Cambridge University Press Emile Durkheim Selected Writings
This 1972 book is a collection of Durkheim's writings drawing upon the whole body of his work. Dr Giddens takes his selections from a wide variety of sources and includes a number of items from untranslated writings in the Revue Philosophique, Annee Sociologique and from L'evolution pedagogue en France. Selections from previously translated writings have been checked against the originals and amended or re-translated where necessary. Dr Giddens arranges his selections thematically rather than chronologically. However, extracts from all phases of Durkheim's intellectual career are represented, giving the date of their first publication, which makes the evolution of his thought easily traceable. In his introduction Dr Giddens discusses phases in the interpretation of Durkheim's thought, as well as the main themes in his work, with an analysis of the effects of his thinking on modern sociology. The book is for students at any level taking courses in sociology, social anthropology and soci

Cambridge University Press Mundane Reason
Book SynopsisSociology and common sense both assume that there is an objective world that exists independently of the knower and that is accessible to competent perceivers. This assumption forms the basis of 'mundane reason'. As self-evident as this may appear, in this book the author shows that it is in fact historically emergent, culturally contingent and situationally constructed.Table of ContentsPreface; Acknowledgements; 1. The problem of mundaneity; 2. Mundane idealizations; 3. The self-preservation of mundane reason; 4. Mundane puzzles and the politics of experience; 5. Mundane autobiography; 6. Mundane reflection; 7. Cambridge University Press International Practices 119 Cambridge Studies in International Relations
Book SynopsisIt is in and through practices - deeds that embody shared intersubjective knowledge - that social life is organized, that subjectivities are constituted and that history unfolds. One can think of dozens of different practices (from balancing, to banking or networking) which constitute the social fabric of world politics. This book brings together leading scholars in fields from international law and humanitarianism to nuclear deterrence and the UN to provide effective new tools to understand a range of pressing issues of the era of globalization. As an entry point to the study of world politics, the concept of practice accommodates a variety of perspectives in a coherent yet flexible fashion and opens the door to much needed interdisciplinary research in international relations. International Practices crystallizes the authors' past research on international practices into a common effort to turn the study of practice into a novel research program in international relations.Trade Review'This conceptually innovative and empirically comprehensive collection focuses our attention on the 'practice' of international politics. This is an analytical category that promises both productive engagements across the various subfields of international relations theory, and new ways of thinking about empirical research. It should find a broad and receptive audience.' Peter J. Katzenstein, Walter S. Carpenter, Jr Professor of International Studies, Cornell UniversityTable of ContentsPart I.
