    15 in stock

Book Synopsis"The Pari Dialogues" are the first in an annual series of essays contributed by experts in their fields who are known for the breadth and depth of their knowledge. The main focus of this first volume is on the dialogue between religion and science with essays by the former director of the Vatican Observatory who asks what should be the proper boundaries between religion and science and what can religion and science each say about creation? Other essays deal with the role of belief in the lives of scientists; the connection between science and Sufi mysticism; the parallel visions of Simone Weil and the theories of superstrings and multiverses; on ways in which religions can ensure a just society; the complementary visions of Western Science and the Native American world view; the possibilities of new paths to peace; and the nature of the creative act in both art and literature. The volume also includes a dialogue with the sculptor, Antony Gormley on how Buddhist meditation and his experience of "the inner darkness of the body" informs his art.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Origins and Creation by George V. • Surveying Ethnic Minorities: The Impact of Survey

Sociall en Cultureel Planbureau Surveying Ethnic Minorities: The Impact of Survey

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe relationship between survey design and the quality of survey data is the central focus of this book. With regard to data quality, the emphasis is on two aspects that seem to be the most relevant in this context: accuracy and comparability. For accuracy, we mainly focus on representativeness, or how well the population under study is represented by the respondents of a survey, as well as measurement, i.e., how the way in which data is collected from respondents might affect the responses they give. The focus in regards to comparability is on the comparability of data collected from different minority groups. The data is drawn from several large-scale surveys conducted among non-Western minorities in The Netherlands. Attention is also paid to the costs of surveys among non-Western minorities.

  • Sociall en Cultureel Planbureau Acceptance of Homosexuality in the Netherlands,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Dutch government wishes to promote the social acceptance of homosexuality. To gain an impression of the current status and the progress in achieving this objective, the government asked the Netherlands Institute for Social Research/SCP to carry out a study of the current statistics and trends in this regard. This report shows that the Netherlands is still the most gay-tolerant country in Europe. Nonetheless, there are limits to that tolerance and there are some groups in Dutch society that clearly have more difficulty with homosexuality than others (e.g., young people, members of orthodox religions, and non-Western migrants).

  • Durability of Geosynthetics, Second Edition

SBR Kennisoverdracht B.V. Durability of Geosynthetics, Second Edition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a state-of-the-art review of the life-limiting mechanisms of geosynthetics, the methods available to test and assess lifetime, and the means by which durability can be improved. It provides engineers with the information they need on the durability lifetime, bridging the knowledge gap between them and polymer scientists. The style of the handbook is deliberately non-technical, in that it avoids chemical formulas and makes widespread use of graphs and photographs. Summaries are provided for most sections. It shows how to predict the service life of geosynthetics based on state-of-the-art knowledge and in some cases provides numerical examples. Engineers can use it to decide what they should specify, scientists are shown how to perform extrapolations and derive reduction factors, and assessors are given a separate section indicating how they should treat the information presented to them, including the uncertainties of the methods of testing and extrapolation. While directed primarily at geotextiles, reference is made to geomembranes and their use in landfills, for which a supplementary chapter is added.First edition awarded with the International Geosynthetics Award 2014Table of ContentsPrefaceGuidance for the use of the report1 Introduction to durability assessment2 Introduction of geosynthetic3 Degradation mechanisms and reduction factorsAttachments

  • Urban Quay Walls

SBR Kennisoverdracht B.V. Urban Quay Walls

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the thirteenth century, quay walls of significant retaining height have been built in the Netherlands in urban environments. Over time, structural revisions were often carried out due to excessive deformations or the use of increasingly larger and deeper vessels. These historic quay walls were seldom designed for the current functional requirements they are subjected to. These mostly older quay walls require more maintenance and revisions to secure a certain degree of safety. In some cases they need to be demolished and completely rebuilt. Urban Quay Walls offers safety protocols and a clear approach on how to inspect, design and maintain urban quay walls. The book offers: - an insight on the development of urban quay walls; - a description of the main forms (as used in The Netherlands); - quicksteps for the inspection of existing quay walls. Urban Quay Walls presents a proposal for a uniform and standardised method to verify the actual state of current quay walls in urban environments. This handbook presents an overview of the development of urban quay walls over the course of time and describes the main types in use in the Netherlands. Subsequently, a method is presented for deciding whether or not a historic quay wall needs to be renovated, renewed or maintained. Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction. Chapter 2 Management, maintance and inventory. Chapter 3 Inspection. Chapter 4 Testing and consideration framework. Chapter 5 Repair or new structure. Chapter 6 Construction.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Merged Evolution: Long-term Complications of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMerged Evolution charts the implications of two major forces of change, information technology and biotechnology, combined with a third force, that of 'artifactual' information, which is handed down dichronically from computing device to computing device.Through developments anticipated in the near future, Dr. Goonatilake describes the merging of these three systems, a convergence which will profoundly affect the biological, social, and technical fields much more than previous studies have implied. Together these changes yield an entirely different history - and a different future of the world for life, nature and civilization. This book addresses the broader issue arising from these important developments using the unifying perspective of general evolutionary theory to yield a fresh and profound insight.Table of ContentsBiological evolution - the genetic lineage; the cultural stream of science; the computer information flowline; the exosomatic lineage develops its autonomy; biotechnology; the merging of culture and artificial information; the merging of culture and genes; the merging of biology and computing; the properties of merged evolution; an extended sociology - the structure of new "communities".
