  • Heritage and Sport: An Introduction

Channel View Publications Ltd Heritage and Sport: An Introduction

Book SynopsisThis book provides a holistic view of the relationship between heritage and sport. It examines four types of sport heritage: tangible immovable sport heritage (sports venues, monuments and memorials, landscapes); tangible movable sport heritage (museums and halls of fame, events, living sport heritage); intangible sport heritage (intangibility of sport heritage, institutions, existential); and goods and services with a sport heritage component (tourism, marketing, management). It offers both theoretical and applied approaches to the heritage–sport relationship and intersects with many contemporary topics in heritage, sport, tourism, events and marketing. It will be useful to students and researchers in sport tourism, sport studies, heritage studies, sport history, museum studies and sports management.Trade ReviewThis engaging and accessible book offers a thought-provoking overview of a subject that continues to grow in both industry and academia. It maps out with clarity, not only the many manifestations of sport related heritage, but also the countless issues and debates that emanate from them. There is little doubt that it will appeal to those who have a passion for sport and/or heritage, as well as to those new to this fascinating area of research. * Sean Gammon, University of Central Lancashire, UK *Studiously researched and richly illustrated with an impressive breadth of case material, Ramshaw offers fascinating insights into a powerful but hitherto much neglected relationship between heritage and sport, striking a fine balance between theoretical and applied insights that will be appreciated by the wide readership that this book deserves. * James Higham, University of Otago, New Zealand *This book delivers a richly illustrated and clearly written exploration of the changing dynamics of the heritage field and its relationship to sport. Drawing from diverse understandings of heritage, and with a focus on sporting venues, memorials, sportscapes, memorabilia, events, living heritage, memories and affective experience, the volume interrogates the relationships between heritage and sport in operation across everyday lives, nations and in flow across national boundaries. * Emma Waterton, Western Sydney University, Australia *Heritage and Sport offers important insight into the way the past is used and consumed outside the academic study of sport history. The book takes seriously the public appeal of ritual and nostalgia while also acknowledging the need for critical examination of challenging histories. -- Jenny Ellison, Canadian Museum of History * Journal of Sport History, Volume 48, Number 1, Spring 2021 *Gregory Ramshaw’s contribution is a most welcome one, as it provides the kind of overview that would have greatly benefited me during my postgraduate studies [...] The book serves as an accessible and concise introduction to the subject, linking to several wider fields of study such as tourism and events, making it of particular use to the university student. * Alexander Jackson, The National Football Museum, Manchester, UK, Sport in History 2023, Vol. 43, No. 3, *This is an excellent addition to the existing sports heritage literature, which I would argue, over the past decade, has become more/greater than a sum of its parts. It is written in a manner that is interesting, informative and inclusive. The book does exactly what is was intended to do by providing a source of ideas and inspiration, as well as a launchpad for further research. -- Richard Keith Wright, University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand * Journal of Sport & Tourism, 2020 *Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisEuro 2016 will forever have a special place in the hearts and memories of Wales football supporters, especially the tens of thousands who travelled to France and filled the stadiums with song, joy and colour as they proudly took their place in the spectacular 'Red Wall'. Bryn Law, author of the acclaimed Zombie Nation Awakes, was one of those passionate fans who fulfilled a life-long dream of following the Wales national team to a major tournament and 'Don't Take Me Home' is his diary of that magical month that gripped the whole nation. From arranging time off work to organising travel, accommodation and the all-important match tickets - as well as trying to explain to his patient and long-suffering family that he couldn't be sure exactly when he'd be back - Bryn perfectly describes the steep, tricky and expensive learning-curve faced by thousands of Welsh fans as he criss-crossed France by plane, car, camper van, tram and bus, desperate not to miss a match whilst enjoying the company of his friends and fellow fans. In 'Don't Take Me Home' Welsh fans can relive every game of the Euro 2016 experience from a supporter's perspective. Everyone has their own favourite memory of the tournament and Bryn lovingly recalls every game on that joyful journey: from the amazing scenes in Bordeaux to the 'chin up' disappointment of Lens; the perfect performance in Toulouse to the Celtic party in Paris; and from the sheer euphoria of Lille to the pride and au revoir in Lyon. Bryn Law's emotional, humorous yet insightful diary explains why Welsh fans - whenever they are asked about their experiences at Euro 2016 - smile, wipe away a tear and say 'It was the best month of my life': 'Don't Take Me Home'.Trade Review'Zombie Nation Awakes' was the story of the journey to France. 'Don't Take Me Home' is a record of the culmination of that epic journey. It tells of the indomitable spirit of the long-suffering football fan, the bond between supporters and the unbridled joy of seeing your team not just winning but surpassing all expectations. Nobody could be better placed or better informed to document and tell the wonderful story.' Barry Horne, from his Preface, 'I've had some great experiences as a player, for club and country, but I'll be a lucky man indeed if anything I ever experience in the future matches the summer of 2016. It was just the most unbelievable and enjoyable few weeks of my life! I'm pretty sure we managed to give Bryn a few good memories, as seen in his story of the greatest summer of all of our lives, enjoy!', Chris Gunter, from his Foreword.Table of ContentsIntroduction, 1. Book SynopsisThe day the county cricket fixtures are revealed each winter, hoteliers in Scarborough get ready for their phones to melt. Enjoy tales from the game and town that will surprise and delight, like the time the PA system picked up a funeral during play or when Derek Randall gave Sarfraz Nawaz a wire rubbish bin to aid his ability to field. There are interviews with fans, players and coaches past and present and those who have been coming to Scarborough for up to 50 years. Read Geoffrey Boycott's last innings for Yorkshire in his own words, Ken Rutherford's 317 in a day recalled by the man himself and Jason Gillespie on his favourite Festival memories. John Fuller travels to the coastal town to find the characters and stories, watch Yorkshire in action and tap into Scarborough's enduring appeal.

  • World in their Hands: The Story of the First

Polaris Publishing Limited World in their Hands: The Story of the First

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisShortlisted for the Sunday Times Rugby Book of the Year 2023 World in their Hands recounts the remarkable events that led to a group of friends from south-west London staging the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup in 1991. The tournament was held just 13 years after teams from University College London and King’s contested a match that catalysed the growth of the women’s game in the UK, and the organisers overcame myriad obstacles before, during and after the World Cup. Those challenges, which included ingrained misogyny, motherhood, a recession, the Gulf War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, provide a fitting framing device for a book that celebrates female achievement in the face of adversity. Although ostensibly a story about women’s rugby, this is a tale that has rare crossover appeal. It is not only the account of a group of inspirational women who took on the institutional misogyny that existed in rugby clubs across the globe to put on a first ever Women’s Rugby World Cup. It is also the compelling and relatable tale of how those women, their peers and others in the generations before them, reshaped the idea of what it means to be a woman, finding acceptance and friendship on boggy rugby pitches. At the time, with the men’s game tying itself up in knots about professionalism and apartheid, these women were a breath of fresh air. Three decades on, their achievements deserve to be highlighted to a wider audience.Trade Review'A remarkable and inspirational story' -- Sarah Mockford * Rugby World *'A hilarious, thoroughly interesting and endearing read about those who paved the way for women's rugby today. One of the best rugby stories in history - men's or women's - told perfectly' -- Jessica Hayden * The Times *'An uplifting and outstanding effort to tell the story of the amazing pioneers behind the 1991 World Cup. This is a story that deserved its own spotlight and Martyn has done a terrific job in bringing it all together' -- Ali Donnelly * Scrumqueens *'Thomas has done brilliantly to unearth a treasure trove of important stories from those who have made women’s rugby what it is today. An extraordinary, empowering and truly engaging read' -- Fiona Tomas * The Telegraph *

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAn hilarious tale about an epic event, written from a unique perspective. To be able to appreciate the story, the reader needs to be young at heart, have a vivid imagination and a love for adventure. If that sounds like you, join the writer on his journey, and experience his daily ups and downs with him. The Tour Aotearoa is a mountain bike ‘brevet’ (a timed, long-distance cycling event) covering the length of New Zealand. It starts at the most northern point of the North Island, Cape Reinga, and finishes at Stirling Point, just south of Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. The Tour is held biennially and requires participants to follow a set route covering 3,000 km which consists of existing mountain bike trails scattered throughout the country and connected by back country roads. The Tour is unsupported, so participants carry their own gear. To be awarded the brevet, the riders need to cover the full distance within 30 days. The writer took part in the 2018 edition of the Tour. His experience was different from what he expected. He encountered all types of challenges, from getting lost to physical ailments, serious weather events and loneliness. In between he had plenty of time to contemplate and let his thoughts and imagination run free. It helped him pass the time. He was seen late at night, furiously hammering away on his laptop, regardless of how tired he was, reliving the events and contemplations of the day. It helped him make sense of his journey and how it fitted into the complex world we live in. He called it his ‘administration’.
