Nova Science Publishers Inc Advances in Contemporary Sport Psychology
Book SynopsisI welcome you to the 2014 accepted writings of Athletic Insight. The ordering of papers does not match with the sequence in which they were released. Rather, I chose to do something a little different in this, my final year as Editor and Chief of Athletic Insight. What the reader finds in this most recent compendium of Athletic Insight writings is nineteen papers, beginning with the most recently accepted as parts of the Autumn, 2014 edition of the journal. Afterward, I reordered the remaining accepted papers so that they made the whole of the book more coherent to the readership. Briefly, there were a significant number of papers submitted to Athletic Insight from India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Sweden, Norway, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Several of these papers were screened out even before they were sent out to editorial board members or guest reviewers for a thorough peer evaluation. Those that were deemed acceptable were then farmed out to scholars well versed in the various topics submitted to the journal. The topics submitted spanned coaching, motor learning and sport psychology intersections, youth sport, elite amateur sport, professional sport, cultural sport psychology, and various aspects relating to exercise psychology. This diversity in subject matter confirms what I have always known that Athletic Insight is inclusive and open to a breadth of topics, critical scholarship, and emerging and contentious issues pertinent today within the sphere of sport and exercise psychology.

BenBella Books Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf
Book SynopsisFor as long as golf has existed, the game’s greatest players and instructors have lauded the importance of mental resilience. However, while golfing equipment and course strategy have evolved over time, the field of golf psychology has not kept pace. Many outdated, unscientific notions remain widespread, despite the fact that they actually lead to repetitive, harmful patterns that impair golfer gameplay and create mental barriers to success. In Golf Beneath the Surface, performance consultant Dr. Raymond Prior expertly debunks these “surface-level” psychology myths and explains psychological predictors that encourage long-term growth and skilful performance under pressure. Backed by rigorously researched neuroscience and psychology, and drawing on years of experience working with some of the world’s best players, Dr. Prior shares fresh, practical insights into how golfers think, train, and play, both on and off the course. With a customizable experience that places the reader’s own psychology front and centre, this book breaks down: • how the brain’s design impacts their performance, • how to interact with their own thoughts and emotions and train awareness for the present moment, • how to understand and effectively change unproductive habits, • the critical importance of their psychological framework and how to shape beliefs that cultivate and support steady confidence. Accessible and entertaining, Golf Beneath the Surface challenges the status quo and brings a long-overdue update to modern performance psychology.

Ebury Publishing The Captain Class: The Hidden Force Behind the
Book SynopsisThe secret to winning is not what you think it is. It’s not the coach. It’s not the star. It’s not money. It’s not a strategy. It’s something else entirely. The founding editor of The Wall Street Journal’s sports section profiles the greatest teams in history and identifies the counterintuitive leadership qualities of the unconventional men and women who drove them to succeed. Fuelled by a lifetime of sports spectating, twenty years of reporting, and a decade of painstaking research, The Captain Class is not just a book on sports; it is the key to how successful teams are built and how transformative leadership is born. Several years ago, Sam Walker set out to answer the most hotly debated sports question: what are the greatest teams of all time? He devised a formula, applied it to thousands of teams and listed the 16 most dominant teams ever across all sports, from the English Premiere League to the NFL. But what did these freak teams have in common? As Walker dug deeper, a pattern emerged: all teams were driven by a singular type of leader, a captain, but not one you might expect. They were unorthodox outliers – awkward and disagreeable, marginally skilled, poor communicators, rule breaking and rather than pursuing fame, hid in the shadows. Captains, in short, who challenge your assumption of what inspired leadership looks like. Covering world renowned teams like Barcelona, Brazil, the All Blacks and the New York Yankees to lesser known successes of Soviet ice hockey or French handball, The Captain Class unveils the seven key qualities that make an exceptional leader. Drawing on original interviews with athletes, coaches and managers from two dozen countries, Walker questions if great captains are made or born, why teams pick the wrong captain and how the value of the captain can be revived.Trade ReviewA remarkable book, one that articulates much of what you feel about great teams but have perhaps been afraid to express… -- David Walsh * The Sunday Times *One of THE sports books that I think will soon be in every manager’s office. -- Matt Williams * Simon Mayo Show, BBC Radio 2 *A fascinating new body of research about greatness in a sports team. -- Jeremy Wilson * Daily Telegraph *In The Captain Class, Sam Walker gives us important and original insights into the mysterious ingredients of transformative leadership. A stunning mix of research and narrative. -- Susan Cain, No.1 New York Times bestselling author of QuietWonderfully strange and absorbing… Informative, persuasive and great fun for anyone not only with a passing interest in sport but in mankind. -- Keith Duggan * Irish Times *Over the years, many books have promised to reveal the secret of building successful teams. But now Sam Walker has actually gone and done it. An idea-driven, myth-busting gem of a book. -- Dan Coyle, New York Times bestselling author of The Talent Code and The Secret RaceSam Walker has unlocked one of sports’ greatest mysteries. The Captain Class is one of the most surprising, best-written—and fun—sports books published in recent years. -- Don Van Natta Jr, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling authorThe Captain Class is a brilliant hybrid: one part detective story and one part leadership book, dedicated to a fascinating mystery: What sets apart the greatest teams of all time? I couldn't put it down. -- Dan Heath, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Made to StickWell-researched, wildly entertaining, and thought-provoking. In The Captain Class, Sam Walker presents compelling narratives about the secret ingredient to the greatest teams of all time – and quickly has the reader reexamining long-held beliefs about leadership and the glue that binds winning teams together. -- Theo Epstein, president of baseball operations for the Chicago CubsThe examples in Walker's book are striking. There’s a temptation for captains to conform to the accepted stereotype of what a heroic leader should be. Walker’s book utterly—and rightly in my view—dispels that notion. The leaders he analyses were the opposite of what you might imagine a leader to be. -- Mike Atherton, former captain, England cricket teamThe most fabulous book on freakish sporting success and leadership traits commonly shared across the greatest teams of all time. I thoroughly recommend it. -- Rich Buchanan, Performance Director, Swansea City FC

Book Synopsis'Powerful and profound.' - Matthew Syed'Anyone interested in motivation should read this book and think deeply.’ - Margaret Heffernan ***Selected as one of the Financial Times's Best Business Books of 2020******THE PEOPLE' BOOK PRIZE 2022/23 SHORTLISTED TITLE***In this fascinating examination of our widespread obsession with winning, Cath Bishop draws on her personal experience of high-performance environments to trace the idea of winning through history, language and thought to explore how it has come to be a defining concept in fields from sport to business, from politics to education. Faced with the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, Cath offers a new, broader approach – The Long Win. Cath competed as a rower at three Olympic Games, becoming the first British woman to win the World Championships and an Olympic medal in the coxless pairs event. As a senior diplomat, Cath worked on policy and negotiations, specializing in stabilization policy for conflict-affected parts of the world. In business, Cath has acted as a coach and consultant, advising on team and leadership development and organizational culture, and teaches on the Executive Education Faculty at the Judge Business School, Cambridge University. In this book she brings that extraordinary mix of experience to examine what winning has come to mean to society and to us as individuals and offers a fresh perspective on how we might redefine success – personal and professional - for the longer-term.‘Looking at life from a different point of view is a rare skill. Built on in-depth research and broad experience as well as original thought, this book will change your outlook on everything.’ - Clare Balding OBE‘This book is so relevant, timely and exciting for any person or organization wanting to investigate what success means to them. It couldn’t be a more relevant book right now and Cath’s exceptional ability in so many areas of life make it a gripping read with a lot of key takeaways whatever your area of interest. I wish every leader could immediately read this book as the world would be a better place if they did!’ - Goldie Sayers, Olympic Medallist in the Javelin, Coach‘I love this book. It is a must-read for educators, business executives, policy makers, politicians and indeed anyone who wants to understand why we need a new narrative around winning and success. We need a lot more Long-Win Thinking in our homes, businesses and institutions and Cath’s book is the place to go to find out why – and how we get there.’ - Dame Helena MorrisseyTrade ReviewI thoroughly recommend this book. It shows our unhelpful obsession with a narrow definition of winning and the devastating consequences that obsession can have. It’s very thought-provoking: lots of questions which got me mulling for days. Lastly it gives a helpful alternative- I especially liked the focus on collaboration. This is both heartfelt and thoughtful- vulnerable self disclosure is twinned with deep thinking and significant research. * Amazon.co.uk *In this book Cath Bishop insightfully questions some of these assumptions in society - in sport, business, education and other domains. It's a refreshing perspective that may facilitate a happier and healthier pursuit of one's goals, and may even help make the journey (or the long win) a fulfilling goal in itself. Would highly recommend this book. * amazon.co.uk *Cath has written a wonderful book - packed with insight from her first hand knowledge and beautifully written too. This is an important contribution to the growing movement towards organisations fit for humans. Cath gives me more hope that, although it'll be a long win, we'll get there. * Amazon.co.uk *This book really does force you to re-think what you have been told throughout life, it offers a different way of thinking about competing, whether that's in sports or at work or anywhere else for that matter. It's a must read because this way of thinking (in my opinion) will 100% produce more well-rounded people who will better themselves and others they come into contact with in a variety of fields. * Amazon *Beginning with the discomfort between the language of winning and the complexity of the world right now, Cath Bishop details how the mentality of winning at all costs results in rivalry, selfishness and arrogance, attributes which are unwelcome in both personal and professional spheres. She describes the toxic cultures rooted in winning in the short term, from sport to financial services. She also talks about the problems it can create in education where the focus is often on marks rather than learning, killing the joy of sport for children and more seriously, undermining their self-confidence. Winning is not easily compatible with cooperation and collaboration which are traits employers seek and which make life more rewarding for all. Profile Books Ltd Natural Born Heroes: The Lost Secrets of Strength
Book SynopsisAS HEARD ON THE CHRIS EVANS BREAKFAST SHOW - "It's not just for runners. It's for life! It's a great story." When Chris McDougall stumbled across the story of Churchill's 'dirty tricksters', a motley crew of English poets and academics who helped resist the Nazi invasion of Crete, he knew he was on the track of something special. To beat the odds, the tricksters-starving, aging, outnumbered-tapped into an ancient style of fitness: the lost art of heroism. They listened to their instincts, replaced calories with stored bodily fat and used their fascia, the network of tissue which criss-crosses the body, to catapult themselves to superhuman strength and endurance. Soon McDougall was in the middle of a modern fitness revolution taking place everywhere from Parisian parkour routes to state-of-the-art laboratories, and based on the know-how of Shanghai street-fighters and Wild West gunslingers. Just as Born to Run got runners off the treadmill and into nature, Natural Born Heroes will inspire casual athletes to dump the gym membership for cross-training, mud runs and free-running.Trade Review'A fascinating edifice of ideas ... Taylor & Francis Ltd Sport Psychology: Performance Enhancement,
Book SynopsisSport Psychology, 2nd Edition provides a synthesis of the major topics in sport psychology with an applied focus and an emphasis on achieving optimal performance. After exploring the history of sport psychology, human motivation, and the role of exercise, there are three main sections to the text: Performance Enhancement, Performance Inhibition, and Individuals and Teams. The first of these sections covers topics such as anxiety, routines, mental imagery, self-talk, enhancing concentration, relaxation, goals, and self-confidence. The section on Performance Inhibition includes chapters on choking under pressure, self-handicapping, procrastination, perfectionism, helplessness, substance abuse, and disruptive personality factors. While much of the information presented is universally applicable, individual differences based on gender, ethnicity, age, and motivation are emphasized in the concluding section on Individuals and Teams.Throughout, there are case studies of well-known athletes from a variety of sports to illustrate topics that are being explored.Trade Review"The book is thorough with a very large range of topics covered, some being particularly unique compared to other textbooks. There seems to be an increasing awareness within the field of factors that inhibit performance, rather than a sole focus on performance enhancement, and this new edition captures this shift rather well. Within the performance enhancement chapters that do have some overlap with other textbooks, Professor Gallucci conveys a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding these topics, which is a welcome advancement within the field." - Ian Taylor, Loughborough University, UK, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Science"I am very surprised and pleased with the way sport psychology is presented in this book. It appears to be a very thorough from an academic standpoint, while at the same time keeping an overall focus on what’s relevant to practice. I very much appreciate that this book has a thought-out format for how topics interact and should be addressed in practice. Most books use chapter titles that are issues, constructs, interventions with no organizing philosophy for their inclusion or order. This is a sport psychology book that truly relates to performance." - Steve Portenga, University of Denver, Sport and Performance Psychology"This is a well-written book that will be of interest to athletes and coaches interested in improving their understanding of sport psychology and their own psychological approach to sport. Current theory and research in the psychological factors are discussed, and these are explained in a very readable manner." - Rafael E. Romo, Texas A&M International University, Curriculum and Pedagogy"I think the material is great; the chapters are thorough, I like the progression in many of the chapters from general information to more sport-specific examples. There is a good balance of theory to application and strong examples to help students see these concepts 'in action' which students often find interesting and helpful." - Professor Karlene Sugarman, Sport Psychology Program, John F. University College Dublin Press Fighting Fans: Football Hooliganism as a World
Book SynopsisSoccer hooliganism has long been regarded as primarily an English - or perhaps British - disease, yet in fact it has long existed as a social problem worldwide. In this volume, experts consider hooliganism in 14 countries - eight soccer-playing countries in Europe (including Ireland), two in South America, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and, in the case of North America, a chapter on general sports-related violence. Why have problems of hooliganism from the outset become more regularly attached to soccer than to other global sports? The social roots and forms of soccer hooliganism are explored in the various countries. Do racial, religious or social class cleavages play a part in developing and fostering football violence? What part do the media play? Is hooliganism related to the degree to which soccer is central to the value-system of a country, and the length of time that it has occupied such a position? Though they themselves adhere to a range of different sociological perspectives, the contributors focus on the important theoretical framework devised by Eric Dunning and the Leicester School, in particular the role of aggressive masculinity and the hypothesis that attending matches is part of a "quest for excitement".Trade Review"This is one of the sadly rare instances of an Irish publisher producing a book not noticeably Irish in target readership or origin but of international importance and appeal." Books Ireland Summer 2002 "It is a must read for sports sociologists and others interested in the root causes of fan deviance ... it demonstrates how sports provide an important laboratory in which to study modern societal issues, such as class conflict and interracial strife." Contemporary Sociology 32 (4) 2003 "the contributors present an illuminating and at times entertaining composite sketch of the complex forces that generate this ubiquitous social ritual. Researchers interested in the diffusion of global sports culture and associated institutions such as fan groups and stadium security apparatus will find this volume a useful resource." CHOICE Sept 2003 "The overall balance of authors provides a timely international contribution to what is a growing worldwide phenomenon." Irish Journal of Sociology 2003Table of ContentsTowards a sociological understanding of football hooliganism as a world phenomenon; "Aguante" and repression - football, politics and violence in Argentina; Australian soccer's "ethnic" tribes; bohemian rhapsody - football supporters in the Czech Republic; another side to French exceptionalism - football without hooligans?; football hooliganism in Germany - a developmental sociological study; subcultures of hardcore fans in West Attica (Greece); the Hungarian case; the dog that didn't bark? Football hooliganism in Ireland; Italian ultras today - change or decline?; Barras Bravas - representation and crowd violence in Peruvian football; violent disturbances in Portuguese football; the "black cat" of South Africa and the chiefs-pirates conflict; soccer spectators and fans in Japan; a walk on the wild side - exposing North American sports crowd disorder; towards a global programme of football hooliganism research.
