  • Missing the Tide Global Governments in Retreat

McGill-Queen's University Press Missing the Tide Global Governments in Retreat

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow the global optimism that characterized the 1990s evolved into pessimism and chaos.Trade Review" A stimulating testimony by one of the most important actors on the global stage at the turn of the millennium. Is it, as Johnson says, a ' true but tragic story?' I am not as pessimistic, but only because I expect his lucid account will help redress a very challenging and demanding global situation." Jean-Claude Trichet, former president of the European Central Bank " Read it and weep! Don Johnston has written what he rightly calls the ' true but tragic story' of how the United States and its allies squandered their chance to build a better world in the 1990s. Published as Donald Trump takes office, this compelling memoir by the former secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will be painful reading. It' s a story of bungled opportunities to draw Russia, Turkey, and other problem nations of the twenty-first century closer to the West. Most of all, Missing the Tide is the sad story of how the United States lost its luster as a true superpower, ' magnanimous and fair.' All the wisdom that Johnston accumulated in his ten years of running the OECD is shared in this book to help leaders catch the tide if it ever returns." • Inward Vipassana Meditation and the Embodiment of

The University of Chicago Press Inward Vipassana Meditation and the Embodiment of

Book SynopsisTrade Review"This striking ethnography sticks in one's mind: rooms full of silent meditators coordinating their body rhythms on a tacit channel, observing sensations over every inch of their bodies, and washing away pains not by seeking their causes but by detached attention. Pagis depicts meditation in a secular age, not as religion but as bodies among bodies giving each other space to repair the inroads of too much social self."--Randall Collins, University of Pennsylvania "Pagis' beautifully written, brilliantly argued ethnography of meditation makes three major contributions: it shows how some of our most private experiences are socially enabled; it demonstrates how our selves are not only linguistically but sensuously mediated; and it reveals how attention is not merely a faculty but a practice. All three have profound consequences for understanding the sociality of human beings."--Andreas Glaeser, University of Chicago "Pagis deftly draws readers into the world of contemporary vipasanna meditation, and in so doing shows us how fruitful--and important--sociological attention to the varied social practices that retool the relations of self and other, private and public, visible and invisible, can be. Inward is a beautifully rendered ethnography with important implications for the study of the body and self-making."--Courtney Bender, Columbia University

Rutgers University Press Impure Migration Jews and Sex Work in Golden Age

Book SynopsisInvestigates the period from the 1890s until the 1930s, when prostitution was legal in Argentina. At the same time, pogroms and anti-Semitic discrimination left thousands of Eastern European Jewish people displaced. For many Jewish women, participation in prostitution was one few ways they could escape the limited options in their home countries.Trade Review"Recommended."— Choice "Yarfitz has approached the delicate subject deftly and with sophistication."— H-Net “A fascinating account of Jewish participation in sexual commerce in Buenos Aires…Impure Migration deepens our knowledge of the relation between prostitution and migration.”— Cristiana Schettini, National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) / University of San Martín, Argentina “A tour de force. It transcends conventional accounts of victimized prostitutes and malevolent pimps with an intellectually bold exploration of sexual and racialized public anxieties. An important contribution to the history of international mobility, immigrant sociability, gendered labor, and multi-ethnic cities.”— José Moya, professor of history, Barnard College “Impure Migration presents a fascinating chapter in the history of Jewish immigration to the Americas... it is important that this story be made available.”— Adriana M. Book SynopsisAdelle Blackett tells the story behind the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Decent Work for Domestic Workers Convention No. 189, and its accompanying Recommendation No. 201 which in 2011 created the first comprehensive international standards to extend fundamental protections and rights to the millions of domestic workers laboring in...Trade ReviewThe book's breadth and grounding in labor law make it most accessible and useful to a professional audience, but even nonspecialists and lay readers will appreciate Blackett's insights about law and domestic work and provocative issues such as social stratification and immigration. * Choice *An important book for legal and policy historians concerned with labor, Blackett's volume encourages her readers to think about why standards for decent work must be transnational, responsive to workers' experiences, and inspired by a desire to see substantive justice rather than formal law implemented. * Labor: Studies in Working-Class History *Everyday Transgressions is a magnificent piece of research. Book SynopsisTracing two thousand years of female leadership, influence, and participation, Elizabeth Gillan Muir examines the various positions women have filled in the church. • Paradigms for a Metaphorology

Cornell University Press Paradigms for a Metaphorology

    2 in stock

Book Synopsis"Paradigms for a Metaphorology may be read as a kind of beginner''s guide to Blumenberg, a programmatic introduction to his vast and multifaceted oeuvre. Its brevity makes it an ideal point of entry for readers daunted by the sheer bulk of Blumenberg''s later writings, or distracted by their profusion of historical detail. Paradigms expresses many of Blumenberg''s key ideas with a directness, concision, and clarity he would rarely match elsewhere. What is more, because it served as a beginner's guide for its author as well, allowing him to undertake an initial survey of problems that would preoccupy him for the remainder of his life, it has the additional advantage that it can offer us a glimpse into what might be called the ''genesis of the Blumenbergian world.'"from the Afterword by Robert SavageWhat role do metaphors play in philosophical language? Are they impediments to clear thinking and clear expression, rhetorical flourishes that may well help to make philosophy more accessible to a lay audience, but that ought ideally to be eradicated in the interests of terminological exactness? Or can the images used by philosophers tell us more about the hopes and cares, attitudes and indifferences that regulate an epoch than their carefully elaborated systems of thought? In Paradigms for a Metaphorology, originally published in 1960 and here made available for the first time in English translation, Hans Blumenberg (19201996) approaches these questions by examining the relationship between metaphors and concepts. Blumenberg argues for the existence of "absolute metaphors" that cannot be translated back into conceptual language. These metaphors answer the supposedly naïve, theoretically unanswerable questions whose relevance lies quite simply in the fact that they cannot be brushed aside, since we do not pose them ourselves but find them already posed in the ground of our existence. They leap into a void that concepts are unable to fill.An afterword by the translator, Robert Savage, positions the book in the intellectual context of its time and explains its continuing importance for work in the history of ideas.Trade ReviewParadigms for a Metaphorology is a model of scholarly translation. Savage's handling of citations and sources is scrupulous and thorough.... And he provides judicious explanatory notes that work in conjunction with the afterword and Blumenberg's own notes to guide readers through Blumenberg's own reading and career. Finally, and most importantly, his English rendering is consistently accurate while also being, in the context of translations of German philosophy, remarkably readable.... In short, readers approaching Blumenberg's reflections on metaphor through the English language could not ask for a more reliable and helpful guide than this volume. -- David Adams * Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *Table of ContentsHans Blumenberg: An Introduction Part I: History, Secularization, and Reality 1. Book SynopsisRape is common during wartime, but even within the context of the same war, some armed groups perpetrate rape on a massive scale while others never do. In Rape during Civil War Dara Kay Cohen examines variation in the severity and perpetrators of rape using an original dataset of reported rape during all major civil wars from 1980 to 2012. Cohen also conducted extensive fieldwork, including interviews with perpetrators of wartime rape, in three postconflict counties, finding that rape was widespread in the civil wars of the Sierra Leone and Timor-Leste but was far less common during El Salvador''s civil war.Cohen argues that armed groups that recruit their fighters through the random abduction of strangers use rapeand especially gang rapeto create bonds of loyalty and trust between soldiers. The statistical evidence confirms that armed groups that recruit using abduction are more likely to perpetrate rape than are groups that use voluntary methods, even controlling for other Trade ReviewBrilliant, groundbreaking.... [Cohen’s] ability to address this difficult subject in a way that is analytical and sensitive, and to point to clear policy prescriptions that could apply her findings to very practical solutions to the problem of wartime rape is admirable. Cohen’s approach to generating new data through innovative and careful methodologies is one that future scholars who want to study rape and other sensitive topics should follow. Rape During Civil War is an agenda-setting book, a model of high-quality scholarship and a must-read for anyone interested in stopping rape in conflict before it happens. * The Washington Post *[Cohen's] achievement is to shift the debate away from the question of whether rape most often occurs as a result of a deliberate military strategy, ethnic hatred, or simple opportunism and to instead focus on what she calls 'combatant socialization.' * Foreign Affairs *Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Puzzle of Rape in Civil War1. • Curse on This Country

Cornell University Press Curse on This Country

Book SynopsisImperial Japanese soldiers were notorious for blindly following orders, and their enemies in the Pacific War derided them as cattle to the slaughter. But, in fact, the Japanese Army had a long history as one of the most disobedient armies in the world. Officers repeatedly staged coups d''états, violent insurrections, and political assassinations; their associates defied orders given by both the government and the general staff, launched independent military operations against other countries, and in two notorious cases conspired to assassinate foreign leaders despite direct orders to the contrary. In Curse on This Country, Danny Orbach explains the culture of rebellion in the Japanese armed forces. It was a culture created by a series of seemingly innocent decisions, each reasonable in its own right, which led to a gradual weakening of Japanese government control over its army and navy. The consequences were dire, as the armed forces dragged the government into more and more oTrade Review[Orbach] ties together the many violent events from the 1870s through the 1930s that were often studied in isolation to argue that both a culture of insubordination in the army that originated among the pro-emperor zealots of the 1860s and ideological hopes for the country facilitated unsanctioned violence connected to the army. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. * CHOICE *Draws on multi-lingual primary sources with an innovative re-interpretation through a 21st-century military and political lens that connects historical incidents, especially on the late Tokugawa shishi and their outsized influence on 20th-century Japan. * The Japan Times *Orbach’s book pulls off the difficult trick of talking to two audiences at once. Those only casually familiar with Japanese history will appreciate how thoroughly Orbach demolishes the hoary orientalist trope that Japanese soldiers were insect-like drones, mindlessly obedient to state propaganda. Specialists will be more interested in Orbach’s answer to what is still for many the great question of modern Japanese history: why did the country embark on a disastrous war of aggression in the mid-twentieth century?.... Orbach’s book is not just an important contribution to the historiography of Japan; it adds a key piece to the puzzle of understanding state-military relations across the global nineteenth century. * Pacific Affairs *Orbach's is a bold book.... I appreciated Orbach's original interpretation, his extensive research, and the fervor of his prose. Curse on this Country makes an important contribution to both military history and the history of Japan. * The Journal of Asian Studies *Well-researched and enlightening. * Asian Review of Books *Masterful.... Well-crafted and lucidly explained, Curse on This Country takes us on a journey from the bakumatsu era through a series of acts of insubordination, unauthorized military actions abroad, civil-military clashes, and rebellion.... Most of these incidents are well known to a historian of modern Japan, but Orbach shines new light on each incident and the circumstances surrounding them. However, the book's greatest contribution is that—to the best of this reviewer's knowledge—for the first time it ties all these together in one historical narrative, and as aspects of an evolving, but nevertheless single, phenomenon of Japan's modern army: its 'culture of subordination.'... Curse on This Country is a rich and sophisticated history that deserves to be read widely by students of modern Japanese history and military history. * Japan Review *Danny Orbach has written a splendid book in which he complicates our understanding of the road to war by demonstrating how a tradition of insubordinate military actions from below led modern Japan from the Meiji Restoration in the 1860s to World War II in the late 1930s.... His book is a gripping read. * Monumenta Nipponica *An interesting and well-written book which will be useful to both specialists and students. * The Journal of Japanese Studies *Despite the oft-displayed blind obedience and discipline of its soldiers in combat, the Imperial Japanese Army was, in fact, " one of the most disobedient armed forces in modern history." This statement provides the intriguing starting point for Danny Orbach's highly readable book Curse on This Country. * The Journal of Military History *Table of ContentsPart I: Age of Chaos: 1868–18782. Good's vigorous prose breathes life into the technology . . . and brings forward the people involved, with humor and sensitivity." -- Los Angeles Times"Good's book has been a standard history of the piano and the development of its mechanisms since its first publication. The second edition contains some improvements and enhancements but retains the overall plan of the first. . . . Good was able to add more detail to the information concerning early pianos, piano-shaped instruments, builders, and mechanisms. And in the last chapter, he has enlarged the twentieth-century view of the piano to include digital instruments and other technological developments. . . . The writing is clear and precise throughout, and the footnoted information and references are almost as valuable as the text itself. . . .
