  • Taking a Knee, Taking a Stand: African American

Charlesbridge Publishing,U.S. Taking a Knee, Taking a Stand: African American

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA history of the activism and achievement of African American athletes from Jesse Owens to Serena Williams to Colin Kaepernick, who advanced the cause of social justice through their outspokenness, commitment, and integrity. Muhammad Ali refused to fight in a war he believed was immoral. Wilma Rudolph retired from track and field to campaign for civil rights. Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to draw attention to the oppression of black bodies. Taking a Knee, Taking a Stand tells their stories and the stories of other prominent African American male and female athletes who often risked their careers to fight racial discrimination and promote social justice. From Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in major league baseball to NBA great Bill Russell sitting at the feet of Dr. Martin Luther King at the 1963 March on Washington to Althea Gibson asserting her tennis dominance at a time when many clubs would not allow African Americans to play on their courts, this moving and celebratory history shows how the tradition of black protest in sports has been consistent, necessary, and organic, and that the present crisis of misunderstanding and intolerance demands that this tradition continue as the country struggles toward fairness and equity.

Apple Academic Press Inc. Conservation, Tourism, and Identity of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis unique volume aims to promote new models of sustainable management in the field of contemporary mural art. Cultural heritage has become an essential tool for society, stressing the necessity to properly conserve cultural resources in order to maintain a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable development. In this book, the mural "Allegory to Work" by the artist Felipe Seade, located in Uruguay, is used as a case study. The work of Felipe Seade, a prominent political mural artist of the twentieth century, reflects the influence of Mexican heritage and the socio-political themes of that time, which were commonly used by the Social Realism art movement. The authors look at the mural—and its restoration—through the lens of tourism, globalization, and new interest in cultural heritage. The book demonstrates that the restoration should be aware that the perspective of the protagonists must be incorporated in the intervention process. This first-of-its-kind volume brings together historical, ethnographic, tourism, and scientific research that leads to a sustainable project, from the point of view of identity, economy, politics, and society. This volume, with over 50 color illustrations and many black and white photos, will be valuable for college and research libraries, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors in the field of cultural heritage and art as well as those involved in community-based research. Trade Review"Presents the point of view of the conservation and restoration of cultural assets, through the eyes of multiple disciplines: ethnography, art, science, and culture. It is a great work that clearly shows how to address the conservation of artworks in the society in which we live. The book provides the scientific method that professionals of the conservation of cultural heritage may apply to other cases. . . . Easy to read and well written, it has a coherent structure, where an accurate method is proposed, where all the links of the chain of protection of contemporary mural painting are linked, from research and study that includes its evaluation as works of art, up to its study as assets of social interest, combining the strategies and techniques of preventive conservation and museography, deepening in the contributions of science to reach its diffusion. It is a book that unites art and science, theory and practice, linking past and present but looking to the future." —María Dolores Ruiz de Lacanal Ruiz-Mateos, Professor, Department of Culture and History of Visual Arts, Seville University, SpainTable of ContentsIntroduction. Contemporary Uruguayan Mural Painting. Tradition and Relevance. Social Realism in Contemporary Mural Painting. Felipe Seade as the Main Figure of the Uruguayan Social Realism. • Interviews with Inspiration: Heroes and Icons...

Pitch Publishing Ltd Interviews with Inspiration: Heroes and Icons...

Book SynopsisInterviews with Inspiration is a forensic study of what it means and what it takes to be outstanding in the world of sport. It is written by world number one squash player and Commonwealth gold medallist James Willstrop; throughout his squash career he continuously 'did what it took', both physically and mentally, to reach the highest levels - often to unnecessary and somewhat damaging lengths. James talks to some of the sporting and cultural figures who inspired him and reflects on what they do and what drives them to do it. As well as profiling some great athletes of our time, he also delves into the worlds of writing, theatre, and even eye surgery: exploring parallels and differences that exist when people do things across the highest levels. Interviews with Inspiration provides a fascinating insight into a cross-section of icons and achievers, from the viewpoint of one of the most successful English athletes of a generation.

  • Touching the Heart: Why Sport Matters

Pitch Publishing Ltd Touching the Heart: Why Sport Matters

Book SynopsisAfter surviving a near-fatal scalding aged three, David Miller's life incentives emerged through involvement and achievement in a range of sports, nearing amateur international level in football and athletics. But then, needing employment, he retired at 22 to enter sports journalism. Having written on 30 sports from 120 countries for four national newspapers, Miller is perfectly placed to analyse and explain what drives those who excel in sport. This anthology of 50 epic performers provides a mirror of the emotions and commitment that drive the imagination of the many and the ambitions of the elite. From the unself-conscious self-discipline of Jesse Owens, Stanley Matthews, Jahangir Khan, Torvill and Dean and Steve Redgrave, to the fundamental loneliness and insecurity that galvanises spontaneous exhibitionists such as Jack Johnson, George Best and Alex Higgins, Miller uncovers what makes these great athletes and sports stars tick.

  • Sports Law

    Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sports Law

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSports law has been growing with increasing rapidity over the years since the first edition of this book was published in 1999, regularly making headlines as well as leading to a developing body of law practised by specialist lawyers. This revised work, by leading practitioners in the field, with a foreword by Lord Coe, provides a coherent framework for understanding the principles of sports law in this area, as well as a deep analysis of its key features. The subject is split into various areas of practice: first, regulatory rules, which embrace the constitutional aspect of organised sport, including the disciplinary procedures of the various governing organisations; second, broadcasting and marketing resulting from the commercial exploitation, including sponsorship, of sports clubs, sporting events and players; and third, player's rights and obligations, which embraces a wide range of legal issues including club transfers and player contracts, and issues arising from employment (including discrimination law), personal injury and criminal law. Special attention is paid to the impact of EU and Human Rights law as well as to the influential jurisprudence of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. London 2012 provides an appropriate point at which to assess the current state of the law, as well as a look to the future. The target readership extends from solicitors, barristers and legal advisers, to sports organisations and clubs, corporations involved in marketing and sponsorship, media companies, academics teaching sports law, and sports administrators. “I commend it to everyone who has to administer sport as well as to those who have to advise the administrators or argue cases in the field on whatever side. It is a gold medal book.” From the Foreword by Lord Coe KBE This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Sports Law online service.Trade Review…this edition is hugely well researched, equally well written and provides a holistic approach to the wide-ranging elements that comprise an ever-increasing and ever more popular specialist area of the law…What sets this publication apart from its competitors is the very essence that the reader is benefiting from the duality both of the collective knowledge and hands-on experience of the authorship in all aspects. A considered group opinion is thus put forward and is notably refreshing in the process…It is thoroughly enriched by being logical, intuitive, engagingly written and, above all, insightful…Practitioners, academics and sports administrators alike, cannot fail to be impressed and now everyone concerned in sports law has at their fingertips a handbook they can treat as a working bible. We cannot commend it highly enough. -- Mel Goldberg * International Sports Law Review, Issue 4 *Any lawyer interested in the field of sports law should have the Second Edition of Sports Law to hand; its lucid, comprehensive yet concise exposition of the relevant jurisprudence is as invigorating as a cold blast of fresh air in a sweaty workout. It reads like a good opinion, in which the author has mastered his subject and speaks authoritatively, with the answer and reasoning set out clearly and understood...Sports Law is written with intellectual rigour combined with a zest for the subject matter. The four authors bring a diversity of juridical backgrounds that instils a breath of vision into the analysis. If you are a busy practitioner looking for the "answer" to a sports law problem, this is the textbook; if you are an academic searching for some underlying principles and theories, there is plenty for you too. -- Tim Lord QC * Counsel Magazine *One of the many strengths of this book is its concision and good English. It is well bound, clearly and comprehensively footnoted and with full case indices at the beginning. It is easy to read and at £95 a bargain. Any law firm or sports organisation which has sports legal issues arising from time to time would find this book a very useful addition to library shelves. The authors have struck a lovely balance between in-depth knowledgeable commentary but presented in a way the busy lawyer can understand. It will be my first port of call from now on for any sports law question. -- Susan Singleton * IT Law Today *We have now reached the stage where sports law has assumed considerable importance in the many different ways in which it is addressed in this book. And in a country like ours, which is deeply committed to many different sports for entertainment, for personal satisfaction, for fitness, and for livelihoods and international representation, justice in the world of sports is of great importance, for some indeed of overwhelming importance. They, and all those responsible for every sport need to know where they stand, where they might go wrong, and where they need to think before they make their decisions. This book tells them everything they need to know. -- The Rt. Hon. The Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales,Review from the First Edition …this book clearly and accessibly opens up a range of issues which should be of interest to anyone, lawyers or otherwise, who has an interest in the position of sport within an increasingly globalising economy. -- Raymond Boyle * Tottel's Communications Law *Review from the First Edition …the skill of the authors is such that there may well now be a specialist sub-topic, the law of the replica football shirtThis collection of interesting and informative papers will help sports law to find a coherence of its own and it is to be commended. -- Robert Shields * Journal of the Law Society of Scotland *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisLondon is one of the most exciting cities in the world-dynamic, noisy, colourful - and non-stop. It can also be exhausting, crowded and intense. So for those of us who like to stop, breathe and enjoy a slower pace of life, Lost in London is for you. If you prefer to spend your weekends walking on London’s commons, or hunting down fireside pubs for a pint rather than frequenting cocktail bars or clubs, then read on. Lost In London first began life as a magazine. From this, its founders Lucy and Tina, have lovingly created a beautiful book that unearths a hidden treasure - the secret side of London. This urban nature guide shows us how to slow down and reconnect with the greener side of the capital. Sections include a guide to exploring the city’s reservoirs, cemeteries, and meadows, an alternative look at the Thames and London’s lakes, canals and wetlands, and an entire section dedicated to foraging, beekeeping and henkeeping. The book is full of delicious recipes for you to make using your foraged food, such as damson gin, pontack, pork, apple and black pudding pasties and blackberry vinegar. There’s gardening advice with suggestions on how to make the most of your allotment, rooftop or window box, practical ideas for outdoorsy day trips, and a brilliant guide to the animals, insects and birds that share our city. Packed with stunning illustrations, gorgeous photography and handy maps, this is an indispensable, inspirational guide to living simply in the city. Lucy Scott and Tina Smith launched Lost in London magazine three years ago over a shared passion for the natural world and reflecting its place in urban life. It was intended to be a oneoff experimental portfolio project, but it quickly established as one of the most foremost independent magazine titles around.

Editon Synapse Emergence of the World Tour (ES 5-vol. set)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a facsimile reprint in five volumes of nine travel guides and handbooks published for Western travellers in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century. The opening of the Suez Canal and the transcontinental ‘Pacific’ railway in America, both in 1869, made the world drastically smaller and initiated a new phase of word travel. Regular international services by steamships and the Pacific railways made travel to the Far East from either Europe or from America far simpler and cheaper. In order to respond to the demand from the growing number of steamship and rail passengers, many of whom were making a ‘world tour’, various guide books were published around this time. Some were small booklets, including timetables and/or tourist guides distributed only to the passengers, while others were thick handbooks, including encyclopaedic information about routes, ports, and towns. They included many illustrations, charts, and maps. These publications are now a vital source of historic data for anyone interested in the history of travel and tourism. They are also an important source for historians of the modernization of Asia and Japan, but, until now, most of them have been extremely difficult to obtain in good condition, their many fold-out pages being especially susceptible to damage. This new facsimile collection from Edition Synapse—now available outside Japan from Routledge—includes nine of the most important guides. Along with the entire texts, the collection also reproduces all the original maps, charts and tables.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the fourth part of a successful facsimile series which reprints The Modern Traveller, originally published in 30 volumes between 1825 and 1829. Edited by Josiah Conder, the editor of journals like The Eclectic Review or The Patriot, The Modern Traveller was a successful series of travel books published just prior to Britain’s transport revolution which saw the development and rapid expansion of roads and railways. Reflecting Britain’s imperial ambitions and the expansion of its Empire around the globe, the series had global range, including coverage of the Middle East, Africa, North & South America, and Asia. It provided general readers with the latest information on each country’s geography, history, political situation, culture, customs, major cities, travel routes along historic sites, scenic spots, and so on. Each volume contains illustrations and foldout maps which are all faithfully reproduced in the reprint. The fourth part of the series is from the 20th to the 25th volume. It covers Africa and North America, which were both of geopolitical and of commercial interests to Britain in the early nineteenth-century, particularly in view of the slavery trade. Including very interesting descriptions and pre-Victorian British views of the area, these newly available volumes are a valuable source for any researcher interested in the history of the relationships between Britain and those new continents.Table of ContentsVol. 20: Africa 1General View of Africa / Discoveries of the Ancients / Discoveries of the Portuguese / Formation of the Royal 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the official book of team Luna Rossa, containing previously unpublished images that not only represent the phases of the Prada Cup and America's Cup regattas but also the everyday life of a team engaged in the world's most important sailing competition. The texts are written by authoritative sailing journalists and not only retrace the stages of the challenge with the New Zealand rivals, but also reveal the complicated rules of the America's Cup as well as rivalries and alliances between the teams: the team changes, the betrayals, the great controversies between the protagonists of the challenges. Finally, the photographs reveal two countries' passion for sailing: Italy, which cheered Luna Rossa on to exorcise a period of restrictions and difficulties while immersed in the coronavirus pandemic; and New Zealand, where sailing, together with rugby, is the most popular and widely practiced sport, so much so that the whole country stops to watch the regattas. The book also contains brief presentations by Patrizio Bertelli, owner of Prada and head of the Luna Rossa team, and Max Sirena, the skipper and team captain.

Book SynopsisContends that the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus shed important light on issues - such as the pursuit of excellence, the concept of play, and the power of accepting physical limitations while also improving one's body - that remain just as relevant in our sports-obsessed age as they were in ancient Greece.Trade Review"Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals is an original, fascinating, and well-argued book. It is written with great clarity. The ease with which Daniel Dombrowski is able to move between the elucidation of ancient Greek ideals and the context of twenty-first-century sports is very impressive." - Michael McNamee, Swansea University"

Book SynopsisFrom jazz fantasy camp to running a movie studio; from a fight between an old guy and a fat guy to a fear of clowns, this book delivers two dozen essays that revolve around the themes and obsessions that have characterized Rotella's writing from the start: boxing, music, writers, and cities.Trade Review"Carlo Rotella is an old-fashioned journalist in the best sense of the term: he doesn't just visit the people and places he writes about, he inhabits them. His articles and essays are models of empathy and understanding. And because he is a man who appreciates craft - the craft of boxers, fencers, musicians, and clowns - his own work always strikes the right celebratory note, the one that ends with just the slightest inflection of melancholy - which, unparadoxically, is what makes his work a pleasure to read." • The Anthropology of Sport

University of California Press The Anthropology of Sport

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisFew activities bring together physicality, emotions, politics, money, and morality as dramatically as sport. In Brazil's stadiums or parks in China, on Cuba's baseball diamonds or rugby fields in Fiji, human beings test their physical limits, invest emotional energy, bet money, perform witchcraft, and ingest substances, making sport a microcosm of what life is about. The Anthropology of Sport explores not only what anthropological thinking tells us about sports, but also what sports tell us about the ways in which the sporting body is shaped by and shapes the social, cultural, political, and historical contexts in which we live. Core themes discussed in this book include the body, modernity, nationalism, the state, citizenship, transnationalism, globalization, and gender and sexuality.Trade Review"The three authors of The Anthropology of Sport have written their up-to-date survey of anthropology and sport in the style of an introductory textbook. The trio covers a basic range of topics in eight chapters, each of which could function as the essential reading for a lecture . . . Major thinkers and concepts are introduced in a deliberated, easy-to-understand manner." * Pacific Affairs *"Brownell, Besnier, and Carter’s work is a new text in a yet undefined field – it may be the start of something new. If interested in the global nature of sport today, The Anthropology of Sport is a necessary read." * Foucault News *"Besnier, Brownell and Carter . . . follow a distinct anthropological line of thinking, advocating a wide application of the term 'sport' that takes into account its various local, daily and emic conceptions in the context of globalization." * Paideuma *"This is a well‐written and accessible text. . . . The book can stimulate new research in a highly fertile but understudied area of anthropology." * American Ethnologist *"A foundational text. . . . The writing is clear, the style consistent, and the presentation informative and absorbing." * Journal of Anthropological Research *"Deeply insightful. . . . This volume can function as an important point of reference and source of inspiration for myriad anthropological research projects to come." * Social Anthropology *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1 • Sport, Anthropology, and History 2 • Sport, Colonialism, and Imperialism 3 • Sport, Health, and the Environment 4 • Sport, Social Class, Race, and Ethnicity 5 • Sport and Sex, Gender, and Sexuality 6 • Sport, Cultural Performance, and Mega-events 7 • Sport, Nation, and Nationalism 8 • Sport in the World System Epilogue: Sport for Anthropology Notes Selected Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisThe essays in this reader examine philosophical issues such as sportsmanship, violence, cheating, drug use, racism, sexism, and gender equity. Examines ethical issues in sports, such as sportsmanship, violence, cheating, drug use, racism, sexism, and gender equity. Includes essays by psychologists, sociologists, coaches, and sports writers. Gives the reader an understanding of the moral significance of sport, and how sports affect society. Trade Review‘Sports Ethics is a cleverly compiled anthology that clearly addresses the main issues facing sport today. Previously published classical arguments by highly respected sport philosophers are augmented by ten new articles written specifically for this anthology. This is topical, well organized and insightful – an excellent addition to the literature.’ John M. Charles, The College of William and Mary ‘The selections in this volume give a powerful statement of the common practices in sport which negate the values that sport is supposed to instill: justice, respect, responsibility, and honesty. In addition, Dean Smith's foreword offers a thoughtful, pragmatic point of view which often is lost in theoretical work.’ Sharon Kay Stoll, University of IdahoTable of ContentsNotes on Contributors ix Foreword by Dean Smith xv Preface xvi Acknowledgments xviii Introduction – The Moral Significance of Sport 1Jan Boxill Part I: Sport and Education 1.
