  • Cambridge University Press The New Transnational Activism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe New Transnational Activism, first published in 2005, shows how even the most prosaic activities can assume broader political meanings when they provide ordinary people with the experience of crossing transnational space. This means that we cannot be satisfied with defining transnational activists through the ways they think.Trade Review'… Tarrow's book is highly valuable. It provides a taxonomy of forms of transnational activism that is certain to be taken up by other scholars of global social movements. His account of the range and variety of processes that characterise contentious politics at the international level seems very plausible. He also sends out an important warning to those who would see transnational activism merely as a reflex response to globalization.' DemocratiyaTable of ContentsPart 1. • Cambridge University Press Evil and Human Agency Understanding Collective Evildoing Cambridge Cultural Social Studies

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisEvil is a poorly understood phenomenon. In this provocative 2005 book, Professor Vetlesen argues that to do evil is to intentionally inflict pain on another human being, against his or her will, and causing serious and foreseeable harm. Vetlesen investigates why and in what sort of circumstances such a desire arises, and how it is channeled, or exploited, into collective evildoing. He argues that such evildoing, pitting whole groups against each other, springs from a combination of character, situation, and social structure. By combining a philosophical approach inspired by Hannah Arendt, a psychological approach inspired by C. Fred Alford and a sociological approach inspired by Zygmunt Bauman, and bringing these to bear on the Holocaust and ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia, Vetlesen shows how closely perpetrators, victims, and bystanders interact, and how aspects of human agency are recognized, denied, and projected by different agents.Trade Review'This book is an excellent and brave contribution to a complex topic - balanced, well-argued, informative. I recommend it to all philosophers, sociologists, and psychologists who have research interests in understanding large-scale atrocities.' Claudia Card, Philosophy Review'Vetlesen has developed a solid, well-structured and groundbreaking argument that merits a core position in the literature on collective evildoing and genocide.' Journal of Peace Research'Vetlesen brings to light the paradox of moral responsibility in Arendt's analysis of Eichmann's actions. … Evil and Human Agency is both timely and deserving of wide readership, not only by sociologists, philosophers, and psychologists, but also by politicians and political scientists. Vetlesen stresses the moral failure of bystanders who, in wishing to remain neutral and impartial, did nothing to stop atrocities from occurring. … Vetlesen's thoughtful approach in Evil and Human Agency challenges both the Aristotelian and the Kantian view that egoism is at the root of evildoing …Vetlesen's approach to evildoing, then, is useful to show how we might avoid such atrocities in the future.' The Journal of Value InquiryTable of Contents1. The ordinariness of modern evildoers: a critique of Zygmunt Bauman's The Modernity and the Holocaust; 2. Hannah Arendt on conscience and the banality of evil; 3. The psycho-logic of wanting to hurt others; 4. The logic and practice of collective evil: ethnic cleansing in Bosnia; 5. Responses to collective evil; 6. A political postscript: globalization and the discontents of the self.

  • Cambridge University Press Sociology of Law

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a theoretically informed and research-oriented vision of the sociology of law which examines the place and role of law in society. Mathieu Deflem discusses and reviews major accomplishments in the field and reveals the value of the manner in which sociologists study the social structures and processes of law.Trade Review'Mathieu Deflem's book is a most timely overview of the sociology of law. It brings together a vision of the classical tradition before attending to a comprehensive survey of recent contributions to what has become an increasingly diversified field. He lays the basis for a fruitful engagement between these different strands. Participants will be more aware of the interacting visions of the field and will, hopefully, talk to each other again.' Alan Hunt, Chancellor's Professor, Carleton University'A most welcome immodest effort carried out with aplomb and clarity in the best tradition of scholarship! A learned book that takes ideas and students seriously in demonstrating the intertwining of theory and significant empirical topics within a distinctly sociological perspective. Necessary reading for anyone seeking a systematic and comprehensive introduction to the sociology of law.' Gary T. Marx, Massachusetts Institute of Technology'Mathieu Deflem's cross national vision, much less confined by national and language barriers than most work, will greatly inspire the social scientific study of law. His firm roots in general sociology advance insights that are too easily lost when new speciality areas seek refuge in niches neatly separated from their mother disciplines. I highly recommend this book to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and scholars alike.' Joachim J. Savelsberg, Professor of Sociology, University of Minnesota'Until now, all of the diverse and valuable contributions to sociology of law have been scattered across the academic landscape. Mathieu Deflem organizes, synthesizes, and makes sense of them - so they can be used more effectively for the sociological study and understanding of law in society. If I were teaching a graduate seminar on the sociology of law, the first book assigned would be this one.' R. E. D. Schwartz, Senior Research Scholar, Yale Law School'Deflem reviews major accomplishments in the field and reveals the value of multiple ways in which sociologists study the social structures and processes of law, discussing both historical and contemporary issues.' The Times Higher Education Supplement'Sociology of Law: Visions of a Scholarly Tradition is a heavily programmatic book, packed with brief summaries of key figures in the sociology of law wth corresponding biographical sketches. … the book's encyclopaedic breadth is admirable and the author, Mathieu Deflem, an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology of the University of South Carolina, is to be congratulated on not dismissing theorists all-too often ignored. For those keen on following up on the summarised works and some of their accompanying contemporary treatments, Deflem has constructed a website (www.socoflaw.net), which contains an impressive collection of links to online resources. … Teachers in law and sociology faculties alike will find Deflem's book a useful resource.' • Cambridge University Press The Reluctant Economist

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThese revised essays analyze the revolution in the human condition that is sweeping the world. Easterlin asks if free markets are the key to human improvement, as today's policy-makers often assert. His responses employ a rich social science approach, blending economic theory, history, sociology, and psychology.Trade Review'Reluctant? Richard Easterlin brings to his work such a striking combination of curiosity, enthusiasm, ambition, precision, and skepticism that we might better call him the Thoughtful Economist. Here we witness him applying his unique synthesis of demography, social psychology, and economic analysis to a vast but well disciplined array of evidence concerning multiple times, places, and social phenomena.' Charles Tilly, Columbia University'In this important and thought-provoking set of essays, Richard A. Easterlin draws upon history, demography, and related social sciences to supplement economic analysis and to provide a rich explanation of major questions concerning the Industrial, Demographic, and Mortality Revolutions and the links among them. The range of ideas and information presented make this a most significant contribution to understanding economic and demographic developments in the past, present, and future.' Stanley Engerman, University of Rochester'This is a must read book for students of economic and demographic history. Richard Easterlin is one of the founders of the field and continues to be one of its most original thinkers. As he does in this book, he has always challenged accepted ways of thinking by both economists and historians.' Elizabeth Hoffman, President, University of Colorado'Dick Easterlin has been reluctant to conform to economists' disciplinary prejudice against learning from 'subjective' data on people's motives and intentions or from the knowledge patiently built up in disciplines like history and demography. The resulting breadth of curiosity and knowledge has helped him produce an extraordinary body of work. Whether assessing the impact of economic growth on human well-being, the influence of aspiration levels on family size, or the role of preferences in explaining occupational choice, Easterlin's analyses are, over and over again, refreshingly non-dogmatic, richly informed and insightful. Other economists should be so reluctant.' Michael McPherson, Spencer Foundation'In this collection of well-written essays, one of the deepest and most wide-ranging scholars working in historical social science today raises a number of the most important and relevant issues of our time. Easterlin asks all the right questions: why is the Western World so rich and other are not? How did we get this way? What is the relationship between longer lives and higher incomes? His answers are as informed as they are thought-provoking.' Joel Mokyr, Northwestern University'This volume confirms that Easterlin has one of the most probing, original minds in the social sciences today. He ranges widely over economics, demography, psychology, and political science to help the reader understand the nature and causes of the great social transformations of the past several centuries.' Samuel Preston, University of Pennsylvania'It is a magnificent book - a fitting tribute to the career of one of the most imaginative and important economists of his generation. Nobody does a better job showing how the insights provided by economics can be enhanced by reaching out to other social sciences. This book has much to interest not only economists but also sociologists, psychologists, demographers, historians and others. There is certainly nothing 'dismal' in Dick Easterlin's version of economic science!' Morton Owen Schapiro, President, Williams College'Easterlin (University of Southern California) explains that he's a 'reluctant' economist because he's learned from experience that economists often look upon other social sciences with contempt, an attitude that's prevented economists from adopting more useful theories and proposing more relevant policies. Instead he embraces the tradition of his mentor, the polymath Simon Kuznets, to bring economics, psychology, demography and history together. This collection of essays, all but two originally published between 1975 and 2000, includes many gems that are perfect for classroom use because of Easterlin's ability to pose important questions and address them using clear, insightful, yet simple theories in conjunction with easy-to-interpret quantitative measures. Highlights include the classic Why Isn't the Whole World Developed? (which focuses on knowledge and schooling); Easterlin's well-known theories about the causes and consequences of the baby boom; thoughts on the relationship between the industrial and mortality revolutions; and an argument that economic growth's merits have been vastly oversold. Critics will complain that the essays' coherence comes from oversimplification, that they refuse to ferret out marginal effects using standard econometric techniques, and that they overstate economists' unwillingness to listen to what people say.' Choice'This is a very enjoyable and stimulating collection of essays.' Population studiesTable of ContentsList of tables and figures; Preface; Acknowledgements; Part I. Economics: 1.
