Paperblanks Terrene Medina Mystic Grande Unlined Hardcover
Book SynopsisThis lovely, organic pattern comes from the illustrious carpet-making traditions of the Moldavian people. The earliest known Moldavian carpets can be dated to the late 18th century, though archaeological findings suggest the craft tradition goes back to the 14th- and 15th-century weaving mills of the Moldavian countryside. By mixing ideals of beauty and harmony with folk mysticism and mythology, Moldavian craftspeople elevate everyday carpets to works of spiritual and cultural expression. Over the centuries, these beautiful, handcrafted carpets have been cherished and passed down through generations, keeping this artistic tradition alive even with the advent of modern technology.<#13>This particular design comes from a contemporary rug manufacturer, Floare Carpet, who design their floor coverings in the traditional ways. They originally named this carpet pattern Medina, and its intricate pattern and warm colouring makes it feel both exciting and familiar all at once.<#13>

Paperblanks Diamond Jubilee Sangorski Sutcliffe Ultra
Book SynopsisThis glorious design comes from Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a world-renowned British bindery best known for their bejewelled cover of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat.<#13>Established in London in 1901, Sangorski & Sutcliffe quickly rose to become one of the 20th century's most important bookbinders. They were celebrated for their jewelled bindings, like the one reproduced here. Crafted in 1922 to house Rudyard Kipling's 1897 Recessional poem, written for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the original binding incorporated real turquoise, aquamarine and ruby gemstones, alongside medieval-style illumination by Alberto Sangorski and gold tooling by George Sutcliffe.<#13>In the late 1980s, Sangorski & Sutcliffe was acquired by Asprey, joining forces with Zaehnsdorf under the SSZ umbrella. But the family name was restored in 1998 when Shepherds Bookbinders bought the company. It is an honour to work with such a luxurious bookbinding and to share the legacy of Sangorski & Sutcliffe with

McGill-Queen's University Press Kingdom of Barracks
Book SynopsisKingdom of Barracks depicts the texture of everyday life in refugee camps in postwar Europe. Taking a bottom-up perspective, Katarzyna Nowak examines the experiences of Polish Displaced Persons in the shadow of the mounting Cold War and explores the formation of cultural identity in exile through the lenses of class, gender, body, and nationality.Trade Review“Throughout the fresh retelling of life in the barracks and the complex efforts of the DPs to find their way in the postwar order, Katarzyna Nowak gives agency and individuality back to the refugees. Everyday life here is neither idealized as consistently committed to a national agenda nor generalized as a mere set of responses to the rigid rules of camp officials. Rather, Nowak brings out the petty crime, the love affairs, the desperate efforts to keep families together, and the myriad ways DPs sought to game the system of impersonal bureaucracy. She breathes new life into the stories of a whole generation of survivors, who were compelled to live in extended postwar deprivation for many years past the end of formal hostilities in Europe. As a result, Kingdom of Barracks makes a tremendous contribution to our understanding of Cold War refugeedom, the evolution of the Polish diaspora, and changes to the cultural makeup of Polishness abroad.” Keely Stauter-Halsted, University of Illinois Chicago and author of The Nation in the Village: The Genesis of Peasant National Identity in Austrian Poland, 1848–1914“Nowak’s well-written and well-re‐ searched cultural and social history of Polish dis‐ placed persons in the aftermath of the Second World War... is an exemplary addition to the canon of postwar historical literature. Her ability to weave individual destinies in and out of international political processes allows the author to keep displaced per‐ sons’ interests at the forefront of their own history while continuously giving them a voice in defining their own lives – and histories. Nowak’s Kingdom of Barracks is, therefore, a formidable addition to a growing body of literature that focuses on some of the traditionally forgotten victims of Nazism, a deficit of literature that historical academia has only begun to address in recent years." New York University Press The Reproduction of Inequality
Book SynopsisAn important analysis of the difference class makes in reproductive health choicesCan you run a marathon, drink coffee, eat fish, or fly on a plane while pregnant? Such questions are just the tip of the iceberg for how most pregnant women's bodies are managed, surveilled, and scrutinized during pregnancy. The Reproduction of Inequality examines the intense social pressure that expectant and new mothers face when it comes to their health and body-care choices.Drawing on interviews with dozens of pregnant women and new mothers from poor, middle-class, and mixed-class backgrounds, Katherine Mason paints a vivid picture of the immense weight of expectation that comes with the early stages of motherhood. The women in Mason's study universally sought to give their children a healthy start in life; however, their chosen approaches varied based on their socio-economic class. Whereas middle-class mothers attempted a complete lifestyle change and absolute devotion toTrade ReviewFrom gestational diabetes to drinking coffee, The Reproduction of Inequality maps how pregnant bodies are subject to increasingly high levels of medical and moral scrutiny. Theorizing pregnancy, birth, and post-partum conditions through the lens of gendered, classed, and racialized 'reproductive body projects,' Kate Mason captures the contradictions in the expectations for perfect designer pregnancies in the face of eroded infrastructures for healthcare, childcare, and general support for childbirth and childrearing. Based on rich interviews, this book tells moving, in-depth personal stories while contributing to important debates in sociology, gender studies, and health-related fields * Miliann Kang, author of The Managed Hand: Race, Gender and the Body in Beauty Service Work *For everyone who cares deeply about maternal and child health and addressing health inequities, this book is a gift. Delivering an insightful and sophisticated analysis of how biological reproduction is intertwined with social reproduction, Katherine Mason elegantly reveals the cultural meanings and stakes of reproductive body projects in the twenty-first century. The Reproduction of Inequality is a truly wonderful book. * Miranda R. Waggoner, author of The Zero Trimester: Pre-Pregnancy Care and the Politics of Reproductive Risk *The Reproduction of Inequality shows how adopting so-called ‘healthy lifestyles’ during pregnancy and post-partum is not just about health. It provides privileged mothers a way to display their social status and transmit it to their children, while worsening gendered inequalities at home. A must-read for anyone interested in social inequality, gender, family, and health! * Abigail C. Saguy, author of Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are *The Reproduction of Inequality provides a much-needed demonstration of the ways that ‘health’ has become a rigid moralized ideology reinforcing racialized class divides between mothers. Professor Mason insightfully instructs that while nearly all mothers and pregnant people want what is best for their babies, only those with resources and privilege are trusted to make the “right” choices -- self- sacrificing, responsible, well-informed decisions – on everything from having a cup of coffee while pregnant to regaining control over a postpartum body, and perhaps most important, to inculcating a near-religious devotion to 'health' in one’s children. * Linda M. Blum, author of At the Breast: Ideologies of Motherhood and Breastfeeding in the Contemporary US *

Bodleian Library A Christmas Carol
Book SynopsisMarley’s ghost, Bob Cratchit’s slide down icy Cornhill, Mr and Mrs Fezziwig’s dance, and of course Ebenezer Scrooge himself, are all exquisitely illustrated in this luxury collector’s edition of Charles Dickens’s perennial seasonal favourite. Arthur Rackham’s colour wash drawings and silhouettes, first published during the First World War, bring a threatening and haunting atmosphere to Scrooge’s story, which contrasts wonderfully with the gifts and games of Belle’s household. Rackham was a leading illustrator in the golden age of book illustration, when groundbreaking techniques for colour printing were developing fast. He illustrated over sixty books and specialized in children’s classics and fairy tales. This landmark edition helped to consolidate the idea of the Dickensian Christmas and the tradition of the Christmas gift book. It is a beautiful version of a classic story, which never ceases to be relevant to our times.

University of Toronto Press Coerced Liberation
Book SynopsisIn 1924, the Bolshevik regime began an unprecedented campaign to forcibly emancipate the Muslim women of Tajikistan. The emancipatory reforms included unveiling women, passing progressive family code laws, and educating women. By the 1950s, the Soviet regime largely succeeded in putting an end to veiling, child marriage, polygamy, and bride payments. Yet today there is a resurgence in these practices the Bolsheviks claimed to have eliminated. Coerced Liberation reveals that the Soviet regime transformed the lives of urban women within a single generation but without lasting effect.Drawing on unique primary sources, the book examines why this occurred. It addresses questions that are pertinent to ongoing debates in the international arena: What happens when an outside force attempts to modernize a society deeply rooted in centuries of patriarchal norms and values? In what ways can a devout religious rural community respond to, survive, and adapt to such interventions?

Book SynopsisEvery year in the United States, 12 per cent of all births are preterm births, 5 per cent of all babies need help to breathe at birth, and 3 per cent of neonates are born with at least one severe malformation. Many of these babies are hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit. Annie Janvier and her husband, Keith Barrington, are both pediatricians who specialize in the care of these sick babies and are internationally known for their research in this area. In 2005, when their daughter Violette was born extremely prematurely, four months before her due date, they faced the situation from the other side as parents. Despite knowing the scientific facts, they knew nothing about the experience itself. Knowing how a respirator works did not help me be the mother of a baby on a respirator, writes Annie. She did not know how to navigate the guilt, the uncertainty, the fears, the predictions of providers, and the responses of friends and family. In a society oTable of ContentsForeword by John D.
