Taylor & Francis Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society
Book SynopsisThe idea of a âleisure societyâ was in its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was predicted that the pattern of falling working hours which had been experienced in Western societies in the first half of the twentieth century would continue indefinitely. The leisure society has clearly not been realised. On the contrary: contemporary industrial societies seem to be characterised by a shortage of time, experienced as âtime squeezeâ and stress. The leisure society idea can be seen as the modern version of the age-old dream of a âlife of ease and plentyâ. This analytically and empirically rich book traces the idea in history, through biblical, classical Greek, medieval and nineteenth century utopian writings and into twentieth century concerns with dystopia and the impact of rapid technological change. The âleisure societyâ concept turns out to have been an elusive and short-lived phenomenon. For a variety of reasons, the trend towards shorter working hours ran out of steam in the last quarter of the twentieth century. However, while leisure scholars have deserted the topic, a diverse range of activists, including environmentalists, economists and feminists, continue to make the case for reducing working hours. Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? concludes that the on-going âstruggle for timeâ should be supported, for the sake of human health and well-being and for the sake of the planet. This is a valuable resource for students and academics in the fields of leisure studies, cultural studies, history, economics, sociology and political science. Trade Review"[Tony Veal] does a great job of offering a detailed overview of the leisure society debate and in setting the record straight by correcting some of the prevailing misconceptions about it. If anybody working within or outside leisure studies ever wanted to know what the predictions and ideas of leisure society were all about, they do not need to go any farther than this book." - Utsa Mukherjee Birkbeck, University of London, Annals of Leisure Research"[Tony Veal] does a great job of offering a detailed overview of the leisure society debate and in setting the record straight by correcting some of the prevailing misconceptions about it. This publication provides a remarkably detailed and accurate account of positions taken with regard to the leisure society by different authors, beginning from the 1930s until today … to those who will try, in the future, to say something new about the concept of the leisure society. Please first read Tony Veal’s book. He may have said it already. This is truly an encyclopedia of the leisure society." – Jiri Zuzanek, University of Waterloo, Loisir et Société / Society and Leisure"Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? authored by A. J. Taylor & Francis Ltd Cycling Activism
Book SynopsisThe first full-length study of cycling activism through the lens of social movement theory, this book demonstrates that, despite tremendous differences, bike activism can be understood as a continuous and connected activity spanning a century and a half and across continents. With examples from street protest to institutional lobbying, it emphasises cycling's current central importance to zero carbon transport futures, while showing that cycling activism is also not always about the bike or the cyclist, as successive generations of activists have used cycling to articulate different visions of freedom and autonomy. Moving from a consideration of social movement theory as a means to understand cycling activism, the author presents a series of case studies of collective action, organisations, networks and campaigns in order to illustrate and elaborate a theoretical model through which diverse campaigns and approaches to change can be understood. As such, Cycling Activism will aTable of ContentsContentsIntroduction A GenealogyAimsCycling as PoliticsA note on languageSection One: Theorising movement activism1) Cycling activism and social movements Introduction: Why Cycling activism?Cycling practicesUnderstanding collective actionDefining social movementsContext of analysisCycling studiesSocial movement studies and the politics of knowledgeConfiguring a research questionConclusions2) Movements, Mobilities and Messy Methods IntroductionDefining the field of study: cycling is not a "social movement"Framing activismWhy take action? Taylor & Francis Ltd Examining and Mitigating Sexual Misconduct in
Book SynopsisSexual Misconduct in any environment is a gross abuse of trust and this is no different within the sport world. Examining and Mitigating Sexual Misconduct in Sport outlines systemic and sociological explanations for why sport is a site of sexual misconduct. The authors in the text describe cultural realities and considerations sport stakeholders must acknowledge and be informed of to make sport a more equitable and safe space. Personal narratives from a variety of sport stakeholders, which unveil their lived experiences of sexual misconduct and humanize survivor stories in ways often ignored in sport and society, are shared. Authors offer recommendations to all sport stakeholders to mitigate incidents of and harm done by sexual misconduct. Guidelines and suggestions for sport stakeholder practices that better protect individuals in sport, address sexual misconduct when it occurs, and mitigate the harm and trauma experienced because of incidents of sexual misconduct areTrade Review"Tanya Prewitt-White and Leslee A. Fisher have taken on the ambitious task of illuminating the systemic problem of sexual misconduct in sport contexts, with critical examination of the behaviors of coaches, administrators, athletes, and community members which perpetuate the problem, deter justice for the perpetrators, and hinder healing for survivors. Importantly, the personal accounts of survivors inform and remind readers of the suffering endured and strength realized, evoking both compassion and a call to action to change the problem of sexual misconduct in sports."Dr. Kendahl M.
