Taylor & Francis Understanding Southern Social Movements
Book SynopsisSouthern social movements have played an important role in shaping world history and politics. Nevertheless, scholarly literature on movements of the global South remains limited and restricted to testing the social movement theory which was developed in the North. This Northern-centric approach largely fails to provide a meaningful understanding of Southern movements because it is not directly applicable to the differing historical backgrounds, culture and socio-economic structures found in the South. Much of the uniqueness and complexity of Southern social movements has therefore been overlooked. This collection analyses recent events and developments in Southern social movements, introducing well-researched case studies from fifteen countries of the global South. Arranged in two parts, the volume examines firstly movements which focus on rights and quality of life issues, and secondly the post-2011 wave of uprisings which started with Tunisian and Egyptian movements. Taylor & Francis Routledge Handbook of Youth Sport
Book SynopsisThe Routledge Handbook of Youth Sport is a comprehensive survey of the latest research into young peopleâs involvement in sport. Drawing on a wide diversity of disciplines, including sociology, psychology, policy studies, coaching, physical education and physiology, the book examines the importance of sport during a key transitional period of our lives, from the later teenage years into the early twenties, and therefore helps us develop a better understanding of the social construction of young peopleâs lives. The book covers youth sport in all its forms, from competitive game-contests and conventional sport to recreational activities, exercise and lifestyle sport, and at all levels, from elite competition to leisure time activities and school physical education. It explores youth sport across the world, in developing and developed countries, and touches on some of the most significant themes and issues in contemporary sport studies, including physical activity aTrade Review"Youth sport is one of the largest, yet relatively understudied, segments of the sport industry. This work makes great strides in providing a multidisciplinary and global perspective on youth sport, with chapters written by leading researchers … Overall, this book is an excellent resource that takes a deep and wide approach to looking at what youth sport is and how it impacts the lives of both individual participants and society as a collective whole. Taylor & Francis Local Political Participation in Japan
Book SynopsisHow Do Japanese Citizens Participate Politically? Most Japanese citizens, perhaps with a bit of a chuckle, would answer that âaverageâ Japanese do not participate in politics. Japanese citizens perceive their government much more critically than citizens of neighboring countries. While many Japanese citizens participate in specific political acts such as signing candidate support cards, attending political rallies, or directly contacting politicians, they largely do not view these activities as political participation.
