Oxford University Press Medjugorje and the Supernatural
Trade ReviewKlimek's impressive study manages to bring faith and science into earnest conversation in a manner that is both learned and accessible ... This is an important book for anyone desiring a way to think about religious experience that betrays neither faith nor science. * Luke Timothy Johnson, Commonweal Magazine *Klimek deals with this need to know about the nature of the phenomenon, which in this case is something quite extraordinary. In particular, he responds to a major and recurrent ploy that aims to undercut the whole phenomenon by pathologizing it. * Michael Grosso, Religious Studies Review *Like many past entries into this field, Klimek trains his gaze on the scientific study of religious experience, in this case studies that have been done on the psychology and neuroscience of a small group of visionaries who have, for over thirty years, claimed to see daily apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Balkan village of Medjugorje. What makes Klimek's book noteworthy - and ambitious - is his insistence that these studies both prove the authenticity (and supernatural nature) of the events at Medjugorje, and provide a new framework for cooperation between science and religion. * Samuel J. Gee, Reading Religion *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION: The Silence of the Birds CHAPTER 1: The Young Woman on the Hill CHAPTER 2: Public Revelation and Private Revelation: How the Catholic Church Discerns the Supernatural CHAPTER 3: Mysticism in the Twentieth Century CHAPTER 4: The Great Debate CHAPTER 5: Medical and Scientific Studies on the Apparitions in Medjugorje CHAPTER 6: Medjugorje's Uniqueness: A Different Case Study for Neuroscience CHAPTER 7: Learning from Shortcomings, Moving Forward with New Methods CONCLUSION: Contributions to the "Eternal-Battleground" BIBLIOGRAPHY

Oxford University Press Spiritual Narratives
Book SynopsisThese narratives by four famous black woman preachers and evangelists, published between 1835 and 1907, all share a theme that continues to dominate Afro-American literature even today: the power of Christianity to give strength and comfort in the struggle for liberation from caste and gender restrictions.Trade ReviewThese itinerant black women preachers whose autobiographies occasionally read like travelogue? * or in the case of Maria Stewart, a mournful adieu upon embarkatio?were living out on the geographical landscape the metaphor of their psychic and spiritual journey, were literalizing the quest for a locus of freedom...Sue E. Houchins, in her Introduction *

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Musical Thought and Spiritual Lives of
Book SynopsisThis book examines the origin, content, and development of the musical thought of Heinrich Schenker and Arnold Schoenberg. One of the premises is that Schenker's and Schoenberg's inner musical lives are inseparable from their inner spiritual lives. Curiously, Schenker and Schoenberg start out in much the same musical-spiritual place, yet musically they split while spiritually they grow closer. The reception of Schenker's and Schoenberg's work has sidestepped this paradox of commonality and conflict, instead choosing to universalize and amplify their conflict. Bringing to light a trove of unpublished material, Arndt argues that Schenker's and Schoenberg's conflict is a reflection of tensions within their musical and spiritual ideas. They share a particular conception of the tone as an ideal sound realized in the spiritual eye of the genius. The tensions inherent in this largely psychological and material notion of the tone and this largely metaphysical notion of the genius shape bothTrade ReviewNames: Arndt, Matthew.Title: The musical thought and spiritual lives of Heinrich Schenker and Arnold Schoenberg / Matthew Arndt.Description: Abingdon, Oxon : New York, NY : Routledge, 2018. | Series: Ashgate studies in theory and analysis of music after 1900 | Includes bibliographical references and index.Identifiers: LCCN 2017016009| ISBN 9781138287259 (hardback) | ISBN 9781315268347 (ebook)Subjects: LCSH: Schoenberg, Arnold, 1874-1951--Criticism and interpretation. | Schenker, Heinrich, 1868-1935--Criticism and interpretation. | Music--20th century--History and criticism.Classification: LCC ML410.S283 A85 2018 | DDC 780.92/2--dc23LC record available at https://lccn.loc.gov/2017016009Table of ContentsPart 1: Schenker’s and Schoenberg’s Thinking About Music 1. Book SynopsisThis book, the first in the field for two decades, looks at the relationships between geography and religion. It represents a synthesis of research by geographers of many countries, mainly since the 1960s. No previous book has tackled this emerging field from such a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, and never before have such a variety of detailed case studies been pulled together in so comparative or illuminating a way. Examples and case studies have been drawn from all the major world religions and from all continents from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Major themes covered in the book include the distribution of religion and the processes by which religion and religious ideas spread through space and time. Some of the important links between religion and population are also explored. A great deal of attention is focused on the visible manifestations of religion on the cultural landscape, including landscapes of worship and of death, and the whole field of sacreTable of ContentsPreface 1 GEOGRAPHY AND RELIGION: CONTEXT AND CONTENT 2 REFLECTIONS ON RELIGION 3 DISTRIBUTIONS: SPATIAL PATTERNS OF RELIGION 4 DIFFUSION: RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND ORGANISATIONS 5 DYNAMICS: HOW RELIGIONS CHANGE 6 RELIGION AND POPULATION 7 RELIGION AND LANDSCAPE 8 SACRED PLACES AND PILGRIMAGE
