Little, Brown & Company White American Youth
Book SynopsisA stunning look inside the world of violent hate groups by a onetime white supremacist leader who, shaken by a personal tragedy, realized the error of his ways and abandoned his destructive life to become an anti-hate activist. As he stumbled through high school, struggling to find a community among other fans of punk rock music, Christian Picciolini was recruited by a now notorious white power skinhead leader and encouraged to fight with the movement to protect the white race from extinction. Soon, he had become an expert in racist philosophies, a terror who roamed the neighborhood, quick to throw fists. When his mentor was arrested and sentenced to eleven years in prison, sixteen-year-old Picciolini took over the man''s role as the leader of an infamous neo-Nazi skinhead group. Seduced by the power he accrued through intimidation, and swept up in the rhetoric he had adopted, Picciolini worked to grow an army of extremists. He used music as a recruitment tool

Little, Brown Book Group Behind Closed Doors SHORTLISTED FOR THE ORWELL
Book Synopsis''BRILLIANT . . . I LOVE THIS BOOK'' LEMN SISSAY''A MUST-READ BOOK'' JACQUELINE WILSON''EXTRAORDINARY'' OLIVER BULLOUGH''EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK'' HILARY COTTAMMeet the mother whose children were taken away, and the father who fought for his son. Listen to the radical social worker, the judge, the lawyer. See inside the homes of foster carers, adoptive parents and children in care. Because behind closed doors, a scandal is ongoing. We now remove more children from their parents than ever before, more than any other western country. Not because of a rise in physical or sexual abuse, but because of complex factors that are overlooked and misunderstood.Children''s Care is a system where fathers are ignored, and mothers are punished for experiencing abuse. Rife with prejudices about race, ableism and class, determined by a postcode lottery. Blind to poverty and its effects on family life. And, at itTrade ReviewA riveting investigation into how society looks after its greatest and most valuable vulnerable asset: the child. Behind Closed Doors is a page-turner on one hand and a thoughtful meditation on the other: dispassionate, balanced and brave. Curtis goes where most do not and draws surprisingly frank testimony from judges, social workers, parents and children. Every parent, every politician, every social worker should read this brilliant book on our present state. * Lemn Sissay, author of My Name is Why *A must-read book. It's a brilliant examination of the Care system, with thoughtful suggestions of how it can be improved. Polly Curtis is refreshingly honest, sensitive and never shrill. * Jacqueline Wilson, author of The Story of Tracy Beaker *This extraordinary book reveals a hidden side of Britain we should all know about. It's sympathetic, and passionate, and an absolute must-read. * Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland *We have invisibly re-written the rules of family life creating one of the biggest child removal systems in the world. In this balanced, forensic and compelling book Polly Curtis shows what is happening to the most vulnerable families in Britain, how we are all complicit and what we could do about it. Everyone should read this book. * Hilary Cottam, author of Radical Help *Gandhi claimed that 'The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members'. This book, by one of Britain's best journalists writing about social justice, provides a damning indictment of just that: a dysfunctional society that is punishing victims instead of investing in the roots of the problem. Anyone interested in the social and economic solutions to the system that is failing children and their families must read this book. * Mariana Mazzucato, UCL Professor, author of Mission Economy *One of the most important books on British society for many years. It is rigorous, evidence-led and clear-eyed. But it is also immensely readable, thanks to her ability to weave humanity and public policy into a fine narrative. Curtis's book is much more than a study of children, families and social services: it is an MRI scan of society as a whole and its interconnected dysfunctions. In its scope, originality and potential impact, I can only compare it to Richard Hoggart's The Uses of Literacy (1957): it deserves the widest possible readership. * Matt d'Ancona, Tortoise *An important book that poses profound questions for our society * Ian Birrell, winner of the 2020 Orwell Prize for Investigating Social Evils *A fascinating and much-needed study into the UK's opaque and Kafkaesque child protection system. Curtis explores the stories beyond sensationalist headlines and gives voice to the children and parents so often reduced to statistics. Whether it is shadowing a judge, explaining the difference between public and private family proceedings, or interviewing politicians, Curtis walks us through every aspect of the care apparatus. Behind Closed Doors is equal parts characterful, narrative drive and impeccably researched guide. Much in this book is shocking and surprising, some is motivating and inspiring: all of it is vital. A book which should be read by anybody who has ever been a child. * Hannah Jane Parkinson *Unflinching yet compassionate reflection of the UK's care system . . . Essential reading on possibly the most important and overlooked responsibility of the state. -- Eve White * Reaction, 2022 *Meticulous . . . Curtis excavates the truth -- Yvonne Roberts * Observer *An impressive balance between empathy and investigation... Curtis doesn't only highlight the problem - of thousands of families being broken up due to institutional fears and failings - but also proposes solutions that are persuasive and practicable -- Books of the Year * Prospect *

Taylor & Francis Ltd Housing Policy in Latin American Cities
Book SynopsisAfter the 1960s, rapid urbanization in developing regions in Latin America, Africa, and Asia was marked by the expansion of low-income irregular settlements that developed informally and which, by the 2000s, often constituted between 20-60 percent of the built-up area of metropolitan areas and other large cities. There has been a variety of research directed at the housing policies involved with these informal settlements, yet apart from the activities of Latin American Housing Network (LAHN), there has been minimal attention directed at the earliest portion of settlements that formed some 25-40 years ago that now form a large part of the intermediate ring of the cities. This volume breaks new ground by opening up a new generation of housing policy in Latin America cities with broader application for other developing countries. Its editors bring unique perspectives: Peter Ward coordinates the LAHN, and Edith Jiménez and María Di Virgilio are founding members of the netwTrade Review"The original research in this volume provides a landmark for anyone concerned with improving the lives of urban residents. Ward and his colleagues uniquely demonstrate the significant challenges facing cities while providing concrete solutions to meet the future needs of consolidated settlements."— Maureen Donaghy, Rutgers University"Since the 1960s and 1970s urban areas throughout Latin America have been shaped by informal settlements. Now fully serviced and consolidated, these apparently ordered low-income settlements have been largely off the radar of city and housing planners. In this path-breaking comparative study of ten cities, Ward, Jiménez, and de Virgilio and their colleagues of the LAHN make a highly significant contribution to reshaping housing policy in the region, and to ensuring that some 50% of the inhabitants of our large urban areas are now firmly back on the policy map."— Peter Spink, Centro de Administração Pública e Governo - Fundação Getulio Vargas - São Paulo"the book does a wonderful job in demonstrating the need for more innovative housing policies that take full advantage of Latin American cities’ hidden assets in order to tackle the persisting problems of lack of adequate housing for lower-income groups and dysfunctional, costly suburban growth. Hopefully, some of these ideas will find their place in the discussions that will take place in the upcoming 2016 UN-HABITAT III." — Daniel de Mello Sanfelici, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), BrazilTable of Contents1. PublicAffairs,U.S. The Stolen Year: How COVID Changed Children's
Book SynopsisThe onset of COVID broke a 150-year social contract between America and its children. Tens of millions of students lost what little support they had from the government-not just school but food, heat, and physical and emotional safety. The cost was enormous. But this crisis began much earlier than 2020. In The Stolen Year, Anya Kamenetz exposes a long-running indifference to the plight of children and families in American life and calls for a reckoning. She follows families across the country as they live through the pandemic, facing loss and resilience: a boy with autism in San Francisco who gains a foster brother and a Hispanic family in Texas that loses a member to COVID, and finds solace when they need it most. Kamenetz also recounts the history that brought us to this point: how we thrust children and caregivers into poverty, how we over-police families of color, how we rely on mothers instead of infrastructure. And how our government, in failing to support our children through this tumultuous time, has stolen years of their lives.

Fernwood Publishing Co Ltd Ineligible: Single Mothers Under Welfare
Book SynopsisBetween 1995 and 2015, Ontario ushered in a new era of regulating the poor, whereby new welfare surveillance technology was mandated to disentitle recipients, reduce caseloads, and enforce workfare. A technologically infused welfare state automated eligibility and risk assessments to interact with welfare fraud hotlines, fraud enforcement officers, and other state surveillance practices. While the poor have always been monitored and surveilled by the state when seeking financial support, the methods, techniques, and capacity for surveillance within and across government jurisdictions has profoundly altered how recipients navigate social assistance. Welfare surveillance has exacerbated social inequality, especially among low income, Indigenous, and racialized single mothers. Krys Maki unpacks in-depth interviews with Ontario Works caseworkers, anti-poverty activists, and single mothers on assistance in Kingston, Peterborough, and Toronto, and employs intersectional feminist political economy and critical surveillance theory to contextualize the ways neoliberal welfare reforms have subjected low-income single mothers to intensive state surveillance. and centers their experiences to examine how their status as lone parents prompted fraud investigations, invasive questioning about their relationship status, and triggered investigations by other governing bodies such as child welfare agencies. This book also examines the moral and political implications of administering inadequate benefits alongside punitive surveillance measures. Despite significant restraints, anti-poverty activists, caseworkers, and recipients have discovered individual and collective ways to resist the neoliberal agenda.

This highly readable work presents in detail Kim's group training program for adoptive parents and carers that she has used for a number of years. Kim presents clearly the three modules (each involving six sessions) that make up the training and includes handouts and other materials that can be copied and utilized. She presents the key components of the group process itself as well as supportive research to demonstrate the effectiveness of the program.Kim's comprehensive and creative work will also be of great benefit to professionals in the development of their own knowledge of raising children and youth impacted by trauma and attachment problems. Professionals may also use these materials to guide their interventions with individual families. Finally, adoptive parents and carers may also find this work of help when facing the unique struggles they encounter in their efforts to provide good care to their vulnerable children. In short, I am certain that Kim's work will contribute greatly to our efforts both to understand the care that these children need as well as to guide their parents and carers in their efforts to provide such care. We will all experience much gratitude to Kim for Nurturing Attachments Training Resource in the years ahead. -- Daniel A. Hughes, Ph.D., President of the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Institute, Pennsylvania, USAFoster carers and adoptive parents can make bringing up children and young people with complex needs and helping them feel part of their new families appear effortless, but my experience of working with some of the best shows that it's far from easy. I welcome any resource that supports carers to do this well. This material, from an author with a great deal of knowledge about the tasks involved, and with its focus on what they can do and everyday strategies which will make a difference, is very welcome. -- Dr Andrea Warman, social care research, policy and development consultant, UKIn Nurturing Attachments Kim Golding explores parenting children who have attachment and trauma-related difficulties in a theoretically sound manner. Golding's work will be a valuable resource for anyone facilitating parent education/support groups. This programme will not only help its users develop a comprehensive understanding of the complexities that exist in the relationships they have with their children, but also show how they can use this understanding to transform these relationships. Golding has done a masterful job at integrating theory with a practicality that will enable parents to feel more effective in their parenting roles. -- Gregory C. Verso Books The Jail is Everywhere: Fighting the New
Book SynopsisNearly every county and major city in the United States has a jail, the short-term detention center controlled by local sheriffs that funnels people into prisons and long-term incarceration. Jails are now the fastest-growing sector of the US carceral state. As jails grow, they transform the region around them. Whole towns and small cities see health care provision and employment opportunities become subordinate to carceral concerns. If jails are everywhere, resistance is too. Campaigns against new or expanded jails have emerged in large and mid-sized cities and in dozens of small towns and rural counties across the US. While there is some coordination and communication between those involved in these struggles, they tend to be isolated from each other and from broader movements. The Jail Is Everywhere brings together an incredible range of knowledge and experience from jail fights across the country. It maps this new terrain, foregrounding the hard-forged analyses of anti-jail organizers themselves as they take us through campaigns that, while appearing local, are at the new center of the carceral state. With a foreword by Ruth Wilson Gilmore.Trade ReviewA collection of writing spotlighting the 'monster' that is the American prison system...Social justice activists and those with an interest in criminal justice issues will especially appreciate these well-researched, thoughtful essays that reveal just how much power government policies have given to the American carceral system. * Kirkus *[The Jail is Everywhere] paints a vivid picture of a grassroots, nationwide decarceral movement. Activists involved on the ground will find this valuable, while others will receive a substantial education in the politics and economics of incarceration. * Publishers Weekly *With its bevy of perspectives and individual case studies, The Jail Is Everywhere is a revealing overview of the growing problem of jail expansion in the US, with a survey of approaches to addressing it. * Foreword Reviews *The Jail Is Everywhere is a vibrant collection that equips the reader, and anyone interested in organizing against the many forms of carceral expansion, with a swathe of helpful strategies and tactics ... a crucial anthology, skillfully assembled. * Carceral Geography Working Group *A remarkably refreshing read, rooted in the messy but everyday realities of abolitionist organizing. The Jail Is Everywhere demonstrates that knowledge about the function of the carceral state and its multi-tentacled reach into U.S. politics, economy, and culture can only truly be unearthed through active struggle. -- Charlotte Rosen * Inquest *This is not only an important book for people who want to understand the operation of the current carceral state. It's a critical read for folks who might be fighting prison expansion or construction in their neighborhoods. -- Bill Littlefield * Arts Fuse *Table of ContentsForeword- Ruth Wilson GilmoreIntroduction: The Jail Is Everywhere- Jack Norton, Lydia Pelot-Hobbs, and Judah Schept1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Quality of Life and Disability: An Approach for
Book SynopsisA refreshing book that can hold the reader's interest throughout. Quality of Life and Disability should be a compulsory text for all students in the disability field and would make a useful one for experienced practitioners including social workers.'- Australian Social Work'Among the recent proliferation of books on quality of life, this is a standout! Not only is Quality of Life and Disability: An Approach for Community Practitioners placed squarely in the disability field, but it has an applied emphasis that is rare for a topic that so abounds in vague and often conflicting theories and terminologies. Rather than burdening the reader with the conceptual conundrums of a construct as ambitious as whole of life quality, Brown and Brown dive into the real life issues. This quality of life text will appeal to many practitioners in the disability field. A welcome addition to the bookshelves of many practitioners.'- Paul Bramston, University of Southern Queensland, Australia'Excellent guide demonstrating to practitioners, not only what they have to do to increase the quality of life of the people they look after, but also how they should start doing it.' - Wspolne Tematy'A remarkably rich mixture of experience, guidance and insight into the determination of people's quality of life, and into ways in which a wide variety of care staff, managers and policy-makers can understand and respond to disabled people's wants and needs.'- Care and Health magazine'One of the most refreshing approaches in the contemporary literature on quality of life and disability. The authors are to be congratulated for the very user friendly way the book has been designed.' - Trevor R. The authors of this practical book apply ideas about quality of life to the field of disability to assist front-line professionals, managers and policy-makers in effective service provision. They examine the historical context of the concept of quality of life and discuss the application of quality of life in the daily lives of people who have disabilities. Using recent studies to show how the development of quality of life approaches have led to changes in rehabilitation, and how an understanding of the issue can inform practice in assessment, intervention, management and policy, this is an indispensable book for all practitioners and managers working with people with disabilities.Trade Review'Excellent guide demonstrating to practitioners, not only what they have to do to increase the quality of life of the people they look after, but also how they should start doing it.' -wspolne tematy 'A remarkably rich mixture of experience, guidance and insight into the determination of people's quality of life, and into ways in which a wide variety of care staff, managers and policy-makers can understand and respond to disabled people's wants and needs.' - Care and Health magazine, Jan '04, Issue 52 'One of the most refreshing approaches in the contemporary literature on quality of life and disability... Jessica Kingsley Publishers Reconceptualising Work with 'Carers': New
Book SynopsisIn the wake of the profound changes in policy and practice around caring over the past ten years, this volume takes a fresh look at the social and legal status of carers. Demonstrating the scope and diversity of 'caring', the contributors highlight the positive aspects of caring and the interdependence of many caring relationships but also broach the sensitive and complex subject of `poor' care and the importance of identifying and meeting the needs of 'hidden carers'.Arguing that policy and practice must take account of both carers' and users' interests, the contributors re-evaluate the existing role of carers in developing new ideas in the planning and delivery of their services. Each of the book's chapters points to the future and looks at alternative and innovative ways forward in relation to thinking, policy and practice. This will make essential reading for social work and social science academics and students; professionals in the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors looking after the interests of carers; health and social care practitioners; nurses and care agency workers.Trade ReviewThis book provides a valuable and though-provoking assessment of the needs and role of the carer. It will be of great value to practitioners in the field who want to acquaint themselves with current research themes. -- British Journal of Social WorkThis is a welcome addition to the developing literature on informal family care. It is up to date on many of the main issues concerning carers, and it offers some new insights or ways of thinking about current debates and policy concerns. -- Community CareThis is a sound review of legislative developments, identifying a number of predictable points of conflict that result from the problems of defining a carer and the neglect of the care relationship... The book features two important developments in the strange history of 'the carer'. The first is the research-based policy debate that has continued to flourish in the UK during the 1990's, and second is the growing power of carers' organisations. It is good that research has moved on from the rather fruitless questions of who carers are and what they do, but both developments have combined to promote `the carer perspective', arguably at the expense of the care relationship and, more broadly, the resourcing and support of the care system. -- Social PolicyThe publication deals with many matters of interest and concern to social care staff who work with carers. The academic contributors, through nine chapters, explain and explore the changing policies and practices that have occurred over the last decade, and take a fresh look at the social and legal status of carers. Subjects covered include diversity among carers, assessment of carers' needs, support versus empowerment, carers' participation, employment, and getting to grips with poor care. -- Care and Health MagazineA timely reminder of the complexity and range of the challenges faced by policy makers, practitioners and carers. This is a readily accessible and essential read for practitioners and policy makers alike. In my current job role in performance and planning I was immediately drawn to those articles that explicitly addressed policy and good practice guides. However the case studies presented thought the book helped to widen my understanding of the complex contextual background in which policy is implemented. -- Elizabeth Elwick, Bournemouth Social ServicesTable of ContentsIntroduction, Kirsten Stalker, University of Stirling. 1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Safeguarding and Promoting the Well-being of
Book SynopsisImproving the well-being of children is more effective when social care professionals work with the children's parents, families and communities. This collection brings together innovative interventions designed to nurture children's health and welfare, and analyses which types of programmes are most effective and why.The contributors explore the impact of poverty on children's development and assess national initiatives set up to assess and reduce need. They present examples from the UK, US, Canada and Australia of specific interventions to counter or prevent difficulties in the domains of child development, parenting capacity and wider environmental factors. Many contributions demonstrate the importance of engaging with service users and helping communities to shape and direct their own programmes for change. The final section of the book presents useful approaches to assessing and evaluating services.Demonstrating the need for close inter-agency collaboration and `joined up' services, this book is essential reading for policy makers, managers and practitioners in child welfare agencies, and social work academics and students.Trade ReviewThis book shows where we have come from and how much further we need to travel on the road to a research-based, outcome-focused children's services system capable of additionally enhancing children's well-being, It deserves to be widely read by everyone involved in making children's services'. -- British Journal of Social WorkThe first three chapters provide excellent overviews and summaries of the evidence of need, the impact of poverty and social exclusion on children themselves, on families and communities and the range of policies and the impact of these on children's well-being in the UK and the US. Other chapters throughout the book provide accounts of particular initiatives being undertaken in the different countries. -- Cambridge University Press JournalThe book presents a (deservedly) mixed picture of the current developments in children's services in the UK. I would recommend it to those who need a general overview of recent developments in child well-being and children's services, including social work students, researchers and practitioners and managers in the field. -- Adoption and FosteringThis book successfully achieves its aim to exploring the current evidence of need, and the effectiveness of particular interventions to improve outcomes for children and families. I found it to be ambitious, timely and stimulating... There is something for everyone involved in family support. In children's services, where we need all the help we can get to understand one another's perspectives and practices, this book is very welcome… I will certainly be going back to this book again to follow up the research identified within it and I will be recommending it to colleagues. -- Children NowChapters on UK projects would prove of interest to managers and practitioners. The chapters on measuring outcomes and a description of government guidance were particularly helpful. -- Community CareTable of ContentsForeword, Maria Eagle MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families.
