The University of Chicago Press The Doctor Who Wasnt There
Book SynopsisThis gripping history shows how the electronic devices we use to access care influence the kind of care we receive. The Doctor Who Wasn't There traces the long arc of enthusiasm forand skepticism ofelectronic media in health and medicine. Over the past century, a series of new technologies promised to democratize access to healthcare. From the humble telephone to the connected smartphone, from FM radio to wireless wearables, from cable television to the electronic brains of networked mainframe computers: each new platform has promised a radical reformation of the healthcare landscape. With equal attention to the history of technology, the history of medicine, and the politics and economies of American healthcare, physician and historian Jeremy A. Greene explores the role that electronic media play, for better and for worse, in the past, present, and future of our health. Today's telehealth devices are far more sophisticated than the hook-and-ringer telephones of the 1920s, the radios that broadcasted health data in the 1940s, the closed-circuit televisions that enabled telemedicine in the 1950s, or the online systems that created electronic medical records in the 1960s. But the ethical, economic, and logistical concerns they raise are prefigured in the past, as are the gaps between what was promised and what was delivered. Each of these platforms also produced subtle transformations in health and healthcare that we have learned to forget, displaced by promises of ever newer forms of communication that took their place. Illuminating the social and technical contexts in which electronic medicine has been conceived and put into practice, Greene's history shows the urgent stakes, then and now, for those who would seek in new media the means to build a more equitable future for American healthcare.Trade Review"A fascinating story of the hype, achievements, and inevitable shortcomings of telehealth technology. . . . As Greene shows, science and technology alone will never be able to deliver a more just and equitable society." * Science *"This is one of Greene’s recurring themes: the greatest enthusiasm for novel medical technologies was often on the side of those who stood to gain financially from their widespread adoption. Doctors, among the supposed beneficiaries, were usually more gimlet-eyed, not only about the extra demands this new technology might place on them, but also about how it might interfere with the doctor–patient relationship." * Inside Story *"Greene's new book chronicles the evolution of telemedicine. He makes the case that at various stages along the way of that evolution, telemedicine was seen as a panacea that was going to expand access and diminish disparities in the delivery of health care, but those promises remain promises largely unfulfilled." * WYPR's Midday *"Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, physician Greene converted his clinic to telemedicine, with mixed results. He became curious about the medical history of communications technology such as the telephone, invented in 1876. The 1910 'telephonic stethoscope' was hailed for monitoring hearts, lungs and abdomens. Yet it was no use to the numerous patients who lacked a telephone even decades later. This vibrant, highly readable, but US-focused history describes how many other technologies tried 'to democratize access to healthcare.'" * Nature *"This volume offers a decades-long professional investigation of telemedicine, lately a victim of opportunistic post-COVID-19 lockdown days. Greene provides an enlightening, vivacious text written in an authoritative, fact-driven tone. The first chapter crushes the myth of electronic telemedicine as a twenty-first-century phenomenon, tracing its origins to the expansion of the telephone in the 1880s. Greene's overview of the procession of hype, gadgets, and prognostications about the death of the doctor-patient relationship that accompanied the introduction of Bell's invention establishes the historical pattern still followed by consumer (and sometimes military) remote technologies when retooled for medicine. From there, supported by coeval photographs that help rekindle the historical atmosphere, Greene guides readers through the birth of non-invasive—thus telemedical—diagnostic tools, the ever-present beeper, and closed-circuit television. The book next offers a definitive portrait of the endeavors of computer-based information and automation technologies in contemporary medicine, perhaps more familiar to today's readers. Greene concludes with insightful final reflections. Maybe groundbreaking innovations are always misunderstood in their own times, but the doomsday prophets' dystopian predictions dissipate as promises materialize and become familiar. The past in telemedicine naturally becomes the grotesque image of the present: this is the main lesson of Greene's text. Recommended." * Choice *"Greene crafts a brilliant history of modern American telehealth from case studies of the medical uses of telephones, televisions, and computers, the wireless heart monitor, the beeper, digitalization of health records and medical research, and automated health checkups. The book is an illuminating and accessible analysis of the ironies of modern medical technology that substantively contributes to, and blurs the boundaries of, methods and scholarship in the history of science, medicine, and technology." * Isis *"In seven chapters, the book recounts the twists and turns of how different media of care lined up to revolutionize medicine but failed or ended up shaping medical practice in more unexpected ways. . . . Greene’s book invites a deeper and broader reflection on how we might begin to break out of this cyclical pattern. It encourages policy makers, health practitioners and technologists, but also social scientists, to consider their role in imagining and making the next ‘revolutionary’ technology. In doing so, we can challenge our own assumptions, biases and limitations concerning how we remember and forget the promises and failures associated with these technologies. Greene's work thus serves as a catalyst for self-reflection and offers valuable insights into charting a new path forward." * Metascience *"The Doctor Who Wasn’t There provides an important amplification of our view of technologies as limiting rather than liberating. . . . anyone concerned with health care in the present—within and beyond academia—has much to ponder in light of this book." * Technology and Culture *“Jeremy A. Greene is the foremost medical griot of our time! In this extraordinary book, Greene combines his skills as an historian, medical practitioner, and gifted storyteller, probing the long arc of medical innovation with exquisite detail without losing sight of the urgent and overarching stakes that plague healthcare today. Wide-ranging and deeply researched, The Doctor Who Wasn’t There is a history of forgetfulness when it comes to the many tech fixes that have promised better care, more profit, and greater equity in medicine. From telephones to artificial intelligence, this book reveals how what was once considered subversive becomes mundane and taken for granted. But with Greene as our guide, we see that this process is not neutral or inevitable. Instead, this book reveals how the media of medical care are shaped by powerful and often competing interests, which we can and should question. The Doctor Who Wasn’t There is a powerful reminder that tech-driven dreams of democratizing healthcare will come to naught if we do not invest in the social and political foundations of democracy itself.” -- Ruha Benjamin, Princeton University, author of "Race after Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code" and "Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want"“Greene’s book brilliantly examines the promises and pitfalls of telemedicine for health access, equity, and the making of new digital divides. A masterful study of past, present, and future medicine, and of how communications technologies that have offered so much for equalizing health—radio, television, and computerization—have also run into logistical challenges, economic constraints, ethical worries, failures of political will, and convenient forgetting on the road to promised health equity. A superb analysis, Greene’s book will be widely read. It is packed with trenchant insights on new communications technologies, the promise and reality of how they shape healthcare, and the challenge of marrying such innovations to the promise of health equity.” -- Keith Wailoo, Princeton University, author of "Pushing Cool: Big Tobacco, Racial Marketing, and the Untold Story of the Menthol Cigarette"“Beautifully written and deeply researched, this nuanced exploration of the promises and disappointments attached to once-new electronic media in medicine ranging from the telephone to the computer is also a rich framework for critical reflection on the present and future. A timely tour de force.” -- John Harley Warner, Avalon Professor of the History of Medicine, Yale University“With medical media, like media in general, it is sometimes hard to tell poison from cure. Greene’s pathbreaking tale of technological innovation embedded within wicked moral and political problems shows how dreams and schemes of treatment at a distance have driven media history. The book’s sparkling case studies explode conventional wisdom about the telephone, radio, television, and computer. Doctors and their media of care can now take their rightful place as chief players in the cultural history of communication.” -- John Durham Peters, Yale University, author of "The Marvelous Clouds: Toward a Philosophy of Elemental Media"Table of ContentsIntroduction Disrupting Care, Continuing Care 1. The University of Chicago Press The Eyes of the World Mining the Digital Age in
Book SynopsisTrade Review"The Eyes of the World is a groundbreaking, brilliantly written book about Congo’s place in the global economy. Smith places artisanal miners of coltan at the center of his study. Contrary to most popular views of the Congolese as victims of global corporations and brutal state authorities, miners recognize their value as experienced workers who often can protect their interests. . . . Smith deftly weaves insights drawn from an array of anthropological theory with gripping, moving case studies of individual miners and mining sites. . . . Strikingly, Smith shows how Western efforts to crack down on 'blood diamonds' end up, in actuality, to be a tool to weaken the leverage of artisanal miners and allow wily state authorities to cash in on their ability to selectively enforce their will on Congolese workers. This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the Democratic Republic of Congo today." * Choice *"Chock-full of fascinating details on the people and communities that have lived off mining in the chaos of the wars in Congo." * Foreign Affairs *"Beautiful and evocative. . . . Smith produces one of the richest and most thought-provoking ethnographies I have read in a very long time. The Eyes of the World is likely to become an anthropological classic." * Reviews in Anthropology *“Blood minerals: a global cause ‘intended to do one thing, but under the surface, invisible to many, . . . doing something else.’ Smith offers a whirlwind of research on the varied actors who extract coltan—often in the ruins of colonial concessions—making it available to international markets. The Eyes of the World skillfully cuts through metropolitan stereotypes, drawing readers instead into the astounding vortex of the mines.” * Anna Tsing, coeditor of Feral Atlas: The More-than-Human Anthropocene *“A riveting, wonderful potpourri of story, theory, and history. The Eyes of the World hugs closely to people’s lives, words, and theories, vividly unpacking multiple dimensions of movement in the mining of those digital minerals that end up in global devices. One of the most brilliant, important, and utterly teachable ethnographies to appear on Congo in a long time.” * Nancy Rose Hunt, author of A Nervous State: Violence, Reveries, and Remedies in Colonial Congo *“Smith gives us a rare glimpse into the complex dynamics of otherwise largely invisible local worlds that do nonetheless matter on a global scale. A great observer and talented narrator, he convincingly argues how, in the vortex of these Congolese mining worlds, destructive forms of extra-statecraft undid existing socio-cultural assemblages while generating the basis for new transformative orders.” * Filip De Boeck, author of Suturing the City: Living Together in Congo’s Urban Worlds *"Smith’s book is bound to become a classic in the anthropology of mining and the conflict minerals literature. . . . This book is an absolute joy to read and sets the bar very high for future researchers working on the issue of conflict minerals. This is mining anthropology at its very best." * The Journal of Development Studies *Table of ContentsPart One: Orientations Prologue: An Introduction to the Personal, Methodological, and Spatiotemporal Scales of the Project 1. St Augustine's Press My Early Life
Book SynopsisInMy Early Life,Churchill describes hiseducation and hisexperience in four wars on three continents as a young officer and newspaper correspondent, including his cavalry charge against the Dervishes at Omdurman in the Sudan and his capture and escape from a Boer prisoner of war camp in South Africa. He explains how he wrote his first five books and launched his political career before taking his seat in the House of Commons at twenty-six.By the time he wrote this book, theFirst World War had ushered in many changes, not all of them good, and Churchill perceived alow spirit in his countrymen. He thinks a time may come when young Britons will need more love of adventure, and adventure for adventure's sake, which his early life exemplifies, and he offers the new generation his own story of youthful endeavour to encourage and rekindle the spirited part of their souls. Giving an account of his own life is a summons to young people who are drifting in an eddy of mass effects to surmount their fear of death, aiming to stir up unselfish endeavor in them. Lest anyone mistake his intention in writing the book, he dedicates it TO A NEW GENERATION. Thisedition ofMy Early Lifeincludes The Dream. Thisshortstory was first mooted at a family meal at Churchill's country house at Chartwell in late November 1947, in the company of Winston and Clementine Churchill's children, Diana and Randolph. Diana asked her father, if he could conjure up anyone, who would fill an empty chair in the dining room. He replied that he would choose to dine with his own father, Lord Randolph Churchill, who had died more than fifty years earlier. He went on to describe a story he meant to write, based on a dream in which Lord Randolph returned to his son's painting studio to inquire what had occurred in the intervening half-century. Encouraged by his family's enthusiasm, Churchill wrote the story soon afterwards but, after revising it, set it aside to be published later. This Private Article, as he styled it, first appeared a year after his death in theSunday Telegraph, January 30, 1966, which described it as his last storylocked away in a box for yearsnow published for the first time. By permission of Churchill College, it is reprinted, with explanatory editorial notes, as a fitting epilogue to Churchill's autobiography.

Island Press Standing for Nature
Book SynopsisRights of Nature laws are becoming a vital tool for addressing environmental injustice. From New Zealand and India to Ecuador and Bolivia, advocates have successfully secured legal rights for rivers, forests, and mountains. Granting rights to nature has the potential to expand environmental protections, strengthen indigenous rights, promote sustainable development, and alter how humans relate to nature. Despite these promises, rights of Nature laws have met with greater resistance in some countries than in others. Standing for Nature offers advocates a blueprint for creating, implementing, and safeguarding rights of Nature laws. This book looks closely at four examples?New Zealand, Colombia, Bangladesh, and the United States?to explain why these laws have been successful in some places but not others. Through this comparative exploration, the authors highlight key strategies for advancing rights of Nature laws in the United States and around the world. These lessons include an examination of different legal traditions to better understand which is the best form of law?judicial, legislative, or regulatory?for advocates to target; how to ensure effective implementation once a law is passed; and how to shift communal perspectives on the human-Nature relationship for better implementation and enforcement. This book is essential for environmental lawyers, policy makers, and advocates interested in gaining new knowledge and tools for championing rights of Nature laws in their own communities.
