ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Spatial Social Thought – Local Knowledge in
Book SynopsisGlobal, local, glocal reflecting on the area of world social science seems to be above all a matter of space. In these spatial dichotomies the global has no location and locations seem beyond this world. Discourses about world social science thought not only distinguish social thought along spaces where they are created. Space has become an attribute of thinking when social scientists reflect on the world of social thought: Southern, Western and Northern knowledge, the location in which thoughts are created, is not only a hint about the address of a thinker, but about the theoretical perspective through which social science thinkers look at social reality. Social thoughts are imagined as imprisoned in the spatial context in which they are created, and social science thinkers are imagined as representatives of spaces, whether these are defined politically, culturally, or in any other context in which their thoughts must be rooted as if the product of human minds was nothing but a voicing of the nature of spaces. And should we imagine the world social science arena, the encounter of all these spatially bound thoughts, as the encounter of many parochial knowledges that never manage to arrive at shared thoughts unless they already share the same spatial context? Why should we then at all meet each other? This book discusses examples of spatially constructed knowledges and the struggles these knowledges encounter as they seek to meet one another and escape from the mind prison of their spatial contexts. Or does the world social science arena after all only prove that the 'Western' dogma of contextualising social thought is a dead end road for social thought -- everywhere?Table of ContentsForeword Section I: Global Social Thought 1. ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Migrant Friendships in a Super-Diverse City:
Book SynopsisThis timely book offers an integrative and critical approach to the conceptualization of diversity of social ties in contemporary urban migrant populations. It explores the informal relationships of migrants in London and how the construction and the dynamics of their social ties function as a part of urban sociality within the super-diversity of London. Based on the results of a qualitative study of Russian-speaking migrants, it targets the four main themes of transnationalism, ethnicity, cosmopolitanization, and friendship. Acknowledging the complexity of the ways in which contemporary migrants rely on social relationships, the author argues that this complexity cannot be fully grasped by theories of transnationalism or explanations of ethnic communities alone. Instead, one can gather a closer understanding of migrant sociality when adding the analysis of informal relationships in different locations and with different subjects. This book suggests that friendship should be seen as an important concept for all research on migrant social connections.Trade Review"Drawing on a range of innovative research methods, Migrant Sociality in a Super Diverse City presents an original and empirically compelling picture of the Russian-speaking diaspora in London. This book is a must for European migration scholars."-Dr. Alan Latham, Senior Lecturer, University College London"This book offers fascinating insights into the experiences of a neglected migrant group in London while also providing careful analysis of the multicultural dynamics of a super-diverse city. Darya Malyutina has opened up a new strand of migration studies"-Dr. Claire Dwyer, Reader in Human Geography, Co-Director of the Migration Research Unit, University College London"The book challenges those perspectives which claim that common origins and immigrantstatus are a sufficient basis for building relationships in a super-diverse city. Russian-speaking migrants constantly evaluate and negotiate the main threads of their social life and Malyutinas book captures the intricacies of these processes. The reader may feel that there is still room for methodological clarifications; perhaps a sub-section focused on these aspects could be useful. The author succeeds in carrying out the overall purpose of the book and her appealing study adds valuable knowledge about a highly heterogeneous social life in a super-diverse context." ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon How the Social Sciences Think About the World's
Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the new millennium, the social sciences discover an epochal turn making it necessary to revolutionise their theory-building: As a response to what they call the globalisation of the social, they find the need to globalise their theorising as well. It is odd to discover after two centuries of colonialism and imperialism, after two world wars and several economic world crises that there is a world beyond the national socials; it is even more strange that the social sciences globalise their theorising by comparing theories about nationally confined socials and by creating all sorts of, preferably, local theories, just as if any national social was a secluded social biotope. Discussing how to globalise the social sciences, they argue that globalising social science theorising means finding a way of theorising that must, above all, be liberated from scientism in order to allow a provincialisation of thinking. Not surprisingly, the globalising social sciences also rediscover mythological and moral thinking as a means for a true scientific universalism. Michael Kuhns book presents many thought-provoking arguments on the oddities of the globalising social sciences and on how these oddities are not accidents, but a consequence of the nature of how the social sciences theorise about the social.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Towards a New Russian Work Culture: Can Western
Book SynopsisThis innovative book offers a fresh perspective on the national work culture of Russia and the substantial role foreign institutional and cultural impact has had in shaping it. Russia's contemporary work culture is understood as a national system supplemented by new values and attitudes that have been adopted through the mediation of foreign individuals and corporations or in response to the challenges of Western competition. It is argued that the foreign factor triggers change in the landscape of Russia's work culture, the scope of which depends on the type of influence. However, there is a certain core of the work culture that remains resistant to any external impact.Trade ReviewThis volume is by no means just an exposition of yet another point of view on the phenomenon of Russian work culture and its role in Russias modernization breakthroughs. It presents an unexpected and original approach, an absolutely new perspective of this seemingly old topic. On the one hand, the authors consider Russias national work culture in the context of foreign influence and test it for resistance to external pressures. On the other hand, they reveal the foreign trace in its fabric ― the features that were introduced and internalized in the course of direct and indirect contacts with foreign cultures. For the authors, Russian national work culture is not a finished, static entity, but a dynamic system that is in permanent interaction with (predominantly) Western culture and has largely developed in direct competition with it. It is this approach that makes this book exceptionally appealing. -- Vladimir N. ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Informal Healthcare in Contemporary Russia:
Book SynopsisThis volume deals with one of the most understudied aspects of everyday life in Russian society. Its main heroes are the providers of goods and services to whom people turn for healthcare instead of official medical institutions. A wide range of agents is describedfrom network marketing companies to 'folk' journals on health as well as healers, complementary medicine specialists, and religious organizations. Krasheninnikovas book is based on rich empirical observations and avoids both positive and critical assessment of the analyzed phenomena. Her investigation pays particular attention to the legal, social, and economic status of informal healthcare providers. She demonstrates that these agents tend to flourish in bigger towns rather than in small settlements, where public healthcare is lacking. The study reveals the important role of institutions that are generally not related to alternative medicine, such as pharmacies, libraries, and church shops. The result is a vivid and thorough introduction to the world of self-medication and alternative healing in contemporary Russia. A special emphasis was made on the flexibility of boundaries between formal and informal healthcare due to the evolution of rules and regulations.Table of ContentsForeword; Goals & Tools of Informal Healthcare Sociography; Agents in the Markets For Health Products; Health From the Garden, Forest, & Market: Procuring & Selling Gifts of Nature; Shadow & Respectable Alternative Medicine: From Healers to "Complementary" Specialists; Religious Institutions: Health Concerns & Commerce on Health Problems; The "Informal Healthcare" Framework: Information Markets; Afterword.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Patriotic Education in Contemporary Russia:
Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive study of the social roots of citizen raising in contemporary Russia. It traces the development of governmental patriotic programs in recent decades, discusses how the Soviet past and political traditions influence todays system of patriotism formation, and presents numerous examples illustrating real-life processes in current patriotic education. While the topics of patriotism and patriotic education are highly politicised, this study approaches them from a sociological perspective. It identifies the basic model of patriotic education as a fairly stable structure born of the values and attitudes of different agents: teachers, school administrators, and civil servants. Patriotic education in Russia is shown as a particular example of how a political idea can lead to the formation of social structures, and how, in time, those social structures can lead to the restoration of the original political idea.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Ukraine's Post-Communist Mass Media: Between
Book SynopsisNatalya Ryabinska calls into question the commonly held opinion that the problems with media reform and press freedom in former Soviet states merely stem from the cultural heritage of their communist (and pre-communist) past. Focusing on Ukraine, she argues that, in the period after the fall of communism, peculiar new obstacles to media independence have arisen. They include the telltale structure of media ownership, with news reporting being concentrated in the hands of politically engaged business tycoons, the fuzzy and contradictory legislation of the media realm, and the informal institutions of political interference in mass media. The book analyzes interrelationships between politics, the economy, and media in Ukraine, especially their shadowy sides guided by private interests and informal institutions. Being embedded in comparative politics and post-communist media studies, it helps to understand the nature and workings of the Ukrainian media system situated in-between democracy and authoritarianism. It offers insights into the inner logic of Ukraines political system and institutional arrangement in the post-Soviet period. Based on empirical data of 19942013, this study also highlights many of the barriers to democratic reforms that have been persisting in Ukraine since the Revolution of Dignity of 20132014.Trade ReviewThis book serves as a guide for understanding both the current predicament of the Ukrainian media as well as its historical precedents and development over time. ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon The Instrumentalisation of Mass Media in
Book SynopsisFocusing on the case of Russia during Putins first two presidential terms, this book examines media manipulation strategies in electoral authoritarian regimes. Which instruments and approaches do incumbent elites employ to skew media coverage in favour of their preferred candidate in a presidential election? What effects do these strategies have on news content? Based on two case studies of the presidential election campaigns in Russia in 2000 and in 2008, this investigation identifies the critical internal mechanisms according to which these regimes work. Looking at the same country, while it transformed from a competitive into a hegemonic authoritarian regime, allows one to make a diachronic comparison of these two regime types based on the Most-Similar Systems Design. The book explicates the subtle differences between competitive and hegemonic regimes, different types of media manipulation strategies, the diverging extent of media instrumentalisation, various interactions among state actors, large business owners, the media, and journalists, the respective effects that all these factors and interactions have on media content, and the peculiar types of bias prevalent in each type of regime. This deep exploration of post-Soviet politics is based on extensive review of documents, interviews with media professionals, and quantitative as well as qualitative content analyses of news media during two Russian presidential election campaigns.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Hybrid Regimes: Types & Measurements; Electoral Manipulations; Instrumentalisation of the Media; Strategies of Media Manipulation: The Case of Russia; Analysis of News Content: Presidential Election Campaigns 2000 & 2008; Conclusions.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Revolution & War in Contemporary Ukraine: The
Book SynopsisWhat are the reasons behind, and trajectories of, the rapid cultural changes in Ukraine since 2013? This volume highlights: the role of the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian-Ukrainian war in the formation of Ukrainian civil society; the forms of warfare waged by Moscow against Kyiv, including information and religious wars; Ukrainian and Russian identities and cultural realignment; sources of destabilisation in Ukraine and beyond; memory politics and Russian foreign policies; the Kremlins geopolitical goals in its 'near abroad'; and factors determining Ukraines future and survival in a state of war. The studies included in this collection illuminate the growing gap between the political and social systems of Ukraine and Russia. The anthology illustrates how the Ukrainian revolution of 20132014, Russias annexation of the Crimean peninsula, and its invasion of eastern Ukraine have altered the post-Cold War political landscape and, with it, the regional and global power and security dynamics.Trade Review"This book explores the Ukrainian crisis using a different approach, not often seen in other works. The authors have attempted to view the Ukrainian crisis not at the level of competition between superpowers and the issue of East and West, but from a social and identity perspective. In this they have been successful. As a result, the reader gains a more thorough understanding of events and better perceives the complexities of the tensions between Ukraine and Russia and, hence, between Russia and the West...."Ghasem Torabi (2018) Revolution and War in Contemporary Ukraine. ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon border and bordering – Politics, Poetics,
Book SynopsisBorder and Bordering: Politics, Poetics, Precariousness focuses on the idea of border and its various geopolitical, sociocultural, and cognitive incarnations. In recent times, border has emerged as a common trope in contemporary language with phenomena such as bordering, borderless, building borders, breaking borders, crossing borders, porous borders, and shifting borders. Whether concrete or shadow, borders are omnipresent. The volume contains sixteen essays on various aspects of thinking border as well as border-thinking in literature, philosophy, historiography, strategic studies, films, and TV series. Such a collection is symptomatic of the very interdisciplinarity of border and the varied experiences of bordering as manifested in different modes of expression. This study of the multiplicity of experiences is intrinsic to our understanding of border, so much so that borders can only be read through an interdisciplinary approach. This interdisciplinarity is immanent to the concept of border and imminent (to come) to the phenomenon of bordering. Also, the volume quite explicitly deals with themetaphorsof border(s): as border(s) may not necessarily be always visible and tangible but also cognitive and metaphysical. This volume intends to attract not only academics but all readers, and that is precisely the reason why it has been designed in such a way. This book, therefore, is not yet-another volume on critical border studies and area studies. In doing border, the book enables us to go beyond the boundaries of border studies and area studiesas its authors believe that studies of border studies and area studies have become as regimented as the borders of the nation-state.Trade ReviewNever before in human history did the issues of border and border crossing figure so prominently as they do at the present time. Large-scale migrations, forced or voluntary, in the age of transnationalism have foregrounded debates about the relevance of national borders. Recent surveys conducted by social scientists demonstrate how economic and social transactions continue across borders despite stringent surveillance of border areas. At the same time, citizenship and statelessness have become a raging issue. In the context of such a situation the publication of the edited volume entitled Border and Bordering: Politics, Poetics, Precariousness which includes articles on actual and metaphorical dimensions of border studies is very timely. Could we have been prepared for this? Totally. It's all been there before: in the movies. Science fiction films and series have always dealt with the future and its possible course, social changes, and conflicts in a speculative way. Denis Newiak searches through the scenes of pandemic movies and series to bring out ideas for how to cope with the social, political, and economic challenges of the crisis. Can the scenarios developed in film help us to pass this test-and to emerge from it with greater strength?

Book SynopsisThe emergence of global knowledge societies is recently questioning the meaning and relevance of local knowledge in the context of Southern countries. Women have proved to be the central actors in the multiple channels of local-global networking, using these new social ties for the negotiation of old and new elements of knowledge, scientific knowledge and development discourses. The inherent politicisation of knowledge and the direct objective of transforming societal institutions are not only signs of resistance against global hegemony, but serve for a new definition and for a defence of local culture and of local knowledge.

Springer, India, Private Ltd Subaltern Urbanisation in India: An Introduction
Book SynopsisThis volume decentres the view of urbanisation in India from large agglomerations towards smaller urban settlements. It presents the outcomes of original research conducted over three years on subaltern processes of urbanization. The volume is organised in four sections. A first one deals with urbanisation dynamics and systems of cities with chapters on the new census towns, demographic and economic trajectories of cities and employment transformation. The interrelations of land transformation, social and cultural changes form the topic of the “land, society, belonging” section based on ethnographic work in various parts of India (Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu). A third section focuses on public policies, governance and urban services with a set of macro-analysis based papers and specific case studies. Understanding the nature of production and innovation in non-metropolitan contexts closes this volume. Finally, though focused on India, this research raises larger questions with regard to the study of urbanisation and development worldwide.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisSocial trust is the key to, indeed the very success formula for, well-functioning and harmonious societies like the Norwegian one, both researchers and politicians claim. But can there be too much trust in a society? Can trust make us dull and naive? Does Norwegians'' great, almost boundless trust in authorities and state institutions leave the way open for corruption, abuse of power and national security threats - and for us Norwegians to a large extent tolerating incompetence? Yes, claim Nina Witoszek and Eva Joly, who in this book deal with what they call Norwegian trust pathologies. The authors show how the Norwegian trust has backfired on us, and has been abused by, among others, Norwegian peace brokers, tax lawyers, business leaders, politicians and the state oil company Equinor. They recognize that trust is an important social good. But it must be accompanied by common sense.

University Press of Southern Denmark Social and Economic Development in the
Book SynopsisThe Arab Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE) have over the past decades moved from near obscurity to prominence among actors in the global economy. This rise of the Gulf was facilitated by plentiful income from oil and gas and by the gradual process by which the economic centre of the world is shifting eastward. But first and foremost it has been a result of conscious policies conceived and implemented by the Gulf states to catch up with the developed world and not least to place their countries on a developmental trajectory which will secure the populations a sustainable livelihood in the future. This book recognises the significant developmental results achieved in the Gulf states over the past half of a century but focuses on the detrimental and disrupting effects created by the economic anomaly of sudden and massive influx of oil revenues. Effects such as the growth of rentier mentality, the crowding out of productive activities, the resulting lack of economic diversification. The oil-based development model worked well when the populations were small and the income from oil plentiful. With rapidly increasing populations and rising popular demands on the governments, this model can no longer adequately support these societies. The book investigates various elements of how the governments in the Gulf region tackle the difficult and often painful transition toward an ordinary type of economy, where wealth in society is a created by the skills and hard work of its population. Issues such as economic diversification, societal planning, institutional change, social reforms, educational achievements, demographic growth, job creation and the significant reliance on migrant labour are investigated.

University Press of Southern Denmark Impact of Changes in Life-Stage on Time
Book SynopsisThis paper investigates the relation between women and men''s life stages and their time allocation: paid work, household work, childcare and leisure time, and, in particular, how this allocation changes when moving from one stage to another stage. We use a new Danish panel dataset merged with Danish administrative register data, which allows for analysing the impact of individual, endogenous characteristics of the respondents such as preferences for doing specific activities. We find that the labour supply of fathers to pre-school children is not different from that of young men without children, while there is a negative correlation between mothers to pre-school children and young women''s labour supply. Comparing fathers and mothers to school children with those to pre-school children, we find a positive correlation in both sexes labour supply. However, fixed effects estimations do not result in a reduction in mothers, nor in fathers, to pre-school children''s labour supply indicating that there are some inborn characteristics for the other life-stage changes which are not revealed by doing ordinary cross-sectional analyses.

Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the new millennium, honour-related violence was at the very forefront of public attention in the Netherlands. The emergence of the issue was facilitated by evolving discourses on multiculturalism and was driven by four events, the shootings of Kezban, Hassan, Zarife and Gül. This combination of processes contributed to a reconceptualization of domestic violence against migrant women into honour-related violence. Moreover, the extensive media coverage of these shootings contributed to a moral panic about this issue: honour killings were perceived as a sign of the failing integration of migrants. Together these processes provide an explanation for the widespread public attention for this issue and the emergence of an honour-related violence field. This case study illustrates that the emergence of an issue-based organizational field is a multi-layered process in which various actors, actions and processes come together and influence each other.

Book SynopsisChildren were practically considered the private property of parents, and their status never seen fit for public discussion, till the middle of the twentieth century. As children are defenseless and easy to target, they suffer the most in any crisis, be it war, natural disaster or any other type of crime or calamity. Among children, however, the girl child suffers even more, as she faces double discrimination because of her tender age and her gender. In the mid-1990s, instances of reported abuse of girls in the form of foeticide, infanticide, prostitution and sexual exploitation, especially in zones of war and ethnic cleansing such as the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, became rampant. This led to the girl child receiving separate identification as a group for the first time in the Beijing Declaration of the 4th UN World Conference on Women in 1995. In India, the status and treatment of girls in society ranges between inadequate and deplorable, with the girl child being victimized in several ways. This book focuses on both the development (through enhancement of the nutritional, educational and health status) and welfare (through freedom from physical and psychosocial stress due to deprivation, exploitation and the resultant feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem) aspects of the girl child’s existence. It covers in detail all facets of the well-being of the girl child that are of concern to governments as well as international organizations. It explains in detail the challenges faced by government and non-governmental organizations in implementing any welfare and development initiatives for girls, including the discriminatory social norms impacting programme and policy implementation. It closely explores the differences between the theory and practice aspects of prevalent governmental programmes and policies. In the concluding parts, the book makes several policy recommendations and also seeks to lay out a future roadmap for the well-being of girls in India. HarperCollins India Being the Change: In the Footsteps of the Mahatma
Book SynopsisThis book tells the stories of social justice warriors who are quietly powering the country''s progress by being agents of real change. Words Mahatma Gandhi lived by-such as ''India lives in villages and to serve the poor we will have to serve in the villages'' or that ''truth may get troubled but it never gets defeated''-are their moral compass. They have shown by personal example how adopting Bapu''s ideology as a way of life can be personally enriching and socially beneficial. The people in this book mostly work away from the spotlight. Through entirely Gandhian ways, they have proved that his methods, such as satyagraha, still help effect real change and progress for the people most in need. Many have won awards and recognition, but largely their stirring stories have remained untold-a gap that Being the Change seeks to fill.

Aspekt B.V., Uitgeverij A World without States
Book SynopsisHumanity is still living in the transitioning period from an animalistic to a humane existence. This is characterized by matters including war, violence and inhumanity. It is not surprising. Today the entire surface of the earth is divided into states, and communities that only care for their own interests. It is exactly this system of states that obstructs a fast and effective approach to large problems such as lasting peace, security and the habitability of the world. They are, after all, global problems. The system of states divides humanity into hostile units and has established a political barrier for a solution to the problem. There is only one solution for this problem and that is ending the sovereignty of the 193 states. Retain the right for private political policies, take away the ability to bully and threaten other countries, to own armed forces, to commit inhumane crimes. But who should govern us? A world government! A government that merely focuses on world problems. Because the solution to these problems is more important than local issues. Without a global authority humanity is left empty-handed. Dago Steenis (1925) wrote a remarkably positive book, something that is actually more than a book, it is a thought that can be passed on. Not like a pamphlet, but based on his speech. According to Steenis history cannot be a linear concept, not a static process, without progress. On the contrary. History precisely demonstrates that we have a reason to be optimistic, developments of mankind are evolutionary, and an increasing form of human growth and potency. Since the emergence of culture man gradually replaced natural evolution by cultural evolution.
