    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHenry Lilley Smith (1788-1859) was born and bred in Southam, Warwickshire. After an apprenticeship to a surgeon-apothecary, he attended Guy’s Hospital (where he was a ‘surgical dresser’ to the distinguished Guy’s surgeon Sir Astley Cooper). After a period of secondment to the Army whilst a student, treating repatriated soldiers following the disastrous battle of Corunna in the Peninsular war, he returned to Guy’s and completed his studies, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1810. He was to spend his entire professional career in Southam; initially appointed Parish Surgeon, in 1818 he established an ‘Infirmary for the Treatment of Diseases of the Eye and Ear’ in the town, where he provided his services entirely without charge, and then, in 1823, opened a Provident (or ‘self-sufficient’) Dispensary – ‘the first in the Kingdom’ – for the medical care of the local working-class population and their families. Despite sustained professional opposition during Henry Lilley Smith’s lifetime, by the end of the century many more Provident Dispensaries for the working-class had been established, ‘self-sufficiency’ being recognised as ‘best practice’; this principle (with additional financial support from the State) was adopted by Lloyd George in his National Insurance Act of 1911. A Prophet in His Own Country attempts to restore the reputation of a Victorian country surgeon, whose remarkable and innovative schemes for the provision of affordable health care for Warwickshire’s working-class families have been almost completely forgotten.

  • General Surgery Outpatient Decisions

Taylor & Francis Ltd General Surgery Outpatient Decisions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFew doctors receive formal training in how to conduct an outpatient consultation or how to compose and dictate an outpatient letter. Trainee surgeons in each new specialty spend their first few weeks in outpatient clinics learning by experience with all the pitfalls this entails. Much work involves seeing patients who have been brought back for review by their predecessors. Problems are caused by inexperience, unfamiliarity, fear of making mistakes, the pressure of patient numbers and lack of training.New doctors will find little help in the standard textbooks on how to follow-up patients. This book provides the necessary background information to enable rational decision making in a concise and economical style. It describes reasonable and safe lines of management suitable for most patients, ideal for when discussion with a senior colleague is not possible. Since the First Edition was published surgical outpatient services have undergone tremendous change. The traditional general surgical clinic has been replaced by specialist clinics where decisions on patient management are taken by multidisciplinary teams. This new edition is multi-authored to take account of the multidisciplinary approach. As well as an overall review of general outpatient issues, every major specialty is covered, with clear notes for each condition covering history, examination, investigations, results, treatment, follow-up and post-operative follow-up. The book can be read before or during clinics, and enables trainees to have an action plan in mind before they walk into a consultation. All surgeons have to be trained to go through the process of dealing with unfamiliar clinical conditions for the first time. Surgeons will use this book as a useful foundation on which to build their own personal knowledge.Trade Review'Fills a gap in most surgical trainees' reading and education...This book provides an outstanding framework for trainees to confidently and capably care for outpatients -- whether in consultation, during the preoperative workup, or during postoperative care...rigorous and authoritative...This is a worthwhile purchase for any physician who wants to improve the experience of caring for outpatient surgical patients.' Book SynopsisMany healthcare professionals that I've encountered refer to a patient's cancer journey; indeed I had an article published describing a patient's journey through biological therapy. This particular case history described my involvement with a medical doctor's experience of renal cell carcinoma and self-administration of immunotherapy. He was very keen to share his experience to educate and inform other health professionals and I now find myself in a similar situation.'I have 'journeyed' from nurse to patient when diagnosed with grade 3-breast cancer. Of course, I've experienced various health problems before this time, but I never spent a night in hospital, unlike members of my family who have experienced serious illness and hospitalisation on several occasions. Consequently I've always regarded myself in the caring role amongst family members and over the years I've used my nursing knowledge and skills to help them deal with both the physical and psychological issues of their various disease processes. However, being diagnosed with breast cancer has now changed me from nurse and carer into a vulnerable ill person with doubts and fears for my future. To restore some sense of purpose while on sick leave and help me to get through each treatment stage, I decided to keep a daily journal of my experience.Trade Review'This book adds to the canon of literature that is the patient perspective of their illness by, unusually, documenting the experience of a nurse-cum-patient. Any text that allows us to explore the lived experience and therefore, we hope, learn something about our patients, our care and ourselves is a boon to the library.' Book SynopsisAs the first in the “Clinical Talk” series, the philosophy of this book is to have a set of question-based sections to help a final-year medical student prepare for exams. These sections include multiple choice questions (MCQs), extended matching questions (EMQs) and case studies. The idea is to have not just a “test yourself” book, but one which students can work through as a learning exercise as well as for revision purposes. For that reason, the answers and explanations provided here are just as important as the questions themselves.Stansby and Goldberg have structured this book such that it complements one of their bestselling textbooks, Surgical Talk: Revision in Surgery.Table of ContentsSurgical Talk; Fluid Balance and Parenteral Nutrition; Pre- and Post-operative Management; Trauma, Shock, Head Injuries and Burns; Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas; Disorders of the Oesophagus, Stomach and Duodenum; Small Intestine and Colon; Rectum and Anus; The Acute Abdomen; Breast Surgery; Lumps in the Head, Neck and Skin; Hernias; Vascular Disease; Urology; Orthopaedics; Ear, Nose and Throat; The Exam.

  • Ethical And Legal Issues In Modern Surgery

Imperial College Press Ethical And Legal Issues In Modern Surgery

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOver the last quarter of a century, the fields of medical ethics and of legal issues related to medical practice have rapidly developed for a number of reasons. Firstly, the provision of healthcare nowadays is based on a complicated partnership between healthcare providers, patients, administrators and organizations responsible for providing finance; this complicated partnership frequently results in clashes of views, opinions, and priorities, which have a major ethical and legal dimension. Secondly, a major event of the 21st century is the development of multicultural societies; healthcare-related decisions thus have to be made on the background of so many different ethnicities, religions, cultures and languages, resulting in a great spectrum of ethical and legal implications. Thirdly, in the modern world, people are more mobile and can easily and cost-effectively seek treatment outside of their country of origin or residence, which raises many ethical and legal issues. Lastly, the development of new medical specialties, modern and advanced treatments for very challenging patients, and the introduction of new technologies in medical practice have dramatically broadened the spectrum of ethical and legal issues related to medical practice. This book will therefore aim to cover in detail general principles and specific issues related to the ethical and legal dimensions of modern surgical practice.Table of ContentsHistory of Medical Ethics; Deontological and Utilitarian Schools of Philosophy; Basic Principles Guiding the Debate of an Ethical Issue; History of the Development of Law in Medical Practice Including the Analysis of Some Hallmark Cases; Regulation of Medical Practice Around the World; Legal Framework Around the World for the Provision of Justice in Issues Related to Medical Practice and Malpractice; Ethical and Legal Issues Specific to Various Areas of Surgical Practice.

Book SynopsisThis textbook is an introduction and guide to undergraduate surgery. It has been a bestseller since its first edition in 2001.The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better students reaching the end of their undergraduate training. Avoiding a book that is too cumbersome, we have tried to make this volume readable and enjoyable, using various techniques to help the reader remember key facts: the text has been deliberately written in a tutorial-like story format as opposed to a set of lists, since this makes it easier to understand and remember. In addition to general surgery, the book contains sections on trauma, orthopaedics, urology and ENT, making it the only comprehensive textbook for medical students wishing to learn top tips in surgery.Subjects that are poorly covered in other main texts — such as fluid balance management and minor surgical procedures — are dealt with in a tutorial fashion in this book, and there is a section on how to problem-solve even in the context of areas unknown to the student. This book is useful for medical students and also for junior doctors during their day-to-day working lives, as well as those coming up to postgraduate exams. Each chapter is written by an authoritative author, alongside the book editors, and they have ensured it remains in the spirit of the bestselling previous editions.Table of ContentsSurgical Talk; Fluid Balance and Nutrition; Pre- and Post-Operative Management; Trauma, Shock, Head Injury, Burns; Hepatobiliary and Pancreas; Upper GI; Small Intestine and Colon; Rectum/Anus; Acute Abdomen; Breast; Lumps in Head, Neck and Skin; Hernias; Vascular Disease; Urology; Orthopaedics; ENT; Mock Questions.

Book SynopsisAs finals approach, medical students often become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge required to pass all subjects in one go, including surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, pharmacology and psychiatry. Clearly the students cannot know each of these subjects in as much detail as they did during their individual attachments and they need to concentrate on important topics rather than minutiae.Whereas existing textbooks cover many topics very well and in great detail, they are lengthy and difficult to read in a short space of time; also some subjects are poorly covered and give no real understanding of practical management and logical thought processes — the exact requirements for passing finals.Surgical Talk: Surgery for Finals is specifically aimed at helping students pass the surgical final examination; it concentrates on subjects and concepts that tend to confuse students. Each chapter is like a tutorial, providing tips on what to say and when to say it and more importantly a logical approach to answering questions. Book SynopsisThe book is the first of its kind to specifically outline the psycho-educational nursing interventions required by the anxious, adult patient undergoing elective, ambulatory surgery. Anxiety management is a considerable issue for the majority of surgical patients and has been recognised as such for many decades. However, no formal nursing intervention currently exists to support patients during this acute phase. This book is one of the first to provide strong evidence for the way in which patients can be assisted in the management of their anxiety. Moreover, it provides future direction for surgical nursing intervention in this new era of minimal invasive surgery where patients undergoing elective procedures increasingly require less physical nursing intervention and spend very little time within the acute hospital setting.Table of Contents21st Century: A Time for Change. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisTo the abdominal surgeon a first successful Whipple procedure is what a first combat mission is to the fighter pilot: a symbol of competence -- the fruits of prolonged training. Not many surgeons managed to incorporate their names into a commonly used eponym; Allen Whipple did and so became immortalised as a household name to surgeons world-wide. Yet, little has been known and written about Whipple, the great American surgeon -- the person and his other interests. This is what this book is about: an edited version of Whipple's previously unpublished memories, which until now -- for more than forty years -- has collected dust. In these pages the retired Whipple describes the journey of his life from the very beginning in Persia, where he was born, to the very end in New Jersey where he died. He provides snap shots of himself, his family and friends, his colleagues, and the changing times in which he lived. The editors have abbreviated the original manuscript by a third and have added footnotes and illustrations. An introduction and 'end page' adds perspective to the memoirs. It has been said "God put the pancreas in the back because he did not want surgeons messing with it". Allen Whipple had the courage to mess with the pancreas and to show us how to mess with it successfully. But what kind of man was he and how did he arrive at his achievements? Find out in this book.

Book SynopsisThis book provides a classic supporting text for teachers and learners in the surgical field. The European Working Time Directive is just one of many factors that will radically change the way doctors work in the future. The aim of this book is to enable all those who teach young surgeons in the clinical setting to think about and prepare for a new and fresh approach to learning. The particular significance of this publication is that it makes a proper distinction between education and training, identifies the reasons why the postgraduate development of doctors as surgeons must involve education rather than merely training, and recognises that the education of surgeons must take place in the clinical setting. The book provides support in five areas: 1. It will enable surgical educators to develop on from the current and traditional teaching/learning relationship. 2. It takes as its basis the importance of professional values. 3. It provides for the first time a thorough educational framework, which will need to be utilised by the learner and educator to establish the educational focus of each trainee placement. 4. For the first time, it supports teachers and learners in developing the processes of reflective practice on a formal basis in surgical education. 5. It takes a new look at the assessment of the trainee in the light of new requirements and the needs of the new approaches to surgical education.Table of ContentsThe significance of clinical practice in the education of a surgeon; Professional values and the traditions of practice in surgery; The importance in postgraduate medicine of educational clues, principles and aims; Nurturing the learner and supporting learning in the clinical settings; Assessment and its role in education for clinical practice: an overview; Understanding and developing clinical thinking; Assessing clinical thinking; Exploring the knowledge base of surgical practice; Assessing technical and operative procedures in the context of teaching and learning surgery; Developing and enriching surgical teaching and learning through practitioner research; Index.

Book SynopsisDavid Gray is a disillusioned surgeon approaching retirement. One night, on the way home from an emergency aneurysm repair, he has a car crash and meets the spirit of the patient he's just operated on -- a man called Alf Angel. Alf, a simple and straightforward character, becomes Gray's guardian and travelling companion on a fantastic journey through time. They visit scenes from Gray's formative years as a young medic, before moving further back in time to learn something of the early trials and tribulations of scientific surgery. Through it all, Gray earnestly seeks the worth of his calling as a doctor and surgeon and ultimately, the nature and meaning of life itself. This is a short novella told in a tongue-in-cheek style using a mixture of amusing whimsy and, at times, profound insight into the minds of men who wield scalpels for a living. Although this short tale is clearly fiction, the historical figures and operations depicted are real, though the characterisation is down to poetic license. Read it and wonder.

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book represents a review of all the subjects with which a junior doctor needs to be effortlessly conversant in their postgraduate surgical exams in order to qualify as a specialist trainee. It covers a full range of subjects, concisely written to aid the revision process and includes basic science, physiology, anatomy, examination techniques, operative surgery and clinical surgery topics. The latter two sections are further subdivided into their relevant surgical speciality for clarity and ease of learning: general surgery, orthopaedics, vascular surgery, ENT surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, and urology. The physiology section is further sub-divided into the following areas: respiratory, cardiac, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and general. The purpose of the book is to pull together the main subject areas to provide a coherent overview of the facts, as well as the principles, which examiners are looking for when deciding whether a doctor has the requisite skills and knowledge to proceed further with their training in surgery as a specialist. It contains essential required information, which would otherwise take months to gather by reading a variety of textbooks, each one specifically aimed at its own specialist topic.

  • Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to

TFM Publishing Ltd Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a succinct set of notes in a question and answer format covering the fundamental principles of surgery. It is aimed at anyone who works in a surgical speciality, not only surgeons, but also nurses, operating department assistants, assistants in surgical practice, trainee surgeons, junior doctors, dentists, podiatrists and medical students of all surgically-oriented disciplines. Many facts and principles are important to those who work in a surgical field, but there is no single unifying book that has covered all the basic, essential material that EVERYONE should know, regardless of their discipline. Equally, many of the existing surgical principle books are written purely for surgeons and, of course, eighty percent of their content is relevant only to surgeons and medical students, and not the wider audience. There is a lot of redundancy, not to mention expense, in reading these books. As well as surgeons, there is a large group of people who work in surgery who need to know the answers to such things, for example: How the sizing system for needles works? How does diathermy work? Why do we wear gloves? What types of suture materials are available? How do wounds heal? This book is equally relevant to postgraduate surgeons, especially with the reorganisation in surgical training becoming ever more prevalent. It is now even more essential to have a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of surgery before specialising into one of today's surgical disciplines.Table of ContentsPre-operative investigations; Management of concomitant medical conditions; Preparation for theatre; Pathways and protocols; Theatre design and function; Anaesthesia; Principles of surgery; Basic surgical techniques; Recovery and immediate postoperative care; Postoperative ward care; Postoperative complications; Late complications, discharge and follow-up; Index.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCreating a differential diagnosis and rationalising a treatment plan is a challenging task for medical students and young doctors at the early stage of their training. This process will also expose deficiencies in core knowledge and problems in applying certain components of their knowledge to varied clinical situations. Guided by experienced teachers, students and doctors in training best learn these skills at the bedside. Patients do not always present with classic textbook descriptions and clinical scenarios can often be varied. During the limited period of clinical training allocated in the surgical curriculum, students may not receive sufficient exposure to an evidence-based approach and decision making in clinical surgery. There is evidence that problem-based learning (PBL) stimulates critical thinking; frequent patient encounters, focused reading, commitment and enthusiasm to acquire the essential core knowledge are all necessary prerequisites in achieving the best outcome from problem-based learning. This book addresses the essentials; common clinical encounters, a clinical decision-making approach, care pathways, the essential core knowledge of clinical anatomy, pathophysiology pertinent to the topic and a concise discussion of management pathways based on the most up-to-date guidelines (e.g. NICE, SIGN, BASO, BSG) are presented in a student friendly style which makes it easier to retain facts. Frequently asked questions at examinations are emphasised during the discussion. This approach will guide and stimulate the reader to recognise, recall and apply the relevant facts to given clinical situations. Also included are self-assessment questions: EMQs (Extended Matching Questions), SBAs (Single Best Answers) and True/False types with relevant explanatory notes. The questions are created to reinforce the concepts and to try to inspire the student's thirst for knowledge. The book is primarily aimed at undergraduates and junior doctors.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisA vital question that concerns many: how to make surgery safer? Is it by tightening the regulations and imposing rigid protocols or by empowering surgeons with the resources to help them make safer decisions? This is the book for those who would choose the second option. What do you think separates smart surgeons from the rest? Why, on the other hand, do surgeons make blunders despite having experience and knowledge? There is only one answer to both questions -- it is decision-making. Decision-making is an art and is at the heart of surgery. It decides between excellent and poor surgical performance. Although a vital part of professional activity, surgeons are not generally aware of how to optimise decision-making skills. Making a good decision is a skill that, like any skill, needs to be developed and this book reveals how surgeons can sharpen these skills. Presented here are the findings from decision science that surgeons, irrespective of speciality or seniority, can apply to everyday practice. Surgeons and pilots have many things in common. The field of aviation has improved passengers' safety over the years and some of the ideas used in the aviation industry can be translated to surgery to achieve better outcomes. Surgeons are required to adapt new strategies throughout their careers. Ideas taken from this book will help to speed up the learning curve. It offers answers to the questions which experienced surgeons may find difficult to explain. Equally, it answers the questions that trainees may even find difficult to ask. You are expected to be cognisant of the knowledge behind making decisions. Nonetheless, no-one tells you how to access this information easily. This book is the key to that vital information.Trade Review"This is a very helpful book, written in a friendly and accessible style. It provides many fascinating examples of the phenomenon which so interests us surgeons. Surgeons of all ages and specialties will find it helpful to know about themselves and how they are challenged." -- Mr Tony Giddings, Past President of the Association of Surgeons of GB & Ireland

Book SynopsisThe enthusiastic feedback received from readers of the international best-seller "Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery" inspired the editors to do a similar book dedicated to surgical complications: practical, non-formal, internationally relevant (in all types of practice and levels of hospitals) -- and definitely not politically correct: what is considered taboo by others is not taboo for us; here we discuss everything! As in the editors' previous book, the use of references is restricted to the absolute minimum, and citing figures and percentages is avoided as much as possible. The chapters in this book are the opinion of experts -- each contributor has a vast personal knowledge and clinical experience in the field he is writing about. This book will help all surgeons (and their patients), avoid the misery of complications, and will provide advice on the management of those that are unavoidable. Book SynopsisAll surgeons want to be better surgeons... They work hard to be respected by their peers, appreciated by their patients, and valued by their communities. Most of the estimated 200 million surgeries performed worldwide every year go as anticipated, with positive patient outcomes. However, the number of surgical complications and preventable medical errors still remains unacceptably high. Why are experienced surgeons still creating so many adverse events? More importantly, what can surgeons do to better address the situation? This book seeks to answer these questions. The book provides pragmatic examples on how good surgeons can grow from being technically brilliant to becoming empathetic and capable of providing safe, compassionate, and more effective patient care. The book follows trauma surgeon Philip Stahel's 20-year journey from his 'rookie years' in internship and residency, to his development as a global patient safety advocate, renowned academician and teacher, and compassionate surgeon. The book touches on why our current patient safety protocols and checklists fail to keep patients safe and how a physician-driven initiative with credible leadership is needed to build a sustainable 'culture of patient safety'. Written for a wide audience and based on the paradigm that "good judgment comes from experience which comes from poor judgment", the book provides in-depth coverage of all the critical and timely components of safe surgical care, relates practical tips for improving the quality of partnerships between surgeons and patients, and offers a practical guide on how to reduce the learning curve to becoming a better surgeon.Trade Review"I applaud Dr Stahel for presenting a rich compilation of his honest and remarkable first-hand experiences and the collective work of doctors and health care leaders to reduce the endemic variation in medical quality that contributes to the #3 cause of death in the U.S. today -- medical care itself. -- Marty Makary MD, Author of The New York Times bestseller, "Unaccountable" "Blood, Sweat & Tears is a great book, one of a kind, and destined to be a medical classic. What makes the book exceptional is the narrative about a difficult human endeavor, often done imperfectly, by humans who have been told they should be perfect. This quintessential paradox is why this book is a practical story about life and will likely be of interest and enjoyment to many outside the realm of medicine." -- Wade Smith MD, Co-founding Editor, "Patient Safety in Surgery" Blood, Sweat & Tears is a unique book - clearly one of a kind, and surprisingly not just of interest to those who work in healthcare. The book has a captivating narrative flow and the medical aspects are very easy to understand for non-clinical/laypersons as well. I will be sending my "baby boomer" parents a copy as it becoming increasingly important for the community to understand the complexity and challenges of our current healthcare system. My take-home point from this book is that we can and we should be involved in our healthcare choices and ask important and pertinent questions. If you're like me, and you're interested in patient safety and eventually receiving high quality medical care if you ever become a patient, if you have a sense of humor, and you would like a different perspective on healthcare, this is the book for you! Nicole Morgan, MHABlood, Sweat & Tears: How to Become a Better Surgeon is a remarkable book that emphasizes empathy and communication, provocatively authored by a surgeon. However, as the reader will soon discover, Philip Stahel is not your ordinary surgeon. I strongly recommend every health care provider read this book. I further recommend this book be mandatory reading annually for every medical student, intern, resident and fellow-in-training, most especially chapters 3 and 4, which epitomize William Osler's advice, "Listen to the patient - he is telling you the diagnosis". In these 20 chapters, the many other insightful quotes alone are worth the purchase price. - Jerome M.Buckley, MD Retired CEO/Chairman, COPIC Companies, Associate Clinical Professor, University of Colorado School of MedicineThe emphasis on empathy is a crucial but neglected part of quality improvement. Why do our patients so frequently not adhere to our instructions? Putting yourself in the patient's position creates an essential surgeon-patient bond that underlies an optimal outcome. Dr. Stahel did not write the golden rule of "love thy neighbor as thyself", but it is clear that he sees this as an essential part of the surgeon-patient partnership. Both surgeon and patient will feel this effect, and it will pay dividends for both parties in the near and distant future. It is an important but disturbing reflection that many medical students lose their empathetic qualities during their clerkship years. There are many reasons that underlie this loss including our role models, the frantic pace of clinical activities, and the lack of clear direction as to the medical student role. Importantly, Dr. Stahel gives us a path to finding our empathy by rediscovering our humanism. Relating to the janitor, the nurse, and other members of the care team as people is an important first step in understanding the common ground that we share with our patients. Letting each member of the surgical team call the professor by his first name clearly tells the staff that all are important and essential. Giving his phone number to his patients shows the trust that Dr. Stahel shares with those who trust him. - Ted Clarke, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon and CEO and Chairman of COPIC, Denver, ColoradoAs a veteran Registered Nurse I feel that this book is a must read for anyone in health care! Dr. Philip Stahel has a very down to Earth writing style and compassionate approach to patient care. Reading this book has reinvigorated my love of nursing and passion for patient care. - Kerry Olson, RN

Book SynopsisEvgeniy Perelygin -- a surgeon who is known to his friends as Perya -- has managed to capture the funny, the amusing, and the ridiculous aspects of what surgeons do and think. Yes, surgeons take their profession very seriously and their patients even more so. But, what is true in any aspect of human life is also true for surgery -- there is always something to laugh about, or even ridicule. And this includes, above all, surgeons themselves! In each of these cartoons lurks the kernel of a basic surgical truth. This truth has been blown up, distorted, and exaggerated, but remains at the heart of the picture. Each picture has a legend describing the situation, which is followed by an aphorism, quote, or comment. This book is essentially for surgical eyes -- they are all cutting edge, and will have the reader in stitches. Readers may also wish to use the images to enliven PowerPoint lectures!
