  • Shaped by Stories

University of Notre Dame Press Shaped by Stories

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStarts with the premise that our lives are saturated with stories, ranging from magazines, books, films, television, and blogs to the words spoken by politicians, pastors, and teachers. This title explores the ethical implication of this nearly universal human obsession with narratives.Trade Review"Shaped by Stories is a well-written, interesting, and humane book on the value of narratives in ethics and in our lives. The volume enters into conversation with a growing, and popular, body of literature, which considers the role of stories, narrative, and literature for ethics and for moral education more generally. Marshall Gregory combines well-grounded observations about literature and about human life, including his own life, in this illuminating interdisciplinary contribution to the ethics of literature." —Pamela Hall, Emory University"From a lifetime of reflecting on the ethics of fiction, Marshall Gregory has given us an elegant analysis of the power of stories to instruct and delight. No one interested in storytelling will want to be without this incisive guide to both the myriad ways that stories shape our lives and the strategies writers use to affect our responses to their fictions. Both the theoretical and practical halves of Shaped by Stories have a clarity and eloquence that yield their own instruction and delight." —Robert D. Denham, Fishwick Professor of English, Roanoke College"Shaped by Stories weaves its own compelling story about the pervasive ethical effects of reading narrative, with Marshall Gregory serving as a highly engaging and ethically admirable narrator—a very model of good company." —James Phelan, Distinguished University Professor of English, Ohio State University"Marshall Gregory's Shaped by Stories brings ethical criticism to the level of felt experience. Witty and passionate, full of personal reflections and sharp examples, this book will help anyone who has been drawn to the mysterious power of stories to think more carefully about the connections between narrative art and human ethos. Gregory reminds us that the urgency of our need for stories is tied permanently to the requirements of being human, the need to exercise judgment, belief, and empathy in the process of becoming who we are." —Annette Federico, James Madison University“Gregory's overarching thesis is ‘that stories are an important component of the ethical development that all human beings undergo because stories are an important component of every human being's education about the world.’ . . . [an] elegantly written, amiable, argot-free study. Gregory fills the book with relevant personal examples and draws on a lifetime of engagement with narratives and thoughtful, down-to-earth considerations of their impact. A generous works cited makes it an exceptionally useful resource. . . . This is a book every serious reader should investigate and all libraries should own. Essential.” —Choice“Marshall Gregory’s Shaped by Stories: The Ethical power of Narratives, informal and anecdotal rather than scholarly, makes the familiar claim that narrative is a tool for psychologically modeling conflict management.” —Studies in English Literature, 1500-1900“Marshall Gregory’s new book has its roots in influential studies of ethics and literature published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. . . . In addressing the book to a broad, general audience rather than critics or academic professionals, he is appealing to a culture obsessed with narrative to think reflectively about how the stories we encounter daily in such a variety of forms shape our ethos. Gregory’s passionate conviction about the topic’s relevance is apparent on every page. In its directness, lucidity, personal humor, and warmth, Shaped by Stories will indeed engage a wide variety of readers. The ultimate value of this book is the way it welcomes and extends discussion of ethics.” —Victorian Studies“Marshall Gregory utilizes the power of story, often his own, to reach into the minds and consciousness of academics and laypersons alike. His goal is to open a dialogue between people, about people, and the possible reasons story affects human behaviors and characters . . . . He challenges his readers to enter the real controversial dialogue. Gregory does not propose one specific ethic, but he dares to present the fact that there are ethics that cannot be escaped behind the blind of relativism.” —Sixteenth Century Journal

Book SynopsisEnglish translations of two important fifteenth-century writings on witchcraft by Johannes Hartlieb and Ulrich Molitoris. Introduction discusses the writings, the authors, their historical environments, the ways they used sources, and their influence on the development of ideas about witchcraft.Trade Review“These two little-known fifteenth-century texts are here expertly translated into English for the first time by one of the world’s leading authorities on medieval magic and witchcraft. They document the involvement of laymen in the early prosecution of witchcraft and provide valuable context for more famous works such as the Malleus maleficarum. The introduction deftly introduces the authors and places the works in the long tradition of manuals for princes. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of magic, witchcraft, heresy, or ‘aberrant’ beliefs.”—Daniel Hobbins, author of Authorship and Publicity Before Print“The two essays presented for the first time in English in Richard Kieckhefer’s Hazards of the Dark Arts show a comparable but refracted view of early modern opinion, reminding us to never underrate its intricacy.”—Camille Ralphs Times Literary Supplement“This is a very useful and engaging volume, and deserves to be widely used in teaching on magic, witchcraft, and courtly culture in the medieval and early modern periods. • King Noir The Crime Fiction of Stephen King

MP-MPP University Press of Mississippi King Noir The Crime Fiction of Stephen King

Book SynopsisOver the past thirty years, Stephen King has received enormous attention from both the popular press as well as academics seeking to explain the unique phenomenon of his success. Books on King explore his canon in religious contexts, in political and historical contexts, in mythicspecifically Jungiancontexts, in Gothic/horror (especially American literary) contexts, and in a wide variety of other contexts appropriate to a writer who, over the past half century, has become "America's Storyteller." Beginning with a never-published chapter authored by Stephen King himself on the influence of the genre on his own writing, King Noir makes an invaluable contribution to King scholarship by placing King's works in conversation with American crime fiction. This is the third book that Tony Magistrale and Michael J. Blouin have coauthored on the work of Stephen King, and the first to consider King's canon through the lens of crime fiction. King Noir examines not only King's own efforts at writing in the detective genre, but also how the detective genre finds its way into work typically regarded as horror fiction. In interviews, King has acknowledged his debt to earlier writers in the genre, such as Ed McBain and Raymond Chandler, and he much more often references hardboiled writers than he does horror writers. One could speculate that King became a writer because of his love of pulpy crime fiction, which he continues to hold in high esteem. From The Dead Zone to Mr. Mercedes, from the crime fiction of his pseudonym Richard Bachman to his most recent novel Holly, King returns obsessively to patterns established by American sleuths of every stripe, paying homage to them at the same time as he innovates on the formulas he has inherited. To focus upon a hardboiled Stephen King is to discover exciting new avenues for inquiry into one of America's most enduring, and adaptable, storytellers.

University Press of Mississippi D. A. Pennebaker

Book SynopsisThis wide-ranging and insightful collection of interviews with D. A. Pennebaker (19252019) spans the prolific career of this pioneer of observational cinema. From the 1950s, Pennebaker made documentary films that revealed the world of politics, celebrity culture, and the music industry. Following his early collaborations with Robert Drew on a number of works for television, his feature-length portrait of Bob Dylan on tour in England in 1965 (the landmark film Dont Look Back) established so-called direct cinema as a form capable of achieving broad theatrical release. With Monterey Pop, Pennebaker inaugurated the popular mode of rock concert film (or rockumentary), a style of filmmaking he expanded on through a number of films, including Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Depeche Mode: 101. Pennebaker always regarded collaboration as an integral part of his filmmaking methods. His long-running collaboration with Richard Leacock and subsequently his work with Chris Hegedus en

Ohio University Press A Poets Prose

Book SynopsisAlthough best known as a master of the formal lyric poem, Louise Bogan (1897–1970) also published fiction and what would now be called lyrical essays. A Poet’s Prose: Selected Writings of Louise Bogan showcases her devotion to compression, eloquence, and sharp truths.LouiseTrade Review“In whatever she wrote, the line of truth was exactly superimposed on the line of feeling. One look at her work—or sometimes one look at her—made any number of disheartened artists take heart and go on being the kind of dedicated creatures they were intended to be.” * The New Yorker *“I am deeply grateful for this collection of Louise Bogan’s prose. She is an American lyric master, both in prose and poetry, a critic of singular distinction and acuity. She has not been given her due, and this collection will go far to redressing the balance.”“This master lyric poet’s crisp, insightful New Yorker pieces on poetry hold up superbly to the passing of time and fashions. But beyond those brilliant reviews, here are unexpected treasures: Bogan’s fiction, letters and journal entries disclose in new ways a literary mind of distinction, wit and depth. In the unpublished poems too, there are flashes of gold. A treasure-book.”

Book SynopsisThis is a study of Virginia Woolf's lifelong preoccupation with silence and the barrier between the sayable and the unsayable.Trade Review"Laurence's groundbreaking study teaches us how to read Virginia Woolf's psychological, social, historical, philosophical, rhythmic, and structural silences as it weaves multi-colored threads into a shimmering whole: Woolf's novels; the major works in Woolf criticism; the English literary tradition, male and female; surrealist painting and contemporary music; philosophy, psychoanalysis, and linguistics; and structuralism, post-structuralism, deconstruction, reader response, and feminism. It suggests new directions for Woolf criticism . . . Lawrence's writing style is remarkably readable, clear, and careful."—English Language Notes"Using a wide range of thinkers from Kierkegaard to Kristeva and Derrida, Laurence demonstrates convincingly that Woolf was the rst modern woman novelist to practice silence in her writing and that, in so doing, she created a new language of the mind . . . and changed the metaphor of silence from one of absence or oppression to one of presence and strength."—Belles Lettres

From 1919 to 1923 he told his story of Crow life and wars to William Wildschut, an ethnologist with the Museum of the American Indian . . . . This is the poignant story of the end of traditional Crow life and attitudes, which Two Leggings saw ending with the last warfare rather than the death of the buffalo."—Pacific Historian"This is the story of Two Leggings’ desire for fame, his rise as a warrior, and his efforts to achieve a spiritual vision. He takes us along on buffalo hunts, war parties against the Piegans, and horse stealing raids against the Piegans and Sioux. His obsession to become a chief and famous warrior drove him to repeated forays against enemy tribes for scalps and horses. This is still the only available translation of all three volumes of Hegel's history."—Frederick C. Beiser, The Fate of Reason: German Philosophy from Kant to Fichte“The main reason why Hegel will remain worthy of study lies in his incomparable gathering together of the whole range of human experience into vital connection with what is best in that experience. . . . He is, without doubt, the Aristotle of our post-Renaissance world.”—J. N. Findlay, Hegel: A Re-examination

Book SynopsisThe first book to address specific connections between the Boer War and the opening months of World War I, Spencer Jones's fresh interpretation adds to the historiography of both wars by emphasizing the continuity between them.Trade ReviewIn this well-written, convincing study, Spencer Jones admirably demonstrates how the British Expeditionary Force was shaped by the lessons of the Boer War. He shows that the Boer War period is crucial in terms of military history and the transformation of ideas, and that it has been overlooked by historians of World War I for too long. This is an important work."" - Stephen M. Miller, author of Volunteers on the Veld: Britain's Citizen Soldiers and the South African War, 1899 - 1902""Spencer Jones's thorough research, combined with a full awareness of the existing literature, makes this a valuable contribution to our understanding of the lessons learnt from the Boer War by the British Army and their importance for British tactical reforms before the Great War. As the author succinctly proves, the tactical foundations of the victories of 1914 were laid down by the bitter experience of the Boer War and subsequent reforms. Reading Jones's work is an immense pleasure."" - Fransjohan Pretorius, author of Historical Dictionary of the Anglo-Boer War and The Great Escape of the Boer Pimpernel: Christiaan de Wet - The Making of a LegendFrom Boer War to World War is on the must-read list for anyone with a serious interest in twentieth-century British military history - Journal of British Studies
