Cambridge University Press How Societies Remember Themes in the Social
Book SynopsisIn treating memory as a cultural rather than an individual faculty, this book provides an account of how bodily practices are transmitted in, and as, traditions. Most studies of memory as a cultural faculty focus on written, or inscribed transmissions of memories. Paul Connerton, on the other hand, concentrates on bodily (or incorporated) practices, and so questions the currently dominant idea that literary texts may be taken as a metaphor for social practices generally. The author argues that images of the past and recollected knowledge of the past are conveyed and sustained by ritual performances and that performative memory is bodily. Bodily social memory is an essential aspect of social memory, but it is an aspect which has until now been badly neglected. An innovative study, this work should be of interest to researchers into social, political and anthropological thought as well as to graduate and undergraduate students.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; Introduction; 1. Book SynopsisVictor Fuchs presents a comprehensive, integrated account of recent changes in family, work, health, and education in the United States.Trade ReviewMr. Fuchs writes clearly and with remarkable common sense… One wishes that How We Live could be made compulsory reading for senators, representatives, and the people at the White House. -- Alfred L. Malabre, Jr. * Wall Street Journal *Fuchs genuinely uses economic data and reasoning to illuminate the choices people make and yet remains quite free of the intellectually imperial view that economic analysis alone suffices to explain the choices… How We Live is a veritable handbook for reformers. Those concerned with policies affecting the family and the labor market especially cannot afford to ignore the information Fuchs assembles. -- Dennis Wrong * The New Republic *Chock-full of fascinating facts and educated conjectures…there is much insightful research. And Mr. Fuchs’s compact style makes the book a pleasure to read. -- Peter Passell * New York Times *The book is addressed to a wide audience, and…will be extremely effective in teaching laymen that basic economic principles can go a long way in explaining the changing structure of our lives. -- Walter Y. Oi * Journal of Economic Literature *Can be recommended for scholars, students, policy makers, and even friends or relatives who ask, ‘What do economists do?’ -- Lee Benham * Journal of Political Economy *Victor Fuchs has performed an astonishing job of synthesis and exposition of the vast literature on the progress of Americans through their life cycle. Harvard University Press Democracys Detectives The Economics of
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis is an outstanding book, the product of careful thinking, of remarkable and painstaking gathering of data on investigative reporting—past and present—that no one in academia or in journalism has ever undertaken before. It is a moving, evidence-based affirmation of the value of journalism to democracy. -- Michael Schudson, Columbia UniversityIn riveting detail, Hamilton meticulously examines the storied history of investigative journalism in America, chronicles its current malaise, and makes a convincing case that pouring resources into gumshoe reporting makes economic sense for sclerotic news organizations. Why? Because readers hunger for more of it and are willing to pay to read it. -- Walter V. Robinson, Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist and Editor-at-Large at the Boston GlobeProvides an extraordinarily precise and painstaking examination of the state of investigative journalism in the United States. Using a wide array of statistical measures and a case study of Pat Stith, a Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter for The News and Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, Hamilton demonstrates that investigative reporting (involving original work about important issues that someone wants to keep secret) costing thousands of dollars can produce millions of dollars in benefits to society. And Hamilton issues an urgent warning that this essential public service is underprovided in the market. His book should command the attention of every citizen who is concerned about the implications for our democracy when sunlight, which is the best disinfectant against corruption and incompetence, is obscured and blocked. -- Glenn C. Altschuler * Huffington Post *A highly original look at exactly what the subtitle promises…Has this topic ever been more important than this year? -- Tyler Cowen * Marginal Revolution *Bracing. -- Rick Edmonds * Poynter *By bringing the economist’s eye to the business of investigative journalism, Hamilton sharpens our appreciation of the craft as he explores its history, the motivations publishers have to fund the work, and the cash benefits investigations pay out. -- Jack Shafer * Reason *Hamilton provides what is likely the most comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the economics of investigative journalism yet conducted…Democracy’s Detectives is essential reading for anyone interested in the economics of news, and it is a master class in methodological creativity and ingenuity in conducting social science research. -- Philip M. Napoli * Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly *[A] terrific new book. -- Sam Lebovic * Los Angeles Review of Books *Hamilton’s book presents a thoughtful and detailed case for the indispensability of investigative journalism—and just at the time when we needed it. Now more than ever, reporters can play an essential role as society’s watchdogs, working to expose corruption, greed, and injustice of the years to come. For this reason, Democracy’s Detectives should be taken as both a call to arms and a bracing reminder, for readers and journalists alike, of the importance of the profession. -- Anya Schiffrin * The Nation *

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Conquest The Destruction of American Indios The
Book SynopsisThe arrival of Europeans in the Americas brought with it a demographic catastrophe of vast proportions for the native populations. In this book Livi Bacci argues that the catastrophe was not the inevitable outcome of contact with Europeans but was a function of both the methods of the conquest and the characteristics of the subjugated societies.Trade Review"An impressive argument for a more complex way of understanding the conquest of what is now Latin America than the single-cause explanations that have been dominant for the past several decades. The translation is lucid and easy to follow, and the generous contemporary illustrations of the life of the Indios at the time of conquest further enrich the text."Population Studies "An excellent study ... the book provides fresh insights into one of the most catastrophic episodes of early modern history and the narrative thrust of the work makes it very readable."Historical Association "Well-illustrated, useful and balanced ... an excellent provocative volume which should have wide appeal."European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies "Bacci makes a significant contribution and should be applauded for tackling a difficult academic question. [He] commendably moves the discussion away from singular epidemiological explanations and refocuses debate on the multiple means and various trajectories involced in the conquest of indigenous peoples."American Historical Review "Massimo Livi-Bacci's Conquest is a brilliant, fascinating history of the demographic catastrophe that enveloped the New World after 1492. Thickly illustrated with the artistic visions and voices of native peoples, it is the most even-handed, comprehensive narrative available - now in a lively, fluid English translation. Livi Bacci examines the evidence with the eye of a seasoned detective, solving a series of mysteries - in the West Indies, Mexico, Peru, and the Río de la Plata. Along the way, he finds much previously overlooked evidence, which he ingenuously assembles into a compelling, nuanced interpretation."Robert McCaa, University of Minnesota "Was the decay of the Amerindian population man-made, or was it brought about by the uncontrolled spread of pathogens or some other factor? Massimo Livi Bacci, a world-leading demographer, joins, in the present translation of his well-read book, the centuries-long debate on the extent and the causes of the post-Conquest collapse, adding to the discussion fresh insights based on his expertise in population studies and on a judicious and thorough historical research."Nicolás Sánchez-Albornoz, New York UniversityTable of ContentsPrefaceI In which are described three voyages that changed the face of a continent, the American population at the time of contact, the demographic catastrophe of the Indios, the sorrowful increase of the Africans, and the expansion of the EuropeansII A humble Franciscan, two combative Dominicans, an Italian humanist at the Court of Spain, a remorseful viceroy, a naturalist ‘alcade’, a Europeanized Inca and an Inca fallen on hard times, a conquistador observer... different witnesses and a common analysis of the catastropheIII A tireless traveler disrupts a continent, but a quarter century too late. Book SynopsisTrade Review"As the world is caught up in a whirlwind of multiple crises - social, ecological, political, civilizational - we desperately need to get our hands on and shut down the source. In this book, two of the most acute minds in critical theory point their fingers towards capitalism. Fraser in particular elaborates on her path-breaking 'unifying' theory of capitalism as a system resting on several hidden abodes that it cannot live without and cannot avoid wrecking. This is the sort of sober and passionate thinking we need in a world careening out of control."—Andreas Malm, Lund University "Fraser and Jaeggi supply an eloquent, well-reasoned, and thorough account of the key institution of our time - capitalism. For them, capitalism is not only a mode of production but also an institutional order or form of life. Book SynopsisTrade Review"Methodology of the Oppressed represents a major contribution to theory and the understanding of contemporary consciousness. Sandoval has created a cornucopia of terms, concepts, and modes of analysis. Consolidating the work of a remarkable range of scholars, she takes the next step in proposing a genuine alternative to the blind alleys in which existing theory often finds itself." —Mary Louise Pratt, author of Imperial Eyes"In this brilliantly innovative work, Chela Sandoval demands that intellectuals interested in democratizing power venture into new political, theoretical territories to listen to and participate in conversations heretofore largely inaudible across the borders of subjectivity. Ground-breaking." —American Quarterly"At a time when the unfriendly ghosts of identity politics still haunt the hallways of academia, this book should be considered necessary reading for educators and cultural workers concerned with struggles for social justice in the twenty-first century. Sandoval’s book has originality. Sandoval is succinct in baring the problems of postmodern era while recognizing its enormous contributions as a mode of social thought, and shows us what may lay over the horizon. If this book is an accurate indication of the future of social movements and critical thought, we have reason to be optimistic." —Convergence"Sandoval’s book brilliantly puts into practice the method, theory, and politics that she describes as U.S. Third World feminism and its particular mode of differential consciousness. WW Norton & Co Appropriate
Book SynopsisA timely, nuanced work that dissects the thorny debate around cultural appropriation and the literary imagination.Trade Review"Questions of cultural appropriation often crystallize most acutely in works of literature, from William Styron to Jeanine Cummins. Rekdal, a writing teacher, parses the issue to ask who is “allowed” to write what, and in what contexts." -- New & Noteworthy - The New York Times"Creative writing professor Paisley Rekdal tackles the definition of cultural appropriation and how it fits into our current political climate in her collection of essays, structured as a series of letters to an imagined student. Rekdal picks apart the hotly debated topic of who gets to tell what story as she examines the evolution of cultural appropriation as it pertains to literature. In her scrutinization of authorship, Rekdal points to bigger questions surrounding whiteness, identity and empathy." -- 14 New Books You Should Read in February - Time"[Rekdal] speaks without condescension to young, ethically conscious writers, and with an awareness that anti-racism is necessarily a constant, ever-shifting struggle; those who presume to have all the answers have got the question wrong." -- Bad Form Magazine

Palgrave MacMillan Us How Long This Road Race Religion and the Legacy of C Eric Lincoln Black ReligionWomanist ThoughtSocial Justice
Book SynopsisEric Lincoln's principle concern with the racial factor in American social and religious life expands in these pages to include such correlative factors as gender, the African Diaspora, and social class.Trade Review"How Long This Road is a sturdy testament to the life and work of C. Eric Lincoln. This kind of testament is necessary to capture the prodigious interest and themes that captured Lincoln's creative mind: religion, race, ethics, literature, human rights, the arts, science, social philosophy, the university, business and economics, the Black Church, civil rights, culture, poetry, sociology, classical philosophy, and education. This volume does not engage in hagiography but pedagogy. Much like his work, the contributors not only inform us, they teach us about the nature of human existence, the need to ask questions about the world around us, and the importance of keeping our humanity in the process. These things keep faith with the values of life, dignity, creativity, and responsibility that Lincoln saw as fundamental to every civilized society. This volume honors Lincoln because it touches the soul and the intellect with uncompromising rigor, keen analysis, and great hope." - Emilie M. This collection pays just tribute to one of the deans of African American religious studies and provides teachers and intelligent readers with a wonderful overview of religion in black America.
