Peeters Publishers Mysticism and/as Love Theory
Book SynopsisMysticism is all about love. Mystics love God and want to get in touch with Him. To this end, they follow a tortuous path through the intimacy of their own souls, driven by desire. The Lord may not be the easiest of lovers, but this does not prevent them from longing for Him. In fact, his perceived absence, physical and even mental, makes their love burn all the fiercer. And this burning love is far from thoughtless. The difficulty of loving God is precisely one of the main reasons why mystics have always felt the need to reflect profoundly upon their relationship with Him. The mystical canon testifies in various ways to its authors’ extensive and diversified thinking on their intense spiritual love lives. And these reflections all have their elaborate, subtle theories of love. It is from this perspective that the contributions to this volume approach several important works in the Christian mystical tradition, from the Seven Ways of Minne by Beatrice of Nazareth, via Novalis’s Hymns to the Night, to the Prologue by Simone Weil. These writings are examined for their specific theoretical schemes and backgrounds. At the same time, the question is also dealt with how the theory and the experience of love relate to one another in these texts. Investigations of the reflections on this topic by modern thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault round off this exploration of mysticism and its love theories.

Rupa Publications India Pvt Ltd. UNMASKING INDIAN SECULARISM: Why We Need a New
Book SynopsisIn a bold attempt to help break the impasse in HinduMuslim relation, this book brings a much-needed perspective to a polarized debate on conflicting notions of secularism. It calls for de-hyphenating the so-called Muslim Question' (place of Muslims in a Hindu-majority India) from the wider debate on secularism and advocates a new HinduMuslim deal based around the centuries-old common cultural heritage skirting religious differences. In a refreshing break from liberal orthodoxy, the book explores the idea of a secular Hindu state which will recognize Hinduism as the official religion but guarantee equal rights to all its citizens, irrespective of their faith: a version of Britain's secular Christian state. An incisive analysis of why secularism failed and the rise of majoritarian Hindu nationalism, it underlines the urgent need for a new road map to restore communal harmony before it's too late for course correction.

Rupa Publications India Pvt Ltd. DISCOVERING JESUS
Book SynopsisThe message of Jesus is of interest to every student of religion as his followers are the highest in number in the world today. But what really were the teachings of Jesus? References from the Bible show that Jesus had twelve prominent disciples, called Apostles. One of them betrayed him which led to his crucifixion. This Apostle was replaced by another with the common consent of the remaining eleven. These Apostles had accompanied Jesus in his lifetime and are to be trusted for knowing what his real teachings were. Christianity today, in all the churches, however, is what Paul laid down. Paul had emerged shortly after the death of Jesus and had never met him in his lifetime! This raises several questions: whether the Apostles and Paul were in conflict with each other? What was laid down by Paul as distinct from what the Apostles believed and taught? What happened to the teachings of Jesus that his Apostles were carrying? What were the real teachings of Jesus? This book tries to find answers to these questions and brings out evidence from the Bible and the writings of Christian theologians of the past to establish that Paul fought a running battle with the Apostles in his lifetime and that the Church founded by the Apostles did not acknowledge him to be an apostle and rejected all his writings. Discovering Jesus is a ground-breaking work on the religion followed by more than two billion people across the globe

NUS Press Haunted Houses and Ghostly Encounters:
Book SynopsisHaunted Houses and Ghostly Encounters presents a history of Western ethnography of animism in East Timor during the Portuguese period. The book consists of ten chapters, each one a narrative of the work and experience of a particular ethnographer. Part One deals with colonial ethnography and Part Two with professional anthropology. Covering a selection of seminal 19th- and 20th-century ethnographies, the author explores the relationship between spiritual beliefs, colonial administration, ethnographic interests and fieldwork experience. It is argued that the presence of outsiders precipitated a new 'transformative animism' as colonial control over Portuguese Timor was consolidated. This came about because increasingly powerful outsiders posed threats and offered rewards to the Timorese just as the powerful ancestor spirits had long done; consequently, the Timorese ritualised their dealings with outsiders following their established model for appealing to spirits. Bringing colonial and professional ethnography into the one frame of reference, it is shown that ethnographers of both types not only bore witness to these processes of transformative animism, they also exemplified them. The book presents an original synthesis of East Timor's history, culture and anthropology.
