Kahn & Averill Valentin Berlinsky
Book SynopsisThe Borodin Quartet was to the string quartet what Richter was to the piano, Oistrakh to the violin, Rostropovich to the cello. But the story of this Soviet ensemble - the first to come out of the USSR to give concerts abroad - was inextricably linked to the personality of its founder and cellist for more than six decades, Valentin Berlinsky.Trade Review'On so many levels, this is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read: a history of the legendary Borodin Quartet, not coincidentally packed with musical wisdom enlightening, or at least food for thought, to any musician. Furthermore, it's a memoir of the extraordinary talent among both teachers and students of the Moscow Conservatory in the 1940s (Shostakovich, David Oistrakh and Rostropovich just some of the most famous); and - perhaps most intriguing of all - a candid portrait of the Borodin's long-standing cellist, Valentin Berlinsky. Conjured from a rich mix of sources - Berlinsky's diary, reviews, interviews published for the first time - what emerges from the book is a profound musician fanatically dedicated to the quartet and the repertoire it excelled in. Anyone disappointed by their Christmas haul should not hesitate but treat themselves.' 5 stars Daniel Jaffe, BBC Music Magazine, February 2019; 'The more I read, the more absorbed and touched I was' Steven Isserlis, September 2018Table of ContentsForeword, Author's Preface, Publisher's Note, Family and Childhood, Moscow Central Music School, Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Birth of a Quartet, Beginnings - First Appearances at Moscow Conservatory, Ethics and Ideals - Moscow Philharmonic Quartet, Stabilising the Quartet, Borodin Quartet on the Road, Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich, Like a Phoenix from the Ashes, On Leadership, On Teaching, On Audiences - on Russia, David Oistrakh, On Criticism - Mstislav Rostropovich, On Sviatoslav Richter - on family, In Praise of Examples, Anatoly Zverev, Tempo, Yevgeny Fyodorovich Svetlanov, Finale, Valentin Berlinsky by Family and Friends - Ludmila Berlinskaya - Dmitri Shebaline - Irina Antonova - Rostislav Burkin - Natalia Shakhovskaya, Appendices, Notes on Contributors, Index of Names

The University of Chicago Press Say No to the Devil
Book SynopsisWho was the greatest of all American guitarists? You probably didn't name Gary Davis, but many of his musical contemporaries considered him without peer. Bob Dylan called Davis one of the wizards of modern music. Bob Weir of the Grateful Deadwho took lessons with Davisclaimed his musical ability transcended any common notion of a bluesman. And the folklorist Alan Lomax called him one of the really great geniuses of American instrumental music. But you won't find Davis alongside blues legends Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite almost universal renown among his contemporaries, Davis lives today not so much in his own work but through covers of his songs by Dylan, Jackson Browne, and many others, as well as in the untold number of students whose lives he influenced. The first biography of Davis, Say No to the Devil restores the Rev's remarkable story. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with many of Davis's former students, Ian Zack takes readers through Davis's difficult beginning as the blind son of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South to his decision to become an ordained Baptist minister and his move to New York in the early 1940s, where he scraped out a living singing and preaching on street corners and in storefront churches in Harlem. There, he gained entry into a circle of musicians that included, among many others, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Dave Van Ronk. But in spite of his tremendous musical achievements, Davis never gained broad recognition from an American public that wasn't sure what to make of his trademark blend of gospel, ragtime, street preaching, and the blues. His personal life was also fraught, troubled by struggles with alcohol, women, and deteriorating health. Zack chronicles this remarkable figure in American music, helping us to understand how he taught and influenced a generation of musicians.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Life After Death: The Viola da Gamba in Britain
Book SynopsisNew research throws light on the history of the viol after Purcell, including its revival in the late eighteenth century through Charles Frederick Abel. It is normally thought that the bass viol or viola da gamba dropped out of British musical life in the 1690s, and that Henry Purcell was the last composer to write for it. Peter Holman shows how the gamba changed its role and function in the Restoration period under the influence of foreign music and musicians; how it was played and composed for by the circle of immigrant musicians around Handel; how it was part of the fashion for exotic instruments in themiddle of the century; and how the presence in London of its greatest eighteenth-century exponent, Charles Frederick Abel, sparked off a revival in the 1760s and 70s. Later chapters investigate the gamba's role as an emblem of sensibility among aristocrats, artists and intellectuals, including the Countess of Pembroke, Sir Edward Walpole, Ann Ford, Laurence Sterne, Thomas Gainsborough and Benjamin Franklin, and trace Abel's influence and legacy farinto the nineteenth century. A concluding chapter is concerned with its role in the developing early music movement, culminating with Arnold Dolmetsch's first London concerts with old instruments in 1890. PETER HOLMAN is Professor Emeritus of Historical Musicology at Leeds University, and director of The Parley of Instruments, the choir Psalmody, and the Suffolk Villages Festival.Trade Review[O]utstanding research [...] a valuable reference book that I will no doubt consult again and again. * EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MUSIC *[A] fascinating study that has significantly enlightened the dark ages of a much loved instrument. * MUSIC & LETTERS *[Eine] spannenede und extreme informative Abhandlung. * VIOLA DA GAMBA *This is a book not only for those interested in the viola da gamba but also in musical social history in Britain from the 17th to the end of the 19th century. Oxford University Press Solo Time for Violin Book 3 CD 16 concert pieces
Book SynopsisSolo Time for Violin is a three-volume series of concert pieces for the intermediate to more advanced violinist. Featuring arrangements and original pieces by the authors of the award-winning Fiddle Time series, these graded collections provide sophisticated repertoire from the Baroque to the modern age and introduce styles and techniques for the developing performer.Trade ReviewKathy and David Blackwell need no introduction to string teachers and students; their Fiddle Time series has gained universal appeal ... All 48 pieces are carefully chosen for their educational value as well as musical appeal. Helpful fingering and bowing suggestions together with informative notes, stylish piano accompaniments and a CD with backing tracks as well as full performances provide an admirable follow-up to the Blackwells' considerable achievements. Mary Nemet, Stringendo (AUSTA), October 15 With the introduction of this latest addition to the Fiddle Time family of publications [Solo Time], it would now theoretically be possible to go from complete beginner to ABRSM Grade 8 using only one series of books. That this is the case is a testament to the vast accumulated experience of the Blackwells, which they have so generously shared with their violin teaching colleagues ... Pieces are not arranged in chronological order, which invites a more playful exploration. There are some real gems ... The books owe a certain amount to the Associated Board's selected graded repertoire with their helpful (but not over-editorial) fingering and bowing policies, and notes on context ... these carefully crafted arrangements and editions give pupils access to some interesting and occasionally challenging new repertoire. The Strad, September 2015 I love the new Solo Time books - my students are giving great feedback too. Great pieces to learn in between grades - love 'Sunayama' and its pentatonics. The pieces are pushing my students in a positive way to explore new music and create a thirst to learn new techniques to be able to play these pieces. Thanks for helping us teachers on the front line; these books will definitely be a lovely addition for my students. Sian Phillips, music teacher and performer, June 2015 One piece which especially brought a smile to my face is a fun set of violinistic variations, written by Kathy and David Blackwell, on the theme from the slow movement of Haydn's Surprise Symphony ... The pieces are slightly 'off the beaten track' and the whole presentation is most attractive with again a backing CD provided. You can also go onto the OUP website and listen to complete performances of some half dozen of the pieces. I envisage teachers using these books a lot with their students.
