Book SynopsisThe increasing influence of digital media on all aspects of life, especially the use of Internet and smartphone, has not left even the field of healthcare practice untouched. Telerehabilitation, implying the use of telecommunications in rehabilitation activities, is being used widely in the treatment of communication and mental health disorders. The use of telerehabilitation services makes rehabilitation more feasible, fast, time-saving and cost-effective for people who face constraints in physically presenting themselves to healthcare providers due to extent of retardation, illness or commuting issues. It is thus a boon for the people who stay in remote areas and have no access to healthcare professionals in close vicinity. Therefore, research is underway on the optimal means to deliver telerehabilitation services both locally and globally and is now seen as a critical activity in healthcare. • Youth Homelessness in Late Modernity: Reflexive

Springer Verlag, Singapore Youth Homelessness in Late Modernity: Reflexive

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the identities, embodied experiences, and personal relationships of young people experiencing homelessness, and analyses these in relation to the material and symbolic position that youth homelessness occupies in modern societies. Drawing on empirical research conducted in both urban and rural areas, the book situates young people’s experiences of homelessness within a theoretical framework that connects embodied identities and relationships with processes of social change. The book theorises a ‘symbolic economy of youth homelessness’ that encompasses the subjective, aesthetic, and relational dimensions of homelessness. This theory shows the personal, interpersonal and affective suffering that is caused by the relations of power and privilege that produce contemporary youth homelessness. The book is unique in the way in which it places youth homelessness within the wider contexts of inequality, and social change. Whilst contemporary discussions of youth homelessness understand the topic as a discrete ‘social problem’, this book demonstrates the position that youth homelessness occupies within wider social processes, inequalities, and theoretical debates, addressing theories of social change in late modernity and their relationship to the cultural construction of youth. These theoretical debates are made concrete by means of an exploration of an important form of contemporary inequality: youth homelessness.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: Understanding Youth Homelessness.- Chapter 2 Youth Homelessness, Reflexivity and Inequality in Late Modernity.- Chapter 3 Young Homeless Subjectivities: A Symbolic Economy.- Chapter 4 Identity: Becoming a Homeless Youth.- Chapter 5 Identity: Subverting Homelessness and Making a Home.- Chapter 6 Bodies: Being and Feeling Homeless.- Chapter 7 Relationships: Constructing the Other, Constructing the Self.- Chapter 8 Conclusion: The Symbolic Economy of Youth Homelessness and the Purpose of Homelessness Research.- Chapter 9 Afterword: The Practice of Ethical Research Interviews with Homeless Youth.

  • Reconstitution Of Social Work: Towards A Moral

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Reconstitution Of Social Work: Towards A Moral

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is the first book-length explication of hermeneutics in social work. It attempts to clarify and reconstruct the moral basis of social work. Against the mainstream current of doing social work with the technical-rational outlook, this book argues that value constitutes the very core of social work. It is with this solid foundation of moral concepts that social work techniques are reconstituted. This volume seamlessly combines theoretical discussions with empirical studies. It starts with a theoretical inquiry that combines hermeneutics and critical theory and examines the moral nature of social work. It then extends the theoretical analysis to empirical research on mental illness, cancer, community development and social work management. Redefining the relationship between theory and practice, the discussion on first-person value involvement and dialogical mode of understanding will inspire social workers to develop their professional practice in a new light. This volume will capture the attention of both social work scholars and frontline social work practitioners. The hermeneutic point of view will also be of interest to readers/students of social theory and social research.Table of ContentsTowards a Hermeneutic Conception of Social Work Practice: The Myths of Positivism and the Strong Thesis of Value Involvement; Towards a Hermeneutic Conception of Social Work Practice: Social Work Skills and Moral Practice; A Study from the Hermeneutic Perspective of the Constitution of the Mentally Ill SelfA"; The Meaning of Cancer from a Hermeneutic Perspective; Critical Theory and Community Development; The Moral Basis of Social Work Management.

  • A Tiger Remembers: The Way We Were in Singapore

NUS Press A Tiger Remembers: The Way We Were in Singapore

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBorn in the Year of the Fire Tiger, Ann Wee moved to Singapore in 1950 to marry into a Singaporean Chinese family, entering into a new world of cultural expectations and domestic rituals. She went on to become a pioneer in Singapore’s fledging social welfare department and is often described as the founding mother of social work in Singapore. In A Tiger Remembers, she draws on her decades of experience getting to know the many shapes and forms of the Singapore family and witnessing how they transformed since the ’50s. Wee’s talent is for remembering and paying homage to the things history books often deem insignificant—things that can contain some of the most illuminating details about the day to day inner workings of families from many backgrounds, such as terms of endearment; the emotional nuance in social relations; questions of hygiene; the stories of convicts; tales of ghost wives and changeling babies; anecdotes from rural clan settlements and migrant dormitories; and the migration of families from squatter settlements into public housing. Affectionately observed and wittily narrated, with a deep appreciation of how far Singapore has come, this book brings to life generations of social change through a focus on the institution of the family.Trade Review“In narrating the stories of people and places Wee encountered in her years of cross-cultural learning in Singapore and Malaya (now Malaysia), she unfolds untold stories of our past. They will be new to many young Singaporeans today. I am certain this memoir will stimulate important conversations about our past heritage and culture.”
