Manohar Publishers and Distributors History of Kannur and North Malabar
Book SynopsisThe present work explores the historical origins and early development of Cananore and North Kerala region, till they were annexed by the British in 1792, when the said place became part of Madras Presidency under the British administration. It traces back its journey from the ancient Sangam age, independent Kingdom of Nannan to the rule of the Mushika dynasty during the medieval period, and it ends with the emergence of the Kolatiri dynasty that succeeded the Mushikas. This book places a particular emphasis on the Arakkal family, a branch that originated from the Kolatiris. The Arakkals controlled the large tracts of land including the Laccadive Islands. As Dutch expended its influence in Malabar, at the expense of the Portuguese, the Arakkals successfully asserted their independence in Malabar. The arrival of the Mysore Sultans helped the Arakkals to shake off the domination of the Kolatiris.

HarperCollins Publishers Inc A Voyage for Madmen

One of the most gripping sea stories I have ever read.” — Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect StormIn the tradition of Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm, comes a breathtaking oceanic adventure about an obsessive desire to test the limits of human endurance. In 1968 nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held and never before completed: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. HarperCollins A Short History of Reconstruction Updated Edition
Book SynopsisFrom the “preeminent historian of Reconstruction” (New York Times Book Review), an updated abridged edition of Reconstruction, the prize-winning classic work on the post-Civil War period which shaped modern America.Reconstruction chronicles the way in which Americans—black and white—responded to the unprecedented changes unleashed by the war and the end of slavery. It addresses the quest of emancipated slaves’ searching for economic autonomy and equal citizenship, and describes the remodeling of Southern society; the evolution of racial attitudes and patterns of race relations; and the emergence of a national state possessing vastly expanded authority and one committed, for a time, to the principle of equal rights for all Americans. This “masterful treatment of one of the most complex periods of American history” (New Republic) remains the standard work on the wrenching p

Emerald Publishing Limited The Methods and Materials of Demography
Book SynopsisPresents an exposition of the methods used by technicians and research workers in dealing with demographic data. This book is concerned with the ways data on population are gathered, classified, and treated to produce tabulations and various summarizing measures that reveal the significant aspects of the composition and dynamics of populations.Trade Review"When it was originally published... The Methods and Materials of Demography... systematically delineated and illustrated the practice of applying demographic data to understand modern societal trends. Original author Jacob S. Siegel has now teamed with a new collaborator, David. A. Swanson, in updating the definitive demography bible. The Second Edition reflects changes in both technology and the global landscape in the 30 years that have passed, and now includes a chapter on health demography. Its sections outline the logical architecture of the science and its presentation and the tone remains didactic and simple, assuming little prior technical knowledge." AMERICAN DEMOGRAPHICS "Whenever one discusses demographic methodology, whether in this corner of the globe or with colleagues internationally, the tendency is to reach for the authoritative text and that is always Shryock and Siegel. It covers most methodological questions from those one confronts in undergraduate teaching through to much more advanced work. That is why the demographic community will welcome this revised version. I feel that the field of population studies owes a debt to the team that have taken the initiative of updating this classic." Ian Pool, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand "The second edition of "M&M," the red bible of demographic methods, is long overdue and will be valued as much as, if not more so than, the first edition. All demographers and demography students will have to have this book, which is current, timely, accessible, and chock full of all the demographic methods, data sources, and references needed to do demography." Dudley L. Poston, Jr., Texas A&M University "This book is an indispensable reference tool for professional and academic scholars in population studies, particularly for those who have interest in description, analysis and interpretation of major population trends, offering valuable insights to anyone involved in studying, teaching and working on demographic issues. The new edition has been updated and covers a wide range of topics, remaining a key text for students as well as professionals who need to manage demographic concepts and measures, phenomena and methods. It is essential reading for demographers as well as geographers, economists, sociologists, and health scientists." MR - University of Notre Dame Press Augustine and the Bible
Book SynopsisBased on the acclaimed French volume Saint Augustin et la Bible, this translation with additional selections honors the beautifully wrought monument to the scholarly research of Anne-Marie la Bonnardière and her colleagues. Editor Pamela Bright offers the first English-language edition of this volume in the highly regarded series Bible de Tous les Temps, published by Beauchesne Editeur in Paris. This volume presents the findings of eminent scholars on the Bible in Augustine's letters, in his preaching, in polemics, in the City of God, and as a source for Christian ethics, following the chronological order of Augustine's works from the mid-380s to just before his death in 430. Part I examines what can be known of the stages of Augustine's encounter with the biblical texts and which texts were formative for him before he assumed his ministry of the Word. Part II is devoted to a very different kind of encounterAugustine's grappling with the hermeneutical method originatinTrade Review“The University of Notre Dame Press has rendered a real service in making available this fine state-of-the-art collection of essays, which is at the same time accessible to the non-specialist and the beginning student.” —Journal of Early Christian Studies“Bright’s translation is a beautifully wrought literary and theological monument to the scholarly research of Anne-Marie la Bonnardière and her colleagues. Augustine and the Bible is an invaluable addition to Augustinian and biblical studies.” —Midwest Book Review“This English translation is to be commended.” —Journal for the Study of the Old Testament

MR - University of Notre Dame Press Body and Mind
Book SynopsisWidely used in philosophy courses, this succinct study explores the problem of determining the relation between the body and mind. In that philosophy seeks to explain man's place and action in nature, Campbell asserts that our assessment of the body-mind problem affects our perspectives on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and the natural sciences.Trade Review“[This] book is intended as an introduction to the mind-body problem, and it fulfills this task admirably. It is written clearly . . . but, most importantly, the author manages to communicate some of the intellectual excitement of doing philosophy. If anything, it is this sort of work that should be the responsible answer to the clamor for ‘relevance.’” —Dialogue: Canadian Philosophical Review/Revue canadienne de philosophie

Book SynopsisFreedom and Creation in Three Traditions is a work of philosophical theology that brings together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim perspectives on the complex questions surrounding divine and human freedom.Trade Review"Philosophical theology is not an easy subject, but in this book Burrell manages to make it as accessible as it will ever be. He himself controls the literature and language of all three traditions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—and he appends an index of key Arabic terms used." —Journal of Ecumenical Studies"In his philosophically acute analyses, Burrell moves smoothly from tradition to tradition ... in order to show how in all three traditions one can discuss creation and freedom and why this discussion will be mutually enlightening and corrective." —The Journal of Religion"Among the most gratifying of Burrell's contributions here is his continuing insistence that we in our century take the relevant Jewish and Islamic sources and themes at least as seriously as Aquinas did in his." —Theological Studies

This work provides an overview of this remote civilization, the uniqueness of the region's geography and climate, and major events that shaped its history.Trade Review“[A] much needed contribution to the ancient Near East for the English-speaking world. What Jean-François Breton has produced is an impressive introductory account of our current state of knowledge of Yemen's history in the first millennium B.C. that is complementary to studies of the ancient Orient, and that will provide a more complete picture. . . . [H]is account is fresh, lively, and lucid. Breton is readable and reliable, and as fine an introduction to South Arabia as is now available in English.” —The Historian

MR - University of Notre Dame Press The Sword of the Lord Military Chaplains from the First to the TwentyFirst Century Critical Problems in History
Book SynopsisThe scope of this work reveals the fact that the military chaplaincy has existed in a recognizable form for more than 1600 years. Contributors analyze specific historical moments in its development, beginning in antiquity and progressing through the Crusades, the English Civil War, the American Civil War, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War.Trade Review“The Sword of the Lord merits a place on the bookshelf for its extensive mapping out of the fairly confined terrain of chaplain studies. The twelve essays gathered here … are a welcome addition to this too often neglected aspect of military and religious history. It is a valuable addition to the literature on those figures who stand at a unique intersection of religion and the military.” —Journal of Military History"This is an original, informative and thought-provoking volume that will be of as much interest to scholars in the field of war studies as to those in religious studies." —Journal of Ecclesiastical History"Doris Bergen's edited collection of essays, The Sword of the Lord: Military Chaplains from the First to the Twenty-First Century, is a refreshing reminder of the value of questions well asked—What has changed across two millennia of chaplaincy? What has remained the same?—and answers thoughtfully formulated." —The Journal of Religion“The book is a good introduction to the history and basic challenges of military chaplaincy. The chapters range across historical periods as distinct as the Roman Empire, the Crusades, the American Civil War, both World Wars and Vietnam. It will be of interest to chaplains and military historians, who are its principal audience.” —Anglican Theological Review“…a very informative and readable history of military chaplains. It’s a book that all who are interested in reflecting on the nature and purpose of ministry would benefit from.” —Contact"...a riveting account.... Recommended." —CHOICE“This volume is given great force by two chapters written by chaplains sharing their experiences….” —The Catholic Historical Review"This book is recommended for Catholic libraries, for historians, for theologians who are interested in questions of just war and support for our troops, and for general readers." —Catholic Library World“These well-written essays fill a gap in our understanding of the roles played by military chaplains through the ages. This book will prove valuable to general readers, historians, and theologians interested in the interplay between religion, politics, and war.” —History: Review of New Books“... a useful introductory survey of the history of military chaplaincy in Europe and North America from antiquity to the present day. Doris Bergen has assembled a team of contributors who have written stimulating essays that go some way towards illuminating the history of this venerable and controversial ministry.” —Theology
