Instituto Monsa de Ediciones Off Grid
Book SynopsisInterest in living off the grid, i.e. self-sufficiently without relying on public services such as the municipal water supply, electricity, or local sewage and gas systems, has come on the scene as a greener, cheaper, and more independent way of life. Homes that are off-grid generally allow for a smaller carbon footprint, and a sense of freedom and self-sufficiency. Living Off-Grid sets you free from depending on a company, either using solar panels, wind turbines, a micro water system, or a combination of these technologies. Other times, an Off-Grid system can work as an energy backup or be complemented by the grid when renewable technologies cannot produce all the energy needed. We have gathered different examples of nature-powered homes, which are partially or completely off-grid, to focus on the importance of these homes, which put sustainability first. AUTHOR: Anna Minguet is a creative based in Barcelona.

Instituto Monsa de Ediciones New Shelters: Sustainable Buildings Systems
Book SynopsisDiscover the art and practicalities of sustainable architecture and bio-construction. Living near a green or natural area is a significant benefit to promoting good mental health. Green spaces are thought to lower stress levels, reduce depression and anxiety and improve general well-being. Throughout this book, you will understand how good architecture is considered to be that which blends in perfectly with the surrounding area. Nature can be integrated into architecture indirectly with environmentally friendly elements. For example, there is the option of constructing buildings with vertical gardens that integrate this green habitat into the structure itself, whether it is a façade, roof, etc. and of including natural elements inside the building. When architecture is in tune with the location, it seeks to respect the landscape, limiting the footprint of its intervention, camouflaging its presence or building with local materials. Topics include: . Blending architecture with landscapes . Respecting the land . Producing controlled environments . Details on unfolded axonometric . Inspirations from baroque and mysticism . Incorporating multi-sensual experiences Indeed, today's buildings and cities endeavour to appreciate their surroundings, uniting the environment with architecture. This union sometimes goes beyond admiring the natural beauty surrounding them; the intention is to establish a dialogue and consider the space as just another architectural element. This practice seeks to transform the mechanisms of conventional architecture using materials focused on sustainability. AUTHOR: Anna Minguet is a creative based in Barcelona. She helps with the production department of Monsa Publishing House, preparing layouts and organizing the editorial schedule.

Skira An Atlas of Recycled Landscapes
Book SynopsisAs populations grow, where and how we live is a major concern. Very often architects address the issue of housing, and converting spaces is normally a more satisfactory solution than building from scratch. This volume examines re-purposed sites, reclaimed quarries, former landfills, unused spaces that have been recognized in the last twenty years as potential venues for the development of new social, economic and environmental assets. A selection of “recycled” projects from various parts of the world provides a map of the state of the art internationally, describing what has been achieved to date and opening a window onto possible scenarios for the future. In addition to the many images and references, a brief study illustrates the project methodologies in order to provide fundamental guidelines for planning and design.

Book SynopsisIt is estimated that windows in office buildings are responsible for one third of energy used for their heating and cooling. Designing window shading that balances often contradictory goals of preventing excessive heat gains in hot periods, without compromising beneficial heat gains in cold periods or visual comfort in indoor spaces of modern buildings with highly glazed facades, is an interesting multi-objective optimisation problem that represents an active research topic in the field of building energy and daylighting. Window overhangs are the simplest and most traditional shading devices that are easy to install, highly cost-effective, require low or no maintenance and offer unobstructed views outside. This book provides a review of overhang design methods for optimal thermal and daylighting performance. It starts with a historical overview of methods based on solar positions and shading masks. Next it discusses current research methodology, including shading calculation methods, ways of quantifying thermal and daylighting overhang effectiveness and the use of multi-objective optimisation approaches, together with the case studies that employ them. It further covers methods for designing innovative overhang types such as NURBS outlined overhangs and PV integrated dynamic overhangs. The appendix classifies published overhang case studies according to major climate type and latitude of their locations. As such, the book presents a valuable resource for understanding subtle nuances of interaction between solar radiation, shading devices and indoor comfort. The intended target audience are building energy researchers interested in optimisation of window shading devices.Table of ContentsChapter 1.
