Oxford University Press Inc Confronting the Caliphate Civil Resistance in

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis book is a must-read. * A. B. Al-Deen, CHOICE *Confronting the Caliphate is a rich, creative and thoughtful exploration of the conditions under which some civilians pushed back against jihadist rule. A combination of methods and examination of multiple cases allows the authors to make a significant contribution to an understudied dimension of jihadist insurgencies. * Marc Lynch, The George Washington University *Civil resistance is possible even in the most rigid and cruel regimes, as this eye-opening study reveals. In both direct and subtle ways, rebellious subjects have engaged in protests, non-cooperation, and other means of defying the Islamic State. Utilizing sophisticated data sets, this able team of scholars has mapped the kind of participants and conditions in which civil resistance is possible, and gauged the possibilities for its success. This book is a landmark in peace and conflict studies and deserves a wide reading by scholars, policy-makers, and anyone concerned about how citizens can respond to oppressive regimes. * Mark Juergensmeyer, author of When God Stops Fighting: How Religious Violence Ends *Svensson and coauthors have made an important and deeply researched contribution to our understanding of civilian agency under conditions of rebel governance with "Confronting the Caliphate," filling an important gap in a literature that has focused more on the determinants of support and collaboration with non-state armed groups and less on the equally important outcome of resistance. * Mara Redlich Revkin, Associate Professor of Law, Duke University School of Law *This critically important book examines the importance of civilian agency and non-violent resistance when militant groups control territory. As violent Islamist groups have sought to control territory and establish proto states or Caliphates, Svensson and his coauthors examine what role civilians play? Contrary to expectations, non-violent resistance has succeeded against all odds and in the most coercive environments. Using original empirically grounded analyses and original interviews, the book probes the 'political jiu-jitsu' of civil society and resistance confronting Jihadis in Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Mali, Syria, Yemen. It is a must read for students and scholars of conflict resolution and counter terrorism. * Mia Bloom, New America and Georgia State University *

Book SynopsisWho is responsible for juvenile delinquency? Mark D. Jacobs uses ethnographic, statistical, and literary methods to uncover the many levels of disorganization in American juvenile justice. By analyzing the continuities betwen normal casework and exceptional cases, he reveals that probation officers must commonly contrive informal measures to circumvent a system which routinely obstructs the delivery of services to their clients. Jacobs defines the concept of the no-fault society to describe the larger context of societal disorder and interpersonal manipulation that the juvenile justice system at once reflects and exacerbates.

  • With Respect to Sex

The University of Chicago Press With Respect to Sex

Book SynopsisWith Respect to Sex is an intimate ethnography that offers a provocative account of sexual and social difference in India. The subjects of this study are hijras or the third sex of India, individuals who occupy a unique, liminal space between male and female, sacred and profane. Hijras are men who sacrifice their genitalia to a goddess in return for the power to confer fertility on newlyweds and newborn children, a ritual role they are respected for, at the same time as they are stigmatized for their ambiguous sexuality. By focusing on the hijra community, Reddy sheds new light on Indian society and the intricate negotiations of identity across various domains of everyday life. Further, by reframing hijra identity through the local economy of respect, this ethnography highlights the complex relationships between local and global, sexual and moral, economies. This book will be regarded as the definitive work on hijras, one that will be of enormous interest to anthropologists, students o

  • States of Plague

The University of Chicago Press States of Plague

Book SynopsisStates of Plagueexamines Albert Camus's novelas a palimpsest of pandemic life, an uncannily relevant account of the psychology and politics of a public health crisis. As one of the most discussed books of the COVID-19 crisis, Albert Camus's classic novelThe Plaguehas become a new kind of literary touchstone. Surrounded by terror and uncertainty, often separated from loved ones or unable to travel, readers sought answers within the pages of Camus's 1947 tale about an Algerian city gripped by an epidemic. Many found in it a story about their own livesa book to shed light on a global health crisis. In thirteen linked chapters told in alternating voices, Alice Kaplan and Laura Marris hold the past and present ofThe Plaguein conversation, discovering how the novel has reached people in their current moment. Kaplan's chapters explore the book's tangled and vivid history, while Marris's are drawn to the ecology of landscape and language. Through these pages, they find that their sense oTrade Review“Camus argued that ‘The true work of art is one that says the least.' La Peste is such a work, and States of Plague is a moving, thoughtful, and scrupulous examination of both the novel and its readers, the book’s inheritors.” * Times Literary Supplement *"Across 13 insightful, deeply personal chapters, Kaplan and Marris explore the human side of communal trauma. Many chapters provide the sociohistorical context for understanding Camus, covering topics ranging from colonial cemeteries to toxic Oranian politics, the messy denouement of world war, and beyond. Other chapters trace the author’s experiences and choices in writing the novel—his writer's block, narrative identity, and literary restraint—and how he was received by the literary establishment. Importantly, the authors avoid scholarly detachment and instead share their insightful, often vulnerable, reflections in evocative prose that serves to reinforce the deeply humanistic importance of Camus’s thought." -- L.A. Wilkinson * CHOICE *"In this mélange of history, literary analysis, and memoir, the authors explore the intersection between a celebrated novel, current realities, scholarship, language, and the tricks that time and circumstance play on all of them. Seasoned literary historian Kaplan and poet and translator Marris, whose new translation of The Plague was published in 2021, team up to cultivate a deeper understanding of Camus’ classic novel. In alternating short essays, they braid together their distinct sensibilities to offer fresh insight and added significance to a canonical mid-20th-century book. . . . This is a notable addition to the literature about an indispensable French author." * Kirkus *"This intelligent study goes a long way in highlighting Camus's enduring legacy." * Publishers Weekly *“I thought I knew both The Plague and what it brings to the story of our own plague experience. After reading Kaplan and Marris’s States of Plague, I realize I could not have been more mistaken. This is a brilliant book that is always eloquent, often insightful, and, at times, simply heartbreaking.” * Robert Zaretsky, author of "Victories Never Last: Reading and Caregiving in a Time of Plague" *“Turning the intensity of a lockdown gaze on The Plague, Kaplan and Marris restore to Camus's constrained and unsettling allegory a world of associations, from occupied Paris in World War II to crumbling colonial cemeteries in Algiers. These erudite but highly personal reflections spiral outward from careful readings of the novel, relieving the mind like the ventilation of a long-closed room.” * Emily Ogden, author of "On Not Knowing: How to Love and Other Essays" *“In States of Plague, Kaplan and Marris combine their thought-provoking personal impressions with brilliant critical analyses based on the novel’s wealth of cultural, historical, and political contexts. Their complementary readings function both as a helpful introduction to The Plague and eye-opening observations about the novel’s contemporary relevance.” * Raymond Gay-Crosier, emeritus, University of Florida *“Reading this fascinating and often meditative collection of essays by two subject experts who are skilled readers and gifted writers helps us understand the sheer importance of looking. Even if metaphors fail, even if language only serves to illuminate what is impossible to beautify, seeing what is happening in the world is the only way to engage it.” * Full Stop *Table of ContentsPreface ix 1 We, Dr. Rieux 2 Rat Eurydice 3 Les séparés 4 On Restraint 5 Fieldwork 6 Half-Life 7 Atmospheric Changes 8 Toxic City 9 The Essay Garden 10 The Endless Sentence 11 Anthologies of Insignificance 12 The Ends of Wars and Plagues Are Messy 13 Blood Memory Acknowledgments Notes Sources Index

A pair of interacting Braitenberg vehicles is simple, but they can meander, wind around, and follow each another in a number of ways. In this book, Scott Hotton and Jeff Yoshimi show how dynamical systems theory—in particular the theory of open dynamic systems—can be used to analyze pairs of these vehicles in great detail. The result of the authors’ long-standing collaboration at the intersection of mathematics, philosophy, cognitive science, and biology, The Open Dynamics of Braitenberg Vehicles offers a rigorous mathematical foundation for embodied cognition, esp

Book SynopsisThis book offers an applied approach to criminology suitable for prospective police officers. It covers the fundamentals of criminological knowledge, theory and research, and their relevance to policing. The book is split into two parts, the first introducing the basics of criminology, and the second connecting criminological research to police practice. It focuses on the principles of evidence-based practice and encourages students to think critically about the issues covered. Core content includes the following: A history of policing in England and Wales, through a criminological lens. An overview of the literature on police culture, bias and discretion. A review of the challenges of applying criminological insights to policing, and the impact of the College of Policing code of ethics on police practice. An exploration of the challenges of contemporary policing, including complex crime, transnational investigationTrade ReviewThe delivery of policing in any democratic society presents a critical test of those democratic systems and civic institutions that seek to provide security for citizens and to protect those who are vulnerable or marginalised. Criminology for the Police is the first book to interrogate this enduring tension and competing interpretations of the relationship between crime and policing in the context of the College of Policing’s Police Education Qualifications Framework. The book introduces key ideas and concepts that underpin our understanding of crime as well as the design and delivery of twenty-first century policing and assesses their implications for those tasked with front-line policing. The book also outlines the growing importance of data and knowledge generation to the contemporary policing landscape and introduces readers to the basic skills required to use research and data to understand dynamic and complex challenges and improve the delivery of policing. Baroness Helena Kennedy The relationship between academic and policing is not new, but the introduction of the PEQF is a game changer and thousands of new recruits into the police are already finding themselves engaged in academic studies of policing that they might not have expected to be part of their role. Book SynopsisThis book examines how the process of remembering Stalinist repression in Romania has shifted from individual, family, and group representations of lived and witnessed experiences characteristic of the 1990s to more recent and state-sponsored expressions of historical remembrance through their incorporation in official commemorations, propaganda sites, and restorative and compensatory measures. Based on fieldwork dealing with Stalinist repression and memorialization, together with archival research on the secret police (Securitate), it adopts an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the resurfacing of particular themes. As such it draws on concepts from sociology, political science, and legal studies, related to memory, justice, redress, identity, accountability, and reconciliation. A study of competing narratives concerning the meaning of the past as part of a struggle over the legitimacy of the post-communist state, Repression, Resistance, and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania Trade Review'This study makes a significant contribution to post-communist and memory studies by enhancing the comparative dimension that can be brought to these subjects. As such, the book has interdisciplinary and international appeal at the level of university undergraduates and postgraduates in the fields of history and social sciences. At the same time, Dr Ciobanu performs a civic duty, one which will help to dispel the mists of distortion which hover in the minds of many over the Communist past of Romania.' - Dennis Deletant, Emeritus Professor, University College London, UK'Based on an astonishing variety of sources, the author skilfully weaves together the insights of both memory studies and transitional justice research to provide a fascinating account of Romania’s protracted struggles to come to terms with its painful history. I highly recommend this to everyone interested in the politics of memory and identity in Central and Eastern Europe today.' - Eva-Clarita Pettai, Imre Kertész Kolleg, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany‘Ciobanu’s book poses difficult questions about a haunting past. The answers she provides are just as disturbing as the questions themselves – and this is the greatest merit of this work. As such, Ciobanu’s monograph constitutes a morally uneasy reading that refuses the hasty gesture of condemning the past without comprehending its complex intricacies and moral ambiguities. It is, at the same time, a theoretically reflexive and analytically lucid approach that sets the ground for a contextualized understanding of a troubled and still troubling past.’ - Mihai S. Rusu‘ … makes an important contribution to our understanding of the processes of memory making in post-communist Romania by focusing on several agents of memory and demonstrating how a master narrative is imposed. Moreover, the book represents a valuable resource for the scholars of the memory of communism in Eastern Europe as well as for those interested in the role-played by civil society actors in the making of memory discourses.’ - Caterina Preda, Memory StudiesTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisDrawing on a novel blend of moral philosophy, social science, psychoanalytic theory and continental philosophy, this book offers up a diagnosis of contemporary liberal capitalist society and the increasingly febrile culture we occupy when it comes to matters of harm. On what basis can we say that something is harmful? How are we supposed to judge between competing opinions on the harmfulness of a particular behaviour, practice, or industry? Can we avoid drifting off into relativism when it comes to judgements about harm? In an age of deep cultural and political discord about what is and is not harmful, providing answers to such questions is more important than ever. Appraising the current state of the concept of social harm in academic scholarship and every-day life, Thomas Raymen finds a concept in an underdeveloped state of disorder, trapped in interminable deadlocks and shrill disagreements about what should and should not be considered harmful. To explain the genesisTrade Review'This book is a landmark in the study of zemiology and social harm. Surveying the zemiological landscape, Raymen finds the concept of social harm to be in a state of disorder, and takes us on a historical, philosophical, political, and psychoanalytic journey of remarkable scale and scope. Arriving back at the present, this book equips its readers with a new set of questions, tools, and insights to categorise and critique myriad zemiological positions as well as a powerful perspective from which to ask questions about social harm in the 21st century. Required reading for anyone interested in social harm.'Anthony Lloyd, Associate Professor of Criminology and Sociology, Teesside University'If by chance this book does not receive classic status and act as a new foundation for the study of social harm, it will be yet another indication that the social sciences are in terminal decline, and nothing can be done to slow the descent.'Simon Winlow, Professor of Criminology, Northumbria University'New criminology books are commonplace, but theoretically ground-breaking ones that make a significant leap forward in a core area of our discipline are truly rare. This book falls into the latter category. It is a book that will either make you think again, or it will give clarity and coherence to those inchoate thoughts that have been in the back of your head but that you have never managed to articulate. Book SynopsisSocial media has fundamentally transformed political life, driving a surge in far-right extremism. In recent years, radical anti-democratic ideologies have entered into the political mainstream, fueled by energy from extreme online environments. But why do far-right extremist movements seem to thrive so well on social media platforms? What takes place within the fringe online spaces that seem to function as incubators for violent extremists? To answer these questions, this book goes inside the murder capital of the racist Internet, examining 20 years of conversations on Stormfront.org. Using a combination of computational text analysis and close reading, we seek a deeper understanding of the emotional and social effects of being part of an extremist community. We lay the foundation of a new way of understanding online extremism, building on the tradition of Émile Durkheim and Randall Collins. We find that online radicalization is not merely an effect of repeated one-sided arguments,Trade Review“Research on the far right is still rare, and the far right has even more rarely been addressed as a social movement. This engaging and important book, with its systematic analysis of identities, discourses and affects represents a valuable exception and great contribution to this scholarship. This volume not only provide a superb analysis (and analytically sounded) of Stormfront and the use of social media , but also offer insights to the current far right politics landscape and dynamics overall, much deeper than could any electoral result”- Manuela Caiani, Associate Professor, Political Science at the Scuola Normale Superiore“This ambitious and pioneering book casts new light on the process of radicalization online. Weaving together insights derived from digital ethnography, social network analysis, and natural language processing, Intimate Communities of Hate, reveals how shared emotions and collective identity power the Stormfront extremist community in the United States. Essential reading for those who are interested in studying extremism, or how to combine cutting-edge qualitative and quantitative techniques to do so.”- Chris Bail, Professor of Sociology, Political Science, and Public Policy at Duke University"From two of the top experts on far-right extremism, Intimate Communities of Hate: Why Social Media Fuels Far-Right Extremism represents a truly innovative and breakthrough work of research. Its contribution lies in what is the most long-term and detailed analysis of far-right online communities coupled with a cutting-edge and much needed call to reconsider how we think about and explain what has become known as “online radicalization.” Intimate Communities of Hate raises the bar for the entire field of extremism and terrorism research showing how an extensive empirical investigation of a single case study can be conducted in a way that employs sophisticated analytic procedures and provides thought provoking and policy relevant theoretical insights. De Maillard draws upon a wide range of relevant conditions to discern and interpret both broad and subtle patterns across several of the major elements of policing. An essential addition to the library of police scholars. Stephen Mastrofski, University Professor Emeritus of Criminology, Law & Society, George Mason UniversityThe police which originated as a genuinely national institution, has rarely been studied comparatively. With the increasing internationalisation of police work, police research is also beginning to formulate systematic comparative approaches - a perspective for which this highly recommendable book points the way. – Thomas Bierschenk, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, German."International comparison is now a major topic in police science. This book, written by a renowned scholar in this field, presents the major debates and topics of concern in the international police studies. Book SynopsisThis book offers an analytical review of the state of knowledge on elderly sexual abuse and presents new data that will confront some of the accepted ideas and some of the myths associated with this specific form of sexual violence. Sexual violence research has often considered children to be the most vulnerable population. However, another population just as vulnerable to sexual abuse but often overlooked by researchers, is the elderly. Evidence shows that elderly victims are more likely to be attacked by strangers, most likely to be victimized in their own homes, and are usually less capable of resisting a physical attack. Drawing on a large and representative dataset, Elderly Sexual Abuse offers a full and theoretically informed picture of the offenders and their crimes. In addition to a specific chapter devoted to prevention and criminal investigation, the book also connects research to practice, exploring what the findings mean for professionals working with theseTrade ReviewThis book represents the first attempt ever to study systematically the sexual abuse of elderly persons. The routine activities of elderly persons normally protect them from risks and abuses. Yet, paradoxically, in some settings elderly persons are in a very weak position to protect themselves. That’s why the current book is so useful. —Marcus K. Felson, PhD, Professor, Texas State University – San MarcosDespite the popular rhetoric of old age being the era of "golden years" the fact is that it is an age of higher vulnerability and enhanced susceptibility to various kinds of victimization. COVID-19 pandemic revealed to unsuspecting Canadians the dire and victimizing conditions in residential care homes where a large number of elderly Canadians languish for the remainder of their lives. This book is a laudable effort to draw attention to sexual abuse of the elderly, a neglected type of victimization that surprisingly has not generated much research and only skimpy literature, due apparently to its hidden nature and prohibitive dark figure. The book is a valiant and commendable attempt to fill this glaring gap in what may be called "geronto victimology". Most people usually think of sexual victimization of the elderly as an extremely rare occurence since older individuals do not seem to be ‘attractive’ sexual targets. To them the book’s revelations will come as a surprise. One finding the book reveals is that opportunity and routine activities play a more important role in triggering sexual victimization of the elderly than target sexual attractiveness does. The book takes a phenomenological approach and pays attention to situational opportunities that create, facilitate or precipitate sexual abuse of elderly victims. And instead of the traditional, though futile, emphasis on the causes the authors are to be given credit for directing their attention to offenders’ motives . The authors should also be given credit for not engaging in endless regurgitation of causal factors and for taking instead a more dynamic approach focusing on routine activities, rational choice theories as well as the criminal event perspective. The book ends with useful suggestions pertaining to the prevention of sexual abuse of the elderly in both residential care settings and the community at large and by offering some helpful tips for improving the investigation of elderly sexual victimization.—Ezzat Fattah, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser UniversityElderly Sexual Abuse: Theory, Research, and Practice is a superb comprehensive compendium of current state of the art and science of this increasingly important subspeciality of elder abuse. This substantive textbook is indispensable to the serious practitioner. In addition to being readable and practically useful to law enforcement, academics, and geriatric health professionals, it will be invaluable to everyone who has an interest in the elderly sexual abuse victim, their offenders, and unique attributes of their crimes.—Mark E. Book SynopsisEmilie Prattico has used the lens of a discourse-theoretic conception of deliberative democracy to engage eight prominent colleagues in stimulating interviews. They critically illuminate the various ways that a sound democratic regime depends upon the deliberative milieu of an inclusive public sphere. - Jürgen HabermasThe continued rise of populism and authoritarianism throughout the world has witnessed an alarming attack on basic democratic freedoms and led to a divided political and social world. Few thinkers have done as much as Jürgen Habermas to understand and critique these problems, perhaps most famously through his notions of the public sphere, deliberative democracy, and discourse ethics. In this fascinating book, Emilie Prattico considers the crisis of democracy from a Habermasian standpoint via engaging interviews with an outstanding lineup of leading philosophers and thinkers. The following key topics are unpacked and explored:Table of ContentsForeword Jürgen Habermas Introduction Emilie Prattico 1. Can some basic rights and liberties be given up to safeguard democracy? • Equality Education and Human Rights in the United

Taylor & Francis Ltd Equality Education and Human Rights in the United

Book SynopsisThis book offers an uncompromising and rigorous analysis of education and human rights by examining issues related to gender, race, sexuality, disability, and social class. Written as a companion to the very successful U.K. version, this volume reflects the economic, political, social, and cultural changes in educational and political policy and practice in the United States. Offering a comprehensive look at these areas, this book is an essential resource across a wide range of disciplines and for all those interested in education, social policy, and equality.Trade ReviewIt is appropriate that Peter McLaren introduces this volume in his inimitably plaintive and frenetic fashion. Mike Cole’s new collection does not slow down from there. The chapters provide hard-hitting presentations of a given social injustice, each combining historical depth with conceptual heft. This volume is a necessary reminder of not just where we have been but also of where we are headed. Despite the assault on schools from myriad ideological sources -- neoliberalism, neoconservativism, neofascism, neonazism, white supremacy -- and the growing number of policy makers who embrace them, it is here that the authors in this volume, as critical pedagogues and resistance theorists, continue to seek hope.– John E Petrovic, The University of Alabama, author of Unschooling Critical Pedagogy, Unfixing Schools. Finding ourselves at a critical historical juncture with respect to questions of equality and human rights in education, this timely volume offers readers a powerful compilation of thought-provoking essays that speak to the very root of inequalities and offers valuable alternatives for genuinely enacting educational political projects that are in sync with our revolutionary dreams. – Antonia Darder, Professor Emerita, Loyola Marymount University, USAMike Cole has edited an outstanding collection of essays from internationally known scholars who analyze the current political threats to democracy particularly from the right-wing. The issues of gender, disabilities, sexuality, ecology, class and others are clearly articulated within a political context. The essays boldly confront the significant dilemmas and conflicts that all of us face. The book is an indispensable and excellent read for all scholars and educators committed to social justice and equity in these nightmarish times. It is a must read.– William M. Reynolds, Georgia Southern University, USAThis is an astonishing book! So strong yet subtle, so well written in easy-to-understand language clarifying sometimes complex concepts and analysis- and, overtly written by various chapter writers from the heart, from feeling, from cool outrage at the tragic inequalities within the USA and its education systems. This is a brilliant and moving and clearly Marxist critique that goes beyond critique, into resistance and `what we can do’. I am so full of admiration for this book- I wish all USA teachers in schools, community colleges and universities would read it. That would set the Marxist cat among the Capitalist pigeons!– Dave Hill, Emeritus Research Professor of Education, Anglia Ruskin University, UKTable of ContentsForeword: Democracy Under Siege and the Rise of the Unthinkable; Introduction: Equality and Human Rights in the United States today1.
