  • The Will to Improve

Duke University Press The Will to Improve

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOffers an account of development in action. Focusing on experts' attempts to improve landscapes and livelihoods in Indonesia, this title exposes the practices that enable experts to diagnose problems and devise interventions, and the agency of people whose conduct is targeted for reform.Trade Review“The Will to Improve is an exceptionally valuable and well-conceived book. It speaks to some of the most significant theoretical discussions of recent years, effectively linking studies of ‘governmentality,’ debates about neoliberalism, and the increasingly rich literature on the social history of colonialism.”—James Ferguson, author of Global Shadows: Africa in the Neoliberal World Order“Magisterially linking the contradictions of peripheral capitalism with the limits of governmentality, Tania Murray Li offers a view of developmental rule that draws productively on Gramsci and Foucault. She provides perhaps the most brilliant account to date of neoliberal development in action. A tour de force.”—Michael Watts, Director, Center for African Studies, and Class of 1963 Professor of Geography, University of California, Berkeley“Tania Murray Li brilliantly combines the analytic rubrics of Foucault, Marx, and Gramsci to explain ‘the will to improve’ as an essential though poorly understood component of rule in Indonesia. This is not your grandmother’s ethnography: the well-written chapters are packed with the conflicts, contestations, and uncertainties that characterize power relations. Deeply engaged with the processes and practices that shape peoples’ lives, Li’s book should be required reading for scholars interested in how power works and for development practitioners everywhere.”—Nancy Lee Peluso, author of Rich Forests, Poor People: Resource Control and Resistance in Java“Insightful and engaging, this is a fascinating book. Drawing on an impressive array of historical and ethnographic sources, including her own fieldwork, Tania Murray Li offers a brilliant account of ‘expert’ interventions that, since the end of the nineteenth century, have endeavoured to improve the welfare of a number of communities in Sulawesi (Indonesia).” -- Dimitri Tsintjilonis * Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute *Table of ContentsList of Acronyms vii Glossary of Indonesian Terms ix Acknowledgments xi Introduction: The Will to Improve 1 1. • Beyond the City Resource Extraction Urbanism in

University of Texas Press Beyond the City Resource Extraction Urbanism in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDuring the last decade, the South American continent has seen a strong push for transnational integration, initiated by the former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who (with the endorsement of eleven other nations) spearheaded the Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA), a comprehensive energy, transport, and communications network. The most aggressive transcontinental integration project ever planned for South America, the initiative systematically deploys ten east-west infrastructural corridors, enhancing economic development but raising important questions about the polarizing effect of pitting regional needs against the colossal processes of resource extraction. Providing much-needed historical contextualization to IIRSA's agenda, Beyond the City ties together a series of spatial models and offers a survey of regional strategies in five case studies of often overlooked sites built outside the traditional South American urban constructs. Implementing the term resource extraction urbanism, the architect and urbanist Felipe Correa takes us from Brazil's nineteenth-century regional capital city of Belo Horizonte to the experimental, circular, temporary city of Vila Piloto in Três Lagoas. In Chile, he surveys the mining town of María Elena. In Venezuela, he explores petrochemical encampments at Judibana and El Tablazo, as well as new industrial frontiers at Ciudad Guayana. The result is both a cautionary tale, bringing to light a history of societies that were inscribed and administered, and a perceptive examination of the agency of architecture and urban planning in shaping South American lives.Trade Review[Correa's] work describes a series of ex novo urban and regional projects in South America sited and designed to facilitate the mining or harvesting of natural resources. This arresting group of incarnated dreams offers a vivid alternative—or critically supplementary—history of the modern city, embodying an aspirational possibility in which both creating an urban design and realizing it can be imaginative and literal all at once. . . . The author’s evocation of the urban and the territorial is acute and revelatory, a nuanced analysis of the interaction of formal ideals and the aggressive extraction of the earth’s resources. * Architectural Record *Table of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction. Book SynopsisTrade Review“This brief but powerful book is a much-needed—and timely—Guide for the Perplexed Citizen, and it is as wise as it is witty. Capitalism and Democracy is a masterful synthesis of disparate sources, and a highly intelligent assessment and critique of arguments advanced by various economists, political theorists, and politicians. Spragens’s prose is pithy, clear, and a delight to read.” —Terence Ball, co-author of Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal“Capitalism and Democracy is a remarkably evenhanded book, and especially so in these highly contentious days. Spragens joins a sophisticated understanding of political theory to economic analysis and provides a fuller account of what is at stake in debates about the extent to which the market should be ‘free’ and the government should ‘interfere’ with it than one usually finds in writings on these matters. I read it practically straight through and found it almost as enjoyable as reading a good novel.” —Richard Dagger, author of Playing Fair"The free-market process is ultimately based on the reality of who we are as human beings. The free economy is not an ‘instrument’ but a ‘process’ which allows the ‘flourishing’ of the human person. . . . Spragens’s study is a most worthwhile contribution in this ongoing discussion." —VoegelinViewTable of ContentsForeword Introduction 1. The Political Economy Debate: What Brings Prosperity? 2. • The Insect Societies

Harvard University Press The Insect Societies

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisA major work of environmental and behavioral biology, this book reinterprets the classification, evolution, anatomy, physiology, and behavior of the higher social insects—ants, social wasps and bees, and termites—through the concepts of modern biology, from biochemistry to evolutionary theory and population ecology.Trade ReviewIf only because of the rarity of the event and the stature of the author…The Insect Societies must be considered a work of major importance. It is certain to influence the focus of research as well as the content of public information on the social insects for years to come…For anyone, layman or specialists, interested in a single, concise, lucid, and authoritative account of the most significant facts and theories about insect societies, The Insect Societies is the best available and will be for many years. -- Mary Jane West Eberhard * Natural History *Because ants, wasps, bees, and termites are of importance to man, because of their ecological domination of the land, and because their activities remind man of his own, this encyclopedic work will attract the general reader, students, and biologists as well as entomologists…This comprehensive work must be recognized as an outstanding contribution to biological literature. * Library Journal *The Insect Societies gives an extraordinarily complete and up-to-date account of the natural history of social insects with their great proliferation of genera, species, and behavioral types…In these fields modern genetics, selection theory, and biomathematics are being developed to explain the evolution of insect societies and their diversity both in size and in longevity. This is one of the growing points in the study of social insects and an undertaking to which Wilson is making important contributions. -- O. W. Richards * Science *In comprehensiveness of scope and modernity of outlook The Insect Societies can truly be said to be unique. For many years to come it will surely constitute a benchmark for all those, professional and amateur alike, for whom the social insects offer one of the most compelling and fascinating pageants in all the world of nature. The book is likely to become a collector's item. -- Caryl F. Haskins * New York Times Book Review *The book is well illustrated, and written in a clear direct style, with such specialist technical terms as Wilson feels obliged to uses explained in a glossary; evidently he is anxious to reach a wider audience than that provided by professional entomologists--as indeed the book deserves to do…This handsome book will undoubtedly be widely read and influential. -- R. A. Crowson * Nature *No book on biology in the past 20 years has been as satisfying as this treatise on ants, bees, wasps and termites…It is written with clarity and verve, but what distinguishes it particularly is its catholic mastery of all of biology, from paleontology to formal genetics, from ethology to biochemistry. Nothing less can be an adequate basis for the study of our social colleagues on this earth, and nothing less has its courageous and energetic author settled for. Biology is a whole science, and here it is wholly seen…It is so honest and yet so rich that it attracts and holds by the scent of understanding. * Scientific American *Table of Contents* Acknowledgment *1. With exceptional erudition, penetrating intelligence, and sparkling prose, Adam Teller depicts this horrendous moment in all of its complexity: as a moment of death but also of new life; disruption and connection; and senseless violence but also precious moments of human sympathy. Based on research in dozens of archives and almost as many languages, Rescue the Surviving Souls is a tour de force of historical writing: it is at once compulsively readable and scholarly."---Judges' Remarks, National Jewish Book Award"Overall, Teller’s sweeping and comprehensive treatment of the seventeenth century is an important and ground-breaking contribution to the field of Jewish history."---Rebecca Wartell, Mediterranean Historical Review"Rescuing the Surviving Souls is a remarkable achievement, and should be read widely not only by scholars of early modern Jewry, but by all students of the early modern world as well as those interested in refugees regardless of time or place. Book SynopsisTrade Review"Roper’s book proves that a rigorously scholarly work can also be a pleasure to read."---Dan Hitchens, The Times"Roper questions Luther’s character and legacy with the same anti-authoritarianismthat animated her subject, combining acuity with wit and levity, just as Luther did— though with fewer obscenities."---Suzannah Lipscomb, A Financial Times Best Book Of The Week"Provocative and thought-provoking, Living I Was Your Plague is an important contribution to our understanding of the life and afterlife of one of history’s most complex figures, and a lively testament to the striking originality of Roper’s scholarship."---Alexandra Walsham, Times Literary Supplement"Through its thematic approach this collection says much that could not be said in the inevitably heroic format of the biography. It provides insights that will shape the reader’s experience of every future encounter with Luther. It integrates visual and material culture brilliantly throughout, arguing that from Cranach’s early portraits to Playmobil’s bestselling Luther figurine, images must be central to our interpretation of the Reformation. And it offers a critical reflection – wonderfully personal in places – on the experience of writing biography and living as a historian through a period of intense public interest. At a moment at which tensions over race and heritage have coalesced around public representations of historical men this collection provides a moral compass for those seeking to write the histories of heroes with dark sides."---Bridget Heal, History Today"After an outpouring of books about Luther at the time of the quicentenary, one could have been forgiven for thinking. . . that there wasn't much of interest left to be said. In her ambition to tackle together the life and the legend, and her avowed determination to appraise Luther in a thorougly Lutheran spirit of anti-authoritarianism, Lyndal Roper has triumphantly demonstrated the contrary."---Peter Marshall, The Tablet"[Living I Was Your Plague] may unsettle in ways that open diligent readers to new vision. The book accomplishes something that few of the books about Luther occasioned by the 2017 anniversary accomplished: it sees Luther with fresh eyes and shows us why we need to wrestle with his legacy."---Vincent Evener, Christian Century"Roper questions Luther’s character and legacy with the same anti-authoritarianism that animated her subject, combining acuity with wit and levity, just as Luther did — though with fewer obscenities. But it is those obscenities that Roper, Regius Professor of History at the University of Oxford, has in mind, as she grapples with how to understand an intellectual in the context of their whole self, conscious and unconscious, warts and all."---Suzannah Lipscomb, Financial Times"Intelligent and absorbing"---Sean Sheehan, The Prisma

Trade ReviewA superb, up-to-date feminist analysis of the borderline condition....Characterized by stereotypically feminine qualities, such as poor interpersonal boundaries and an unstable sense of self, borderline diagnosis has been questioned by many as a veiled replacement of the hysteria diagnosis....Wirth-Cauchon includes narratives from women exhibiting the theoretical underpinnings of the borderline diagnosis....The author is rigorous in her analysis, and mainstream academics and diagnosticians should take note lest they create yet another label that disregards the contradictory and conflicting expectations experienced by so many women. Includes an excellent bibliography and a wealth of good reference. Book SynopsisThe Clay Sanskrit Library, co-published by NYU Press and the JJC Foundation, has been created to introduce classical Sanskrit literature to a wide international readership. This literature combines great beauty, enormous variety and more than three thousand years of continuous history and development.Trade Review"Here are stories and poems of great complexity and seeming simplicity, crafted with joy in the art of storytelling and delight in the nuance and patterning of words." Times Literary Supplement "A handsome new series of dual-language Sanskrit texts... No effort has been spared to make these little volumes as attractive as possible to readers." Times Higher Education Supplement "...a whole library, a whole literature, hot off the press, is now at last open and available to readers of English. It is more than two hundred years since Goethe remarked, after reading some very inadequate translations, that all earthly beauty is condensed into Kalidasa's Sakuntala. Was he exaggerating? Now you can make up your own mind." --David Shulman, The New Republic "Small, elegant books, beautifully printed, sparsely annotated, and bilingual... This arrangement naturally delights students of Sanskrit, who may dispense, at least temporarily, with their dictionaries and grammar books; but you do not have to know Sanskrit to enjoy reading these volumes." The New Republic "The appeal of these books, the reason they stuck around long enough to become classics in the first place, is often their simplicity, the apparently effortless way so many of them distil complex truths into parables that resonate for people and in places distant from the works' authors or origins." Harper's Magazine "Magnificent. Built by the best Sanskrit translators of our time, the CSL launched new translators who brought works that had languished in obscurity into modern English." World Literature Today "These translations promise to revolutionize our sense of the Indian past: it is the greatest publishing project of recent years." Pankaj Mishra "A marvellous new venture. Modelled on the Loeb Library of Greek and Latin classics, the Clay Sanskrit Library presents masterpieces of Sanskrit poetry, drama, and prose in a dual language format ... one of the most admirable publishing projects now afoot." New Criterion "Geek-chic."BookForum "You needn't be a scholar to enjoy this wondrous poem [Buddhacarita], which continually marvels us with its grand gestures: moments of divine intervention, political assassination plots, infernal visions and hellish battles with chimerical fiends. Recent pop culture has tackled the Buddha, from fantastic depictions (see Osamu Tezuka's eight-volume manga interpretation of his life) to the absurd (one thinks of a bronzed Keanu Reeves strutting as Siddhartha in Little Buddha). Yet you would be hard pressed to find anything that ranks close to the Buddhacarita, which still mesmerizes with its vividness and sheer audacity." Time Magazine "Very few collections of Sanskrit deep enough for research are housed anywhere in North America. Now, twenty-five hundred years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, the ambitious Clay Sanskrit Library may remedy this state of affairs...a good place to experience some deeply human poetry." Tricycle magazine "The texts reflect the vibrant literary culture of the classical Sanskrit period, taking readers on an adventurous journey through the palaces and gardens of ancient India."East-West TimesTable of ContentsSet contains ISBN'S 9780814719961, 9780814707296, 9780814787021, 9780814716618, 9780814782958, 9780814767337, 9780814788158, 9780814788141

Book SynopsisExamines representations of Arabs, Islam and the Near East in nineteenth-century American cultureTrade ReviewAmerican Arabesque succeeds on many levels, not the least of which is its forging of a method of transnational scholarship. Berman places importance on translation, not only in terms of linguistics but also in terms of cultural forms. The result is a nuanced read of densely overlapping cultural forms and ideas...This is an important scholarly intervention that is sure to push forward transnational scholarship. * Journal of American Studies *Berman's work opens up extended vistas for consideration, and the central accomplishment of the book is immense: by reading Arabic-language texts from North Africa contrapuntally in relation to English-language texts, Berman points toward the possibility of reading nineteenth-century American literature through frames that are far more genuinely planetary and cosmopolitan that has yet been achieved. Berman's study makes an important, indeed vital, contribution to the field of studies of American Orientalism and of Orientalism in Poe's work specifically. * Poe Studies *[T]his book will prove useful to both historians and literary scholars....always stimulating and rewarding...it should inspire many new avenues of research. -- Anna Suranyi * New England Quarterly *Berman's American Arabesquemakes an original contribution to the fields of American, Arab American, and Middle East studies through a combination of a novel comparative angle, bold theoretical argument, keenly perceptive and nuanced textual analyses, and an elegant, fluid style. This book will no doubt become required reading for scholars in this field. -- Wail S. Hassan * Symploke *American Arabesque is daringly ambitious. As a work of scholarship, it ventures an extraordinary range of reference, involving old and new works in English and Arabic. As a challenge to think differently about the United States in a larger world, it ventures to name its perspective & dirty cosmopolitanism. It makes good on both these risks." -- Jonathan Arac, author of Impure WorldsBerman evokes the figure of the arabesque as a mediation between what is & Arab and its representation in the U.S. context, thereby turning the duality of Us vs. Them into a fluid field of interplay and modulation of representations that perform discrete ideological functions for different agents and under different circumstances. Yet Berman is not content to read American literature with a focus on the arabesque; he employs a theoretical perspective that blends classical Arabic hermeneutics and contemporary literary and cultural theory. This is an original contribution to American and Arab American studies that displays genuine intellectual imagination. -- Wail S. Book SynopsisRather than teaching children to obey authority, to conform, or to seek redemption through prayer, twentieth-century leftists encouraged children to question the authority of those in power. This book collects forty-three stories, poems, comic strips, primers, and other texts for children that embody this radical tradition.Trade Review"I have a soft spot for beautiful and thoughtful children's books, especially children's literature with timeless philosophy for grown-ups...Tales for Little Rebels made me think of the subtle ideological messages in some of my favorite recent children's books." -- Maria Popova * The Atlantic *"Tales for Little Rebels anthologizes 75 years of radical childrens literature. Its a rousing, relevant chronicle of teaching kids about social and environmental justice, civil rights, and their power to challenge the status quo." -- Julie Hanus * The Utne Reader *"Children's literature with timeless philosophy for grown-ups." -- Maria Popova * Brainpicking *"A rarely discussed aspect of childrens literaturethe politics behind, or part, of a books creationhas been thoroughly explored in this intelligent, enlightening, and fascinating account. Even those who have spent a lifetime studying childrens books will find incredible surprises, such as Walter Cranes & Happy Valley or information about Lynd Wards political activism. But the book is not merely a history; it is a very timely exploration of the appropriate inclusion of political/social content in childrens books, and it provides examples of titles that succeed as literature and those in which politics overwhelm the story. Every academic and public library should own a copy; every childrens literature professor needs to read it; all childrens book enthusiasts will want to share it with their colleagues." -- Anita Silvey, author of 100 Best Books for Children"A remarkable book. . . . The prose excerpts are fascinating; the illustrations are perfectly fabulous and, very often, really funny. . . . There is so much here, and something unique for everyone except sourpuss defenders of the status quo." -- Paul Buhle * Monthly Review *"For those who want to understand a time when radicals could think of themselves as having a central place in U.S. culture, right down to science instruction; for those who cherish beautiful, playful, wistful and stark illustrations; for those who can use reminders, after horrors and defeats, of the bedrock ethical bases of socialism, for those who want to know where a Dr. Seuss came from, and what he was part of, and for those who still think the world could use more little and grown-up rebels, this is the book." -- David Roediger,University of Illinois, and author of How Race Survived U.S. History"Mickenberg and Nel have switched on the power of radical childrens literature to maximum wattage, revealing a rich, compelling tradition that deserves our attention. Creating an archive that will have authority and endurance, they have recovered stories encouraging children to engage with social, economic, and environment challenges and to become agents of change." -- Maria Tatar,Harvard University, and author of The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen"Sure, this is an important work. But it aint stuffy. Mickenberg and Nel have created a book that fascinates and entertains. A must for any student of history or childrens books." -- Lane Smith, author of John, Paul, George & Ben and illustrator of The Stinky Cheese Man"While is clearly intended as a textbook for a college course on this subject, the variety within this anthology should suggest it is well worth extended investigation. We may even begin questioning the degree of propaganda that surrounds our daily life as adults and realize such story-telling is no longer limited only to the realm of childhood." * American Communist History *"Tales for Little Rebels is indeed a timely collection and one that serves as an excellent touchstone for future research into a & usable past for contemporary academics." * Children's Literature Association Quarterly *"Mickenberg and Nel fill a gap in scholarship on childrens literature." * Choice *"Mickenberg and Nel have done a real service in reclaiming these selections of children’s literature, some by such well known childrens book authors as Julius Lester and Dr. Seuss but many from writers whose reputations were made and works published on the barricades of the Left." * The Horn Book Inc. *"By introducing kids (and their parents) to a wide range of forgotten and overlooked texts addressing progressive themes, and by provoking a closer look at what the books we already own imply, Mickenberg and Nel have done parents and kids alike a truly important service." * The Texas Observer *"Financial behemoths have been nationalized. There are even rumors of universal health care. Socialism is on the march! As we leave capitalism behind, the traditionalists among you may be wondering: Will they come for our children? Too late. As Mickenberg and Nel document in Tales for Little Rebels, Marxist principles have been dripping steadily into the minds of American youth for more than a century. . . . As America backs cautiously away from its laissez-faire disasters and reluctantly into an unfamiliar, communal style of politics, some of us may find ourselves wishing we had been scared with such rhymes in kindergarten instead of having had to live through them as adults." * The New York Times Book Review *"Consistently fascinating. . . . Boast[s] authors as skilled as Carl Sandburg, Munro (Ferdinand the Bull) Leaf, Dr. Seuss, Eve Merriam and Langston Hughes." * Toronto Globe and Mail *"A ribald, witty, sometimes fun, sometimes thoughtful examination of a wide swath of too little-known literature." * www.schoollibrary.com *"The collection focuses on a fascinating combination of ideology and creativity introducing its readers to a multiplicity of ways didactic messages were presented to a childrens audience. This anthology is important for scholars of Russian literature because it shows the inherent elements of childrens literature that permits its use (and abuse) for ideological purposes." * Working Group for Study of Russian Children's Literature and Culture blog *"Julia Mickenburg and Philip Nel have edited a collection of childrens literature that represents the left-wing-oriented, oppositional tradition in childrens literature in the United States. And a lovely collection it is!... Mickenburg and Nel have done all of us parents, activists, writersa service by providing examples of what has been done. The task remains to carry this forward." * Science & Society *"This book reveals a unique, vibrant, imaginative, and energetic left-wing tradition of writing for young people. It is an invaluable resource for progressive educators and hopefully will inspire teachers to write and even publish their own children’s books dealing with sensitive political and social issues." * Rethinking Schools Online *"As an educator, I share the belief that all of the authors in this collection must also have held as truth: that children are indeed the future, and to bring about social change, one needs to begin by changing the hearts and minds of children... I believe lovers of social/political history and inquiring minds in general, [sic] would find this collection appealing." * Style Substance Soul *"Readers looking for the animals, sprites, and other characters common to childrens literature will find them, with a twist." * The Chronicle Review *
