  • The Oval: Souvenir Guidebook

Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd The Oval: Souvenir Guidebook

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Oval is one of the world's great cricket grounds. It was here in south London in 1882 that the legend of the Ashes was born, and many of the game's most memorable events have taken place here, including Don Bradman's duck in his final innings and Kevin Pietersen's coruscating 158 that sealed England's 2005 Ashes win. Home to Surrey County Cricket Club since it opened in 1845, the Oval also staged England's first international football match and the first FA Cup Final, and has hosted everything from American football to rock concerts. This official guidebook provides a fascinating introduction to the Oval, covering its history, architecture and the people who have made it what it is today, from ground staff to sporting heroes. It is illustrated throughout, with images ranging from archival photography of the ground's earliest days to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy Final.

This scholarly work was different from other architecture books of the day because Hunter was not a designer attempting to attract commissions through his writing. This exact reprint of The Linksbelongs in the libraries of all aficionados of golf course architecture.Table of ContentsPreface. Ante Scriptum: To Links-Land. Shots—Old and New. • Hillsborough - The Truth

Transworld Publishers Ltd Hillsborough - The Truth

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is the definitive, unique account of the disaster in which 96 men, women and children were killed, hundreds injured and thousands traumatised. It details the appalling treatment endured by the bereaved and survivors in the immediate aftermath, the inhumanity of the identification process and the vilification of fans in the national and international media. In 2012, Phil Scraton was primary author of the ground-breaking report published by the Hillsborough Independent Panel following its new research into thousands of documents disclosed by all agencies involved. Against a backdrop of almost three decades of persistent struggle by bereaved families and survivors, in this new edition he reflects on the Panel’s in-depth work, its revelatory findings and their unprecedented impact – an unreserved apology from the Prime Minister; new criminal investigations; the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s largest-ever inquiry; the quashing of 96 inquest verdicts; a review of all health and pathology policies. Paving the way for truth recovery and institutional accountability in other controversial cases, he details the process and considers the impact of the longest ever inquests, from the preliminary hearings to their comprehensive, devastating verdicts.Powerful, disturbing and harrowing, Hillsborough: The Truth exposes the institutional complacency that led to the unlawful killing of the 96, revealing how the interests of ordinary people are marginalised when those in authority sacrifice truth and accountability to protect their reputations.Trade ReviewThis book is dynamite. A brilliant achievement, a real page-turner. -- Jimmy McGovernThe full truth about Hillsborough would never have been known were it not for Phil Scraton’s meticulous efforts over many years – he has done a huge service not just to the Hillsborough families but to this country. -- Andy Burnham, MP

Book SynopsisFollowing the success of Remarkable Cricket Grounds, author Brian Levison focuses his attention on the amazing variety of grassroots cricket venues throughout the British Isles. In the original book he covered some of the largest stadia where cricket is played throughout the world. In Remarkable Village Cricket Grounds he concentrates on the smallest. The inventory of beautiful and atmospheric grounds includes those played by the seaside, at the edge of moorland, in front of grand country houses or on wind-blasted hillsides. Village cricket is played next to windmills, thatched cottages, trout streams, in the heart of Cotswold stone hamlets, and on many of the country's verdant village greens. There are some classic cricketing pubs included along with lavish teas, ancient pitch rollers, equally ancient club secretaries and a variety of warning signs for those wishing to park their car within slogging distance. Almost all of the venues are located in the kind of set-piece British landscape that will have the tourist boards begging for copies. It is a treasury of British life featuring clubs from: Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, Kent, Wiltshire, Bedfordshire, Surrey, Essex, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Northumberland, Leicestershire, Wales and Scotland.Trade Review'[T]his beautiful book showing some of the finest grounds in the country.' * This England *

Book SynopsisWhat started as America’s National Pastime is now a global phenomenon with multi-million dollar baseball leagues around the world and enough countries playing the game to warrant its inclusion in the 2020/1 Olympics. What started as America’s National Pastime is now a global phenomenon with multi-million dollar baseball leagues around the world and enough countries playing the game to warrant its inclusion in the 2020/1 Olympics. Remarkable Ballparks looks at the range of amazing places that host baseball games starting with the historic Wrigley Field rooftop grandstands, together with the home of the Green Monster, Fenway Park. In 1960, John Updike writing in the New Yorker described Fenway Park as: “a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark". Then there are the mega-structures of the modern ballparks with retractable roofs to protect against weather: Toronto’s Roger’s Centre and Seattle’s T-Mobile Park for rain, and Miami’s LoanDepot Park for heat. Baseball is an American family tradition, extolled by the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and its accompanying pitches, along with the movie site from Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, which has fulfilled the prophecy: ‘If you build it, they will come’. Now MLB has come and played a match there. Modern ballparks have introduced some remarkable features centerfield, including the mini arboretum at Coors Field and the Devil Rays tank at Tropicana Field. The Arizona Diamondbacks might have a swimming pool at Chase Field, but the MLB stadium can’t match the waterpark ride at Frisco’s Dr. Pepper Stadium. The Modern Woodmen Ballpark in Davenport Iowa doesn’t let a small matter like the Mississippi flooding stop play. After building perimeter flood barriers and walkways to the stadium, the ballpark has become an accessible island. Perhaps there is no more touching a story than the Gail S. Halvorsen Ballpark opened in Berlin in 2019. Lieutenant Halversen took part in the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949 and became known as the ‘Candy Bomber’ after dropping candy attached to parachutes for children gathered to watch the planes land. At age 98 he was invited back to the city for the naming of a baseball park in his name. A remarkable man and his ballpark.

Nicknamed the Wembley of the North, the famous old stadium still holds the record for the highest provincial attendance in England – when an incredible 84,569 fans shoehorned into the ground to watch City beat Stoke City 1-0 in an FA Cup tie.
