De Gruyter ARCHISTORIES
Book SynopsisToday, artists set about a contemplation of architecture with a heightened ecological and social interest. Their works often reflect in a playful and humorous way as they scrutinize living spaces and lifestyles. The exhibition publication brings together around 100 works from five centuries: Paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures from the collection are juxtaposed with video works and installations by contemporary artists. They deal with architecture as anthropological self-description, as a stage or an archive of social, economic and political conditions, collective and individual history, and utopias. Architecture reflected in art from 17th to 21st century Exhibition, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, planned for the beginning of 2025 Artists among others: Franz Ackermann, Robert Delaunay, Otto Dix, Lyonel Feininger, Günther Förg, Vincent van Gogh, Alexander Kanoldt, Karl Hubbuch, Brabara Klemm, Dionisio González, Niclas Goldbach, Axel Lieber, Julia Oschatz, Judith Hopf, Isa Melsheimer, Nicolas Daubanes, Alain Delorme, Rebecca Ann Tess, Stephen Craig, Samuel Beckett und Henrique Oliveira, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Sean Scully

De Gruyter Between Figure and Ground
Book SynopsisThe terms figure and ground became fundamental to art-historical analysis and writing over the course of the twentieth century. But is this dichotomy suited to describe premodern art and artifacts? In Between Figure and Ground: Seeing in Premodernity, essays by Claudia Blümle, Gottfried Boehm, Péter Bokody, Beate Fricke, Bruno Haas, David Young Kim, Aden Kumler, Christopher Lakey, Karin Leonhard, Jürgen Müller, Veronica Peselmann, Christoph Poetsch, Raphael Rosenberg, Tom Steinert, Nicola Suthor, Noa Turel, and Saskia Quené call into question long-standing habits of seeing and understanding figure-ground relations, expand art-historical vocabularies, and productively challenge anachronistic attachments to modernist paradigms. Offering new approaches and methodological reflections from art history and theory, Bildwissenschaft, and art historiography, this volume provides stimulating answers to the question: What can be seen and described between premodern figures and grounds? Figure and ground in the context of art-historical analysis Transcends binary structures seeing and understanding figure-ground relations

De Gruyter Duett der Moderne Duet of Modernism
Book SynopsisArt meets architecture: Bettina Cohnen brings together East and West as well as combining a photo essay and photographic art in 'Duett der Moderne'. In her photo series, she shows people in the famous post-war Berlin neighbourhoods of Karl-Marx-Allee and the Hansaviertel in their surroundings, with all their complexity and intimacy. At the same time, she traces the idea behind the respective architecture. After all, the essential concern of modernist architects was good and affordable housing for everyone. This applied as from 1950 to the planning of the Sozialistische Straße' and later Karl-Marx-Allee in East Berlin as well as to the new Hansaviertel in West Berlin in 1957. Today, the rivalry between the systems has turned into a duet: a duo uniting East and West. The catalogue for the exhibition 'Duett der Moderne' combines photo essay and photographic art, the mediation of architectural culture, and the living history of monuments. Stories behind the facades: Photo artist Bettina Cohnen shows people in Berlin's East and West neighbourhoods, and sets architecture and history into a new artistic context Exhibition: Mitte Museum, Berlin, February to September 2025

JOVIS Verlag Mausebunker and Hygieneinstitut
Book SynopsisThreatened with demolition and celebrated as icons of brutalism, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska's Mäusebunker and the former Hygieneinstitut designed by Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel in Steglitz, Berlin, form a unique ensemble of exceptional buildings. This volume takes as its subjects the different architectural principles underlying the two facing buildings, the intense debate concerning their preservation and reuse, and their economic and cultural value. The questions now posed by these concrete structures and the impact of their designs and power are explored using the architects' historical design documents as well as artistic contributions. Photographs by Kay Fingerle offer a view of the buildings' interiors rarely afforded to the public.

JOVIS Verlag Peripheral Centralities
Book SynopsisThe majority of the peripheries and in-between spaces of the planet's urban regions are living spaces and working landscapes. Despite this, we understand little about the centrality of urban peripheries as the sites and spaces for some of the most imaginative, anticipatory, and purposeful instances of urbanism. This volume demonstrates the centrality of urban peripheries in all their variety with a view to reworking urban, architectural, design, planning, infrastructural, sociological, ecological, and geographical theory from the outside in. The book also examines the relationships of these new centralities to the metabolisms, assemblages, and urban political ecologies beyond the built and imagined materialities of their immediate situation. Features pioneering writing and illustrations on designed centralities in urban peripheries Presents a range of international examples covering most continents Offers novel theoretical interpretations from across the built environment disciplines

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Technology in Russian Strategic Culture
Book SynopsisA history of military-technological innovation in Russia. This book traces the dynamics of military-technological innovation in Russia over the last hundred and fifty years, particularly focusing on three distinct periods: the introduction of rifled breech-loading weapons in Imperial Russia in the nineteenth century, the invention of nuclear weapons in the Soviet Union in the twentieth century, and the development of precision-guided weapons in post-Soviet Russia in the twenty-first century. The analysis relies extensively on primary data obtained from Russian archives, complemented by a series of expert interviews, and deciphers Russia's distinct strategic cultural approach to military-technological innovation.

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Lectures on Quantum Field Theory
Book SynopsisTwenty years of lectures on the quantum world by an esteemed physicist. This book covers the material of the two-semester quantum field theory course that Jirí Horejší has taught at Charles University and Czech Technical University in Prague for over two decades. In the individual chapters, one may find the discussion of selected topics in relativistic quantum mechanics and relativistic quantum field theory; the dominant theme is quantum electrodynamics. The technique of Feynman diagrams is described in detail, along with methods of regularization and renormalization, including some basic applications. The selection of topics presented in the book is intended to provide the reader with the technical skills necessary for the subsequent study of theoretical particle physics. In keeping with the author's typical lecture style, the text contains many detailed explicit calculations to a degree not entirely typical in other available sources. With primary appeal for university students specializing in theoretical physics or nuclear and particle physics, it may also be useful for any scientifically minded reader seriously interested in the foundations of modern physics.

Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw A Form of Friendship
Book SynopsisA subjective, candid, multi-vocal story about the creation of the building of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Warsaw's Parade Square, where the MSN building designed by Thomas Phifer stands, is a unique place and a meaningful context for the Museum. The square, over which the Palace of Culture looms, was Poland's center of communist state life. Later, it was the arena for the formation of Polish capitalism, with market stalls and gleaming office towers sprouting up around it. This is where fierce land reprivatization disputes erupted, and where newcomers to Warsaw first arrive on trains and busesincluding refugees from Ukraine under attack from Russia. Michal Murawski interweaves these threads, pinpointing the spatio-temporal and infrastructural nexus in which the new Museum exists, and proposing an institutional ideology to emerge from it. The author's tour-de-force essay introduces a narrative, further explored through conversations with experts in art, architecture, and activism. A timeline summarizes the complex history of MSN's new building. The guide throughout this story is Alina Szapocznikow's 1954 sculpture Friendship, which for almost forty years welcomed those entering the Palace, only to later disappear from view, and now returns, albeit in an amputated form, to the squarein the Museum of Modern Art.
