Taylor & Francis Propaganda and the Genocide in Indonesia
In Indonesia, the events of 1st October 1965 were followed by a campaign to annihilate the Communist Party and its alleged sympathisers. It resulted in the murder of an estimate of one million people a genocide that counts as one of the largest mass murders after WWII and the incarceration of another million, many of them for a decade or more without any legal process. This drive was justified and enabled by a propaganda campaign in which communists were painted as atheist, hypersexual, amoral and intent to destroy the nation. To date, the effects of this campaign are still felt, and the victims are denied the right of association and freedom of speech. This book presents the history of the genocide and propaganda campaign and the process towards the International People's Tribunal on 1965 crimes against humanity in Indonesia (IPT 1965), which was held in November 2015 in The Hague, The Netherlands. The authors, an Indonesian Human Rights lawyer and a Dutch academ

The book discusses the project and contains chapters either specially commissioned or written by leading researchers and activists in the field.Informed by a range of theoretical perspectives, empirical research studies, critical observations as well as lived experiences, this book explores areas of LGBT ageing that have been under-studied. These include: bisexual ageing; trans ageing and older trans peopleâs mental health; ethnicity, culture and religion in the lives of older LGBT people and gaps in knowledge about older LGBT people from minority ethnic communities; intergenerational networks; residential and end-of-life care; and the effeTable of ContentsList of figures; List of tables; Acknowledgments; List of contributors; Chapter 1: Older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans People: Minding the Knowledge Gaps (Andrew King, Kathryn Almack and Yui-Tung Suen); Chapter 2: Bisexual ageing: What do we know and why should we care? Taylor & Francis Cultural Policy in South Korea
Book SynopsisThis is the first English-language book on cultural policy in Korea, which critically historicises and analyses the contentious and dynamic development of the policy. It highlights that the evolution of cultural policy has been bound up with the complicated political, economic and social trajectory of Korea to a surprising degree. Investigating the content and context of the policy from the period of Japanese colonial rule (1910â1945) until the military authoritarian regime (1961â1988), the book discusses how culture, often co-opted by the government, was mobilised to disseminate state agendas and define national identity. It then moves on to investigate the distinct characteristics of Koreaâs contemporary cultural policy since the 1990s, particularly its energetic pursuit of democracy, a market economy of culture and outward cultural globalisation (the Korean Wave). This book helps readers to understand the continuous presence of the âstrong stateâ in Korean cultural policy and itsTrade ReviewThis book is a captivating and greatly needed addition to cultural policy studies. As the first English-language book on Korean cultural policy, it aptly historicizes the evolution of Korean cultural policy since the early 20th century and clearly articulates diverse perspectives embedded in the national cultural policy. By rendering the tensions and negotiations among various theoretical and practical frameworks, in particular between state-developmentalists and neoliberal globalists, surrounding major cultural policy issues, it clarifies the reasons why media scholars, cultural producers, and policy makers refocus on cultural policy in the ever-growing Korean cultural industries and the Korean Wave contexts. Without a doubt, this is timely and an indispensable chaperon for researchers and students who are interested in cultural policy studies, globalization studies, media studies, and Korean studies. - Dal Yong Jin, Simon Fraser University For those of us less familiar with Korean history, Hye-Kyung Lee gives us a richly contextualised and accessible account of cultural policies since the era of Japanese colonial rule, explaining their evolution both in terms of South Korea’s own political dynamics since the 1940s and the nationally diffracted effects of globalization. At the same time, Lee has extensive familiarity with Anglophone discussions of cultural policy, and the book represents an incisive and original intervention in those discussions. In particular, it recasts or ‘provincializes’ prevailing conceptions of state-culture-economy relations, and shows an admirable awareness of the broad range of fronts on which cultural policies have operated. - Jeremy Ahearne, University of WarwickIn this timely book Hye-Kyung Lee examines the history of state patronage in South Korea during the twentieth century, culminating in the current era sometimes described as the Korean Wave. She considers trajectories of culturTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsNotes on the Romanisation of KoreanChapter 1. Introduction: Culture and the StateChapter 2. Taylor & Francis An Ethnography of Global Environmentalism
Book SynopsisBased on nine years of research, this is the first book to offer an in-depth ethnographic study of a transnational environmentalist federation and of activists themselves. The book presents an account of the daily life and the ethical strivings of environmental activist members of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), exploring how a transnational federation is constituted and maintained, and how different people strive to work together in their hope of contributing to the creation of a better future for the globe. In the context of FoEI, a great diversity of environmentalisms from around the world are negotiated, discussed and evolve in relation to the experiences of the different cultures, ecosystems and human situations that the activists bring with them to the federation. Key to the global scope of this project is the analysis of FoEI experiments in models for intercultural and inclusive decision-making. The provisional results of FoEI's ongoing experiments in this area offTrade Review"In this meticulously written book, crafted from nine years of ethnographic work, Caroline Gatt provides a highly original account of an activist NGO that not only tells us about what its members and supporters believe and do, but also how their actions, decisions and priorities are embedded in wider practices, processes and imaginaries. This volume is an important and timely addition to the small but growing field of anthropological studies of activism and NGOs worlds, and should be read by activists and researchers alike."- David Lewis, London School of Economics & Political ScienceTable of Contents1.
