Book SynopsisHow do human societies provide for the wellbeing of their members? How far can we organize the ways in which we care for and about each other? And who should take responsibility for providing the support we need? These are some of the fundamental questions addressed by social policy today. In this introduction, Hartley Dean explains the extraordinary scope and importance of social policy. He explores its foundations and contemporary significance; the principal issues it addresses and their diverse economic, political and sociological dimensions, and concludes by looking anew at fundamental challenges facing social policy in a dramatically changing world. Introducing social policy as a broadly conceived study of human wellbeing, this revised and extensively updated third edition examines ways in which governments and peoples throughout the world attend to, promote, neglect or even undermine the things that make life worth living. These include essential services like healthcare and education; the means of livelihood – jobs and money – and sometimes intangible things such as physical and emotional security. Trying to understand these elements, which together constitute human wellbeing, is the stuff of social policy.Trade Review‘Hartley Dean’s passion for social policy shines through this work like a bright light. However, this shift was not always accompanied by liberation from restrictive practices. In 2014 a UK Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of ‘deprivation of liberty’ resulted in large numbers of older and disabled people in care homes, supported living and family homes being re-categorized as ‘detained’. Placing this ruling in its social, historical and global context, this book presents a socio-legal analysis of social care detention in the post-carceral era. • The Class Struggle and Welfare

Monthly Review Press,U.S. The Class Struggle and Welfare

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA fresh look on the welfare system?with a view beyond the stateWith The Class Struggle and Welfare, David Matthews argues that we must understand the welfare state as a dialectical phenomenon?a product of class struggle. Confronting the hypocritical rhetoric of politicians who castigate welfare beneficiaries as lazy and ?workshy,? Matthews points to clear evidence that the welfare state is essential to the prosperity and health of capitalist economies. At the same time, in the Marxist tradition, Matthews moves well beyond an analysis of welfare as simply an instrument wielded by capitalism for its benefit, arguing that proof of the class struggle scars the surface of every welfare system. With chapters focusing on welfare issues, including social security, health, disability, housing, and education, Matthews examines historical and current developments in Britain as a basis for a wider understanding of the relationship between capitalism and welfare. The Class Struggle and Welfare shows that as welfare states grew exponentially throughout the advanced capitalist world over the course of a century, the intents, purposes and perceptions of the institution of welfare underwent a dialectical transformation. On the one hand, the services offered served to bolster capitalism. On the other hand, welfare systems in and of themselves were born of class struggle. In turn, even as current welfare systems reflect the values and the needs of the capitalist arena, the influence and imprint of the working class is plain to see. The Class Struggle and Welfare ultimately looks to the future, arguing that the working class must consider an alternative type of welfare system?one which looks beyond the state and truly reflects the values of equality, solidarity, and community.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis authoritative guide to the law of continuing healthcare provides clarity on a contentious issue for those in long-term care: which adults are eligible for full NHS funding, as opposed to self-funded social care.Written by seasoned legal expert Michael Mandelstam, it provides practitioners with clear information on both the letter and spirit of the law, written in an accessible style suitable for a wide range of health and social care practitioners. The book gives all the need-to-knows in a handy A-Z format for quick reference, including key legal rules, guidance and case law.It contains also an extended analysis, with detailed evidence, of NHS continuing healthcare over the last 30 years up to the present. This is critical in order to understand why the rules are so complex, confusing and sometimes disregarded, and why decisions can seem counter-intuitive, unfair and difficult to challenge. The book is essential reading to assist the making of decisions that are fair, lawful and transparent.Trade ReviewThis book provides a fantastic overview of NHS continuing healthcare and is written to give people the information they need. It is incredibly helpful for people who want to learn more about CHC and equip themselves for the often laborious process of applying for it. -- Alzheimer’s SocietyThis excellent book should be essential reading for the Secretary of State for Health and all health service managers and social workers involved in CHC decision making. It is my hope this book will put the woeful application of CHC decision-making back under the spotlight and into the national conversation. -- Simon Bull C.Q.S.W., Assistant Borough Solicitor, Bracknell CouncilTable of ContentsPreface1.Introduction2.Basic rules and common pitfalls 3.Background, explanation and evidence of a dysfunctional system4.Chapter 4: A-Z ListAdaptations, see Home adaptationsAccommodation and NHS continuing healthcareAdvocacy and NHS continuing healthcareAids to daily living, see EquipmentAltered states of consciousness, see Decision Support ToolAppropriate clinician (end of life)AssessmentBreathing, see Decision Support ToolCare Act 2014CarersCase managementChallenging behaviourChallenging decisionsCharging for services, see Means-testingChecklistChildrenClinical commissioning groupsCognition, see Decision Support ToolCommunication, see Decision Support ToolCompetence, see: Expertise of assessors and knowledge of the patientCommissioning support unitsComplexityConsentConsultation in decision-makingContinence, see Decision Support ToolContinuity of careCoordinatorCooperationCost-effectivenessCoughlan caseDecision-making processDecision support tool (DST)Delay Deprivation of libertyDiagnosisDirect paymentsDiscriminationDispute resolution between NHS and social servicesDisputes between person and the NHSDomains of need, see Decision support toolDouble scoringDowry payments, see Legacy paymentsDrug therapies and medication, see Decision Support ToolEducation, health and care plansEligibility End of life, see Fast track PathwayEquipmentEvidence of need Expertise of assessors, and knowledge of the patientFamily involvement, see: Person and family involvementFast track pathway tool (end of life)Final decisions about CHC eligibility, see Clinical commissioning groupsFinancial gatekeeping, see Final decision-making; ResourcesFunded nursing careGap between health and social care Gatekeeping, see Financial gatekeepingGrogan caseGuidanceHealth care needsHealth Service OmbudsmanHealth services generallyHome adaptationsHospicesHospital dischargeIncidental or ancillary or of a nature beyond social servicesIndependent review panelsIndicative casesInformal carers, see CarersInput (of care)IntensityInterim provision of care during assessment and decisionJoint fundingJoint workingJudicial reviewLearning disabilityLegal frameworkLegal cases, see Indicative casesLegal remedies, see Disputes between person and the NHSLocal authorities, see Social ServicesLocal Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSCO) Means-testingMeeting needMental capacityMental health aftercareMental Health Act 1983, see Mental health aftercareMobility, see Decision Support ToolMulti-disciplinary teamNational Framework on NHS Continuing HealthcareNational Health Service Act 2006NatureNHS-employed staffNHS EnglandNorthern IrelandNurse assessorsNutrition, see Decision Support ToolPanelsPaying privately, see Private carePeople's own homesPerson and family involvementPersonal health budgetsPersonal injury compensationPredictable unpredictabilityPointon casePrimary decision makerPrimary health needPrivate top-up careProcess, see Decision makingProfessional judgementProhibitions Psychological and emotional needs, see Decision support toolPublic Service Ombudsman for WalesQuality of care, see NatureQuantity of care, see Incidental or AncillaryReferral for NHS continuing healthcareRegistered nursingRehabilitation and recoveryReimbursementRemedies, see DisputesResourcesRespite careResponsible commissioner, see Clinical commissioning groupsReview of decision about CHC see DisputesReviewing care packageSafeguardingScotlandScreening, see ChecklistSection 117, Mental Health Act, see Mental health after careSettingSkin, see Decision Support ToolSocial careSocial services Specialist staffTimescales, see DelayTopping up, see Private top-up careTrainingTransitionUnpredictabilityWalesWell managed needsWithdrawal of care

Over 45 years of experience distilled into one manual for success.Trade ReviewFrom the inaugural, undergraduate assignment submission, through to the final edit of the most experienced social work practitioner's thesis, there is little in social work that is not highly influenced by the work of Neil Thompson - and this book confirms why. Through chapters that insightfully articulate the attitudes and values that underpin our profession, being prepared and making a difference, to everyday challenges such as working in partnership with others and on into the nuance of professional practice via managing conflict and handling criticism, the essence of good social work practice is beautifully illustrated in this book. Written with authority, confidence and providing vital helpful extras such as 'key points', 'reflective moments' and 'value exercises' to further expand our learning, this book is a gift back to the profession and should be cherished. -- Rob Mitchell, Principal Social Worker at Bradford Council and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Lancaster UniversityThompson so effortlessly summarises something that I have been trying to instil in the Social Work profession over the last 30 years ... How do you keep going when the pressure just keeps rising? In this no-nonsense handbook, Neil Thompson and John McGowan distil years of social work expertise into key strategies to overcome the challenges that come with the profession. Each chapter is full of clear, practical advice on staying resilient in the face of tough situations, whether they're political, social, or economic. Handy frameworks and expert advice will strengthen your practice and give you a solid structure to build on, helping you fulfil your potential as a social worker and provide better support for your clients. Social work is tough, but with the guidance and support in this book you can learn to tackle the challenges and thrive as a force for change.Trade ReviewA powerfully frank look at challenges in social work; this book inspires social workers to collectively work at rebuilding a culture of respect for the profession notwithstanding neoliberalism and transactional managerialism. -- Professor Kate van Heugten, University of Canterbury, New ZealandHopeful, realistic and systemic. This wonderfully accessible book invites the social work profession at both micro and macro levels to reflect on what is needed for us to continue doing the work we love, for those we serve. -- Nadia, Fran and Eugene, The Social Matters podcastI believe I speak for many social workers when I say that this book is hugely welcome and very relatable. Social work is a career like no other, highly rewarding but extremely tasking, emotionally draining, and complex. There is an automatic response to gravitate towards survival as opposed to thriving mode. I particularly loved the use of the words "Scratch" and "Beyond" to give great insights on how to survive and thrive in social work. This book provides robust enlightenment on managing stress in social work and is a must read for all social work practitioners, managers, and leaders. -- Vivian Okeze – Tirado – England Social Worker of the Year & Social Justice Advocate Gold winner 2021.

Book SynopsisThis excellent, informative and well presented, a book provides the reader with fourteen edited chapters covering an area of policy and practice that is quite specific but will inform anyone interested in the development of a service user participation ethos in adult social care. It is a book that is relevant to managers and practitioners, both as students and qualified professionals, as well as academics. Care management is now well established in the everyday practice of predominantly statutory organisations. This book revisits the principles of this method of assessing and planning the care needs of adult service users, and introduces Person Centred Planning (PCP) as a suitable method for ensuring that much of the empowerment rhetoric care management is actually realised.'- British Journal of Social Work'Part of the attraction of this book is its strong practice component. This is applicable to the different professionals working with people with learning disabilities, in whatever their service configuration. For students, the book will also provide a good introduction to the impact of person centred planning and its connections to a long history of similar initiatives.'- Journal of Interprofessional Care'This book is a stimulating and challenging read of those working in service development generally, as well as learning disability services. There is a potential broad care management readership that might also find this relevant and interesting.'- Journal of Interprofessional Care'This is an important book. It brings together chapters by many of the foremost researchers and practitioners in person centred planning. The book contains many ideas for taking the PCP process to a higher level of sophistication to really underpin the future development of appropriate and effective services.' - Community Living'This book will help social workers to reconnect with the core values of their profession and to challenge institutionalised policies and practices. It has proven to be a valuable teaching resource and whilst its focus is on people with learning disabilities, the principles of PCP that it raises are relevant to any service user group and social work arena. Highly recommended.'- Professional Social Work'There are many important issues facing the care management system today in the light of person-centred planning and approaches, and you would be hard-pressed to find a better collection of insightful and radical thinkers in this area than those featured here. It asks hard questions, and challenges the professional to adopt more inclusive and accessible work practices. Wherever you work in the field of learning difficulties you should read this book carefully and aim to put "person-centeredness" at the core of your practice.'- Community Care'You would be hard-pressed to find a better collection of insightful and radical thinkers in the area of care management. Wherever you work in the field of learning difficulties you should read this book carefully and seek to put "person centredness" at the core of your practice. The challenge for professionals, is making it a reality for individuals.'- Community CareThis timely book provides a reflective analysis of person centred planning for people with learning disabilities, complementing policy initiatives that focus on individualised planning and service user involvement. Drawing on practical experience and research findings, the contributors explore policy and practice issues, including:* advocacy and empowerment* risk management and adult protection* inter-agency and inter-professional working* ethnicity and culture* de-institutionalisation.Vivid case studies illustrate best practice in person centred planning, and the authors offer a rich variety of ideas for increasing the participation, self-esteem and quality of life of people with learning disabilities. This practical and accessible text is an invaluable guide for policy makers, carers and social work managers, academics and students.Trade ReviewI liked the use of case studies by many of the authors. The other thing I liked about this book were the descriptive examples of techniques used in PCP. As a former case manager of people with intellectual disabilities who worked through the introduction of PCP with clients in Victoria, I found myself getting ideas on how I could have implemented or planned better as I read through the book. I believe this is a good practical book for practictioners working with people with intellectual disabilities, as well as for carers and significant others of people with intellectual disabilities. -- Australian Social WorkTable of Contents1. But what happens when these soldiers come back home, having lost their friends and killed their enemies, having seen and done things that have no place in civilian life? In Aftershock, Matthew Green tells the story of our veterans' journey from the frontline of combat to the reality of return. Through wide-ranging interviews with former combatants -- including a Royal Marine sniper and a former operator in the SAS - as well as serving personnel and their families, physicians, therapists, and psychiatrists, Aftershock looks beyond the headline-grabbing statistics and the labels of post-traumatic stress disorder to get to the heart of today's post-conflict experience. Green asks what lessons have been learned from past wars, and explores the range of help currently available, from traditional talking cures to cutting-edge scientific therapies. As today's battle-scarred troops begin to lay their weapons down, Aftershock is a hard-hitting account of the hidden cost of conflict. And its message is one that has profound implications, not just for the military, but for anyone with an interest in how we experience trauma and survive.Trade ReviewGreen has documented the hidden cost of modern war in a way no other author has ever even attempted. Intelligent, sensitive, courageous and tenacious, he has spent two years listening to the harrowing stories of former soldiers struggling to cope with PTSD - and hearing how the military and medical establishment have, for the most part, failed them. The MoD should hang their heads in shame if this book does not become required reading at every staff college. Aftershock hasn't come a moment too soon -- James Fergusson, author * A Million Bullets *Compelling, humbling and hugely inspiring accounts from the real heroes of our era. We have a duty to understand what these men have given on our behalf -- Bear GryllsIntelligently written and agreeably unsensational... One of the many strengths of this nuanced book is the sympathy and compassion [Green] brings to the experiences of soldiers... [A] revealing and thought-provoking study -- Trevor Royle * Sunday Herald *Unsentimental but horribly affecting... mixing journalistic rigour with historical investigation [and written] in prose thrilling enough for a bestselling novel -- Alexander Larman * Observer *Compelling and instructive... [This is] a work of integrity and substance, and as so much of it touches on interdepartmental matters it ought to be read by every minister -- Allan Mallinson * Spectator *An urgent manifesto... [Green's] book sharply exposes the faults in the current system... The stories Green has collected are so powerful because they are some of the only means we have of measuring the true scale of PTSD in Britain -- Joe Shute * Daily Telegraph *A thoughtful, unsensational account of a significant problem -- Max Hastings * Sunday Times *This is a most compelling book which tells the story of those who have suffered so much in the conduct of operation to protect our security. Mental health pressures need to move centre stage in our priorities - now! -- Sir Richard Dannatt, former General Chief of StaffGreen tells the uncomfortable story of our veterans' journey from the frontline of combat to the reality of return brilliantly via first-person accounts and interviews with former combatants and their families, military experts, physicians and psychologists * Bookseller *If we expect our lives and freedoms to be protected we have a duty to those who do this. As a society, as people, surely we must take responsibility for the bodies, minds, and indeed souls of those who fight for us? Aftershock makes this point again and again, powerfully and compellingly -- Justine Hardy, trauma therapist, author * The Wonder House *A thought-provoking enquiry into PTSD. It contains important insights into a problem that is rarely covered in any but the most superficial way. I highly recommend it -- Adrian Weale * Literary Review *I've never come across something that really tells the truth about war in this way... an amazing book -- Sharmaine Lovegrove * Monocle Radio *[An] outstanding study of the psychological wounds affecting British military personnel adapting to life at home after serving in the country's most recent wars * New Statesman *A moving and illuminating book [that] reports on the lives, struggles and triumphs of returned combat veterans and their families -- Bryan Doerries, author * The Theatre of War *A sometimes harrowing but ultimate hopeful book about PTSD and its effect on the lives of soldiers and medical staff on their return from war zones. Some of the stories in the book stayed with me long after I had finished reading -- Bob McDevitt, Best Books of 2016 * Herald *

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere was once a time when having adequate technical skills and competencies, and the appropriate clinical management plan, was sufficient to be considered an effective member of the healthcare team. Today, effective communication is regarded as an essential skill for any healthcare or social care professional. The various healthcare professionals' codes of practice all demand good communication as a basic requirement, and yet despite more than three decades' mainstream acceptance of the positive impact of good communication, and widespread understanding of the consequences of poor communication, first-class communication is not always evident on hospital wards, in doctors' and dentists' surgeries, in ambulances and at clinics. This practical handbook aims to address this problem for anyone working in health and social care, from students undergoing professional education or on practice placements to recently qualified doctors, nurses, midwives and paramedics.Senior members of healthcare teams whose formal training may not have covered communications will find it helpful, as will many other staff, including non-regulated health and social care workers such as healthcare assistants, who have received limited formal training in communications.Trade ReviewAt The Patients Association, via our national helpline, we hear every day from patients who tell us of both good and bad experiences they have had interacting with health care practitioners. I would always strongly recommend that any health and social care practitioner take time out of their busy schedule to pause and appraise their own work in order to grow and develop. What this book offers is the mirror to reflect, and the tools to guide this process in an easy and to-the-point manner.' (Katherine Murphy, CEO, The Patients Association): 'This book provides an essential, necessary and timely addition to the literature on communication for all healthcare professionals. Not only is it grounded in evidence, it has a unique balance of practical advice and skills that are an essential component of all those engaged in the delivery of health and social care. In my view this book will provide something for both undergraduate healthcare students and qualified practitioners alike - an essential read.' (Professor Brian J. Webster Henderson, Professor of Nursing/University Dean of Learning & Teaching, Vice Chair Council of Deans of Health UK, Convenor Council of Deans of Health Scotland): 'Having worked in dental clinical academia and provided oral healthcare services over many years, I would recommend this very useful handbook to dental clinicians, dentists and dental care professionals, and to their support staff - and to anyone working in other branches of healthcare and even social care. I would also highly recommend it for use across the breadth of undergraduate and postgraduate education and training.' Book SynopsisAs people who have a learning disability grow older, we need to ensure that support and services are geared towards meeting changing physical and mental health needs. The main objective of the guide is to promote holistic support that will maintain the abilities of the person with a learning disability and dementia and provide services that meet their individual needs. It is important that people with a learning disability and dementia: * have choice and control over the support and services they receive, now and in the future * maintain meaningful and supportive relationships with family, friends and the wider community * remain in their own accommodation, if appropriate and desired. Each section in this self-study guide is structured around one of ten topic areas, ranging from background information about learning disability and dementia to end-of-life planning. Each topic area will prompt thinking about practice and development of skills, promoting changes to support which are focused around each individual, rather than expecting the person to fit the service. Tools are included as part of each topic. They may be copied as handouts, or used as part of staff discussions. Some can also be displayed or available in a designated staff area for staff to read. A link is provided to Supporting Derek: a short two-part film featuring actors with a learning disability. This will provide practical examples of some of the issues discussed in this guide and is an essential resource when completing some of the activities. This guide can be used for your continuing professional development. If you are a manager, you might like to ask your staff members or students to work through it section-by-section, completing the activities each contains. Their responses can be discussed as part of on-going reflection and supervision or discussed at a staff handover meeting. The guide can help staff to prepare for quality checks and inspections and can contribute towards meeting national care standards. There is also a copy of this guide included in the Supporting People with Learning Disabilities and Dementia training pack as background for those facilitating training programmes.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Understanding learning disability and dementia Chapter 2: Understanding behaviour Chapter 3: Environment Chapter 4: Responding to pain Chapter 5: Effective communication Chapter 6: Meaningful activities Chapter 7: When a friend has dementia Chapter 8: Eating and drinking Chapter 9: Night-time care Chapter 10: Advanced dementia

Book SynopsisThe book aims to explain the emergence of the Norwegian—and to some extent, the Scandinavian—welfare state in historical and anthropological terms. Halvard Vike argues that particular forms of political grassroots mobilization contributed heavily to what he calls “a low level of gravity state”—a political order in which decentralized institutions make it possible to curtail centralizing forces. While there is a large international literature on the Nordic welfare states, there is limited knowledge about how these states are embedded in local contexts. Vike's approach is based on an ethnographic practice which may be labeled “in and out of institutions.” It is based on ethnographic work in municipal assemblies, local bureaucracies, political parties, voluntary organizations, and various informal contexts.Table of Contents1. Local Politics in the Welfare State: Patterns of Conflict and Political Practice2. Cross Cutting Cleavages, the Politics of Resistance – and Social Control3. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe focus of this book is centered on the participation of children in countries of the South. In this sense, it will review the possibilities of children's participation, as well as their forms of participation in different contexts of daily life. There has been a tendency to underestimate children’s role as active constructors of their surrounding social space, as well as of the internalized interpretations of the way social life operates. Today it is necessary to recognize that children are agents actively involved in the construction of their own lives and the life of the societies they live in; and in this sense, it is important to consider and re-signify the participation of boys and girls as a fundamental pillar in the process of building societies in the 21st century. The book contains chapters that re-significate children’s participation in different countries from South America and South Africa, in relation with different topics: well-being, methods, citizenship, poverty, education, rurality, ethics and human rights.Trade Review“This publication is well placed to assist researchers and policy makers in understanding the complex, diverse, and contextual nature of children’s participation in and as it affects their lives. The knowledge disseminated in the various chapters, if cognisance is taken of the contributions, will allow children, through active participation, to become an integral part of political and social reform in dealing with challenges and future planning.” (Phadiel Hoosen, Applied Research in Quality of Life, Vol. 18 (1), 2023)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Acknowledgments.- Contributors.- 1.
