Brill A Companion to Anabaptism and Spiritualism, 1521-1700
Book SynopsisThis handbook provides a comprehensive survey of current scholarship on Anabaptist and Spiritualist history and theology from 1521 to 1700. Since the last half of the twentieth century, the historiography of the Radical Reformation has been the focus of vigorous and creative debate. The volume–broadly cast in terms of geographic scope and topical coverage–carefully untangles the fluid boundaries of Spiritualism and Anabaptism in Early Modern European history. In addition to a narrative summary, each chapter also provides a bibliography of sources and current scholarship, and concludes with suggestions for future research. This handbook will serve a generation of students as the standard reference work on Anabaptism and Spiritualism. Contributors include: Geoffrey Dipple, Michael Driedger, Hans-Jürgen Goertz, Brad Gregory, Sigrun Haude, Ralf Klötzer, John D. Rempel, John D. Roth, Martin Rothkegel, C. Arnold Snyder, James Stayer, Piet Visser, and R. Emmet McLaughlin. Originally published in hardcover.Trade Review"[...] this volume brings Anabaptist research a significant step forward, never failing to provide even the well-read student of Anabaptism with fresh insights, often at the most unexpected of places". - Stephen E. Buckwalter, Bucer-Forschungsstelle, Heidelberg, in: The Mennonite Quarterly Review, Vol. 83, No. 3 (July 2009). - Astrid von Schlachta, Universität Innsbruck, in: Innsbrucker Historische Studien, Vol. 26 (2010), pp. 245-248Table of ContentsList of Contributors Foreword, John D. Brill Towards a New Anthropology of the Embodied Mind: Maine de Biran’s Physio-Spiritualism from 1800 to the 21st Century
Book SynopsisThis exploration in the history of ideas examines the groundbreaking notion of the embodied mind in its analysis by the French philosopher and politician Maine de Biran (1766–1824) and in its afterlife: consciousness is generated through frequent interaction between the voluntary and the spiritual. The conscious, active self is constituted in its sovereign autonomy, as free and undivided, by an inner act of willful resistance, a physical effort towards its own body and the world. For the first time, a multidisciplinary group of senior and junior researchers from Japan, USA and Europe investigate origins and discursive cross-fertilization of this concept around 1800, an intermediary stage between 1870 and 1945, and its influence upon existentialism, phenomenology, and deconstructivism during the postwar-period and beyond, from 1943 to 2010.Table of Contents9789004515611 Acknowledgements List of Figures Notes on Contributors Introduction Part 1 Maine De Biran in His Time (Around) 1800 1 Maine de Biran: Gender, Sensibility, and the Dynamics of Self in Post-revolutionary France Sean Quinlan 2 Maine de Biran and Neurology Larry McGrath 3 On Sympathy and Attention: Maine de Biran, Reader of Adam Smith and Dugald Stewart Marco Piazza 4 Did Maine de Biran Refute David Hume? Brill Between Play and Prayer: The Variety of Theatricals in Spiritual Performance
Book SynopsisBetween Play and Prayer launches Spiritual Performance as a term to cover all human performance which in some way refers to creating the presence of beings or entities from a realm that transgresses the sensorial. This notion covers a great variety of performative genres, ranging from funerary services, spiritualist performances of deceased souls, to spiritual readings. This broad and deep approach to a range of performances is answering a renewed craving for spirituality in contemporary culture. By way of performance theory and aesthetic theory, concepts of faith, belief, experience, play, prayer and theatricality, are set in motion when proposing the necessity of experiencing such performances on their own terms. In depth descriptions of a variety of performances in Norwegian and New Zealand local contexts show the necessity of experiencing and understanding an existential quality in Spiritual Performance. Faith, not credo, is at the heart of spiritual practice. The book represents a new, innovative and trans-disciplinary approach to spirituality in performance. The reading of this book is a must for scholars in the field of theatre- and performance studies, ritual and festival studies, for scholars of religion, and anyone interested in the understanding of spiritual practices.Trade Review"The reader cannot fail to admire the attention to detail of Hammer’s research, as well as her honesty, frankness, and even what she calls love, here defined as ‘another form of truth… subject to the use of theatricality’." – A. Robert Lauer, University of OklahomaTable of ContentsIllustrations Preface Chapter One: Introduction Chapter Two: Varieties of Spiritual Performance and Notions of Truth Chapter Three: Local Spiritual Performance on North Atlantic and South Pacific Shores Chapter Four: Dead Man Performing?
