John Catt Educational Ltd Pupil Book Study: Reading: An evidence-informed

Book Synopsis'Pupil Book Study: Reading' provides evidence-led structures to shine a light on the true impact of a school’s reading provision. Building on the global success of the original Pupil Book Study frameworks, this guide translates these principles into practice to support leaders and teachers to evaluate their reading curriculum. The catch-all term ‘reading’ covers a wide-spanning aspect of schools’ provision, which is acknowledged to be central to pupils’ long-term success and well-being. It is vital that we have robust and meaningful mechanisms in schools to help us understand which aspects of this are working well and what might need further development. This requires us to examine each aspect of our reading provision in turn, through a lens which acknowledges the disciplinary differences between how we might approach teaching different elements of the reading curriculum. 'Pupil Book Study: Reading' provides the tools and structures to achieve this.Coherent approaches and tried and tested structures for talking to pupils about their reading help teachers and leaders to avoid assumptions and get under the skin of their reading provision. Headteachers and senior leaders who have undertaken 'Pupil Book Study: Reading' report that it has lifted the veil on their reading provision, allowing them to see, with clarity, how to refine and develop their offer.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe purpose of Grappling with Graphs: A guide for teachers of 11-16 science is to provide CPD for teachers and enable them to apply research on graphs into their practice. The book is split into two parts: Section A contains a summary of the research, common misconceptions and how to teach both construction and interpretation of graphs. Section B contains student-focused activities, which have been broken down into key skills. (When you purchase the book you will also receive these as a seperate downloadable resource pack!) Grappling with Graphs: A guide for teachers of 11-16 science has been inspired by the popular Getting to Grips with Graphs (1999) by Anne Goldsworthy, Rod Watson and Valerie Wood-Robinson, originally created for children aged 9-13 as part of the AKSIS project. It also builds upon The Language of Mathematics in Science (2016), by putting research and mathematical approaches to graphing into context for science teachers. 'A book I wish I could have read when still teaching in the classroom. I have always “got” graphs myself, so hadn’t realised how difficult students can find them.' Helen Harden (Science Curriculum Specialist) 'Dive into “Grappling with Graphs” – a must-read for science and maths teachers alike. This comprehensive and brilliantly crafted book collaboratively enhances students’ and staff’s graph-drawing and interpretation skills. An invaluable resource for fostering a deeper understanding of graphs, making it essential for any teacher committed to excellence in teaching science and mathematics. A very well thought-out and practical book, full of useful tasks and information.' • Drama and CLIL: A new challenge for the teaching

Peter Lang AG, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Drama and CLIL: A new challenge for the teaching

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisContent and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has transformed the educational scene and brought about a revolution of teaching methods and principles in the bilingual education environment. The major challenge in the implementation of a teacher education curriculum in CLIL is the integration of different teaching approaches to promote content and language mastery. What is certain is that there is no fixed model for CLIL and that for resources to be effective they have to be contextualized and motivating for both teachers and students. The four Cs (Content, Cognition, Communication and Culture) proposed by Coyle (1999) as framework for CLIL implementations find in drama a powerful meeting point to develop communicative skills and beyond. CLIL opens new possibilities for the implementation of drama in its multiple varieties: role-play, simulations, drama activities, educational drama and so on. This book proposes articles on the possibilities of drama as a challenging learning experience from primary to higher education.Table of ContentsContents: Susan Hillyard: Drama and CLIL: The power of connection – Tomás Motos Teruel/Donna Lee Fields: Playback Theatre: Embodying the CLIL methodology – Kemal Sinan Özmen/Cem Balçıkanlı: Theatre Acting in Second Language Teacher Education – Patricia Martín Ortiz: Developing creativity through the Mantle of the Expert technique: A personal experience – Nailya Garipova: Linking theatre to CLIL in Secondary Schools: Bilingual Plays – Raquel Fernández: Readers’ Theatre in the CLIL classroom.

  • Textbook: Research and Writing

Peter Lang AG Textbook: Research and Writing

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe book has a twofold goal: to give an overview of the research in the area of textbook and to supply textbook authors and editors with the concrete suggestions for composing an effective textbook. The conclusions and suggestions are based on an overview of more than 500 sources of literature and many experimental studies of the author. The first part of the book investigates the methods for textbook evaluation: experiments, expert opinions, and textbook analysis. Special attention is given to the analysis of textbook feasibility before printing and to the exact criteria of appropriateness of textbooks for students of different grades and ability levels. Readability formulae and their use via computer are thoroughly discussed. The second part of the book begins with the rules of clear writing: their basis, the examples of application and efficiency. Beside that, some other important topics are examined: the possibilities of motivating students and arousing their interest in textbooks; the characteristics of influential illustrations and their relations to the text; the value forming aspects of textbooks. Textbooks form students' attitudes to other people, form their goals and self-esteem. This way the textbooks influence the fate of our youth. Textbooks deserve keen attention of society.
