Book SynopsisEven with the current rise in awareness of sexual and intimate diversity, monogamous relationships remain the cultural norm. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisSiblings and all the lateral relationships that follow from them are clearly important and their interaction is widely observed, particularly in creative literature. Yet in the social, psychological and political sciences, there is no theoretical paradigm through which we might understand them.Trade Review"Juliet Mitchell, brimming as usual with ideas, insights and reflections, has turned her attention to sibling relationships as the neglected and much underestimated influence on an individual’s identity formation. Love, hate, sexual experience, the shaping of gender roles, suffering and survival strategies are pursued as the sibling exchange. A work to provoke thought and discussion packed with real life and literary evidence." Olwen Hufton University of Oxford "In 1974, Mitchell’s Psychoanalysis and Feminism offered a major challenge to a resistant Anglo-Saxon feminism with her compelling case that psychoanalysis, most often seen by feminists to be part of the problem, was rather a powerful resource for feminist explanation and understanding of male domination, female oppression. Almost thirty years on, with Siblings, she has made a second, perhaps even more radical intervention. Her analysis of the lateral relations of siblings and peers promises to transform many of the recurrent issues and debates of contemporary feminism. ... This new book offers richly stimulating resources that should fuel feminist scholarship and debate for many years." Terry Lovell, Warwick UniversityTable of ContentsList of Illustrations. Preface. Book SynopsisA gripping and moving text which explores the wealth of human language diversity, how deeply it matters, and how we can best turn the tide of language endangerment In the new, thoroughly revised second edition of Words of Wonder: Endangered Languages and What They Tell Us, Second Edition (formerly called Dying Words: Endangered Languages and What They Have to Tell Us), renowned scholar Nicholas Evans delivers an accessible and incisive text covering the impact of mass language endangerment. The distinguished author explores issues surrounding the preservation of indigenous languages, including the best and most effective ways to respond to the challenge of recording and documenting fragile oral traditions while they're still with us. This latest edition offers an entirely new chapter on new developments in language revitalisation, including the impact of technology on language archiving, the use of social media, and autodocumentation by speakers. It also includes a number of new sections on how recent developments in language documentation give us a fuller picture of human linguistic diversity. Seeking to answer the question of why widespread linguistic diversity exists in the first place, the book weaves in portraits of individual last speakers and anecdotes about linguists and their discoveries. It provides access to a companion website with sound files and embedded video clips of various languages mentioned in the text. It also offers: A thorough introduction to the astonishing diversity of the world's languagesComprehensive exploration of how the study of living languages can help us understand deep human history, including the decipherment of unknown texts in ancient languagesDiscussions of the intertwining of language, culture and thought, including both fieldwork and experimental studies An introduction to the dazzling beauty and variety of oral literature across a range of endangered languagesIn-depth examinations of the transformative effect of new technology on language documentation and revitalisation Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students studying language endangerment and preservation and for any reader who wants to discover what the full diversity of the world's languages has to teach us, Words of Wonder: Endangered Languages and What They Tell Us, Second Edition, will earn a place in the libraries of linguistics, anthropology, and sociology scholars with a professional or personal interest in endangered languages and in the full wealth of the world's languages.Table of ContentsPreface to the Second Edition vi Acknowledgments for the First Edition ix Prologue xiv About the Companion Website xx Part I The Library of Babel 1 1 Warramurrungunji’s Children 5 2 Four Millennia to Tune In 24 Part II a Great Feast of Languages 45 3 A Galapagos of Tongues 49 4 Your Mind in Mine: Social Cognition in Grammar 70 Part III Faint Tracks in An Ancient Wordscape: Languages and Deep World History 83 5 Sprung from Some Common Source 85 6 Travels in the Logosphere: Hooking Ancient Words onto Ancient Worlds 105 7 Keys to Decipherment: How Living Languages Can Unlock Forgotten Scripts 129 Part IV Ratchetting Up Each Other: the Coevolution of Language, Culture, and Thought 153 8 Trellises of the Mind: How Language Trains Thought 157 9 What Verse and Verbal Art Can Weave 185 Part V On the Brink 205 10 Listening While We Can 207 Part VI Afterword 231 Epilogue: In the Shade of the Casuarina 233 Outro: Reawakening the Word 236 References 255 Maps 280 Index of Languages and Language Families 284 Index 290

Book SynopsisEven before 2020, chronic loneliness was a private experience of profound anguish that had become a public health crisis. Since then it has reached new heights. While we can''t cure loneliness the way we can cure strep throat or even cancer, there are concrete, actionable and effective things we can do to manage it and keep it from becoming chronic. Book SynopsisRelationships fall apart, marriages fail, couples break up – it happens to us all. Time corrodes passion and the routines of daily life kill the excitement that surrounds the emotion of the first encounter. The difficulty of uniting sexual pleasure with love, which Freud considered to be the most common neurosis in any love life, has become emblematic of a truth that seems undeniable: desire is destined to die if its object is not constantly renewed, if we do not change partner, if it is closed for too long in the restrictive chamber of the same bond. And yet what happens to these bonds when one of the two partners betrays the other, when the promise fails, when there is another emotional experience cloaked in secrecy and deceit? What happens if the traitor then begs forgiveness? Are they asking to be loved again and, having declared that it is not like it used to be, now want everything to go back to how it was? Should we make fun of lovers in their attempts to make love last? Or should we try to face up to the experience of betrayal, with the offence caused by the person we love most? Should we not perhaps attempt to praise forgiveness in love?Trade ReviewFascinating and provocative, this book sizzles with critical passion. It is fed by a deep knowledge of the vagaries of love in our nihilistic, hyper-hedonist times and by psychoanalytic insight. The addition of riveting cases makes this a pithy and important work. Lisa Appignanesi, author of Everyday MadnessTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroduction1. It challenges assumptions about the extent to which such activities declined in the period, and hence about the impact of Protestantism and other changes to the culture of the elite. A major contribution to the literature on marriage and sexual relationships, family, kinship and gender, it is aimed at an academic readership in the fields of social and political history.Table of ContentsIntroduction1 Background and legal framework2 The extent of bastardy among the elite3 The role and status of the mistress4 Gentlewomen and their lovers5 The ‘wronged’ partner6 The bastard childrenConclusionIndex

Hodder & Stoughton Love and Choice: A Radical Approach to Sex and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat, in your relationships, have you chosen? What would you choose, if you felt able? In Love and Choice, therapist and journalist Lucy Fry explains why relationships should start with these simple questions. Most of us are brought up with a blueprint for our most important and intimate relationships. It comes from family, the media, or even the government's tax policies, and the message is simple: The (gold) standard for a romantic relationship is one that is heterosexual, between two people, and monogamous. Lucy invites us to examine this blueprint consciously, accept that it may not be for everyone, and consider something outside the ordinary. By offering us a window into a life built on choice, and a radical approach, Lucy helps us explore what we really want, and what our relationship needs. With care, wit and candour, Fry blends insightful psychological and philosophical ideas with case studies drawn from interviews with experts, real people, and experiences in her own life. Love and Choice gives readers everything they need to choose what, who, and how to love.Trade ReviewLove and Choice is a refreshingly different relationship book, guiding us through this troubling terrain with kind words and a steady hand. As always, Lucy Fry conveys the feeling of love in a way few others manage, from excruciating to transcendent and everything in between. This time, by sharing others' stories alongside her own, she also captures the diversity of love experiences in a way I've seldom seen. So, while this is an important addition to the conscious non-monogamy literature, it is also way more than that. It encompasses diversities of singledom and soloness, conscious and unconscious monogamy, celibacies, sex work relationships, and more. Through the book we learn the restrictive nature of both the outer cultural relationship rules, and our own relational traumas and scripts, and how we might open these up to enable more choice. We also learn how it is possible to embrace moments of relationship 'failure' as just as vital and beautiful as any happily-ever-after. * Meg-John Barker, author of Rewriting The Rules *A welcome addition to the list of intelligent books that encourage us to think about relationships in more sophisticated ways * Rosie Wilby, author of The Breakup Monologues *

Book SynopsisTraditional family structures are adapting to make room for children conceived in previously unimaginable ways. Whole industries and internet-enabled communities are being built around reproductive technologies. And there’s more change coming as science continues to move forward. Combining intimate personal stories with cutting-edge research, Reconceptions invites readers to reconsider their own ideas about parenthood and embrace a new vision of the meaning of family. In 2012, Rachel Lehmann-Haupt, an award-winning journalist, chose to begin a family on her own as a single mother by choice. In the years since her son was born, Rachel’s interest in collaborative reproduction has only grown - leading her to search for pioneers in reproductive science and the different permutations of families that this science is making possible. In Reconceptions, she shares intimate stories from the bleeding edge of society’s redefinition of family - including her own experience of creating a new kind of tribe with her son’s “dosies,” or donor siblings, and their parents. In these pages, readers will meet: Tyra, the egg donor and professional surrogate who doesn’t want kids of her own, but stays in touch with several of the families she’s helped in the conception of their children. Sam, the single father by choice who worked with a surrogate and donor egg to conceive his son who he is now raising with his girlfriend. Rob and Scotty, the gay couple whose egg donor is now a friend and fixture at family social gatherings. The author’s Facebook group of mothers who conceived their children with the same sperm donor - and how the group served as a much much-needed support system through the worst of the COVID pandemic.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis** Includes foreword from Susie Green, CEO of charity Mermaids ** Mama, something went wrong in your tummy. And it made me come out as a boy instead of a girl. When Marlo Mack's three year old says these words, she's not surprised - but she's completely unprepared. Marlo gave birth to a beautiful baby boy - M - and brushed his pleas for pink clothes and dresses aside as a young child's playful experimentation with gender. But when her son begs to be put back in her tummy because he came out wrong, she knows she must listen more closely. How to Be a Girl is a raw and unflinching memoir of a mother grappling with her child's transition. Always wanting to support M, Marlo - whose podcast of the same name has over 1.3 million downloads - finds her liberal values surprisingly challenged, and as she learns more about gender and its varied expressions, she questions what being a girl - or a boy, or something else entirely - really means.Trade ReviewThis beautifully written book is about parental love, pure and simple. And I don't mean just the rhetorical "love" claimed by all parents when things are going easy, but the unconditional "LOVE" required when faced with something in your child that makes them-and you-potential pariahs. There is so much to learn here from Marlo and her gorgeous daughter M. -- Christine Burns MBE, author and transgender activistI'm so grateful to Marlo and her daughter for sharing their story. As a dad who is trans, I'm excited to read it with my own child one day - to have this among the diversity of experiences we can explore and reflect on. Despite the obstacles all kinds of trans families face, resources like this make me feel lucky to be trans and to be a parent at this moment in time. -- Freddy McConnellThis book is powerful because of its honesty and openness. -- Fox Fisher, artist, film-maker and campaignerMarlo Mack's How to Be a Girl is an extraordinary mother-daughter story and also a wondrously ordinary one, not just about a mother's unconditional love but also about listening to one another, learning together, following your mama-gut as well as your mama-heart, and leaping into the unknown with a child - your child - as your guide. -- Laurie Frankel , New York Times-bestselling author of This Is How It Always Is and One Two ThreeHow to Be a Girl exemplifies the true meaning of unconditional love ... -- Jazz JenningsA stunning story. . . . Smart, honest, and deeply personal, this illuminating work should be required reading. * Publishers Weekly *Transgender children are in the news. Bobbing in the sea of headlines is a growing number of memoirs written by parents of transgender kids. . . . The latest is among the best-Marlo Mack's How to Be a Girl. . . Sara PascoeIn early 2013, comedian Rosie Wilby found herself at a crossroads with everything she'd ever believed about romantic relationships. When people asked, 'who's the love of your life?' there was no simple answer. Did they mean her former flatmate with whom she'd experienced the most ecstatic, heady, yet ultimately doomed, fling? Or did they mean the deep, lasting companionate partnerships that gave her a sense of belonging and family? Surely, most human beings need both. Mixing humour, heartache and science, Is Monogamy Dead? details Rosie's very personal quest to find out why Western society is clinging to a concept that doesn't work that well for some of us and is laden with ambiguous assumptions.Trade ReviewBittersweet, original, honest and so funny. Book Synopsis Telling the story of the author's time living with a Kazakh family in a small village in western Mongolia, this book contextualizes the family’s personal stories within the broader history of the region. It looks at the position of the Kazakh over time in relation to Tsarist Russian, Soviet, Chinese and Mongolian rule and influence. These are stories of migration across generations, bride kidnappings and marriage, domestic violence and alcoholism, adoption and family, and how people have coped in the face of political and economic crisis, poverty and loss, and, perhaps most enduringly, how love and family persist through all of this.Trade Review “What starts as an account of cultural encounters unfolds as a highly informative, entertaining, self-reflexive narrative told with a great measure of empathy and humanism that demonstrates the ultimate unity of humanity.” • Ildikó Bellér-Hann, University of Copenhagen “I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is both insightful and touching to follow the story of one extended family over the years, and well into the past. In my view, this adds a significant piece of knowledge and reflection on a very little-known part of the world, to which the author had a unique access.” • Peter Finke, University of ZurichTable of Contents List of Illustrations Notes on Transliteration Family Tree Map of Central and Inner Asia Today Introduction Part I: First Introductions Chapter 1. Book SynopsisIn The Two-Parent Privilege, Melissa S. Kearney makes a provocative, data-driven case for marriage by showing how the institution's decline has led to a host of economic woes. Eschewing the religious and values-based arguments that have long dominated this conversation, Kearney shows how the greatest impacts of marriage are, in fact, economic: when two adults marry, their economic and household lives improve, offering a host of benefits not only for the married adults but for their children. Studies show that these effects are today starker, and more unevenly distributed, than ever before.Based on more than a decade of economic research, including her original work, Kearney shows that a household that includes two married parents holding steady at the higher end of the socioeconomic scale, increasingly rare among almost everyone else functions as an economic vehicle that advantages some children over others. As these trends of marriage and class continue, the compo

Book SynopsisDrawing on her own research as a psychologist and psychotherapist conducted over two years with interviews in real life situations the author provides an insight into the wedding experience from the mother's point of view and explores the complexities of family relationships that this rite of passage can expose. The book offers the reader the chance to follow several women from different cultural backgrounds through the time leading up to and beyond their child's wedding. It is structured around three pivotal stages of the wedding: the announcement of the engagement, the wedding preparations, and the big day itself. The analysis of these interviews forms the main part of the book. It follows the themes emerging from these interviews and explores them placing them in the context of thinking in analytic psychotherapy and family therapy. The book will not so much help readers to avoid wedding "stress", but rather help them to make sense of it.

Book SynopsisChild to Parent Violence and Abuse (CPVA) is a much misunderstood problem that affects the lives of millions of families around the world, possibly as many as one in ten. Despite this, and the lasting physical and psychological damage CPVA can cause, it is an underreported issue, and one that presents serious challenges to practitioners and support services - not least because it inverts our normal understanding of abuse within the family. With this book Helen Bonnick shares the knowledge that she has built up over many years specialising in CPVA as a social worker, practice educator and researcher. She brings this complex issue out of the shadows and provides much needed guidance to practitioners. Following an introductory chapter, setting the scene and discussing definitions and language, the book is divided into five sections, which develop an understanding of the main issues before moving on to a more structured approach to work in supporting families. `Five impossible things to believe' sets out five core issues in understanding an issue that many people still find hard to accept, setting the scene for future discussions. The second section, `Four traps to avoid', addresses myths and stereotypes, looking at beliefs and assumptions that can impact on the delivery of a service. The third section, `Three aspects of work with families' looks specifically at assessment and models of intervention, after some important consideration of the power issues at play. This is followed by a section on the difficulties emerging from our tendency to think in binary ways: `Two conflicting paradigms'; and lastly, `One thing that everyone can do'. The book closes with a final chapter for those interested in taking their learning further. Throughout, the easily digestible chapters are illustrated with real-life anecdotes and testimony from families who have faced CPVA. Above all, this is a book which brings the families' lives to the fore, and documents what they say helps, what hinders, and what they want to celebrate or protest. Each chapter includes a section called `What you can do', which may have questions to reflect on, or suggestions of action to continue the work of bringing greater attention and increased resources to this crucial field of family support.Table of ContentsIntroduction Part 1: Five impossible things to believe Chapter 1: How much? Forced to change their names to Faith and Sarah, they end up in two different countries with opposite slavery laws. Faith ends up in America, where slavery is still legal and slaves don't have any rights. Sarah ends up in a Victorian England and as the goddaughter of Queen Victoria. Can the two sisters reclaim their freedom and identity in a world that is trying to break them down and mold them to its coloniser's will?Based on the true story of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Breaking the Maafa Chain will take the readers on a journey of loss, survival, hope, identity and tradition.Trade ReviewPart fact, part fiction, Breaking the Maafa Chain is an important book, beautifully told. Domingo's premise is a bold and uncompromising one - taking what is known, the story of Salimatu, the 'black princess', Sarah Forbes Bonetta, and weaving through it the story of her fictionalised sister, Fatmata, Faith. Domingo makes an eloquent point: that although the sisters suffered different fates, both were unfree: Fatmata enslaved in North America and Salimatu gifted to Queen Victoria, and utterly at her whim.It is a story that has resonance today, where Meghan Markle was expected to shape herself to a white institution, to belong. * Guinevere Glasfurd *Part fact, part fiction, Breaking the Maafa Chain is an important book, beautifully told. Now Anni Domingo has brought her vividly to life in this richly imagined and compellingly told tale. Breaking the Maafa Chain is a gift to readers everywhere. * Aminatta Forna *Anni Domingo's Breaking the Maafa Chain is so rich in detail and dialogue, it is simply seductive. She captures so well, a little girl, Salimatu, who recalls the security of her family life, who is transported to a bewildering future in England to become Sarah, where she has to stand strong and survive. Not only will this book be read for the sheer enjoyment of a beautifully written novel, but for the learning gained. It is a historical novel that cannot be ignored. * Kadija Sesay, Literary Activist, author of Irki *Anni Domingo brings great sensitivity to her fictionalised account of the remarkable young life of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, the 'African Princess', who became a god-daughter to Queen Victoria. The internal struggles of Salimatu (Sarah) are movingly explored as she struggles to remain true to her identity as an African after being taken from her homeland and brought to England as a gift from "the King of the Blacks to the Queen of the Whites." A comparable story is told of Salimatu's sister Fatmata (Faith) who is transported to the United States before emancipation. Carefully constructed with a keen eye for historical accuracy, Domingo reveals a compassionate and affectionate Queen Victoria who is devoted to her African god-daughter. This is also an epic story of two sisters who are separated towards the end of the transatlantic slave trade, but never forget each other. * Stephen Bourne, author of War to Windrush and Evelyn Dove *

Now, on the 40th anniversary, Lisa tells her story of the tragic events of that evening and how they have shaped her life. She was just seventeen months old when the Stardust nightclub went up in flames. Her parents, Francis and Maureen Lawlor, were a young couple very much in love. Book SynopsisThis unique volume uses the innovative methodological approach of dystopian fictocriticism to offer a speculative, critical narrative of parents at work. The author begins with a review of fictocriticism and the blurring of lines between genre and gender scholarship. The book follows a temporally fragmented structure of the past, present and future of parenthood in organisations. Integrating theories of masculinities and gendered hierarchies in organisations, the author uses critical discourse analysis of parental experiences to discuss the reproduction of patriarchal discourse. The dystopian fictocriticism narrative is grounded in empirical research with parents and highlights the structural and cultural barriers they face. The narrative concludes with the subversive potential of caring communities within organisations as a possible future to work towards. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in Gender Studies, Utopia/Dystopia Studies, and Organization Studies.Table of Contents1.
