Book SynopsisThe telegraph, telephone, and television, not to mention the Internet and mobile telephony, are all forms of communication that move information faster than the speed at which objects move. Both labor and capital and armies and commodities once moved at the same speed as the information organizing them.Trade Review"An accessible, provocative vision of class politics for a world where the speed of information seems more important than solidity of material objects." Media International Australia "From Sydney to New York, the real to the virtual, the theoretical to the practical and back again, McKenzie Wark charts the vectors of a new space that is neither here nor there and yet is transforming society and the economy in unprecedented ways. By exposing what is hiding in plain sight, Telesthesia challenges us to fashion a new politics of creative disruption. This book is provocative, insightful and timely." Mark C. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Moral Blindness
Book SynopsisEvil is not confined to war or to circumstances in which people are acting under extreme duress. Today it more frequently reveals itself in the everyday insensitivity to the suffering of others, in the inability or refusal to understand them and in the casual turning away of one's ethical gaze. Evil and moral blindness lurk in what we take as normality and in the triviality and banality of everyday life, and not just in the abnormal and exceptional cases. The distinctive kind of moral blindness that characterizes our societies is brilliantly analysed by Zygmunt Bauman and Leonidas Donskis through the concept of adiaphora: the placing of certain acts or categories of human beings outside of the universe of moral obligations and evaluations. Adiaphora implies an attitude of indifference to what is happening in the world a moral numbness. In a life where rhythms are dictated by ratings wars and box-office returns, where people are preoccupied with the latest gadgets and forms oTrade Review“In order to overcome moral blindness, we have to break the vicious circle of consumerism: politics has to address, again, real problems, universities have to provide us with ‘intellectual slow food’, but most of all we have to regain our dialogic nature – the ability to tell stories and listen to them. Moral Blindness is definitely a good lesson of that.” European Journal of Cultural and Political SociologyTable of ContentsIntroduction: Towards a Theory of Human Secrecy and Unfathomability, or Exposing Elusive Forms of Evil 1 1. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Are We All Postracial Yet
Book SynopsisWe hear much talk about the advent of a postracial age. The election of Barack Obama as President of the U.S. was held by many to be proof that we have once and for all moved beyond race. The Swedish government has even gone so far as to erase all references to race from its legislative documents.Trade Review"It would be tempting to assume that there is a yes or no answer to this work’s titular question, however, it soon shows its complexity as the mind ponders over and over it: are we really postracial? What does ‘postraciality’ evoke? Is this the end to racism? We demand answers and David Theo Goldberg – as part of Polity’s Debating Race series – leaves no stone unturned in this distinctive essay on race."Inky Needles"This pointed, thoughtful and readable book is a bold intervention in the politics of undoing racial hierarchy. For too long, anti-racism has been inhibited by the difficulties involved in moving beyond critique. David Goldberg has risen to the cosmopolitan challenge involved in breaking that logjam. With characteristic rigor and wit, he shows how antiracist politics can be reconfigured in combative, practical and affirmative forms."Paul Gilroy, King’s College London "This Book reveals the neo-raciality masked by the claims of the post-racial. The underlying structures of economic, political, and social inequalities have seen the afterlife of racism in police uniforms walk the streets of America openly amidst the cries of ‘I can’t breathe’ from its victims. A must read." wa Thiong’o Ng g , University of California, Irvine "David Theo Goldberg’s trenchant meditation on the challenges to anti-racist remediation reveals a structured cultural silence about deep social shape-shifting forms of inequality. The very term ‘post-racial’ places racism's harms beyond critical analysis, rendered unreachable because located in the past, indecipherable because erased from language; and ungovernable because assigned to private rather than collective address. This excellent study explores the limits of ‘post-racialism’ in an epoch of denial, unsparingly dissecting the common attributes of interesting forms of prejudice."Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School "Goldberg's Are We All Postracial Yet? provocatively and powerfully interrogates the idea of the Postracial as something more than an aspiration, but in fact the basis for a new phase of racial arrangements, shaped by shifts in the political economy, domestic and international law, and geopolitics. The work is theoretically rich and probing with both global and local implications. It deepens race critical theory, and furthers our understanding of the ongoing significance of race."Imani Perry Hughes Rogers Professor of African American Studies, Princeton University and author of More Beautiful and More Terrible: The Embrace and Transcendence of Racial Inequality in the U.S. (2011)"Are we all postracial yet? David Theo Goldberg in answering this question with a resounding “yes” explores the postracial as a logic and condition that enables racism to persist and proliferate. This book offers a sharp, wise and unflinching critique of the racism of the postracial. It is also a deeply optimistic book: there is no better way of demanding an alternative than by demonstrating its necessity."Sara Ahmed, Goldsmiths"The work of David Theo Goldberg has been an important point of reference in discussions about theories of race and racialization. […] Utilizing an elegant and engaging writing style Goldberg seeks to dissect and explore the various meanings attached to the notion of the 'postracial'." Ethnic and Racial Studies, Review Symposium "Goldberg's advance is to explore how the illusion [of postraciality] has become increasingly weaponized; that far from signalling the end of race or even broad acceptance of the illusion of the end of race, it represents an emergent 'neo-raciality, racism's extension if not resurrection'." Gavan Titley, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Review Symposium"Goldberg articulates here a daring and ultimately affirmative fashioning of an anti-racist, 'non-racial' humanism – a vision of humanism that does not slip into the neo-imperial and anti-difference tropes humanism is otherwise prone to."Sivamohan Valluvan, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Review SymposiumTable of ContentsPreface 1 The pasts of the postracial 2 Postracial conditons 3 Postracial logics 4 Postracial subjects 5 Are we all postracial yet?

AltaMira Press Old Poisons New Problems
Book SynopsisA guide to identifying, testing for, and dealing with contaminated cultural materials archived in museum collections. It features worksheets for performing basic tests, charts of scientific and historical information on known pesticides, data resources, and illustrations. It is suitable for the museum community and tribal groups.Trade ReviewOld Poisons, New Problems, combines Native Peoples' perspectives on their pesticide contaminated collections with handbook style chapters covering everything from the 'how-to' of testing for pesticides, to specific information on pesticides likely to be found on museum collections, to working with teams of allied professionals in addressing the repatriation of contaminated cultural materials. This book is a must for anyone who deals with cultural materials that might have been treated with pesticides. -- Marian A. Kaminitz, Ethnographic Working Group Coordinator for International Council on Museums?Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC)This book is well written and very informative. As NAGPRA Committee Chairman for the four Nebraska Tribes, I know that this is what the Indian Tribes have been waiting for the past 14 years. Contamination of our Cultural Artifacts is one of the biggest problems we have faced since the passage of the NAGPRA Act. The Native American Tribes need to know what they are facing when it comes to the Repatriation of Artifacts and Human Remains in the various museums and collections agencies across the United States and the world. Nancy Odegaard and Alyce Sadongei's book will be our guide. -- David Lee Smith, NAGPRA Committee Chairman for the four Nebraska Tribes (Winnebago, Omaha, Santee, and Ponca) and Cultural Preservation DirectorWith increasing indigenous involvement in the collection, handling, and repatriations of artifacts formerly held in museum archives, it's about time for Old Poisons, New Problems, which discusses the ins and outs of cultural materials contaminated by pesticides. * Museum News *It brings all of the pertinent information on contaminated cultural materials in museums to one place. This is also the first publication that I know of that provides multiple spot tests specifically developed for testing pesticide residues on museum artifacts. The way these tests were adapted for this use is ingenious! It truly is a resource for all museums that house cultural materials. I look forward to its publication so that I can use it. -- Scott Carrlee, Conservator, Alaska State MuseumsArising from a project that began in 1998 by the Arizona State Museum Southwest Native Nations Advisory Board and various departments of the University of Arizona, Old Poisons, New Problems is the handbook developed for an important workshop held in March 2000. It contains a wealth of information on pesticides and the health issues related to their use on artifacts returned to Native communities, and sets the stage for addressing these issues amongst Native communities, museum staff, analytical and medical researchers, and public health professionals. An excellent beginning to addressing a problem that affects all people working in the cultural heritage field. -- Ruth Norton, Chief Conservator, The Field MuseumOld Poisons, New Problems: A Museum Resource for Managing Contaminated Cultural Materials is a much needed introductory information resource for people working with Native American materials. It has a practical focus on the problems that have grown out of pesticide contamination that has occurred to items while being housed in museums. Giving practical advice from both the museum and the Native perspective, it should help people dealing with the issues. It is a starting point for understanding the complex and often scary problem, and the paths to finding ways to manage the difficulties. The book is full of in-depth collections of information that are currently dispersed in many different places including: charts of pesticides that were used in museums, synonyms of names, information on health hazards, spot tests for some heavy metal pesticides and much more. This much-needed resource fills an information gap. It will be of use to museum personnel, native communities, industrial hygienists, analytical scientists, medical personal and all others who are struggling to find ways to deal with the legacy of past pesticide practices in museums. -- Jessica Johnson, Fellow of the American Institute for ConservationDedicated to a broad definition of the problems associated with the presence of contaminants on cultural property, it provides useful information for professionals with a wide variety of perspectives. . .the overall result is a book, which should spark discussion, disseminate a variety of points of view, and provide resources for further research on the topic. * Collections *The authors of Old Poisons, New Problems have written a book that sensitizes the reader to the issues faced by tribal members, and provides a massive amount of important information that will be invaluable for many years to come as the decontamination process is defined and proceeds. * Museum Anthropology *The authors demonstrate that effective dialogue requires representation from a broad group that includes conservators, First Nations, industrial hygienists, and chemists. The book also strives to equip the participants with the common language needed to enter into effective discussions around the use and repatriation of contaminated belongings... Numerous other resources included will ensure that Old Poisons, New Problems gathers little dust in museum labs. Overviews of analytical test methods, spot-testing instructions, history of the legislated use of pesticides in the United States and easy to read charts outlining characteristics, classification, and trade names of pesticides are but a few of the items which make this volume a solid resource. * Journal Of The Canadian Association For Conservation *Table of Contents1 Foreword 2 Preface 3 Acknowledgments 4 Introduction 5 NAGPRA Legislation Overview 6 Testimony to the NAGPRA Review Committee 7 Chapter 1. Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Handbook of Methods in Cultural Anthropology
Book SynopsisThe Handbook of Methods in Cultural Anthropology, now in its second edition, maintains a strong benchmark for understanding the scope of contemporary anthropological field methods. Avoiding divisive debates over science and humanism, the contributors draw upon both traditions to explore fieldwork in practice. The second edition also reflects major developments of the past decade, including: the rising prominence of mixed methods, the emergence of new technologies, and evolving views on ethnographic writing.Spanning the chain of research, from designing a project through methods of data collection and interpretive analysis, the Handbook features new chapters on ethnography of online communities, social survey research, and network and geospatial analysis. Considered discussion of ethics, epistemology, and the presentation of research results to diverse audiences round out the volume. The result is an essential guide for all scholars, professionals, and advanced students who employ fieldwTrade ReviewThis significantly expanded second edition is bound to become the quintessential reference book for every anthropologist engaged in active field research. With sixteen updated chapters and eight entirely new ones—on topics ranging from online ethnography to GIS to public anthropology—this volume is a treasure trove of sound methodological strategies imparted by leading figures in the discipline. A must-read for everyone from graduate students headed for the field to established academics and applied anthropologists. -- Marcia Inhorn, Yale UniversityA timely update that provides rich and in-depth overviews on contemporary methods in cultural anthropology. Each chapter is written by experts in the particular methodology, making this second edition an excellent companion to Bernard’s Research Methods in Anthropology. -- Douglas W. Hume, Northern Kentucky University; Treasurer, Society for Anthropological SciencesI challenge any anthropologist to read this expanded second edition and not contemplate adding one of the described methods to his or her own toolbox. The chapters invite us to reflect upon the nuances of our methodological choices and encourage us to move beyond a polarizing divide between quantitative and qualitative research—to embrace the no-longer-stranger notion that both may contribute to the anthropologists' craft. This new edition is easily classified as essential reading. -- M. Cameron Hay, Miami University; author, Remembering to Live: Illness at the Intersection of Anxiety and Knowledge in Rural IndonesiaEditors Bernard and Gravlee focus on the core aspect: fieldwork. The second edition of this handbook is organized into four parts: 'Perspectives,' 'Acquiring Information,' 'Interpreting Information,' and 'Applying and Presenting Information. The 23 chapters were each separately authored; some are by well-known anthropologists and others by those not so well-known. All have lengthy reference lists. . . .Nevertheless, the excellent essays certainly will be of use to experts wanting to expand their repertoire and to novices. Contributors cover topics ranging from epistemology to survey methods and from the classic participant observation to contemporary fieldwork in online environments. This highly readable collection will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students alike and be a useful addition to college and university libraries collecting in the social sciences. University Press of America Crazy Culture
Book SynopsisCrazy Culture is a series of broadsides against many widely held misconceptions in both academe and the general public, who is often seen clustering under the politically correct banner of multiculturalism. Heinegg confronts the notion that all cultureespecially that of non-westerners and oppressed minoritiesis somehow good in itself and that outsiders have no right to criticize or condemn any cultures except their own. He also challenges the view that the term culture applies primarily to a handful of masterpieces, as opposed to the great bulk of artistic products and folkways, and that the proper attitude toward the vast spectrum of culture, past and present, is sentimental admiration. Surveying both the history and ideology of cultural realms such as our treatment of animals, religion, sexual norms, politics, economics, urban life, the arts, and athletics, Heinegg deftly identifies and explains ubiquitous traces of cultural sins by humanity.Table of ContentsPrelude Introduction I. Taylor & Francis Inc Society and Knowledge
Book SynopsisThe sociology of knowledge is generally seen as part of the sociology of cultural products. Along with the sociology of science, it explores the social character of science and in particular the social production of scientific knowledge. Knowledge in all its varieties is of crucial importance in social, political, and economic relations in modern society. Yet new realities, the editors argue in their introduction to this second edition, require a new perspective. In the past half century, the social role of knowledge has changed profoundly. The natural attitude toward scientific knowledge in science that assigned a special status to science's knowledge claims has lost its dominance, and the view that all knowledge is socially constructed has gained general acceptance. Science increasingly influences the political agenda in modern societies. Consequently, a new political field has emerged: knowledge politics. These fourteen essays by social scientists, philosophers, and hTable of ContentsI: Fundamental Issues; 1: The Sociology of Knowledge; 2: Durkheim and Mauss Revisited: Classification and the Sociology of Knowledge; 3: Knowledge and Utility: Implications for the Sociology of Knowledge; II: Theoretical Perspectives; 4: Toward a Sociology of Cognition; 5: The Conventional Component in Knowledge and Cognition; 6: The Fabrication of Facts: Toward a Microsociology of Scientific Knowledge; III: Knowledge and Power; 7: Knowledge and Power: An Interview by Peter Ludes; 8: Knowledge as Product and Property 1; 9: Mixing Metaphors: Politics or Economics of Knowledge?; 10: Knowledge Societies; IV: Empirical Studies; 11: Polarity and Knowledge; 12: Kausalität, Anschaulichkeit , and Individualität , or How Cultural Values Prescribed the Character and the Lessons Ascribed to Quantum Mechanics *; 13: Midwifery as Science: An Essay on the Relation between Scientific and Everyday Knowledge; 14: The Discursive Production of Uncertainty: The OJ Simpson “Dream Team” and the Sociology of Knowledge Machine *

Book SynopsisIn this book, top specialists address theoretical, methodological, and empirical multilevel models as they relate to the analysis of individual and cultural data. Divided into four parts, the book opens with the basic conceptual and theoretical issues in multilevel research, including the fallacies of such research. Part II describes the methodological aspects of multilevel research, including data-analytic and structural equation modeling techniques. Applications and models from various research areas including control, values, organizational behavior, social beliefs, well-being, personality, response styles, school performance, family, and acculturation, are explored in Part III. This section also deals with validity issues in aggregation models. The book concludes with an overview of the kinds of questions addressed in multilevel models and highlights the theoretical and methodological issues yet to be explored. Scarecrow Press What is Documentation
Book SynopsisBorn in Paris in 1894, Suzanne Briet was active nationally and internationally in the development of what was then known as Documentation but would now be called Information Management or Information Science. In 1931, she participated in founding the Union Française des Organismes de Documentation (UFOD), the French analogue of the American Documentation Institute now called the American Society for Information Science and Technology. She was a leader in developing professional education for this new specialty and designed a plan for what would have been the first school of Documentation / Information Science worldwide, had it been established. In 1951, when a school of information science was finally established, Briet was the founding Director of Studies. She became Vice President of the International Federation for Documentation (FID) and acquired the nickname Madame Documentation. What is Documentation? relates this fascinating story and includes the first English translation of Briet''s remarkable manifesto on the nature of documentation, Qu''est-ce que la documentation? (Paris: EDIT, 1951). A pamphlet of 48 pages, Part I sought to push the boundaries of the field beyond texts to include any material form of evidence (Is a living animal a document? she asked). Part II argued that a new and distinct profession was emerging. Part III urged the societal need for new and active documentary services. This tract remains significant due to its continuing relevance towards understanding the nature, scope, and societal impacts of documents and documentation. Briet''s modernist perspective, combined with semiotics, deserves attention now because it offers a sturdy and insightful alternative to the scientific, positivist view that has so dominated information science and which is increasingly questioned.Trade Review...important reading.... * Journal Of Documentation, Vol. 63, No. 5 (2007) *[a] full and excellent translation... * Information & Culture *A worthwhile read for librarians, information scientists, and students. * College & Research Libraries, Vol. 68, No. 2 (March 2007) *Table of ContentsPart 1 Preface Part 2 Acknowledgments Part 3 A Brief Biography of Suzanne Renée Briet Part 4 Suzanne Briet's What is Documentation? Trade Review“Unhappy Valley: Conflict in Kenya and in Africa is a must-read for all concerned with issues of colonization, dependency, and state building, as well as the nature and achievements of African resistance.”-- Kinuthia Macharia, Modern African Studies“There are some truly excellent ideas presented in Unhappy Valley, especially those relating to the definition of ethnicity and the process that creates the colonial state. … this work makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Kenyan history. Penguin Publishing Group Future of the Body Explorations into the Further Evolution of Human Nature
Book SynopsisIn the oral and written histories of every culture, there are countless records of men and women who have displayed extraordinary physical, mental, and spiritual capacities. In modern times, those records have been supplemented by scientific studies of exceptional functioning. Are the limits of human growth fixed? Are extraordinary abilities latent within everyone? Is there evidence that humanity has unrealized capacities for self-transcendence? Are there specific practices through which ordinary people can develop these abilities?Michael Murphy has studied these questions for over thirty years. In The Future of the Body, he presents evidence for metanormal perception, cognition, movement, vitality, and spiritual development from more than 3,000 sources. Surveying ancient and modern records in medical science, sports, anthropology, the arts, psychical research, comparative religious studies, and dozens of other disciplines
