Springer Creative Economies, Creative Cities: Asian-European Perspectives
Book SynopsisJustin O’Connor and Lily Kong The cultural and creative industries have become increasingly prominent in many policy agendas in recent years. Not only have governments identified the growing consumer potential for cultural/creative industry products in the home market, they have also seen the creative industry agenda as central to the growth of external m- kets. This agenda stresses creativity, innovation, small business growth, and access to global markets – all central to a wider agenda of moving from cheap manufacture towards high value-added products and services. The increasing importance of cultural and creative industries in national and city policy agendas is evident in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Australia, and New Zealand, and in more nascent ways in cities such as Chongqing and Wuhan. Much of the thinking in these cities/ countries has derived from the European and North American policy landscape. Policy debate in Europe and North America has been marked by ambiguities and tensions around the connections between cultural and economic policy which the creative industry agenda posits. These become more marked because the key dr- ers of the creative economy are the larger metropolitan areas, so that cultural and economic policy also then intersect with urban planning, policy and governance.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“Creative Economies, Creative Cities, an edited collection of articles by academics from Europe, the Far East and Australia, puts Florida’s thesis in global and historical context. The book mines a rich vein of debate that began long before 2002 about the effectiveness of the Creative Economy idea. … The book is a kind of echo chamber for academics and policy-makers … .” (Matthew J. Kiefer, ArchitectureBoston, September, 2009)“One of the most valuable aspects of Creative Economies, Creative Cities is that it identifies questions from recent years about the cultural and creative industries, a sophisticated set of policy agendas regarding the development of creative economics and creative cities. … This collection should be read by policymakers interested in design and implementation of culture-led regeneration projects.” (Chang Bin Lee, International Journal of Cultural Policy, Vol. 17 (3), June, 2011)“The book has a strong interdisciplinary approach–effectively reflecting the variety of topics and methods that characterise research in this area. … the book proves a solid contribution and some of the chapters included will become highly cited within the field. … it is the first attempt to adopt an inclusive view on the creative economy and give us a better understating of the creative economies discourses and creative city policies taking place in Asia. For this ground-breaking reason the book has to be praised.” (Roberta Comunian, Journal of Cultural Economics, Vol. 34, February, 2010)Table of ContentsChapter 1:Introduction: Justin O’Connor and Lily Kong.- Creative Economy Policies.- Chapter 2: Creative cities and the creative/cultural economy: a European perspective: Andy Pratt.- Chapter 3: Notions of the creative industry in Asia: the interaction of past and present industrial forms: Ted Tschang.- Creative Clusters.- Chapter 4:Spaces of culture and economy: mapping the cultural creative cluster landscape: Hans Mommaas: Chapter 5: Creative clusters: arts and cultural activities in Singapore: Lily Kong: Chapter 6: The capital complex: Beijing’s new creative clusters: Michael Keane: A Creative Class?: Chapter 7: The European creative class and regional development: How relevant is Florida’s theory for Europe?: Høgni Kalsø Hansen, Bjorn Asheim and Jan Vang Lauridsen: Chapter 8: Getting out of place: the mobile creative class takes on the local: Kate Oakley.- Chapter 9: Asian cities and limits to creative capital theory: Patrick Mok.- The Making of Creative Cities.- Chapter 10: The creative industries, governance and economic development: Calvin Taylor: Chapter 11: Shanghai’s emergence into the global creative economy: Li Wu Wei and Hua Jian.- Chapter 12: Shanghai Moderne: creative economy in a creative city?: Justin O’Connor: The Politics of the Creative City: Chapter 13: Urbanity as a political project: urban interventions and the European City: Eric Corijn: Chapter 14: Alternative politics in urban innovation: Panu Lehtovouri and Klaske Havik: References.- Index

Springer Disaster Bioethics: Normative Issues When Nothing
Book SynopsisThis book provides an early exploration of the new field of disaster bioethics:examining the ethical issues raised by disasters. Healthcare ethics issues are addressed in the first part of this book. Large-scale casualties lead to decisions about who to treat and who to leave behind, cultural challenges, and communication ethics. The second part focuses on disaster research ethics. With the growing awareness of the need for evidence to guide disaster preparedness and response, more research is being conducted in disasters. Any research involving humans raises ethical questions and requires appropriate regulation and oversight. The authors explore how disaster research can take account of survivors? vulnerability, informed consent, the sudden onset of disasters, and other ethical issues. Both parts examine ethical challenges where seeking to do good, harm can be done. Faced with overwhelming needs and scarce resources, no good solution may be apparent. But choosing the less wrong option can have a high price. In addition, what might seem right at home may not be seen to be right elsewhere. This book provides in-depth and practical reflection on these and other challenging ethical questions arising during disasters.Scholars and practitioners who gathered at the Brocher Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland in 2011 offer their reflections to promote further dialogue so that those devastated by disasters are respected by being treated in the most ethically sound ways possible. Trade Review“This edited volume brings together an interdisciplinary array of scholars from around the world to discuss disaster bioethics. … book offers an insightful examination of some neglected topics within the larger study of disasters that warrant inquiry. … Disaster Bioethics is a much needed contribution to a field that struggles with how to carry out research in extreme situations. It should be read, at the very least, by any scholar or practitioner who wishes to conduct fieldwork in disaster research.” (Nathalie Baker, Natural Hazards Observer, Vol. 39 (6), July, 2015)“The book is comprised of 13 chapters … contributed by individual authors and divided into two sections. … It will serve to shape and focus future research and debate. … This is a volume that will be of value to those interested in exploring the acceptable ethical bounds of conduct during times of disaster. Such individuals should include not only ethicists but also public health professionals, humanitarian aid workers, and academics who might conduct research in a disaster setting.” (James D. Hearn, Bioethical Inquiry, Vol. 12, 2015)Table of ContentsChapter 1 Disaster Bioethics: An Introduction.- Chapter 2 Macro-triage in Disaster Planning.- Chapter 3 Ethics and Emergency Disaster Response. Amsterdam University Press German Post-Socialist Memory Culture: Epistemic
Book SynopsisAfter German unification, former officers of the GDR state security service united with GDR professors and cultural managers to establish the East German Committee of Associations (OKV). On the basis of encompassing oral history into this complex web of interest organizations and memory clubs, Bouma argues that these activists are driven by an epistemic nostalgia: a longing for the time when their political understanding of the world was seemingly unchallenged. Far from constituting a ‘second life of the Stasi’, the main goal of OKV associations has been to validate the personal biographies of their activists, against the now prevalent view that the GDR was a ‘state of injustice’. While the OKV quickly adapted to the new legal procedures in post-socialist Germany, their staunch defence of the GDR heritage complicates their relation to SED successor party Die Linke and other radical left parties and associations, even when they share practical goals.Table of ContentsList of Figures Acknowledgements List of Abbreviations Introduction Part I: Memory and Nostalgia Chapter 1: The Emotional Factor: Memory, Nostalgia and Politics Chapter 2: OKV Biographies: Shared Memories and Arguments Part II: The Ostdeutsches Kuratorium von Verbänden Chapter 3: The Ostdeutsches Kuratorium von Verbänden: Origins, Structures, Strategies Chapter 4:A Complimentary and Overlapping Web: the OKV as a Social and Political Milieu Part III: The Maintenance of Communal Continuity in Activism and Outreach Chapter 5: Legal Activism: ISOR as OKV's Major Lobby Organization Chapter 6: Left Without Its Party: OKV Attempts at Linkage IV. Lugemik The Voice that Remains
Book Synopsis'The Voice that Remains' is a kind of retrospective; a looking back at material, digital and archival traces left behind within the physical and situated space of PUBLICS, and in the bodies, voices and memories of those who have worked with us in the past years. Each photo, mark and word collected in these pages reflects a collective happening and the labour undertaken to bring a work of art or a piece of research into PUBLICS to be shared with others. The Voice that Remains is a snapshot of PUBLICS' present, where we, who have only recently come to be part of its making, have gathered some of the traces of its programme, keepsakes and leftovers of the last half decade or so. What's left behind as reminders, remainders or rememberings of what once was, is what we have had to work with-to learn how to be PUBLICS, to decide on how to move next, to insert ourselves into the shapeshifting of a small cultural organisation. The publication includes artworks, traces and leftovers by Marja A

Academic Studies Press Collected Studies: The Jews of Provence
Book SynopsisIn Collected Studies (Volume 1): The Jews of Provence, Joseph Shatzmiller, the foremost expert on Provençal Judaism, offers a comprehensive overview of the medieval history of the Jews in Provence. Through an analysis of community regulations, tax distribution, rabbinic leadership, and everyday life, Shatzmiller provides a rich and powerful mosaic of Jewish society in Provence. This masterful work sheds light on the diverse experiences of Jews in the region, from their interactions with Christian neighbors to their internal conflicts and struggles. With its insightful analysis and meticulous research, The Jews of Provence is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of Jewish communities in medieval Europe.“The collection of studies that these four volumes offer is the result of more than sixty years of commitment to scholarship. Like many colleagues, I relied in the beginning on printed material in books that dealt with law, religion, and secular literature. Then, as a disciple of George Duby, I discovered the world of archives and hand-written Latin manuscripts. The present collection relies, to a great extent, on previously unknown information discovered during years of search in the archives of Southern France, mostly on those of the county of Provence. They are situated in the cities of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence as well as the town of Digne. The legal registers of the High Middle Ages (1250-1350) as well as those produced by the counties’ administration introduce us to the ordinary people of the region, to their daily life and to their preoccupations; their names are spelled out, the dates are recorded and the localities in which they were active are designated. At times these documents encourage us to endorse information found in contemporary literary sources and to overcome our hesitation and excessive caution concerning their value as historical evidence.”— Joseph ShatzmillerTrade Review“Joseph Shatzmiller, the foremost expert on Provençal Judaism, has throughout the course of his career provided a rich and powerful mosaic of Jewish society in Provence.
