    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe association of exclusionist and nationalist relations, termed ethnocentrism, has been previously explored within single-country contexts. Studies have shown that dispositional factors, such as social identity and personality traits, affect ethnocentric reactions and that attitudes differ between social categories. However, broader national and international explanations have been neglected in the literature. This book fills this major gap by providing a unique account of the relationship between nationalist attitudes and the exclusion of migrants across a range of European countries, the US, Canada and Australia. Drawing on a variety of comparative surveys, the authors assess whether ethnic exclusionist reactions and nationalist attitudes are indeed systematically related across countries, and whether variations in such attitudes reflect country-level as well as individual-level differences. The authors consider the multidimensionality of the concepts of nationalism and excTrade Review’The authors’ research and arguments impact multiple disciplines, help the reader understand how the peoples of today’s world interrelate with each other, and should not be ignored in any study on ethnocentrism...This is an intriguing study that is extremely well-organized and supported by strong hypotheses, experiments and results...a thought-provoking book...this book should have a lasting impact on multiple disciplines and any individual who reads it.’ Ethnic and Racial Studies ’...the separate entries are well-integrated...and collectively contribute to a coherent social-psychological theory of exclusionist attitudes...I recommend this book as a good place to start to understand the social-psychological dimensions of negative attitudes toward immigrants...’ Contemporary Sociology ’This book fills current research gaps on the issue of nationalism and social closure by...providing a comparative analysis of ethnocentrism.’ Sociological AbstractsTable of ContentsContents: Introduction, Marcel Coenders, Mérove Gijsberts, Louk Hagendoorn and Peer Scheepers. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Ethnology Myth and Politics Anthropologizing

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book offers a critical overview of Croatian ethnology written by the most prominent Croatian ethnologist/ anthropologist in the second half of the 20th century - Dunja Rihtman-Augustin (recently deceased). She was the first Croatian ethnologist to break with the long established tradition of diffusionist (culture area) studies of her contemporaries and start to anthropologize Croatian ethnology. This book, compiled and completed by Jasna Capo Zmegac, highlights some crucial remarks with regard to the relationship between ethnology and politics. They are formulated as a series of research questions and problems, including: the role of folk culture as mythomoteur, cannonization of the folk culture, nationalization of the peasants in the 19th century and the role of ethnology. This vividly written text offers an exceptional insight into Croatian ethnological developments in the past century, as well as into crucial ruptures in Croatian society which have had important repercussions onTrade Review’This book should be included on a list of readings for any graduate student in anthropology or political science anticipating research in Croatia.’ Slavic Review '...presents a wonderful insight into Croatian ethnology and anthropology...the essays are brilliant exercises in historical sketches combined with Rihtman-Augustin's impressive knowledge.' Anthropos - International Review of Anthropology and LinguisticsTable of ContentsContents: Between ethnicity and nation; Vuk Karadzic: past and present or on the history of folk culture; The Zadruga between real and imagined order; Antun Radic: peasants into Croats; Distancing ethnology from politics; Ethnology during socialism and after; Ethnology and the ethnomyth; Anthropologizing ethnology; The ethno-anthropologist in his native field: to observe or to witness?; The ICTY in the Hague and anthropological expertise?; Bibliography; Index.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a new and expanded edition of a classic case-study in the medicalization of ADHD, originally published in 1976. The book centres on an empirical study of the process of identifying hyperactive children, providing a perceptive and accessible introduction to the concepts and issues involved. In this revised edition, Peter Conrad sets the original study in context, demonstrating the continuing relevance of his research. He highlights the issues at stake, outlining recent changes in our understanding of ADHD and reviewing recent sociological research. Peter Conrad is Harry Coplan Professor of Social Sciences at Brandeis University, USA. He has written extensively in the area of medical sociology, publishing nine books and over eighty articles and chapters.Trade Review’Peter Conrad's Identifying Hyperactive Children is at the same time a classic study of the labelling of deviant behaviour and a prescient view of what has since become a major social problem. It remains the best sociological analysis of hyperactivity. Its reissue with an informative introduction and recent paper on adult ADHD is welcome news for the sociology of deviance and social control.’ Allan Horwitz, Rutgers University, USA ’This book is a classic work in medical sociology. It served as a jumping-off point for Peter Conrad's development of the theory of medicalization, which has been central to medical sociology, and increasingly to medicine and other fields. It is fitting that one of the senior scholars in medical sociology can revisit the work that began his career, and show us how incredibly relevant it is three decades later. Conrad updates his work by showing increases in ADHD diagnosis, how adults now are increasingly diagnosed, and how the greatly expanded power of pharmaceutical companies can cloud medical and personal judgment.’ Phil Brown, Brown University, USA ’Although first published thirty years ago this book remains one of the few sociological studies of what has become a major social problem - the medicalization of hyperactivity. Its re-issue with a new introduction and concluding chapter makes the book essential reading for all those concerned with medicalization in general and the case of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in particular. Immediately it will be clear how many of the concerns of the original book remain highly pertinent today, while the material that has been added highlights what has changed - in particular the expansion of ADHD to adults.’ Jonathan Gabe, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK ’...relevant and provocative...the attention to detail provides much to think about...this book is both challenging and sobering.’ Metapsychology Online '...a classic in social theory...a masterful accTable of ContentsContents: Series Editor's Preface; Introduction to the expanded edition; Foreword to the original edition, Mark A.
