Book SynopsisThis delicate foliage pattern was originally crafted to adorn a 17th-century binding of the Passion Series. The original work was created in 1521 by the northern Renaissance painter Lucas van Leyden, one of the greatest engravers of his time.<#13>This edition does not contain Van Leyden's 1521 version, but rather a copy of it done by Jan Harmensz. Muller, an artist best known for his skillful reinterpretations of the work of his predecessors. So exactly replicated were his engravings, that Van Leyden's original dates and monogram appear in Muller's woodcut plates. Though there is no indication that Muller himself attempted to pass off his work as that of the earlier master, scratched-out marks in this edition suggest that previous owners tried to make it appear as though they owned an original Van Leyden. It is only thanks to a small engraving of Muller's name that we know this is a reproduction.<#13>With a complicated history not unlike the tangled branches depicted

Book SynopsisHarmonious flowers, balanced colours and highly precise details create the eye-catching, high-impact effect of this Japanese kimono design.Originally designed as a costume for the theatrical style known as Noh, our Kara-ori pattern leaves little doubt why Noh is derived from the words for skill and talent. With silk and gold lacquered stripes, this is one of the best examples of Japanese textile design we have found. It comes from the Edo period (16151868) when Noh theatre, known for the sumptuousness of its costumes, was at its height.Noh theatre is one of the world's oldest performing arts and has been handed down through generations of Japanese composers and performers. The plots draw from legend, history and contemporary events and are structured around song and dance. Though the thematic tone is often poetic yet monotonous, the costumes are anything but. Paperblanks Lily Tomato Mira Botanica Ultra Lined Journal
Book SynopsisThe art of still life painting is a celebrated part of Dutch culture, but this time-honoured artistic style didn't develop from thin air. Before still life emerged, there were illustrators who delicately illuminated handwritten manuscripts with images of flora and fauna to add emotional power to a written work.<#13>One of the most celebrated practitioners of this style was Joris Hoefnagel (15421601). Hoefnagel, apivotal artistic figure from the Netherlands, is remembered as being the last important Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to work on the new genre of still life. In the 1590s theEmperor Rudolf II commissioned Hoefnagel to add his illuminations to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a mid-16th-century manuscript on the art of calligraphy by Georg Bocskay. The page reproduced here is known as Martagon Lily and Tomato. Today, the book can be found in the Getty Museum.

Book SynopsisThe eternal appeal of a classic floral design is captured in the work of Irish illustrator William Kilburn (17451818). The artist behind William Curtis' Flora Londinensis, a comprehensive book on 18th-century English botany, Kilburn was also a leading designer and printer of calico.<#13>With winding twigs, colourful petals and undulating seaweed, Kilburn's unique ability to blend local flora with exotic plants is on full display in this design. This characteristic sense of creative freedom became so sought after that by the late 1700s his style was widely imitated. To protect his signature patterns, Kilburn became an activist for artists' rights, fighting in court to defend copyright in the textile industry.<#13>Sadly, Kilburn was unsuccessful in stopping his designs from being copied, and he died bankrupt in1818. Paperblanks Wilde The Importance of Being Earnest Embellished
Book SynopsisA man as tormented as he was beloved, Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) overcame a life of extraordinary ups and downs to become a world-renowned playwright, author and poet. He stands as one of the most influential writers of the Victorian era. Wilde’s work is fraught with the insights of a man who possessed a deep understanding of both the positives and perils of society. Criticized for what was perceived as an “effeminate nature” and oppressed by a largely homophobic world, Wilde remained resilient. He used his experiences to form brilliant, if controversial, literary works. The comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, a draft of which is reproduced here, was a great success upon opening but saw its run cut short when Wilde was imprisoned for “gross indecency.” This represented one of the first famous celebrity trials but was, sadly, only one of many persecutions of a member of the LGBTQ community for a consensual act.
