Book SynopsisThe discussion on globalisation has largely neglected the question of welfare/social issues. Of course, this is not astonishing -- the discussion on these issues had been fairly neglected even before questions of globalisation arrived on the agenda. And of course, these questions (social/welfare) had not been totally neglected. Instead, they have been tackled in a very limited way, just taking the national boundaries (or local, regional, and as well European or whatever) as granted. The consequences for others have been disregarded. But even taking notice of ''welfare'' in connection with globalisation is in a way restricted. What really matters is the ''mode of socialisation'' changes, the way of living together. Instead of looking at single issues like economic changes, ways of political negotiation etc., and the limitation on an institutional point of view the book reviews changes in soci(et)al realms in more holistic terms. The book does not aim at a definition and conceptualism of a global welfare state. However, some important restrictions of the mainstream discussion of globalisation are pointed out. Furthermore a perspective is debated which draws attention to the dangers of new lines of exclusion as well as on opportunities for social integration beyond natural borders. The various issues are tackled from a wide range of sociological and social-policy approaches.

Book SynopsisFlorence Hope Luscomb's life spanned nearly all of the twentieth century. Born into a remarkable family of abolitionists and progressive thinkers, the young Florence accompanied her feminist mother to lectures and political rallies, soon choosing a course of political engagement and social activism from which she never retreated. Politcal Women counters the traditional narratives that place men at the center of political thinking and history. Showing how three generations of Luscomb's family had set the stage for her activism, this biography presents her story against the backdrop of Boston's politics and larger struggles for social justice. Luscomb participated in every significant social reform movement of her time -- from securing women's right to vote and supporting trade unionism to advocating an end to the war in Vietnam. Luscomb also ran for public office; she was narrowly defeated when she ran for Boston's city council in 1922. Although unsuccessful as a third-party candidate for Congress (in 1936 and 1950) and for Governor of Massachusetts (in 1952), she was one of the few women of her time to seek office. Independent, athletic, and spirited, she apparently never thought that traditional gender prescriptions applied to her. A practicing architect before the First World War, an exuberant hiker all her life, and a member in collective-living arrangements, Luscomb enjoyed a life of rich experiences and sustaining relationships. The magnitude of the financial challenge facing Social Security is also discussed and why acting sooner and spreading the burden of reform across more generations is fairer to future generations. Additionally, the possible role that progressive reductions in scheduled benefits would play in Social Security reform is explored. While there is considerable disagreement about the precise nature and timing of the reforms that will ultimately make Social Security solvent, there is broad agreement that progressive benefit adjustments will be a key component of those reforms.
