American Mathematical Society Calculus Deconstructed A Second Course in
Book SynopsisOffers a thorough and mathematically rigorous exposition of single-variable calculus for readers with some previous exposure to calculus techniques but not to methods of proof. This book is appropriate for a beginning Honors Calculus course assuming high school calculus or a “bridge course” using basic analysis to illustrate mathematical rigour.Trade ReviewThe introduction of a calculus sequence to the high schools has necessitated the development of a course in college math programs to deal with the students that have taken the high school sequence when they arrive on campus. While some of the students coming out of the high school programs are mathematically very capable, many are weak and are not ready to proceed to the first course taken after a year of calculus. This book was developed as a response to these conditions, it can be considered as a ""calculus with basic analysis"" bridge course. ... Change always produces the need for reaction and that is true in education as well. In this case the author has done an excellent job in creating a text for a course in advanced calculus that could serve as a bridge course for incoming students that have had calculus in high school or those that took calculus years earlier. ..."" University of Toronto Press A History of Ukraine The Land and Its Peoples
Book SynopsisComprehensive, innovative, and geared towards teaching, the second edition of A History of Ukraine is ideal for both teachers and students.Trade Review'A magisterial history ... of the Ukrainian land and all the peoples who have fought over, thrived in, and suffered upon it, from the ancient Scythians ... to the present day.' -- Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs 'Reminiscent of some of the great works of Russian and Ukrainian history of the nineteenth century ... The book is characterized by wide and deep learning, remarkable objectivity, rational organization, clarity of presentation, and profound awareness of a variety of national sensitivities.' -- Dennis R. Papazian, History 'The task of writing a new history of Ukraine is a difficult balancing act ... Not only the end of the Cold War and the gradual reintegration of Eastern Europe into the European community but also the rethinking of the nation-state and nationalism as historical forces challenge the ways in which the teaching and writing of modern history have been structured. Magocsi's History will long serve as a model for those who dare to grapple with these central issues.' -- Mark von Hagen, The Journal of Modern History 'Magocsi's mastery of ethnographic material, his skillful inclusion of primary documents, and the valuable annotated bibliography make his work [a] useful and comprehensive tool for the student of Ukraine.' -- Paul S. Book SynopsisSweeping in scope and conceptually ambitious, this book tells a story of infrastructure and of global flows of money, goods, and people.Trade Review"What is the relation between the unity and stability of the nation-state and the state of a nation's infrastructure? In addressing this question, Roads forces us to consider, among much else, the expertise of infrastructure's architects, the construction engineers, whose work is attuned to the instability, unruliness and unevenness of the environments within which infrastructure is assembled. The infrastructure of the road turns out not to be the stable base on which the state can ground its existence, but a situated achievement. Penny Harvey and Hannah Knox’s remarkable ethnography of infrastructure is a vital intervention, in anthropology and beyond." -- Andrew Barry, University College London, author of Material Politics: Disputes Along the PipelineTable of ContentsIntroduction: Anthropology, Infrastructure, and ExpertisePART I. University of Minnesota Press When Species Meet
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDonna Haraway’s latest book, When Species Meet, is a stunning meditation on the ordinary. Tying together questions of interspecies encounters and alternative practices of world building, Haraway explores how contemporary human beings interact with various critters to form meanings, experiences, and worlds. The text effortlessly slides between theory and autobiography; one of the driving connections in this regard is Ms. Cayenne Pepper, an Australian sheepdog whose “darter-tongue kisses” compel Haraway to look closely at what biologist Lynn Margulis calls “symbiogenesis,” a process that explains how life forms continually intermingle, leading to ever more “intricate and multidirectional acts of association of and with other life forms.” From lab animals to interspecies love to breeding purebreds, Haraway ensures that her readers will never look at human-animal encounters of any sort in the same way again. While those familiar with Haraway’s oeuvre will find numerous connections to her earlier work, she does an excellent job of narrating how she came to the questions at the heart of When Species Meet and (perhaps most importantly) what is at stake for her in these questions, politically and otherwise. Of particular interest to philosophy buffs are Haraway’s gratifying critiques of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s well-known writing on “becoming-animal”; these critiques arise as part of Haraway’s overall challenge to the boundaries between “wild” or “domestic” creatures. Similarly, her response to Jacques Derrida’s ruminations on animals reveals the provocations that can arise from work that pokes holes in conventional disciplinary engagements with any given topic. Haraway’s willingness to take on both biology and philosophy, to cite only two of her resources, results in suggestive insights on a number of issues, but especially (with Derrida, et. al.) regarding the question of what it means to take animals seriously.I found Haraway’s considerable enthusiasm and knowledge in When Species Meet to be invigorating. This book should appeal to a broad audience including animal lovers, scientists and their allies, theorists, and people who love random and little known information (e.g., the history of imported North American gray wolves during South African apartheid). While Haraway emphasizes that her desire to look more carefully at companion species, those “who eat and break bread together but not without some indigestion,” does not come with any guarantees, she infectiously believes that there is a good deal at stake in the mundane and extraordinary details of the co-shaping species she documents across these pages. Given her hope for the worldly orientations, such as curiosity and respect, that might be cultivated by looking at companion species differently, it is appropriate that she begins and ends the text by reminding us that “[t]here is no assured happy or unhappy ending — socially, ecologically, or scientifically. There is only the chance for getting on together with some grace.”Review by Marie Draz, Feminist Review Blog

Duke University Press Left of Karl Marx
Book SynopsisAssesses the activism, writing, and legacy of Claudia Jones (1915–1964), a pioneering Afro-Caribbean radical intellectual active in the U.S. and U.K.Trade Review“Carole Boyce Davies has rendered a unique service in restoring to proper recognition the life and achievements of the Trinidad-born political activist and feminist Claudia Jones. From the turbulent struggles of Harlem, U.S.A. in the 1930s and 1940s to London in the 1950s and 1960s, Claudia Jones became a symbol of resistance and the standard by which others would measure their own integrity of commitment. Left of Karl Marx is the biography of an era of the most intense ideological combat—where reputations were assassinated and careers erased by a single rumor of incorrect political affiliation. Here is the story of a singular triumph whose legacy has nourished the lives of another generation.”—George Lamming, author of In the Castle of My Skin and The Pleasures of Exile“Carole Boyce Davies has vividly brought to life the work and struggles of Claudia Jones in the U.S.A. and Great Britain in her new book, Left of Karl Marx. Boyce Davies possesses that unique combination of being both a scholarly researcher and a writer capable of clear and persuasive language. The reader is presented with a remarkably readable and informative study of a woman who was equally adept in her writing and public speaking on feminism, and as a social pioneer, a political analyst, and an avowed adversary of racism. This book removes Claudia Jones from the shadow of the great bust of Marx to the front row of the black activists and thinkers of the twentieth century, and that is where she belongs.”—Donald Hinds, author of Journey to an Illusion: The West Indian in Britain“This book fills a lacuna in the historical understanding of black left radicalism and socialist-oriented feminism in the United States and the Caribbean. In this era of twenty-first-century corporate globalization, it reunites us with a transnational radical and anti-capitalist past through the examination of the extraordinary life, work, and political philosophy of Claudia Jones. This work reminds us that the U.S. and British radical traditions had diverse memberships, which included black, communist, and feminist women of whom Trinidad-born Claudia Jones was a remarkable example. Carole Boyce Davies has given us a well-researched, detailed analysis of this communist, feminist, intellectual, activist, and artistic woman of Caribbean origin. This is a long-awaited treasure for which many will be eternally grateful.”—Rhoda E. Reddock, author of Interrogating Caribbean Masculinities

University of Toronto Press Theory Building in Social Work
Book SynopsisThis is essentially a book about theory building. Instead of actually presenting theory, it suggests and illustrates a particular way in which the social work profession, or any of the other service professions, might pursue the task of developing theory to refine its mode of practice. While written for every professional, it is directed, in particular, to those most actively engaged in the development and refinement of theory for their profession. It is a personal document in the sense that it is a chronicle of the author's reflections about how a profession might pursue most profitably this aspect of its total function.

Duke University Press On Decoloniality
Book SynopsisWalter D. Mignolo and Catherine E. Walsh introduce the concept of decoloniality by providing a theoretical overview and discussing concrete examples of decolonial projects in action.Trade Review"As the first book in the Decoloniality series, it sets the tone and terms; it opens the conversation on decoloniality that is relevant globally as the Right rises and the colonial matrix of power is only strengthened through global capitalism. On Decoloniality brings important insights to the fore from locations not as well-known by English-reading theorists who might not concentrate on colonial language areas other than English." -- Laura Marie de Vos * Transmotion *"On Decoloniality reflects on what it means to think, live and act decolonially in our present moment: what is at stake when we seek a decolonial perspective in both theory and praxis. This is not a compilation of the latest literature or a comprehensive introduction to decolonial thought, but rather an invitation to think dialectically about the decolonial praxis(es) and decolonial analytics." -- Rosa M. O'Connor Acevedo * Radical Philosophy Review *"Although divided into two distinct parts authored under individual signatures, this is a book, which like a piano concert for two hands, displays a high degree of interplay and collaboration between Mignolo and Walsh. . . . For all readers and doers a major challenge and invitation is issued in the pages of On Decoloniality for learning how to think relationality will make serious demands of all imaginaries and modes of thinking we have thus far inherited and developed. This carefully thought-out book is not only a necessary intervention in the annals of 'theory' but a felicitous achievement in collaboration and in bringing together the task of presenting concepts, analytics and praxis under one single treatise." -- Sara Castro-Klarén * MLN *"In the current climate of trying to rethink everything in order to find a way out of the contemporary morass of bankrupt and destructive epistemologies that are destroying the planet, [this] book is a timely intervention. It succinctly offers the reasons to find new concepts as well as providing incremental steps that do not simply reproduce what we 'know' already." -- Sneja Gunew * Postcolonial Text *"Recalling Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang's critique that reminds us that decolonisation is more than a metaphor for Indigenous peoples, the participants in this forum grapple with the colonial matrix of power and modernity/coloniality/decoloniality analytics to unbuild violence and imagine worlds of hope and freedom through alliances that recognise settler guilt." -- Michele Lobo * Postcolonial Studies *"The fable of modernity was the unifying arc of this aggressive universalism, and Mignolo’s principal argument is that any variety of Marxist argument that focuses primarily on capitalism, class, and material exploitation misses the forms of power that came through this cultural and epistemological domination. To resist and replace it with another epistemological worldview, Walsh and Mignolo recommend decoloniality, an outlook that embraces Indigenous modes of thinking and rejects those Western expressions of modernity imposed on much of the world through colonialism and empire." -- Arjun Appadurai * The Nation *"An un-disciplinary read, challenging the foundational logic of Western knowledge production." -- Kirsten Mundt * Cultural Studies *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Introduction 1 I. Indiana University Press Metamorphoses
Book SynopsisNow available for the first time in an annotated edition, Rolfe Humphriess legendary translation captures the spirit of Ovid's swift and conversational language, bringing the wit and sophistication of the Roman poet to modern readers. These are some of the most famous Roman myths as youve never read them before—sensuous, dangerously witty, audacious.Trade Review"One of the most captivating books ever written, a whole library of love stories, murder stories, horror stories, fairy stories, and adventure stories. . . Humphries's version. . . has the sound merits of directness, unpretentiousness and integrity. . . [His English is] swift, lucid . . . and admirably suited to its general purpose, the telling of a story." –New York Times"It is very much alive, fresh, racy, and above all, vivid. . . .Humphries reproduces most successfully the speed and animation of Ovid's narrative, its modernity, its gaiety, and its tenderness." –Classical Review"So easy to read that one may have to think twice to realize these tales are nearly 2000 years old." –Washington PostNot too many 12,000-line translations from the '50s are still in print, let alone getting a brand new set of annotations. About those I wanna say: jam a bookmark back there and read every single note. They're the real thing, impossible to fake. . . . As for the translation as a whole, the main thing it's got going for it is clarity. I, for one, felt I was able to pay attention to the stuff like never before. . . . So I say double thumbs up to Humphries and Reed. Recommended. * RHINO *Reed's annotated edition of Ovid's realistic, moving, and influential classic can now easily be adopted for classroom use, and it will also serve the curious who wish to know more about this unparalleled, captivating array of Roman mythology. . . . Highly recommended. * Choice *One of the most captivating books ever written, a whole library of love stories, murder stories, horror stories, fairy stories, and adventure stories. . . University of Toronto Press European Magic and Witchcraft
Book SynopsisMagic, witches, and demons have drawn interest and fear throughout human history. In this comprehensive primary source reader, Martha Rampton traces the history of our fascination with magic and witchcraft from the first through to the seventeenth century. In over 80 readings presented chronologically, Rampton demonstrates how understandings of and reactions toward magic changed and developed over time, and how these ideas were influenced by various factors such as religion, science, and law. The wide-ranging texts emphasize social history and include early Merovingian law codes, the Picatrix, Lombard’s Sentences, The Golden Legend, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By presenting a full spectrum of source types including hagiography, law codes, literature, and handbooks, this collection provides readers with a broad view of how magic was understood through the medieval and early modern eras.Rampton’s introduction to the voTrade Review"Anyone looking for significant attention paid to the medieval period, and especially the earlier medieval centuries, will find it here. And for the late medieval and early modern periods, its attention to different kinds of sources, especially its mix of literature and drama along with legal and demonological texts, is a welcome addition." -- Michael D. Bailey, Iowa State University * The Medieval Review *"For several decades now, magic and witchcraft have been the focus of scholarly attention, and Martha Rampton’s reader – a collection of primary texts that prepares the topic in all its breadth for use in the classroom – is a welcome addition. University of Toronto Press has to be thanked for providing teachers, students, and scholars alike with a rich and voluminous source-book, albeit less affordable than one might have hoped. European Magic and Witchcraft presents carefully selected texts, eighty-six examples from very different genres, from biblical times to the early modern period in chronological order. Some of these texts are famous and have had an enormous cultural impact, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Augustine’s City of God, while others are quite rare, such as Alferic of Eynsham (ca. 955–1010) or court records of the use of torture in early modern witchcraft trials." -- Sergius Kodera, University of Vienna * Renaissance and Reformation / Renaissance et Réforme *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface Chapter One: Late Classical and Early Christian Archetypes 1.
