Cambridge University Press Conversation Analysis Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics
Book SynopsisWe live our lives in conversation, building families, societies and civilisations. In over seven thousand languages across the world, the basic infrastructure by which we communicate remains the same. This is the first ever book-length linguistic introduction to conversation analysis (CA), the field that has done more than any other to illuminate the mechanics of interaction. Starting by locating CA by reference to a number of cognate disciplines investigating language in use, it provides an overview of the origins and methodology of CA. By using conversational data from a range of languages, it examines the basic apparatus of sequence organisation: turn-taking, preference, identity construction and repair. As the basis for these investigations, the book uses the twin analytic resources of action and sequence to throw new light on the origins and nature of language use.Trade Review'This exciting new book is authoritatively and engagingly written: the coverage of issues in conversation analysis and the organisation of conversation is first class.' Gareth Walker, Sheffield UniversityTable of Contents1. Introduction: why study conversation?; 2. Towards an understanding of action: origins and perspectives; 3. Why that, now?: position and composition in interaction; 4. Interaction in time: the centrality of turntaking; 5. The structure of sequences I: preference organisation; 6. The structure of sequences II: knowledge and authority in the construction of identity; 7. Halting progressivity: the organisation of repair; 8. Conclusion: discovering order.

Cambridge University Press Politeness Some Universals In Language Usage 4 Studies in Interactional Sociolinguistics Series Number 4
This study is about the principles for constructing polite speeches. The core of it first appeared in Questions and Politeness, edited by Esther N. Goody (now out of print). It is here reissued with a fresh introduction that surveys the considerable literature in linguistics, psychology and the social sciences that the original extended essay stimulated, and suggests distinct directions for research. The authors describe and account for some remarkable parallelisms in the linguistic construction of utterances with which people express themselves in different languages and cultures. A motive for these parallels is isolated and a universal model is constructed outlining the abstract principles underlying polite usages. This is based on the detailed study of three unrelated languages and cultures: the Tamil of South India, the Tzeltal spoken by Mayan Indians in Chiapas, Mexico, and the English of the USA and England. This volume will be of special interest to students in linguistic pragma

Cambridge University Press Conducting Interaction Patterns of Behavior in Focused Encounters 7 Studies in Interactional Sociolinguistics Series Number 7
Book SynopsisThis book makes available five classic studies of the organisation of behaviour in face-to-face interaction. It includes Adam Kendon's well-known study of gaze-direction in interaction, his study of greetings, of the interactional functions of facial expression and of the spatial organisation of naturally occurring interaction, as recorded by means of film or videotape. They represent some of the best work undertaken within the 'natural history' tradition of interaction studies, as originally formulated in the work of Bateson, Birdwhistell and Goffman. Chapter 2, written especially for this new book, provides an historical and theoretical discussion of this tradition, and a new final chapter takes up the theme of the organisation of attention in interaction. The introduction provides details of the circumstances of how each paper came to be written. Each of the papers reprinted is accompanied by a short postscript, placing the work in the context of more recent research. Several of theTable of ContentsPreface; 1. Introduction; 2. Cambridge University Press Gesture and the Nature of Language
Book SynopsisThis book proposes a radical alternative to dominant views of the evolution of language, and in particular the origins of syntax. The authors draw on evidence from areas such as primatology, anthropology, and linguistics, to present a groundbreaking account of the notion that language emerged through visible bodily action.Trade Review'The authors display a broad and deep scholarship, often provocative and stimulating, but never tendentious, and happily free of the polemic tone that mars much linguistic argument.' Michael Studdert-Kennedy'This book links studies of sign language and gesture with recent ideas about human evolution in a highly interesting way. It presents the important idea of 'semantic phonology' and suggests how syntax may have arisen from the inherent structure of practical actions.' Adam KendonTable of ContentsPreface; 1. The universe of gesture; 2. The nature of gesture; 3. Are signed and spoken languages differently organized?; 4. Is language modular?; 5. Do we have a genetically programmed drive to acquire language?; 6. Language from the body politic; 7. The origin of syntax: gesture as name and relation; 8. Language from the body: an evolutionary perspective; References; Index.
