Book SynopsisMichelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known simply as Michelangelo, was a child prodigy who became one of the most revered artists in history. His first known painting, an adaptation of The Torment of Saint Anthony, was finished when he was 12 or 13, documented by biographers during his lifetime. He apprenticed in the court of the Medici dynasty of bankers and art patrons in Florence, Italy, where he studied classical antiquities and was surrounded by poets, philosophers, and artists. Like his High Renaissance contemporary (and rival) Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo was known for intense, evocative works of physical realism. Among his masterpieces is the ceiling of the Vatican City's Sistine Chapel; its renowned centerpiece, The Creation of Adam, illustrates the divine breath of life.

Book SynopsisInspired by space exploration and the earthly delights of gardens and music, Alma Thomas created brilliant abstractions that place her among the most innovative American painters of the 20th century. Breaking from realism in the 1950s, she moved through abstraction and into expressionism before finding a niche in a mosaic compositional style and reveling in colour theory. With vibrant works such as Lunar Rendezvous-Circle of Flowers and Apollo 12 Splash Down, Thomas improvised with light, colour, rhythm, and an aerial perspective that interpreted her world in a new way. Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the first to have her art in the permanent collection of the White House on display in the Old Family Dining room, a highlight of the public tour. With dazzling paintings, the trailblazing Thomas certainly left her mark upon the history of modern art.

Book SynopsisMark Rothko was central to the development of postwar abstract painting in the United States. He is best known for the luminous works he made in the 1950s and 60s, which often feature soft-edged rectangular forms and broad, thin washes of colour. Rothko painted on paper and canvas, often at large scale. He felt that his paintings, big or small, could physically engage the viewer. These extraordinary works invite contemplation and spiritual communion. The National Gallery of Art is the largest public repository of Rothko`s art, with 1,100 works on paper and paintings on canvas and panel.
