wars have outlasted virtually every other world conflict, mostly because the combatants have only a vague idea of what they are fighting about. Venezky's account of the nature of the English spelling-sound system may not end the wars, but it helps those of us who have to keep the world going--scholars, researchers, teachers, and teacher educators. Teachers and students who immerse themselves in this volume will view the world of spelling and phonics through much clearer lenses. An absolute 'must read.' --Robert Calfee, PhD, Dean, School of Education, University of California, RiversideVenezky has written an immensely interesting and informative book on American English spelling. It covers a broad range of topics, moving gracefully from the historical origins of the 26 letters to the regularities and irregularities of spelling in food and drink words, and ending with the rules of spelling useful for teaching phonics to beginning readers. My favorite line: 'No hand of consistency ever stoked the spelling engine for English.' --Jeanne S. Chall, PhD, Professor of Education, Emeritus, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.Few writers on educational topics can resist the temptation to admonish and advise, especially when the topic is reading. 'What is' tends to take second place to 'what ought to be' in the eyes of such critics. Venezky's thorough and engaging analysis of how spelling patterns relate to spoken language and to reading manages to escape this temptation, providing a basis for clear thinking about the issues. --David R. • The Climate Change Playbook: 22 Systems Thinking

Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Climate Change Playbook: 22 Systems Thinking

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAdvocates and teachers often find it difficult to communicate the complexities of climate change, because the people they are trying to reach hold so many mistaken assumptions. They assume, for example, that when climate change becomes an obvious threat to our everyday lives, there will still be time enough to make changes that will avoid disaster. Yet at that point it will be too late. Or they assume we can use our current paradigms and policy tools to find solutions. Yet the approaches that caused damage in the first place will cause even more damage in the future. Even the increasingly dire warnings from scientists haven’t shaken such assumptions. Is there another way to reach people? The simple, interactive exercises in The Climate Change Playbook can help citizens better understand climate change, diagnose its causes, anticipate its future consequences, and effect constructive change. Adapted from The Systems Thinking Playbook, the twenty-two games are now specifically relevant to climate-change communications and crafted for use by experts, advocates, and educators. Illustrated guidelines walk leaders through setting each game up, facilitating it, and debriefing participants. Users will find games that are suitable for a variety of audiences—whether large and seated, as in a conference room, or smaller and mobile, as in a workshop, seminar, or meeting. Designed by leading thinkers in systems, communications, and sustainability, the games focus on learning by doing.Trade Review“Climate change, sadly, is no game—but these games will help you think more constructively about the scale and shape of the solutions we need!”--Bill McKibben, founder, 350.org “I have lectured and consulted in many dozens of nations, trying to help people understand carrying capacity and its relevance for their communities. Often, I have called upon the teaching tools now shared in The Climate Change Playbook in trainings, with staff, in workshops, and in my own presentations. This book is a treasure trove: It is a practical tool kit for any public policy practitioners who want to engage their counterparts and accelerate learning.”--Mathis Wackernagel, founder and CEO of Global Footprint Network“Many of us experience the problems of climate change as so overwhelming and beyond our control that we don’t know where to start to solve them. This book does the reverse: It makes the issues so palpable that it not only motivates us to do more but also gives us 22 tools we can easily use to mobilize others. If you believe that experience is the best teacher and that we have precious little time to influence changes that have serious long-term consequences for everyone on the planet, this book is an invaluable asset.”--David Peter Stroh, author of Systems Thinking for Social Change: A Practical Guide for Solving Complex Problems, Avoiding Unintended Consequences, and Achieving Lasting Results“Using a game to exemplify a point made in a lecture makes all the difference: The audience, large or small, is eager to participate and remembers the message. The beauty of the games in the Playbook is their simplicity and flexibility. They can be used with school children, university professors, politicians, and business people, and they lend themselves to debriefing that might consist of a just few sentences or an elaborate discussion. I have become a games enthusiast. The Playbook also inspires the creation of variations and even new games to meet specific purposes. We need games to get these vital messages across!”--Helga Kromp-Kolb, head, Center for Global Change and Sustainability, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria“Thousands of government and corporate officials have participated in training programs that I organize in Japan to convey principles related to environment, climate, food, and energy. I have become a fan of the exercises in the Playbook. They are easy to learn and quick to use. They are incredibly effective teaching tools, and they work with participants that do not have English as their first language.”--Riichiro Oda, president and CEO, Change Agent Inc.“Few subjects are more crucial, more discussed, and more poorly understood than climate change. This is a tragedy because there are a few simple, intuitive insights that can be understood by all and could form a consensual foundation that would allow us to focus more clearly on the complex tradeoffs and choices obscured by our misunderstandings. The Climate Change Playbook is a great way to understand and more importantly help others understand these insights.”--Peter M. Senge, senior lecturer, MIT; founding chair, Academy for Systemic Change; author of The Fifth Discipline“One of the major obstacles we face in addressing the climate crisis is the general lack of understanding of the climate system, and complex systems in general. The Climate Change Playbook provides a novel approach to overcoming this barrier through creative and engaging activities that help move the climate crisis from an abstract threat to a clear and present reality that we can and must act upon today.”--Asher Miller, executive director, Post Carbon Institute “The effort to secure a livable planet for future generations just got a little bit easier thanks to The Climate Change Playbook. Whether you are working to educate and empower an audience of students, business leaders, or policy makers, the Playbookwill help you add interactive learning exercises to your teaching and outreach. With clear and detailed instructions, it is a great resource for anyone working to build sound understanding and a collective will to act on climate change.”--Elizabeth Sawin, codirector, Climate Interactive“In my current work as an environmental scholar and my former work heading the UN-affiliated University for Peace and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, my major goal has always been to help others understand the crucial causes and consequences of environmental issues. These authors are masters of using simple exercises to convey complex issues, and this new book compiles many of their best tools."--Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies“How can we learn about tough problems like climate change? The research shows that showing people the research doesn’t work. To learn, people need to interact, experiment, play. The Climate Change Playbook encourages just that through a diverse set of interactive games. Useful with all ages and in groups large and small, these games help us learn critical lessons about difficult topics—and they are a load of fun.”--John Sterman, professor, MIT Sloan School of Management; author of Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World“Climate change, like most of our global problems, is a systemic problem—a web of interconnected issues that is difficult to analyze with conventional linear thinking. This book offers a playful, nonlinear, and largely nonverbal, method for learning how to think systemically—in other words, in terms of relationships, patterns, and context. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience systemic thinking firsthand.”--Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life; coauthor of The Systems View of Life

Book SynopsisDeveloping Creativity in the Classroom applies the most current theory and research on creativity to support the design of teaching and learning. Creative thinking and problem solving are at the heart of learning and application as students prepare for innovation-driven careers. This text debunks myths about creativity and teaching and, instead, illustrates productive conceptions of creative thinking and innovation, including a constructivist learning approach in which creative thinking enhances and strengthens conceptual understanding of the curriculum. Through models of teaching that support creativity and problem solving, this book extends the idea of a creative pedagogy to the four core curriculum domains. Developing Creativity in the Classroom focuses on explanations and examples of how creative thinking and deep learning merge to support engaging learning environments, rising to the challenge of developing 21st-century competencies.

Book SynopsisThe brightest and largest object in the night sky, the Moon is about 1/4 the diameter of Earth and is approximately 240,000 miles (385,000 km) distant. This folding pocket guide provides simplified reference to the Moon and its surface features, its phases (and how these affect gravitation on Earth), eclipses, myths and viewing hints. Detailed maps of the Moon highlight prominent craters, mountains ranges, seas, highlands and manned moon landing sites. Laminated for durability, this indispensable pocket reference is ideal for astronomers of all ages. Made in the USA.Trade Review[August 2017] One of my favorite things to do on clear dark nights when I’m far away from city lights is to gaze at the night sky and imagine worlds far away. Spotting planets, looking for constellations and viewing the Milky Way top my list of things I enjoy best about the darkest skies. Of course, if a UFO happens to make its way across the sky I’m never disappointed. Lots of people use their phones to guide them of where to look but that causes you to have to readjust your eyes to the inky night. Instead I’ve found two laminated, pocket guides that are perfect for spotting your favorite things, except UFOs of course. Helpful Guides For Viewing The Night Sky The Night Sky: A Folding Pocket Guide to the Moon, Stars, Planets & Celestial Events, includes seasonal GLOW-IN-THE-DARK charts to the stars and constellations and introduces the reader to the solar system, our moon, planets (visible with the naked eye), meteor showers and eclipses. This is a perfect guide for the upcoming solar eclipse. I love that it is glow in the dark so that I don’t have to turn on any lights. The Moon: A Folding Pocket Guide to the Moon, Its Surface Features, Phases & Eclipses is a simplified reference guide to the Moon and its surface features, its phases (and how these affect gravitation on Earth), eclipses, myths and viewing hints. Detailed maps of the Moon highlight prominent craters, mountains ranges, seas, highlands and even residuum from the manned Apollo moon landing sites in the 1970s. * Just Short of Crazy blog *
