  • Criminal Justice in Scotland

Taylor & Francis Ltd Criminal Justice in Scotland

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublished in 1999. Scottish criminal law and procedure are very different from their counterparts elsewhere in the United Kingdom. This book is the first socio-legal account of the Scottish criminal justice process and its constituent institutions. Its aims are: to explain the operation of the various elements which make up the system'; to summarise the considerable volume of relevant Scottish research; and to locate this knowledge within contemporary theorising about criminal justice. To this end, the editors commissioned a team of experts to write chapters on the various stages of institutions of the Scottish criminal justice process. Given Scotland's broad social and cultural similarities to the rest of the United Kingdom, the book also provides a useful comparative perspective which should help to discourage the tendency towards overly ethnocentric theorising south of the border. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the late 1950s the psychiatrist R.D.Laing and psychoanalyst Aaron Esterson spent five years interviewing eleven families of female patients diagnosed as 'schizophrenic'. Sanity, Madness and the Family is the result of their work. Eleven vivid case studies, often dramatic and disturbing, reveal patterns of affection and fear, manipulation and indifference within the family. But it was the conclusions they drew from their research that caused such controversy: they suggest that some forms of mental disorder are only comprehensible within their social and family contexts; their symptoms the manifestations of people struggling to live in untenable situations. Sanity, Madness and the Family was met with widespread hostility by the psychiatric profession on its first publication, where the prevailing view was to treat psychosis as a medical problem to be solved. Yet it has done a great deal to draw attention to the complex and contested nature of psychosis. Book SynopsisThrough object-based case studies of garments from the ancient past through to the 21st century, Margaret Maynard reveals the countless ways the temporal is woven into our attire. From the physical effects of age on garments to their changing cultural significance, time and fashion are inextricably linked. Every garment has its own pace and narrative, and every dress practice is rich with temporal associations: wearing' time in the form wristwatches, marking key moments in time from marriage to death, defying' time with beauty products, preserving and re-imagining time through vintage, and concepts of timeless' and classic' styles. This ground-breaking book presents a complete rethinking of the study of global fashion history, revealing the complex nature of changing fashion when viewed through the lens of time and challenging Eurocentric approaches such as the periodization of style and the arbitrary division of western' and non-western' fashion. Fashion in Time is essential rTrade ReviewDrawing on a lifetime of scholarship, Margaret Maynard uses time to explore the complexity of dress in a whirlwind account across global history, revealing diverse clothing practices from the adorned bodies of ancient times to 3D-printed dress styles of today. * Karen Tranberg Hansen, Northwestern University, USA *Margaret Maynard is a pioneer in global fashion studies and her new book, Dressed in Time, creatively approaches the field with rigor and purpose. Book SynopsisThis book examines emerging automated technologies and systems and the increasingly prominent roles that each plays in our lives and our imagined futures. It asks how technological futures are being constituted and the roles anthropologists can play in their making; how anthropologists engage with emerging technologies within their fieldwork contexts in research which seeks to influence future design; how to create critical and interventional approaches to technology design and innovation; and how a critical anthropology of the way that emerging technologies are experienced in everyday life circumstances offers new insights for future-making practices. In pursuing these questions, this book responds to a call for new anthropologies that respond to the current and emerging technological environments in which we live, environments for which thinking critically about the possible, plausible, and impossible futures are no longer sufficient. Book SynopsisPioneering essays that demonstrate the significance of the seasons for philosophy, environmental thought, anthropology, cultural studies, aesthetics, poetics, and literary criticism.Although the seasons have been a perennial theme in literature and art, their significance for philosophy and environmental theory has remained largely unexplored. This pioneering book demonstrates the ways in which inquiry into the seasons reveals new and illuminating perspectives for philosophy, environmental thought, anthropology, cultural studies, aesthetics, poetics, and literary criticism. The Seasons opens up new avenues for research in these fields and provides a valuable resource for teachers and students of the environmental humanities. The innovative essays herein address a wide range of seasonal cultures and geographies, from the traditional Western model of the four seasons??spring, summer, fall, and winter??to the Indigenous seasons of Australia and the Arctic. Exemplifying the crucial importance of interdisciplinary research, The Seasons makes a compelling case for the relevance of the seasons to our daily lives, scientific understanding, diverse cultural practices, and politics.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe English and Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study constituted an invaluable natural experiment in which there was a rapid, easily-timed transition from a profoundly depriving environment in Romanian institutions to generally well-functioning adoptive families in England. Multimodal methods of assessment were used throughout the assessments at 4, 6, 11, and 15 years of age. Four key findings were particularly striking. First, institutional deprivation was associated with an apparently deprivation-specific pattern of combinations of quasiautism, disinhibited attachment, cognitive impairment, and inattention/overactivity. Second, longitudinal growth curves showed a relative deceleration of growth between 11 and 15 years (possibly due to early puberty). Third, institutional deprivation without subnutrition was associated with a major impairment in head growth. Fourth, the effects of institutional deprivation were as strong at 15 years as they had been earlier in childhood.Table of Contents1. Bristol University Press Beyond Bricks and Mortar

Book SynopsisSocial housing continues to decline as existing tenanted homes are sold to their occupiers and run-down council estates are demolished. Demonstrating the value of the Housing Plus' approach investment beyond bricks and mortar this book outlines the role social landlords can play in tackling community problems. By investing in estate renewal, helping to house the vulnerable, offering a wide range of tenures and encouraging community housing, this approach builds links between housing design and a wider social value agenda. With the voices of tenants and frontline staff at the forefront, Anne Power demonstrates how policy and practice can shift the bias against social housing in favour of its re-expansion.

Book SynopsisScience and technology produce a wide range of benefits in society but they also create harm, both of which are unequally distributed across social groups and geographic regions. This incisive book provides a set of analytical tools to understand how inequality relating to science and technology is produced, and how the field can be reorganized to make good on its promise to improve life for all. Using a range of evidence and examples, Frickel and Moore show that science and technology are closely bound up with social inequalities, including linked problems of poor health, environmental degradation, racism, and sexism. They use the frame of scientific inequality formations to investigate the technoscientific sources of unequal power relations in society, examining issues such as the underdevelopment of non-profitable technologies, how laws and markets direct scientific advances, and the exclusion of certain social groups from the creation of knowledge and solutions relevant to their lives. This timely book illuminates interventions that redirect science and technology toward more equitable ends with the potential to be more widely distributed, charting a path to a more just future.

Book SynopsisMichael Burawoy has helped to reshape the theory and practice of sociology across the Western world. Public Sociology is his most thoroughgoing attempt to explore what a truly committed, engaged sociology should look like in the twenty-first century. Burawoy looks back on the defining moments of his intellectual journey, exploring his pivotal early experiences as a researcher, such as his fieldwork in a Zambian copper mine and a Chicago factory. He recounts his time as a graduate and professor during the ideological ferment in sociology departments of the 1970s, and explores how his experiences intersected with a changing political and intellectual world up to the present. Recalling Max Weber, Burawoy argues that sociology is much more than just a discipline – it is a vocation, to be practiced everywhere and by everyone.Trade Review“Michael Burawoy has written a fascinating intellectual autobiography, reconstructing the sociological canon along the way. This is a powerful call for sociology to recover its public mission.”Edward Webster, University of the Witwatersrand “Behind Michael Burawoy’s inspirational new book lies his extraordinary experiences alongside, and research into, the lives of workers in Zambia, Hungary, Russia, and Chicago. At each stop in his journey, he asks: What is this worker’s life like? And how could it be? This is such a welcome and important book – read it and pass it on.”Arlie Hochschild, author of Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right “Michael Burawoy argues for a sociology that encourages and informs critical public discussions on the preservation of our society. His illuminating personal trajectory, used as an object of analysis and placed in a wider social context, is a must-read.”William Julius Wilson, Harvard University“This is no dry textbook. It deserves a much wider readership among all of us who know that we need to extend our utopian and anti-utopian commitments.”Red Pepper“Burawoy’s Public sociology is required reading for anyone embarking or reflecting on their sociological journey and practice. Book SynopsisWe commonly think of society as made of and by humans, but with the proliferation of machine learning and AI technologies, this is clearly no longer the case. Billions of automated systems tacitly contribute to the social construction of reality by drawing algorithmic distinctions between the visible and the invisible, the relevant and the irrelevant, the likely and the unlikely – on and beyond platforms. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, this book develops an original sociology of algorithms as social agents, actively participating in social life. Through a wide range of examples, Massimo Airoldi shows how society shapes algorithmic code, and how this culture in the code guides the practical behaviour of the code in the culture, shaping society in turn. The ‘machine habitus’ is the generative mechanism at work throughout myriads of feedback loops linking humans with artificial social agents, in the context of digital infrastructures and pre-digital social structures. Machine Habitus will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology, media and cultural studies, science and technology studies and information technology, and to anyone interested in the growing role of algorithms and AI in our social and cultural life.Trade Review‘I strongly suspect that Massimo Airoldi’s “machine habitus” is a concept that will be utilized and debated for years to come. At its centre, this book is a lively and original take on how we can understand social connections and society itself in a world laced with algorithms: it is an agenda-setting text.’David Beer, University of York ‘Machine Habitus is without question an original and high-quality book. It is one of the first books that uses sociological theory to make sense of machine learning algorithms. Hence it will be essential reading for anyone interested in understanding algorithms and their growing role in our societies.’Simon Egbert, Universität BielefeldTable of ContentsAcknowledgments List of Figures List of Tables Preface 1. Book SynopsisThis book sets out to understand the ethical dimension of Black lives and deaths in the modern period. Recent events—from the brutal murder of George Floyd to the pervasive violence meted out daily on the streets of our cities—have demonstrated all too clearly the fundamental trait that shapes our contemporary moment: the Black condition is defined by indignity. Ajari takes dignity as his starting point because dignity is what white people try to abolish in their violence toward Black people, and it is what they deprive themselves of in exerting this violence. Dignity is also what Black people collectively affirm when they rise up against white domination. When a young Black man or woman’s dignity is taken from them as the result of assault, rape, or assassination at the hands of the state, the roots of a long history of struggle, conquest, and affirmation of African humanity are exposed and shaken. Above all, dignity is the ability of the oppressed, trapped between life and death, to remain standing. Dignity or Death offers an uncompromising critical analysis of the European philosophical tradition in order to recover the misunderstood history of radical thought in Black worlds. Slave uprisings, Negritude, radical Christian traditions in North America and South Africa, and political ontology are all steps on a long and troubled path of liberation.Trade Review“In the controversy raging in many countries about ‘decolonial’ thought, this book by the young philosopher Norman Ajari will not go unnoticed. Its ambition, richness, and militant passion will give others the means to learn more about this new paradigm and to take stock of its internal diversity.”Etienne BalibarTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroductionPart One: Dignity Re-embodiedChapter One: Decolonizing Moral PhilosophyChapter 2: IndignityChapter 3: Our Dignity is Older than UsPart Two: Caliban the Political TheologianChapter 4: The Universal by AccidentChapter 5: A Theology of Black Dignity in North AmericaChapter 6: Ubuntu: Philosophy, Religion, and Community in Black AfricaPart Three: Forms-of-death in the European NecropolisChapter 7: Recognition and Dignity in the Era of Global ApartheidConclusion: Black Political Ontology and Black DignityNotesIndex

Book SynopsisRazors, tweezers, wax and hair removal creams: these are the tools for the initiation rites that signal the passage from girl to woman. Today the only acceptable places for a woman to have hair are on her head (preferably long), her eyebrows (not too wild) and eyelashes (not too sparse). All kinds of cosmetics are sold to achieve the desired effect of localized luxuriance. At the same time, the industry of removing hair everywhere else on the body advances relentlessly. Hair is no longer a sign of joy but a battleground of cosmetic surgery. In this short book, the Catalan writer Bel Olid draws on personal experience to dismantle preconceived ideas about the supposed benefits of waxing and shaving, and to lay bare the social penalties that are meted out to any woman who allows their body hair to grow. With clarity and courage, Bel Olid exposes the contradictions and hidden costs of hair removal, and issues a rousing call to women everywhere to set themselves free from the urge to please everyone else and to focus, instead, on what pleases them.Trade Review‘Insightful, ferociously feminist and always humane. I devoured this.’Kerry Hudson, author of Lowborn: Growing Up, Getting Away and Returning to Britain's Poorest Towns ‘This smart, funny, thought-provoking book tackles a serious social and political problem: once you start reading it, you won't want to put it down.’Aurélie Vialette, Stony Brook University‘Excellent, snappy treatise. Olid pulls off a masterful balance of academic erudition and accessible, crisp prose. Persuasive and thought-provoking, this brisk volume deserves a broad audience.’Publisher's Weekly“Olid’s account is thoughtful and thorough: through the prism of her own experience, she convincingly articulates the stakes of this ordinary predicament and makes a robust case for the centrality of body hair to interlocking forms of oppression, both real and symbolic.’Times Literary Supplement

Book SynopsisIn October 2016, thirty intellectuals and artists from Africa, its diasporas, and beyond gathered together in Dakar and Saint-Louis, Senegal, to reflect on the present and future of Africa in the midst of transformations that are sweeping through the contemporary world. The aim was to take stock of the renewal of Afro-diasporic critical thought and to discuss the new perspectives emerging from the ongoing projects constructing political, cultural, and social imaginaries for and from the African continent. This book brings together and makes available to the English-speaking world the material presented at the 2016 Ateliers de la pensée – Workshops of Thought – in Dakar. The authors deal with a wide range of issues, including decolonization, the development of social utopias, and the pursuit of new forms of political, economic, and social production on the African continent. Running throughout is a constant concern to interrogate the categories and frames of meaning that have served to characterize the dynamics of the African continent and a shared desire to produce new frames of intelligibility through which to see Africa’s present realities and its future. The contributions also attest to the view that there is no African question that is not also a global question, and that the Africanization of the global question will be a decisive feature of the twenty-first century. To Write the Africa World and its companion volume The Politics of Time will be indispensable for anyone interested in Africa – its past, present, and future – and in the new forms of critical thought emerging from Africa and the Global South.Trade Review“Questions to do with the world and its relationship with Africa have never been more urgent, and Africa is the richest and most indispensable source and location for thinking about these issues. Book SynopsisAs we enter the third decade of the twenty-first century, the world is undergoing a major historical shift: Africa, and the Global South more generally, is increasingly becoming a principal theatre in which the future of the planet plays itself out. But not only this: Africa is at the same time emerging as one of the great laboratories for novel forms of social, economic, political, intellectual, cultural, and artistic life. Often arising in unexpected places, these new forms of life materialize in practices that draw deeply from collective memory while simultaneously assuming distinctly contemporary, even futuristic, guises. In November 2017, the second session of the Ateliers de la pensée – Workshops of Thought – was held in Dakar, Senegal. Fifty African and diasporic intellectuals and artists participated and their debates unfolded along numerous thematic lines, approached from the standpoints of many different disciplines. This volume is the result of that encounter. Among the many topics discussed were the concurrence and entanglement of multiple temporalities, the politics of life in the Anthropocene, the project of decolonization, and the preservation and transmission of different ways of knowing. At a time when the world is haunted by the specter of its own end, the contributors to this volume ask whether one can, by taking Africa as a point of departure, seize hold of other options for the future – not only for Africa, but for the world. The Politics of Time and its companion volume, To Write the Africa World, will be indispensable works for anyone interested in Africa – its past, present, and future – and in the new forms of critical thought emerging from Africa and the Global South.Trade Review“This powerful, multivalent collection captures the effervescent thought and energy of the Ateliers de la pensée, offering new conceptualizations of time and history and new visions of Africa’s futures.”Laurent Dubois, Duke University“The Politics of Time is an urgently necessary and accessible intervention of African philosophy and political theory into the discourse of global affairs... If you mean no harm, then it can't be racist. Yes, it can. There are anti-discrimination laws now, so racism no longer occurs. Incorrect. Some of my best friends are Black, so I can't be racist. Book SynopsisThe #MeToo movement created more opportunities for women to speak up about sexual assault. But we are also living in a time when “fake news” and “alternative facts” call into question the very nature of truth. This troubling paradox is at the heart of this compelling book. The convergence of #MeToo and the crisis of post-truth is used to explore the experiences of women and people of color whose claims around issues of sexual violence are often held in doubt. Banet-Weiser and Higgins investigate how the gendered and racialized logics of “believability” are defined and contested within media culture, proposing that a mediated “economy of believability” is the context in which public bids for truth about sexual violence are made, negotiated, and authorized today.Trade Review“Believability … is an essential text for anyone interested in the problem of sexual violence, feminist politics after #MeToo, or contestations around truth in our hyper-mediated and privatised public sphere. … [It]offers the best and most nuanced analysis of the cultural significance of #MeToo I have read … the book is not only a crucial contribution to feminist thought, but also an important step towards reconceptualising the cultural politics of belief and truth in transformative feminist ways.”European Journal of Cultural Studies"Banet-Weiser and Higgins’s timely book presents a powerful feminist analysis of the interacting forces of belief, media and sexual violence in the post-truth era… a transdisciplinary masterpiece.”LSE Review of Books“Carefully crafted and apt … a must read.” CHOICETable of ContentsIntroduction: (Post)Truth, Belief, Media, and Sexual Violence1 Construction: #MeToo Media and Representations of Believability2 Commodification: Buying and Selling Belief in the #MeToo Marketplace3 Contest: Media, ‘Mob Justice’, and the Digitization of Doubt4 Conditional: Kavanaughs, Karens, and the Struggle for VictimhoodConclusion: #BelieveWomen, RevisitedReferencesIndex

Book SynopsisA key feature of those who work for the state, in the legal system and in public services is that they claim to be putting their own personal interests aside and working in a disinterested fashion, for the public good. But is disinterested behaviour possible? Can law be treated as a set of universal rules that are independent of particular interests, or is this mere ideology? Is the state bureaucracy a universal class, as Hegel thought, or a structure that serves the interests of the dominant class, as Marx claimed? In his lecture courses at the Collège de France in 198788 and 198889, Pierre Bourdieu addressed these questions by examining the formation of the legal and bureaucratic fields characteristic of the modern state, uncovering the historical and social conditions that enable a social group to form and find its own interests in the very fact of serving interests that go beyond it. For a disinterested universe to emerge, it needs both the invention of a public service,

  • What is Feminist Sociology

John Wiley and Sons Ltd What is Feminist Sociology

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat does it mean to say that there is a feminist sociology? And how might we engage the full potential of a feminist sociological imagination? These questions lie at the heart of Jo Reger's slim guide to a powerful tool, which has a long history in US sociology and yet remains as urgently needed as ever. Grounded in a need to change both society and the discipline, feminist sociology challenges the foundations of traditional social science and articulates new ways of creating knowledge, doing research, and understanding the role of researchers and the people they study. Drawing on concepts such as positionality and reflexivity and emphasizing the importance of feminist ethics, emotions, activism, and transformation, this concise book traces out what it means to engage in feminist sociology and to claim the identity of a feminist sociologist.

Book SynopsisPodcasting burst onto the media landscape in the early 2000s. At the time, there were hopes it mightusher in a new wave of amateur and professional cultural production and represent an alternate model for how to produce, share, circulate, and experience new voices and perspectives. Twenty years later, podcasting is at a critical juncture in its relatively young history: a moment where the early ideals of open standards and platform-neutral distribution are giving way to services that prioritize lean-back listening and monetizable media experiences. This bookprovides an accessible and comprehensive account of one of digital media's most vibrant formats. Focusing on the historical changes shaping podcasts as a media format, the book explores theindustrial, technological, and cultural components of podcasting alongside case studies of various podcasts, industry publications, and streaming audio platforms (e.g. Spotify, Google, and Apple Podcasts).Jeremy Wade Morrisarguesthatas streaming platforms push to make podcasting more industrialized, accessible, user-friendly, and similar to other audio media like music or audiobooks, they threatenpodcasting's early, though always unrealized, promises. This is the go-to introduction for students and researchers of media, communication, and cultural studies, as well as readers who enjoy making and listening to podcasts.
