Rutgers University Press Between Self and Community: Children’s Personhood
Book SynopsisBetween Self and Community investigates the early childhood socialization process in a rapidly changing, globalizing South Korea. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in a South Korean preschool, it shows how both children and teachers interactively navigate, construct, and reconstruct their own multifaceted and sometimes conflicting models of what makes “a good child” amid Korea’s shifting educational and social contexts. Junehui Ahn details the conflicting and competing ways in which the ideologies of new personhood are enacted in actual everyday socialization contexts and reveals the confusions, dilemmas, and ruptures that occur when globally dominant ideals of childhood development are superimposed onto local experiences. Between Self and Community pays special attention to the way children, as active agents of socialization, create, construe, and sustain their own meanings of their personhood, thereby highlighting the dynamism children and their culturally rich peer world create in South Korea’s shifting socialization terrain. Trade Review "Junehui Ahn once again establishes herself as one of the pre-eminent chroniclers of children’s lives. Her delicate and lucid ethnography closely documents how Korean preschoolers actively contribute to their own socialization. As striking is her compelling demonstration of how these children deftly mediate between local values and a new, globalized vision of personhood." — Lawrence A. Hirschfeld, author of Race in the Making: Cognition, Culture, and the Child's Construction of Human Kinds "What does it mean to be a 'good child' today in a globally influenced society? Ahn tackles this intriguing question through the eyes and mouths of young children and teachers in a South Korean preschool. She reveals how children navigate peer relationships, influence their teachers' pedagogical approaches, and redefine expectations. Ahn encourages us to reflect on and recalibrate our own expectations of children and childhood in an ever-changing, global environment." — Barbra A. Rutgers University Press Reversing the Gaze: What If the Other Were You?
Book SynopsisTired of being scrutinized, criticized, and fetishized for her black skin, Cameroon-born scholar Geneviève Makaping turns the tables on Italy’s white majority, regarding them through the same unsparing gaze to which minorities have traditionally been subjected. As she candidly recounts her experiences—first across Africa and then as a migrant Black woman in Italy—Makaping describes acts of racist aggression that are wearying and degrading to encounter on a daily basis. She also offers her perspective on how various forms of inequality based on race, color, gender, and class feed off each other. Reversing the Gaze invites readers to confront the question of racism through the retelling of everyday occurrences that we might have experienced as victims, perpetrators, or witnesses. Trade Review"A bold statement about language, identity, and belonging. Makaping’s unparalleled dissection of white Italy is fearless, unnerving, and unfailingly accurate. Without doubt the foundational text of Black Italian studies." -- Derek Duncan * co-editor of Transnational Modern Languages: A Handbook *“Combining memoir with the social sciences, Makaping tells us about the challenges of being a black woman in Italy, how double consciousness takes on new meanings, and why the color line remains an unresolved question in twenty-first-century Europe. A pioneering text, a fundamental read.” -- Alessandra Di Maio * author of Wor(l)ds in Progress: A Study of Contemporary Migrant Writings *Table of ContentsForeword: Producing Transnational Black Studies with an Intersectional Approach Caterina Romeo Translators’ Note Giovanna Bellesia Contuzzi and Victoria Offredi Poletto Editor’s Note Simone BrioniReversing the Gaze Introduction: My Nonaligned Feminism Geneviève Makaping 1. Rutgers University Press Ways of Belonging: Undocumented Youth in the
Book SynopsisWays of Belonging examines the experiences of undocumented young people who are excluded from K–12 schools in Canada and are rendered invisible to the education system. Canadian law doesn’t mention the existence of undocumented children, and thus their access to education rests on discretionary practices and is often denied altogether. This book brings the stories of undocumented young people vividly alive, putting them into conversation with the perspectives of the different actors in schools and courts who fail to include these young people. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, Francesca Meloni shows how ambivalence shapes the lives of young people who are caught between the desire to belong and the impossibility of fully belonging. Meloni pays close attention to these young people’s struggles and hopes, showing us what it means to belong and to endure in contexts of social exclusion. Ways of Belonging reveals the opacities and failures of a system that excludes children from education and puts their lives in invisibility mode. By avoiding simplistic accounts of state oppression and victimization, she proposes a multidimensional framework for understanding how people who are 'vanished' may, nevertheless, generate affective strategies that enable layered ways of surviving and even flourishing."— Jacqueline Bhabha, author of Child Migration and Human Rights in a Global Age "Ways of Belonging examines what it means when young people reside in a place while not being of that place and how they carve out spaces of their own in the face of uncertainty and invisibility. Based on an impressive study, this remarkable book shines an important light on the nuances of contemporary migration and the policies that have produced ambiguous belonging. Theoretically insightful, rigorously researched, and compellingly argued, this is a must-read for scholars and policymakers alike." — Roberto G. Gonzales, author of Lives in Limbo: Undocumented and Coming of Age in America "Ways of Belonging provides sophisticated and empathic insights into how young people whose lives are shaped by legal liminality and an ambivalent national reception navigate these vulnerabilities while concurrently exerting agency. MW - Rutgers University Press Home Is Where Your Politics Are
Book Synopsis Home Is Where Your Politics Are is a transnational consideration of queer and trans activism in the US South and South Africa. Through ethnographic exploration of queer and trans activist work in both places, Jessica Scott paints a vibrant picture of what life is like in relation to a narrative that says that queer life is harder, if not impossible, in rural areas and on the African continent. The book asks questions like, what do activists in these places care about and how do stories about where they live get in the way of the life they envision for the queer and trans people for whom they advocate? Answers to these questions provide insight that only these activists have, into the complexity of locally based advocacy strategies in a globalized world.

Rutgers University Press The Truth That Never Hurts 25th anniversary
Book SynopsisBarbara Smith has been doing groundbreaking work since the early 1970s, describing a Black feminism for Black women. Her work in Black women's literary traditions; in examining the sexual politics of the lives of women of color; in representing the lives of Black lesbians and gay men; and in making connections between race, class, sexuality and gender is gathered in The Truth That Never Hurts. This collection contains some of her major essays on Black women's literature, Black lesbian writing, racism in the women's movement, Black-Jewish relations, and homophobia in the Black community. Her forays into these areas ignited dialogue about topics that few other writers were addressing at the time, and which, sadly, remain pertinent to this day. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition, in a beautiful new package, also contains the essays from the original about the 1968 Chicago convention demonstrations; attacks on the NEA; the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas Senate hearings; and police brutality against Rodney King and Abner Louima, which, after twenty-five years, still have the urgency they did when they were first written. Trade Review"Barbara Smith's uncompromising intelligence helped invent the politics of intersection which grounds progressive thinking today. These essays deliver trenchant analysis from one of the most original, astute, and practical thinkers in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender movement." -- Urvashi Vaid * director of The Policy Institute, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force *"At every moment of serious political crisis—and no thinking person can argue that ours is not such a moment—certain writers step forward with words that seem to ring from the very heart of history. Barbara Smith is certainly one of these writers, and her new book, electrifying, thought-provoking, illuminating, eloquent, harsh, and funny, is essential reading. Whether you agree with everything she says is not important; the essays in this book will revivify your heart and mind and reawaken a passion for activism and for justice." * Tony Kushner *"Barbara Smith is visionary, courageous, and insightful. Her work provides a crucial challenge to all of us." -- Dr. Cornel West"In these essays, Smith, an independent scholar and editor, explores several explosive issues, among them sexual politics, racism and women's studies, and homophobia." * Library Journal *"A feminist writer and theorist of some repute, Smith founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press with the late "black lesbian mother warrior feminist poet" Audre Lorde, and was the first woman of color appointed to the Modern Language Association's Commission on the Status of Women in the Profession. Her seminal 1977 essay Toward a Black Feminist Criticism, which puts forth the notion that a "Black women's literary tradition" not only exists, but thrives, fittingly opens this collection of newer and older, still vibrant works, most previously published in often hard-to-find journals or anthologies. Noting that "it is unnerving to imagine" what kind of writing she might have produced had she not come out, Smith registers obstacles to her current work on a wide-ranging history of black lesbians and gays in America, citing a recent two-volume encyclopedia (Darlene Clark Hine's Black Women in America) in which there are only six entries under 'Lesbian.' In the final essay of the collection, 'A Rose,' Smith recalls her friend, the late Lucretia 'Lu' Medina Diggs, and mourns the loss of her and Lorde, stressing that she will not be deterred from her fight for political awareness and compassion. Smith's writing frequently reaches strident polemicist peaks, but, just as frequently, stretches of sublime prose translate her crystalline intellect to the page, exciting both mind and senses." * Publishers Weekly *"A provocative collection of impassioned essays written from a radical, gay, African-American, feminist perspective. Smith, co-founder and publisher of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, has been publishing literary and social criticism for over 20 years. As a literary critic, she chastises the academic establishment for often misinterpreting and largely disregarding the voices of black women--gay black women in particular. In one of her most influential essays, 'Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,' written in 1977, Smith, contending that 'black women writers constitute an identifiable literary tradition,' pleads for a black feminist approach toward examining literature. Only the black feminist critic, she argues, is fully able to comprehend the nuances of work by black women, such as the depth of Sula and Nells relationship in Toni Morrisons novel Sula. Smith is also critical of nonlesbians addressing the black lesbian experience. In The Truth that Never Hurts, published in the late '80s, she argues that positive depictions of black lesbians are sorely lacking and that 'far too many non-lesbian black women who are actively involved in defining the African-American women's literary renaissance . . . completely ignore black lesbian existence or are actively hostile to it.' Smith's equally fervent social and political writings are informed by a Marxist viewpoint. She argues, sometimes unpersuasively, that heterosexism and sexism can wither only when capitalism is destroyed. She's especially concerned about the lack of role models for gay black youth; and she takes to task her gay brothers and sisters who have chosen to stay closeted because they are 'more concerned with their individual security and careers than they are with building community and working for radical political change.' This manifesto is always challenging and often convincing. * Kirkus Reviews *"Smith's book is an excellent example of powerful, introspective writing that challenges readers to reexamine their stance on complex issues concerning race and gender." * Bloomsbury Review *"Smith has provided us with a collection of erudite and profoundly moving writings [which are] smart, incisive, and instructive. There is no stone that Smith has left unturned. From homophobia in the black community to police brutality and including racism in the womenÆs movement, black women and anti-Semitism . . . Barbara Smith has explained the linkages between the multiplicity of oppressions facing blacks in general and black lesbians in particular." * Journal of Lesbian Studies *"The ancestors are surely ecstatic about the diligence, courage, passion, and good humor exhibited in The Truth That Never Hurts. This is a landmark work from a pioneering activist who has always kept the faith." -- Evelyn C. White * editor of The Black Women's Health Book *"Sobering in what it has to tell us, The Truth That Never Hurts forces us to face those truths that disrupt the placid surfaces of our lives. A personal/political odyssey that documents some of the most critical moments in the last three decades of our national life, Smith's book forces us to new levels of awareness. Her piercing eye and uncompromising search for human justice for all make this volume must-reading for everyone who cares about the future." -- Nellie Y. McKay * co-editor of The Norton Anthology of African American Literature *“Want to know how today's body of Black feminist writing and literature came into being? The Truth That Never Hurts tells a good part of the story…. When she tells the stories of the women who are her colleagues–Lucretia Diggs in ‘A Rose’ or of her aunt LaRue, who brought the young Barbara and her twin sister Beverly library books–Smith inscribes in history the chance networks that keep marginalized people, especially Black women writers and lesbians, alive and alert. That's the healing part of the world she brings alive here.” * The Women’s Review of Books *“Although the book is particularly valuable for young people who might not know the history and dynamics of Black women's involvement in second wave feminism, it is a work likely also to be of great interest to those in women's studies, to those interested in Black feminist theory and literary criticism, and to those committed to understanding the interlocking nature of multiple forms of oppression in American culture.” * Radical Teacher *"The Truth That Never Hurts: Writings on Race, Gender, and Freedom provides a universal message about struggle, resistance, and freedom, grounded within a black Lesbian feminist critique of America's culture and politics. The cogently written essays represent a cross-section of Smith's work over the past twenty years and the first book dedicated exclusively to her own writing. Focusing on race, feminism, and the politics of sexuality, Smith provides an alternative lens to view the world by making connections between systems of oppression and offering suggestions for social change." * Washington Blade *"As a black lesbian feminist activist and scholar, Smith is a highly respected voice of conscience who speaks discomforting but necessary truths about the interlocking nature of oppressions within American culture and institutions. These landmark essays . . . show Smith challenging academic, political, and community organizations to expand their missions in order to include persons who have been perennially at the margins of our society. . . Springer International Publishing AG The Future is Digital: How Complexity and
Book SynopsisThis book describes in an easily accessible way how artificial intelligence (AI) will help us to overcome the ongoing rise in complexity and thus shape our lives and work in a not-too-distant future. AI has proven to be the latest tool for resolving issues created by the most recent surge in complexity, and the corollary is: those who delay or ignore AI, will be overwhelmed by complexity. The book starts with a broad description of the coevolution of technology and society that irreversibly leads to the sharp increase in complexity of our socioeconomic environment. The second chapter then covers concepts and principles of the new science of complexity which helps us to understand issues caused by socioeconomic complexity and provides methods for resolving them. Subsequently, a beginner’s guide to artificial intelligence helps readers to glance at fundamentals of this powerful technology capable of resolving issues created by socioeconomic complexity. The danger of allowing intelligent digital systems to make high-risk decisions as well as the consequences of possible misuse of AI for fraud and fake are also discussed. The following chapter explores the concepts of natural and digital ecosystems. Digital transformation of rigidly structured corporations and administrations into adaptive and evolving organisations are illustrated by a number of case studies. Next, the current hectic transition of industrial to digital society is described, its origins identified and outcomes predicted, highlighting issues created by the increase in complexity and showing how to resolve them using thinking tools such as a complexity mindset and digital tools such as artificial intelligence. Eventually, the last two chapters outline the author’s vision of the future digital economy and digital society. This book is accessible to everyone who is curious to glimpse into the future, no previous special knowledge of digital technology is required. Especially decision makers in politics, business, administration, banking, policy making, education, healthcare and defence, and their advisors will benefit from the book, as it will help them to contribute to the creation of the brave new digital world. It may also support investors to recognise which elements of digital technology will play the most important role in the near future.Table of Contents1. Coevolution of Technology and Society.- 2. A Gentle Guide to Complexity.- 3. Artificial Intelligence: Friend or FOE.- 4. Natural and Digital Ecosystems.- 5. We are in Transition from Industrial to Digital Economy.- 6. Diaphanes AG What′s Legit? – Critiques of Law and Strategies
Book SynopsisOnce considered a stepchild of social theory, legal criticism has recently received a great deal of attention, perpetuating what has always been an ambivalent relationship. On the one hand, law is praised for being a cultural achievement, on the other, it is criticized for being an instrument of state oppression. Legal criticism’s strategies to deal with this ambivalence differ greatly. While some seek to transcend the institution of law altogether, others advocate a transformation of the form of law or try to employ strategies to change the content of law, deconstruct its basis, or invent rights. By presenting a variety of approaches to legal criticism, What’s Legit? highlights transitions and exhibits irreconcilable differences of these approaches. Ultimately, What’s Legit? broadens debates that are all too often conducted only within the boundaries of separate theoretical currents.

De Gruyter The Transnational in Literary Studies: Potential
Book SynopsisThis volume clarifies the meanings and applications of the concept of the transnational and identifies areas in which the concept can be particularly useful. The division of the volume into three parts reflects areas which seem particularly amenable to analysis through a transnational lens. The chapters in Part 1 present case studies in which the concept replaces or complements traditionally dominant concepts in literary studies. These chapters demonstrate, for example, why some dramatic texts and performances can better be described as transnational than as postcolonial, and how the transnational underlies and complements concepts such as world literature. Part 2 assesses the advantages and limitations of writing literary history with a transnational focus. These chapters illustrate how such a perspective loosens the epistemic stranglehold of national historiographies, but they also argue that the transnational and national agendas of literary historiography are frequently entangled. The chapters in Part 3 identify transnational genres such as the transnational historical novel, transnational migrant fiction and translinguistic theatre, and analyse the specific poetics and politics of these genres.

De Gruyter Youth and Memory in Europe: Defining the Past,
Book SynopsisThis volume contends that young individuals across Europe relate to their country’s history in complex and often ambivalent ways. It pays attention to how both formal education and broader culture communicate ideas about the past, and how young people respond to these ideas. The studies collected in this volume show that such ideas about the past are central to the formation of the group identities of nations, social movements, or religious groups. Young people express received historical narratives in new, potentially subversive, ways. As young people tend to be more mobile and ready to interrogate their own roots than later generations, they selectively privilege certain aspects of their identities and their identification with their family or nation while neglecting others. This collection aims to correct the popular misperception that young people are indifferent towards history and prove instead that historical narratives are constitutive to their individual identities and their sense of belonging to something broader than themselves.

De Gruyter How Science Engages with Ethics and Why It Should
Book SynopsisWe live in an era of extreme claims versus weak consensus on issues critical to the public. Is climate change a hoax, or is it destroying our planet? Were the vaccines and social distancing measures of COVID-19 designed to protect us, or were they an invasion of our liberty? How do we determine the validity of these claims and others like them? Can we find a reliable middle ground leading to policies that help everyone? How Science Engages with Ethics and Why It Should makes an impassioned plea for a scientific analysis of ethics, discussing what such a method is, why we need it, and what it can offer that other methods cannot. With contributions from leading thinkers across a range of disciplines, Part 1 explores the challenges facing scientists and how to establish ground rules that will both protect human subjects and guide researchers in the future. Part 2 explores the importance of evidence-based science for topics such as climate change, social care, political polarization and
